AOL failing to shut down without a forced quit?

Just downloaded AOL for Mac, works fine, but every time I try to close it down it fails to close, just gives me the spinning wheel sign & requires a forced quit, is this usual for other AOL users?
I have reported it to Apple after each occasion, how long before they get fed up & fix it!?!

Welcome To  Discussions DSL2!
No that is not normal.
I use AOL on all of my Macs, and do not have that problem.
I have not installed Leopard 10.5.x yet, but I have not read that your issue is common, with the that system.
"...I did not know that AOL were not supporting software for MAC..."
That is exactly accurate.
If you have a paid AOL account, you can still get help from AOL Support, no matter which version of AOL you have installed, but you probably don't need that.
And AOL is developing a new Mac version.
The 10.5.2 Combo Update, is what corrected some known issues with AOL & Leopard, but as per your specs, you have already installed that.
Did you run Repair Permissions after the update was intalled?
More info here Important Message for users who have installed Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard).
Repost, if you would like me to help you resolve the problem you are having with AOL.

Exactly what did you do to run Disk Utility and exactly what happened up to the freeze?
I called some place to ask for advice and they said it could be my logic board???
That's an easy answer to give but not necessarily the correct one.
If you have the system restore disc that came with your Mac, boot with that disc in the Mac while holding down the "D" key. That will invoke hardware diagnostics. Run those several times to investigate the possibility that your Mac has a hardware flaw.

  • Imac won't shut down - asked to force quit programs

    Hi Everyone,
I've had my iMac for about a year now. No issues until now. Recently when I try to shut down from the apple menu it doesn't do anything for a minute or so, then I get a pop up that asks to to quit a certain program or programs that are open. It asks me to force quit them. It seems to be anything I had open, like mail or safari. This never happened before. It would always just shut down. So, if I go back and quit all the open programs I think are open, then try to shut down, it still doesn't shut down. I then have to manually hold the power button to force it to shut down. When I quit all the programs, I don't get an task bar at the top to pick the apple icon to then shut down as well. Can anyone help with why this might be doing this recently and how to fix it? No new programs of any kind have been installed recently. I'm not real good at computers but I know something is not right with this now as it always would just shut down from the apple menu with no issues.
Thanks in advance for your help!

  • IMac Losing Bluetooth and then becomes slow, and fails to shut down without holding the button. Happens 3 times a day randomly.

    Hey guys,
Hope you are having a good day!
My IMac 3.1Ghz Intel Core I5, 16GB 1333MHz DDR3 memory running OSX 10.9.2 is having serious issues.
About 3 times per day sporadically it loses connectivity to the bluetooth keyboard and mouse, and is irrecoverable (I have tried everything, and it is not trying to connect to another device - e.g. IPAD).
When this happens, I am usually using an audio program (e.g. Logic Pro X, or Ableton Live), and when sound is playing, the event stops the sound altogether as well.
If I then hold the power button, the message asking if I want to shutdown or restart comes up, and the system appears responsive. However, there is no way for me to select anything because of the keyboard and mouse being down.
However, I jumped the gun and got a free IPAD app. that gives me limited control with a keyboard and mouse on there, enough that I am able to select to shut the computer down.
When this happens, the computer takes 5-10 minutes to force quit all active applications (e.g. logic pro, active audio interface program RME totalmix, etc.). When it finally, finally quits everything, and attempts to shutdown, it takes a very long time and gets stuck on a white screen. When it gets there the computer stops making noise altogether but has not properly shutdown yet, so it appears some sort of system failure is taking place.
It is really frustrating that this is happening, and I really hope my computer isn't broken. I would really appreciate any help or advice provided.
    Thanks so much!!!!!!!!!!

When you have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above. Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first. Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough. It is never necessary or helpful to post more than about 100 lines. "The more, the better" is not the rule here.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • IPhoto '09 won't shut down unless I force quit

I am trying to thin out my library and am manually copying them to an external drive. When I then move event to the trash and empty trash, iPhoto locks up and will not close. After I force quit, all the events are back in the library, but grayed out. Please HELP. What am I doing wrong, or is there a way to quickly back up the entire library to an external drive?

