AOL Install Fix using CHUD Tools
Hello,
For those of you who were asking about how to fix the AOL install problem on Intel Macs, here is a tip I found at macosxhints.com:
AOL seems to have a problem installing on multi-core Intel Macs. The installation hangs at "Installing Main Database." I found a successful workaround for this problem. Go to Apple's developer website and download the CHUD Tools. Once installed, there will be a Processor preference pane in System Preferences. Use this to turn off all but one Intel processor, then run the AOL installer. Once the installer finishes, turn the processors back on. Disabling CPUs solved install issues with other apps.
JLM
Holy cow, what a piece of junk installer. SERIOUSLY?!?! The AOL engineers never in their lives tested their application on a multi-CPU machine?
Seriously. How would anyone trust something so junky to their machine.

Download CHUD Tools then massive power failure
HELP, PLEASE!!!
I've had my MACs for about 6 years now and never had any real problems. Recently however I noticed the G4 starting running quite hot and loud so I decided to use CHUD tools to cool it down a bit. I downloaded the app and ran the 'previous CHUD versions' checker as instructed. As soon as I clicked on it the machine shut down and I've been unable to restart since. (I don't think it actualy launched and I didn't get as far as installing the actual tools app)
The power light has a solid white light on when depressed, but goes no further. I've investigated the cause quite thoroughly and read all the forums about the G4 PSU failure,PRAM reset, battery changing,CPU reseting etc. I've done all of those and have the +5v trivkle on pin 1 of 24 of the PSU.
I've also tried a different hard drive in the machine - trying to ascertain whether it is the CHUD tools causing the problem (software/hardware problem?)and it still won't power up. Therefore I think that it's just a crazy coincidence that I launched CHUD and then had this failure as the 'non-CHUD infected' drive should have enabled the machine to launch I think.
So I'm wondering, I think it has to be either the PSU or power switch itself. I have the 5v trickle as mentioned, but are there further tests I can do on a 24 pin supply to confirm its status please?
If not, Is there a way of testing the power switch on the front of the machine please?
THANKS VERY MUCH IN ADVANCE FOR ANY HELP!
regards
DanEven if by 'PRAM reset' you mean use of the PMU switch, you may not have hit upon the single most useful first approach to an MDD that fails to start up: resetting the MLB.
Switch off mains power at the wall or power-board. Open the door and ground yourself on the internal metalwork, Remove the PRAM battery. Unplug the mains cable at the Mac end. (This is Apple's recommendation, but I don't follow it because Australian GPOs—power outlets—are universally grounded three-pin sockets. If your GPO tests as reliably grounded, as well as switched, you don't need to do so, either.)
Wait at least 10min. Replug the mains cable into the Mac (if you separated it above), but do not yet switch on mains power. Ground yourself again. Restore the PRAM battery only if it shows above 3.3V in circuit. Otherwise, replace it with a new battery. Wait 20sec. Press the PMU reset switch for 1sec once, and once only. If the switch bounces it will be interpreted by the PMU as two presses, with an entirely wrong outcome. The PMU is extremely sensitive to stray charge, so make sure that the hand that presses the button is also in contact with the metalwork of the door.
Close the door, switch on the mains supply and start up the Mac from the touch-sensitive 'button' on the ADC display. Given nothing worse than the Mac's former confusion as the cause of its failure, you should be up and away. If not, failure of your PSU is a distinct possibility. -
CHUD tools for current-gen 13" and Lion
Hello,
I have a current-gen 13" and I'm looking to disable hyperthreading and possibly one core and underclock using CHUD tools and hwprefs:
sudo hwprefs -v cpu_count=1
sudo hwprefs -v cpu_ht=0
When I tried installing the CHUD tools the installer went all the way through and then told me it failed, however hwprefs is available in Terminal. Running those commands shows me this:
* 2 processors available *
* processor hyperthreading enabled *
I'm glad it's smart and knows that stuff but that's not what I wanted. Does anyone have experience with this?I just sucessfully installed the CHUD tools on 10.7.2, and am now using CPUPalette.app, located in /Library/Application Support/HWPrefs. What version of Lion did you try to install CHUD on?
Alternatively, you can go into the Preferences for Instruments.app, which is installed with Lion's XCode from the App Store, and turn off processor cores. -
I just installed MacOS X Yosemite on my MacBook Air 2011. After installing Yosemite I installed the Photoshop Elements 12.1 upgrade, but now when I open the program and try to use the tools, the program freezes. How do I fix this problem?
If you use a trackpad and don't want to switch to a mouse, you can uninstall and reinstall all day long and will still have problems, but if you really want to try it, you can download PSE 12 here:

