AOL glitches with mail application

I have a gmail account, and a aol account.  Most of the time, gmail works flawlessly, but aol as a ! next to it, it says something like "coudn't connect to server"  My password is right, but it keeps doing this, after i re-try about 10 times, it finally fetches it.  Does anyone know what is wrong?

You'll have to take up the issue of why Yahoo does not work with Mail unless it is the paid for version with Yahoo. It is their product and they made a business decision several years ago that they want payment for this type of access.

  • Cannot check mail with mail application

I keep trying to check my mail, but it gives me this error:
There may be a problem with the mail server or network. Check the settings for account ".Mac Account" or try again.
The server error encountered was: The connection to the server "mail.mac.com" on port 993 timed out.
My password is correct and I can check my mail from the wireless connection at the cafe down the road. I am thinking it has to do with my connection to the internet in my student housing. I am using a dial-up connection with which I have to change the proxy settings in the network preferences. I had to change my proxies to get my iChat to work, but I cannot find where to change them for the Mail application.
Again, it could be a different problem.

It sounds like a proxy issue. My guess is the on-campus proxy server does not use port 993 for mail. You'll either have to contact you computer help desk to find out what the correct port is, or see if the info is available online line at your university's help site. The campuses I've worked at locked down certain ports to try and keep viruses, trojans, etc., from getting into the system. Whereas Internet cafes usually leave everything open and let the user deal with any problems that occur.

  • Incoming messages issues with Mail application

I'm using an email account attached to my internet company and set up with the "Mail Application" on my Mac. For the past week, When I turn "Mail" on, the Mail Activity window would show me the incoming message in progress, ex: 1 out of 26. The process would move forward showing also the speed of the reception (KB/s) and for no reason it would stop in the middle and stop receiving any email. It would basically freeze and I have to quit Mail by "force quit". If I re-open it again, it would be doing the exact same thing and receiving again the first couple emails, always the same one that I already received and freeze in the middle. I basically can't use Mail at all lately. Any idea to fix this problem?
    Thanks

    Hi there,
    cool, I'm not alone...
I can't remember exactly, when the problem started. I guess it was around the 10.5.2 or 10.5.3 update. Before (also in Leopard) Mail worked fine.
Now I have to do the following procedure to receive an email (note: I have to repeat this for each email):
    1. Check, if mail is receiving an email (because it never completes receiving on it's own, I'm never notified of the new email).
    2. If Mail is receiving an email (check the Activity window), I have to force quit mail
    3. Launch Mail again, immediately hurrying to the Mailbox menu and setting all accounts to offline.
By now, the email has already been received from the server but not internally marked as such, so staying online would result in fetching the same email again – hanging 'afterwards' included.
    4. Select the Inbox and open the Get Account Info window by right clicking on the Inbox or pressing cmd + i.
    5. Select the corresponding account from the list (I got three POP3 accounts), e.g. the one for which the last email has been received.
    6. Manually remove this email (and only this one) from the server.
    7. Close the Get Account Info window and take all accounts online again.
    8. Check for new mail...
+If I would for example get 4 new emails, I would have to repeat this procedure 4 times.+
Yes, I'm not happy about it.
*I already did the following (using hints from other threads):*
    Remove Mail.app, and /Library/Mail/
Installing Mail.app and the /Library/Mail/ folder again from the 10.5.0 DVD using Pacifist.
Updating the former installation with the 10.5.6 Combo update
Installing the Mail Update 10.5.6 afterwards
    Removing the ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
    Restart
Launch Mail, setting up all accounts from scratch
    Create a new user
Open Mail, setting up a new account
    Reset Power Management
*So far, nothing did solve the problem.*
Next would be Archive and Install Mac OS X but I currently don't have the time for that procedure.
I have two Mac Pros (one at work, one at home) who both have this issue.
I believe, it's a bug though and will send this text to Apple via "Provide Mail Feedback" in Mail's Mail menu.

  • Yahoo or aol compatible with Mail?

I have both an AOL and Yahoo email adress, and i would like to know if both or at least one are compatible with Mail. I tried to setup Mail but it keep telling me to pick between .Mac, IMAP, POP, or Exchange.... i dunno what they mean...all i want to know is if i can get either the AOL or Yahoo mail to show up in Mail. can anyone help?

AOL accounts must be set up as IMAP accounts in Mail, and have some limitations. In particular, beware that AOL automatically purges messages from the Inbox, and you'll lose those messages if you don't move them somewhere else.
Accessing the AOL Mail System using IMAP - An Unofficial Guide
Specific instructions on how to set up an AOL account in Mail can be found here:
    http://members.aol.com/adamkb/aol/mailfaq/imap/applemail.html
The instructions are for Mail 1.3, but they can be used for Mail 2.x as well, noting that the Special Mailboxes preference pane is called Mailbox Behaviors in Mail 2.x.
As to Yahoo, I believe it can be set up as POP in Mail, but only if it's a paid account -- search the forum, there are numerous threads discussing this.