I followed your advice and dragged the library onto the back up drive, and it copied it all over, but is it just running it from that location now?
Nope. You need to choose it first. Now that the Library has been copied you need to tell iPhoto to look at it.
To tell iPhoto which library to read:
    _Quit iPhoto if its open
_Hold down option on the keyboard
_Keep holding option and launch iPhoto
_You will get a window that asks you to choose a library
_Go down the list of libraries and locate the one that is on the external drive (as you click on each library you will see it's location listed at the bottom of the window)
It didn't clear up any space, and when I opened iPhoto from the desktop to delete the events it seems to also delete from the backed up version.
Once you have followed the above steps to switch iPhoto to your library copy on the external drive you can then go to Home > Pictures > iPhoto Library and dump that Library in the trash.
_Launch iPhoto again to make sure you have your pictures. If you do, then you can empty your trash which will free up the disk space.
    <hr>
    Back to your backup question.
By moving your iPhoto Library to an external drive, and then deleting the Library from the computer, you now have your iPhoto Library in one and only one location, the external drive.
So what happens if that external drive crashes? poof all pictures gone.
To avoid that from happening you want to have a backup. What is a backup? A backup is a copy of your information. By having your information in two different locations, if one location stops working (failed drive, lightening, cats) you have a second location where the data is stored.
For VERY important information that you never want to lose, you should consider having even more backups like on DVD or even another hard drive that you disconnect from the computer and store somewhere safe (like inside a fire-proof safe). You would update that additional backup every now and then.
Here is how I have my computer setup.
_Macintosh HD -- This is my computer. It has all my files minus iTunes, iPhoto, and Movies.
_Media Drive -- This is my 1st external hard drive. It contains all my iTunes, iPhoto, and Movies. (I did this because my Macintosh HD was getting so full because of all the iTunes, iPhoto, and Movies content.)
_Time Machine Backup Drive -- This is my 2nd external hard drive. The Time Machine program performs automatic backups of both the Macintosh HD and the Media Drive to this drive.
If I have an issue with either the Macintosh HD (the computer) or the Media drive (the location of my pictures, movies, and music) I have a backup in that Time Machine Backup Drive that I can get my files from.
You could setup your system in the same way.
I have a "my passport" drive, but I've been warned that they are a bit sketchy.
I don't own a passport myself though I've seen them. Have you actually had an issue with it or is this someone else's reports of issues? If you have had issues with your drive you should contact the drive's manufacturer to get those resolved (assuming it's in warranty still).
If you have doubts or have had recurrent issues with one of your external drives, you might want to consider replacing it with something you do trust. Why keep a drive you think is bad? Hard drives are really quite inexpensive these days. You can get big drives for relatively little. Examples from Apple's website (but you can buy drives at pretty much any store that sells electronics).
If your shopping for a backup drive go for the largest one you can afford (you can always use more space because you will eventually fill it up). Also going for a faster connection like Firewire is a good thing to look for, though certainly not required.
    Cheers

  • Mail doesn't shut down; need to Force Quit

    Hi
Recently the Mail on my iMac has stopped shutting down (Alt-Q, or Mail/Quit, etc). To stop it, I need to Force Quit. Mail seems to go out to places I send to, and mail comes back in, but it won't shut down.
Any ideas on how to fix this?
    thanks
    dc

I've been having this problem for several months. In fact, I was experiencing it on my G5 tower, under 10.5.6, and I had hoped that replacing the entire computer with a new iMac, and a brand new operating system, would make it go away. No Joy. Apparently the MIgration Assistant helped the problem migrate to my new machine.
But I'm posting this because I think it's significant that the problem exists independently of the operating system or hardware. I think there is some kind of plug-in or extension which can be transferred between machines and software versions.
Specifics: I can't quit mail normally on the desktop which was migrated from my old machine. 'Quit' grays out in the menu, but the program doesn't stop running. I can compose, send, and retrieve email as if nothing is wrong. This problem does not appear when I create a new desktop account and log in on that one. Mail quits normally on that desktop. But on the migrated desktop, I can never quit normally. Force quit will work, though, which is an improvement over 10.5.6, when I had to do a hardware reset.

And when I Force Quit, the rule I wished to delete remains on the list.

As a temporary work around, create a new rule to 'Stop Evaluating Rules' and then drag the one you are trying to get rid of below it in the list. This should stop the rule from  being used.