CHUD tools failed to install (want to disable HT)
hey all.
I have a 13" macbook air (2011 late version) i love it but would like to turn off HT. i have Hyper-threading off on my gaming PC and i love how much less power it uses as well as less heat output.
well when i installed the CHUD tools it fails at the end. but im still able to install the processor system pref icon. when i open up the settings the settings are missing. like clock speeds are not being shown and if i chose to unchech hyper threading and or maybe a core the settings dont stick???
is this a known issue with macbook airs or OSX 10.7.2??
i really really would like to disable Hyper threading. please help me out. thanksi have a late 2011 2.4ghz 15" mbp and am also interested inturning off HT. all the other forums i look at say There is a command you can use to turn of hyperthreading it is "sudo nvram smt=0" once you type it in it will ask you for your password. Try it and see if it changes anything becuase i have set the smt to 0 and nothing has changed for me but it may change something for you. what are you using to see how many active cores there are? istat menus?

I use photoshop elements 12 on Macbook air and the screen freezes when I try to use the tools. Then i have to force quit so i lose my work. anyone know how to fix this issue?
What version of OS X are you using? If Yosemite, you need to update to 10.10.1 or higher.
In any case, start by going to the editor preferences>general, clicking this button and restarting the editor: -
So we just got a new Macbook and I also installed the apple configurator tool. I'm using it to prepare the iPads for deployment and it won't let me prepare them? It gets an error stating "retrieving iOS info from apple" then it stops and says "internet error". My Internet connection is fine with the Mac-book. It shows the iPad is listed under the Prepare logo up top as 1 but under supervise none are shown. Although it does show itself in iTunes. Also the profile I created is fresh and has no errors. We have tryed nearly everything I cna think of and online forums are not giving us to much info on this error.
A wag at this. A port issue?
"Apple Push Notification network setup
When MDM servers and iOS devices are behind a firewall, some network configuration may need to take place in order for the MDM service to function properly. To send notifications from an MDM server to Apple Push Notification service, TCP port 2195 needs to be open. To reach the feedback service, TCP port 2196 will need to be open as well. For devices connecting to the push service over Wi-Fi, TCP port 5223 should
be open."

Try it on your home network where there isn't a lot of 'controls' -- network filtering , firewalls, etc.

I used Inkscape on Linux before moved to Mac. Now I am trying to install it
using MacPorts, but libpixman has some problems that has been reported out there.
Does any one know how to fix it without the need to use other way than MacPorts?Start with this comprehensive troubleshooting article:

Using Text Tool Freezes Photoshop CC 2014.2 x64 release
I have just updated Photoshop CC to 2014.2.0 -- 20140926.r.236 x64 release. Now I am experiencing an issue when I use the text tool to just type a few words on a new document or layer. The application seems to freeze up as soon as I start typing? I wait several minutes with nothing happening and have to resort to using the Windows task manger to kill the photoshop processes. This did not happen before I updated to this release?? Please advise how to fix this if possible to [email protected].
I'm using Windows 7 x64