  • New Glitch with mail app setup in "Other" tab after update 5.0.1

Just for the record everyone. After the update to 5.0.1 If you have enabled iCloud on setup after you did a restore and erase-- if you had update problems as I did with my wife's iPhone-- the setup for mail is different. When you try to resetup your old email account in the mail app under the "other" tab it defaults to IMAP only --you do NOT get a choice to choose IMAP or POP after the first setup screen. Why? Lord only knows. Well, I called apple tech support and they were of no help at all and essentially shrugged their collective shoulders.         You will all be happy to know that I have solved this problem on my own and I think it bears repeating to all of you, as I am sure others have come upon this problem as well. The solution appears to be to turn off iCloud and delete the iCloud account (keep the data on your phone of course) in settings and then turn off push notifications. Then restart your phone. You may have to restart twice. Then try setting up your mail account under "other". Then when you have filled out the first setup acct screen and go to the next screen. Volia!  You should then see the option on the next setup screen to choose IMAP or POP. You can then input the settings as per your POP account as specified by your carrier. One note however, the verify process may take up to a minute or more--very slow for some reason when setting up as a POP acct. Anyway, I thought this was weird because under 5.0-- I would get the option after first email setup screen to choose HTTP, IMAP or POP??           My theory is that somehow IMAP gets defaulted as the only choice because iCloud operates that way if enabled etc. You can then turn iCloud back on as well as resetup acct-- as well as push notifications and your POP email acct should still continue to work as configured. I think this is a definite glitch or bug with the update to 5.0.1? I knew that POP was still supported since my iPhone did not need to be reset or erased after the update to 5.0.1 and my POP acct was still there working as configured but if I tried to add another POP acct under "Other" it would also only default straight to IMAP after setup screen. Very weird Bug to say the least.             I hope that helps some of you out there. I have reported this bug to Apple officially.  My setup is an iPhone 4S as is my wife's with ios 5.0.1

  • Noobie here, questions with Mail Application

I wanted to ask if you could use the same mail account into 3 different computers. Lets say that i have a laptop, adesktop and another desktop at work (all macs).
Can i register the same POP info (from gmail) into all 3 computers? Lets say that i receive a brand new email in my gmail inbox, would i be able to see it from all 3 different computers?

As Jeffrey said, you certainly could if it was a normal POP account. You don’t need IMAP just to be able to download the same messages on all computers — you’d need IMAP if you wanted full synchronization between them, though.
Problem is, Gmail POP access doesn’t work like a normal POP mail server would. Here are some of its idiosyncrasies:
    1. Messages downloaded by any conventional POP mail client are marked as downloaded at the server (but not as read on the web), and no longer available to either the same or any other POP mail client.
    2. To make already downloaded messages available for POP access again, you must go to Gmail’s Settings > Forwarding and POP page, select Enable POP for all mail, and click Save Changes, which causes everything (and I mean everything) still on the server to be downloaded again.
    3. The Mail > Preferences > Accounts > Advanced > Remove copy from server settings have absolutely no effect on the messages stored on Gmail’s server. Gmail ignores any requests to delete messages from the server made by a POP client. What happens to the messages on the server after a POP client has downloaded them is determined by Gmail’s Settings > Forwarding and POP > When messages are accessed with POP setting alone. In the case of Gmail (and only in that case), I recommend turning OFF Remove copy from server in Mail, so that Mail doesn’t even try to remove any messages from the server, regardless of whether you do actually want already downloaded messages to be removed from the server after some time or not.
    4. Messages sent using the web interface will be downloaded by your POP mail client as if they were received messages. Although this may seem weird, it's good because it allows archiving all messages locally in Mail, regardless of how they were sent — as long as you don't access the same Gmail account with more than one POP mail client, that is. You can set up a rule in Mail to automatically route those messages to the appropriate Sent mailbox (or to any other mailbox for that matter) if that's what you want.
    5. Messages sent using a POP/SMTP mail client such as Mail are also treated as if they were incoming messages for POP purposes, just as in #4. What prevents them from being downloaded is that Gmail marks them as already downloaded immediately. Since they’re on the server nonetheless, already sent messages would be downloaded together with all the other messages on the server if proceeding as described in #2.
    6. A particular case of #5 are messages sent to yourself. Instead of putting a copy of the sent message in the server’s Inbox and making it available for download, both the sent and the “received” message on the server are actually one and the same, and hence, cannot be downloaded via POP for the reason explained in #5.
    7. Gmail allows POP accounts to be set up in a special way that avoids some of these issues while introducing others. If you only need POP access to the last 30 days of mail, you can configure Mail in “recent mode”, as described in How should I use POP on mobile or multiple devices?, i.e. by typing “recent:” (including the colon but not the quotes) at the beginning of the User Name field (not in the Email Address field) in Mail > Preferences > Accounts > Account Information. Configuring the account this way would allow Mail to download messages marked by Gmail as already downloaded (and download messages sent to yourself in particular), but it would also cause all sent messages (not just messages sent to yourself or through webmail) to be downloaded as if they were received messages.

  • Glitches With Various Applications - iMac 10.5.8

My Photoshop CS 8.0 started quitting at startup after working perfect for years. Re-installed with same problem. Also noticed Garageband will start, but will not come to foreground when other applications are open. Suspect something in the iMac is affecting multiple programs, and mostly concerned about getting Photoshop. Don't know where to look.

OOPS, me bad, if it's 10.5.8 you need the 10.5 Install Disc to boot from.
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.

It's been long time that Gmail doesn't work properly with Mail application. I don't have 2-step-verification process, so I do not understand why. It happens with Hotmail as well.
    Mail says:
The Google IMAP server “imap.gmail.com” is not responding. Try checking the network connection, and that the server name is correct. Otherwise, the server might be temporarily unavailable. If you continue, you might not be able to receive messages.
    Pleas, can anyone help me?