  • Can't shut down Firefox without using Force Quit

will not close without using Force Quit
doesn't matter what website I am on or what I am doing

This problem persists with Firefox 3.6.16.
Moreover, force quit itself, via cmd-opt-esc, may fail.
As of last night, I was able to force quit via Activity Monitor.
As of today, the cmd-opt-esc force quit hangs, and Activity Monitor does not show the Firefox process.

  • MBP fails to shut down

Lately my MBP fails to shut down. I quit all apps and then click shut down, the dock and menu bar go away just leaving the apple desktop and the mouse (turns to the beach ball after a while). Last week I wiped my computer and started from scratch hoping it would fix the problem but it didn't. I have repaired permissions and reset the PRAM and have taken out the battery and held the power button for five seconds to reset something else (i forget what it is called). I am thinking this has something to do with time machine and my time capsule. Sometimes time machine will attempt to backup, but will sit at preparing for hours without ever mounting the image. I try to stop it but it wont stop and at that point I can't shut down. Isn't time machine supposed to stop when I shut down? Even if i force quit the backupdb process in activity monitor, my computer will not shut down. So as far as I can tell, time machine is doing something to prevent shutdown or something is but it is really getting annoying. Any help is appreciated.

Check your console log using the Console application and look around about your shut down time. Look for information about a process that did not shut down. Usually shutdown problems occur because an application you are using does not completely shut down or stops responding.
Does the computer shut down normally if you don't run any applications? Have you tried creating a new user account, then logging into that account instead of your normal account? Does the computer now shut down normally? Have you tried booting into safe mode to see if the computer will shut down normally?

  • Why Does Mac Book Pro fail to shut down?

I hope I am placing this in the correct place, as I have had enough difficulty finding where to "Post a Topic" Bought a new MacBook Pro with Leopard on 1/4/08. It fails to shut down, all I get is the spinning wheel (for want of a better word) until I am forced to press the shut off button. To date, In-store tech support has archived and re-installed, re-set the PRAM, and I don't know what's left! It seems that every time I do "something" i.e., backup, download photos, etc., even when I carefully close out the applications, and wait, the machine fails to shut down.
Does anyone out there have a solution to this problem? Is Apple working on this or are they taking the "it's you" attitude? Please advise and many thanks.

The "Genius Bar" at the Apple Store turned off the "Sync" to the iDisk. This has seemed to resolve the issue, however, MacBook Pro is not problem-free. Let me know if we "share" any other issues. Recently attempted to use Adobe Photoelements, by the way, after being told it was compatible with Leopard, IT IS NOT. So now I am going to try Aperture. Just thought I'd throw that in as "one of the other" issues! Thanks for responding to me!

  • Shut down without warning @ 30% , firewire not working , sleep mode problem

    Hello!
I seem to have a combination of problems in which I believe that somehow they must be related altogether. I would appreciate any advice you may have on the cause of these problems and/or any solutions. Here's a detailed list of the problems:
    1. The computer shuts down without warning at about 30% battery.
    2. The Firewire doesn't seem to work when I try to connect my external HD.
    3. The firewire Bus data is not shown on the System Profiler.
    4. The sleep mode doesn't work; if I press the "sleep" icon, it doesn't respond to it.
    5. When I close the lid and open it again, the screen remains turned off which requires me to force shut down the computer every time. Yet, it seems that its only the screen that does not want to come back up, the unit seems operational.
    6. The sleep light indicator does not pulse when lid is closed, it stays on.
Actions taken:I have tried resetting the Power Management Unit (PMU) to no avail. Have the battery update. Have reset the PRAM.
Thanks in advance for any help!

  • Computer shuts down without going to sleep

    hello,
i've had an increasingly swollen battery with a corresponding diminished life. to a point that it barely fit, lasted ten minutes on its own and when it became depleted, the macbook pro would just shut down without a warning.
so i bought a new one and although it lasted about 2h30 on its first cycle, when it displayed the low battery warning, the computer shut down without going to sleep...
tried resetting PRAM, and SMC to no avail.
i charged it back up a bit and it shut down again.
it's on its 3rd cycle and battery health already dropped from 100% to 94%.
    anything i can do?
    thanks...

Are you sure it is shutting down and not going to sleep "permanently"? I say this because I have (and others) a somewhat similar problem but it's not shutting down, it sleeps forever:

Also, I was going to suggest maybe your battery has died out, but you said it is plugged in, so probably not your battery as the problem.