TS2570 Question re: "Start from your Mac OS X Install disc; use Disk Utility"
I've worked my way through the step-by-step trouble shooting in the TS2570 article up to "Start from your Mac OS X Install disc; use Disk Utility". So far, every step results in the same outcome - my formerly trusty 2007 Intel duo core iMac (24") will not start up, freezing on a grey screen with a blinking question mark on a folder. I don't completely understand this next step. I have both a Leopard and a Snow Leopard disc. I'm not positive whether these were for the iMac, or my old Macbook Pro. I assume this makes a difference.
Question (?) Mark, Blinking Folder, or Gray Screen at Startup
These are related but not identical issues. Their causes are outlined in Intel-based Mac- Startup sequence and error codes, symbols. Solutions may be found in:
A flashing question mark appears when you start your Mac
A flashing question mark or globe appears when you start your Mac
Mac OS X- Gray screen appears during startup
In most cases the problems may be caused by one or more of these:
a. Problem with the computer's PRAM - See Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM.
b. Boot drive's directory has been corrupted - Repair with Disk Utility.
c. Critical system files are damaged or deleted - Reinstall OS X.
d. The disk drive is physically non-functional - Replace the hard drive.
Note that the information I have provided is what Apple recommends, If other users suggest different solutions than found here, then be sure what they recommend does not impact on your warranty, if any, or ability to get continuing Apple service.
Please don't start removing drives or changing cables unless you know what you are doing and have exhausted other non-invasive alternatives outlined here. If you perform any work yourself that is unapproved by Apple, then you will void any warranty you may have and lose all further Apple Support.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
The main difference if you are using Lion or Mountain Lion is that you must first boot from the Recovery HD. Simply boot from the Recovery HD to perform the above.
Reinstall Snow Leopard Without Erasing The drive
(SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported.
2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed with reinstalling OS X. Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files. After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing The Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless. -
To use this tool you must first connect to server.
Hi all:
I am new to Oracle. After installing Oracle 10g I tried to run it but I had Directory Server Connection window popup. It said "To use this tool you must first connect to server. Click on the OK button to select a server". I did not see any server I could choose. And also during installation I had warning or error message but I chose to continue installing.
Please help me to get this fix....
Thank you

Computer idling sound | CHUD tools...
Hi there,
Since a few weeks (I guess since I installed OS X.4), I've noticed that my computer makes a subtle sound (kind of metallic) every single second. It's driving me crazy.
In the this page: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86523 I discovered that my computer makes the the computer idling sound (the first one on the page).
I downloaded the CHUD tools, but I have no idea how they works... I don't understand anything! (Apparently, it will install a System Preference pane for the processor. With it, you can disable CPU nap, which lessens the noise for some.)
And turning the speakers up a bit won't help me because I work without music... I need quiet to concentrate.
Thanks!

There are various opinions on whether it will damage your machine over a period of time. It does indeed increase the temp' though (I have tested it on my 2.3 dual machine). My opinion is that you should monitor the G5 while using it with NAP off. In my case, it only varied by 10 degrees, which is not a lot.
Just do a search on the word "NAP" and you will see many emails on this subject. It was a hot (no pun intended) topic on this forum at one time.

Chud Tools 'Allow Nap' Problems
Hi all, before i go down the road of trying to get my powerbook looked at by an agent can anybody tell if they have had the same problems and managed to get them resolved via an apple specialist or will i just be fobbed off.
Here's the problem. I launch Pro Tools and the powerbook makes a real loud static fuzz sound. I untick the 'allow nap' feature in the processor pane of chud tools and the sound stops. Also when i'm using intense apps like FCP and Motion i get a grinding hamster wheel sound. Once again i untick 'allow nap' and the problem go's away. I think downloading a developer tool and messing with the processor isnt really much cop for a £1300 laptop. Can anybody shed any light and more importantly has anybody managed to resolve this problem.
Regards
Mike
PS: The sounds emit from around the top left of the powerbook and they are not coming out of the speakers. As for the sound issues have a look as there is some idea about a fix comming in 10.4.5
http://www.appleinsider.com/article.php?id=1519
Likely you might have more luck with the UNIX forums under support/osx technology's /unix as maybe there might be inteligent life but not when I needed it.
PS: the NAP option is not permanetly disabled and if you managed to get it permanently disabled the you should be well on you way.
I just erased / reinstalled and avoided any unneaded files/programs and mine is running like a charm.
I even stress test it with UT2004 at max playable options for 5 hours spectating online and getting some good maps in the same time and it still runs like a charm.
There where just a few creaking movement noises as the part adjusted to the heat but it runs cool @ avg 60C.
Hope this helps.
Have you seacrhed for "disable nap" on google or macupdate.com etc. etc.
There might be a permanent fix there. -
Hello.
I looked through the older web sites of IBM regarding the usage of JCOP tools under Linux.
I am interested in following questions:
1. Is there any separate distributon version of JCOP tools for Linux?
2. Can sample JCOP tools 3.1.2 plugin (for Windows) be used under Linux. What has to be modified? Also what additional tools have to be installed an used for communication with real cards through PC/SC readers.
3. Is JCOP simulation option available under Linux?
I'll appreciate any help.
Best regards,

