AOL Problems

For a couple of days AOL wasn't allowing Mail to access their servers, and posts on this forum pointed to AOL as the problem. Well that seems to have been cured, at least for incoming mail. I still cannot send mail. I've re-entered my password. Deleted and added smtp.aol.com as outgoing mail server. I can send mail from my iPhone but not my computer. Any suggestions?

Hi Alli!
I can probably help you, but I need additional information.
What version of OS are you running?
Which model iBook are you using?
What size is your Hard Drive, and how much space is available?
How much RAM is installed, and is it original or added?
Have you added any extra fonts?
Is AOL the only program that is causing you problems?
Exactly what did you send to the Trash?
Where are you downloading the AOL application from, and which version of AOL are you downloading?
Here Welcome To America Online!, is a good source.
Choose America Online for Mac OS X, if you are using OS X.
I can instruct you how to uninstall, and reinstall AOL, if you would like.
That is probably the best action to take. You may have bits & pieces of the previous installs, that are causing problems.
There is no single AOL .plist file to trash, as AOL preferences are structured differently than Apple application preferences.
Do you have any Favorites, Emails, Email Addresses, etc., that you would like to preserve?
EDIT: I also need to know how you connect. Internal Modem, DSL, cable, etc.

  • Flash 8 + AOL = Problems

    Hey All,
I've learned it's best to do as much research as you can
before posting on these forums, and that's exactly what I've done.
So, I now turn to you all as a last resort (and from the handful of
posts I've seen regarding problems with the AOL browser on the
forums, if anyone has any information, it'll be helpful to those
    folks, as well).
    I've been working on a website (
    http://www.reallivesports.com
) that is almost entirely Flash-based. Everything shows up just
fine in IE, Netscape, and Firefox. However, I'm getting reports
from AOL users that the site is getting hung up or not loading
correctly if they try to view it using the AOL browser.
From what I've been finding online, AOL uses IE and is simply
masked by an AOL interface. So, theoretically, if the website works
in IE, then it should work in AOL just fine. However, I'm finding
this is not the case. I do not personally use AOL, but I had
someone that does try and visit the site in first their default AOL
browser...and then I had them minimize the AOL browser and try
opening it in IE on the same machine. The AOL browser had problems.
The IE browser showed the site just fine.
I've had 2 scenarios reported to me. Either A) the site
doesn' t load correctly and the user is left with the view of the
page's background color, or B) the main page loads fine, but when
attempting to visit a new section of the page, the loading bar of
    the page progresses, then freezes.
I've visited the AOL technical support pages to see if
there's any mention of problems viewing Flash in the AOL browser,
but came up short. Another random link I found during a search in
Google had to do with ad specifications for advertising with AOL.
There I found that AOL is not currently accepting ads that use
Flash 8 (which is what I'm working in). Would this mean that AOL is
currently having trouble displaying Flash 8 content?
The flash content on my website is a 1-frame .swf file that
uses an XML ActionScript object to find and preload various
external child .swf files and .mp3 files from an external XML data
file. All child .swf files are kept loaded simultaneously, though
all but the currently "active" child .swf file are paused and set
invisible. All external .mp3 files are stored in ActionScript Sound
objects in the parent .swf, and played by child .swfs by calling a
    function in the parent .swf.
If anyone has any information that can help me find a way for
AOL users to view my website without problems, I'd greatly
appreciate it. We're currently in the middle of putting together an
html/php version of the website for non-flash users (as it will be
a good default solution if more problems like this occur). Thank
you for your time. I hope to get some replies soon.

  • Is this a computer problem or an AOL problem?

When I bring my e-mail up on my laptop, sometimes in the upper right corner of the screen a note comes up for a second and disappears that says my email is unavailable. I'm wondering why that is happening and what does it mean? Is it a problem with my wifi or a glitch with my laptop. I have no clue. Can anyone help me figure this out?
    Thanks,
    Suzecruise

    suze,
please provide the full model number of your computer.  it is printed on the back.  do not provide the serial number.
can you take a picture of what you are talking about and attach it to your reply?  Likely this is a AOL issue, and you may want to go to their forum and post in there as well.