newbieEverything should work, except for the target pack and the non-existent Linux Pegoda driver.1. The is no seperate Linux distribution. You just need a Linux distribution for Eclipse.JCOP Tools plugin should work under Linux, except for the target pack and the non-existent Pegoda driver for Linux.1. 2. Prior to JCOP Tools 3.1.2 the last time something was mentioned about Linux was in the release notes of 3.1.1b . In version 3.2.0 IBM added a linux_support page to the JCOP Tools user guide (see release notes and linux_support page below).
3. There shouldn't be any problems with the generic simulation. The target pack runs only with Windows though.

h2. Using JCOP Tools with Linux (>= 3.2.0)
h3. ___
Overview
The current JCOP Tools release now also offer a version for the popular Linux
operating system. Both the Windows and Linux verson provide more or less the same
functionality, and JCOP application development can thus fully succeed on Linux systems.
Nevertheless, installation of the JCOP Tools differ between Windows and Linux
where the Linux version does not provide a simple installer as in case of Windows.
Additionally, the Linux version expects a properly setup Muscle PCSC installation
as soon as you want to use them together with physical, real cards. As Muscle
PCSC is still not shipped with most Linux distributions, you must download and
install them separately from the JCOP Tools.

Software Requirements
Linux distribution
The JCOP Tools simulation has been developed on a Fedora Core 6 system, but should also work in case of
many other recent Linux distributions.
Java Development Kit
The JCOP Tools have been developed and tested with the Sun JDK 1.4.2_13-b06
for Linux. Your success with other Development Kits may vary as there are
partly subtle differences across the different devlopment kits.
PCSC
The JCOP Tools use PCSC to talk with real cards on Linux. Most distributions
do not ship with Linux PCSC by default (Fedora Core 6 does), you must thus download it fromhttp://www.linuxnet.com
and install it by yourself. If you are used to software installation under Linux,
and are not afraid of compiling and installing software packages, this should
not be a hard problem. You have to download both the base PCSC package
(including PCSC daemon and client libraries) and separately the driver
for the reader you want to use. The PCSC package contains a test program
which should tell you whether your installation is set up correctly and
communicating with a card works. The JCOP Tools have been reported to
work together with Muscle PCSC version 1.3.1-7.
JPCSC
The JCOP Tools are shipped with JPCSC which you can also download athttp://www.linuxnet.com. JPCSC
is a JNI library which offers Java applications the access to PC/SC functions
by mapping their requests to an underlying native PC/SC implementation. The JCOP
Tools - mostly written in Java - thus depend on JPCSC to communicate with real cards
on Linux. JPCSC depends on a properly installed and setup PC/SC environment.
Especially, the JAVA_LIBRARY_PATH should list the directories where the
PC/SC client libraries and the native JPCSC library libjpcsc.so ( downloadable as binary from
Windows Binary Download Here )
are installed, the CLASSPATH variable should list th___
Miscellaneous
What should work
As soon as you setup your system correctly, there should only be minor differences
between using JCOP Tools on Windows or on Linux. Emulating a real JCOP,
debugging, shell, cap-file conersion should all be possible as in case of Windows.
What is missing
No drivers or tools are currently available for using JCOP30's in contactless
mode. If you need such support, please contact directly NXP
at for further assistance.

Can't use some tools in Ps cs6 trial
I downloaded the Photoshop cs6 trial yesterday, and it worked fine. Today, however, I can't choose colors or draw shapes. I keep getting the message "Could not use [insert tool name] because of program error." What can I do to fix this? Am I allowed to uninstall, re-download, and re-install the trial version if I have already done so (today is only day 2 since I downloaded it)?
Welcome to the forum.
With the trail, I would NOT uninstall it.
As for the issues with some Tools, can you please tell us first, exactly what you are working with? A screen-cap of your GUI, with the Open Image (or New Image) showing, plus the Layers Panel open, would be very useful. Also, including the Options Panel for one of the problem Tools, might give clues.
Next, let us know exactly what you wish to do, and how you are going about it. The more detail, the better.
It is probably something simple, and something that is easily handled. If not, then you might also gather the details of your computer, as that info might be useful in the next step.
Good luck,
Hunt