  • Please help me with an AOL problem

I have been on the phone with Apple and AOL with this problem and both say to call the other one. I am about to run out of time to return my iPhone if this doesn't work.
I have two AOL accounts. The first one [email protected] is listed in iTunes and is my default account. In settings this account has all the information regarding incoming and outcoming servers. I have changed the outgoing port number for 567, 25, 234 (?), and cwmx.com with the SSL on and off. I have tried with the wifi on and off. I am just not getting any emails, can't send any, although they go into outbox and just sit. This is my personal consulting business account and I cannot communicate with my clients.
The second account - in settings doesn't have any incoming or outgoing server information listed and I can get and send emails. When it checks for emails, it says there are three emails waiting to be send (from the mxxx account). Go figure.
Please, please help me address this problem. Thank you in advance

    Whoa, slow down…
The settings for SMTP for AOL or AIM Mail are:
    • port 587
    • SSL enabled
    • authentication via password
That's it. What's up with 567, 25, and 234? Or, with cwmx.com and SSL on or off? Only the settings listed above will work correctly.
If the alternate account does not have any values set for SMTP, where is it getting the data and how is it operating properly?

  • Mac Mail IMAP Problem: Actually Seems to Be an AOL Problem

For what it is worth, After much futile tweaking, it would appear that what I, and a number of other users thought was a Mac Mail problem, to wit, the need to Offline>OnLine to get mail, may actually be a problem with AOL (and possibly other e-mail services).
Apparently, AOL is manipulating its outbound mail port(s) to limit server demand. I've reached this conclusion after noticing how on weekends and nights, mail seems to work fine with AOL.
    Comments anyone?

  • AOL problems and crashes during games

    Folks:
Most every time I download software updates, I cannot access AOL. It happened again yesterday. I tried trashing the preferences, but that hasn't worked.
Also, certain games we play crash suddenly and for no reason. We don't have this problem with other programs, just games. We're able to relaunch the game and play again, for the most part. Could that be a RAM problem and if so, why since we have a gig of RAM and these games don't call for that much?
Thanks for any and all help.

    Hi Again Theresa!
I also had some updates, that needed to be installed on my MacBook, so I installed them this afternoon, to see if I could replicate your experience.
Sure enough, AOL hung on Initializing!
So after quitting, and force quitting AOL, I moved the files and folders listed below, to the Trash.
I then restarted the MacBook, ran Repair Permissions for good measure, and loaded AOL.
It took longer than usual, but it did finish starting!
In HD > Users > Home Account > Library > Preferences:
    AOL a folder
    com.aol.aol.plist a file
In HD > Users > Shared > America Online:
    Access Numbers a file
    Art Database a file
    Bart Cache a folder
    Buddy Icon Cache a folder
    Disconnect Log a file
    Your Feedbag a file
    Session Diagnostics a file
If this procedure works for you, don't forget to reset the AOL Preferences.
    Repost if you're not successful.

  • Ongoing AOL problems

Starting today, my old AOL for Mac OS X does not sign on at all now. It was bad enough that it had many glitches with Leopard. Now it appears to be fully non-functioning. I downloaded the latest AOL Desktop for Mac beta (version 4) which is better than the last one--at least I can print. Still no available address book that I can see. I would prefer an application like the old one, but one that works. Anyone??

For some reason, I can only sign on now after I click the "remind me later" box at sign on. Still stinks.

  • Imail & AOL - PROBLEMS....I cannot save AOL mail into my iMail application.

Can anyone please tell me why I cannot save any AOL email I compose (and it's only when I write an email). I always get a simple error saying it cannot be saved.....I have other email accounts set up through my iMail and they are all saved - or better yet, I can see them in my "sent" box. AOL never shows up in my "sent" box....
    Anyone? Anyone?
    Thanks!

Go to Mail > Preferences > Accounts and under the Mailbox Behaviors tab for your AOL account preferences, what is your selection for saving Sent messages?

  • AOL problem - blank screen

Can anyone suggest an answer to this:
Whenever I sign onto AOL, I am faced with a blank screen except for a small asterisk in the top left hand corner.
Also, when I try to open any links in an email, I get the same blank screen.
I have reinstalled the AOL for Mac OS X, but this made no difference.

We have had several discussions with their 'tech support' but they do not have any trained mac experts; They also claim that all they have to do is to help the customer to get online.
I can get online to access emails and the send them.
What I don't understand is that, using the same AOL software, AOL works correctly on our iMac but not on the MacBook.

  • Mail not allowing aol connection?

I suddenly am unable to connect to aol, but can get to my exchange and mobile me accounts. Any thoughts on what would have caused this over the last three days? I did install Mackeeper around this same time. Is there a possible conflict?
    Thanks.

Since I'm seeing three different people with the same problem posting today, all within the top 20 messages on this forum, I'm guessing it's an AOL problem.  Check with them.

  • AOL mail getting deleted using Apple Mail

My AOL mail seems to be getting deleted after about a week or so in my inbox. I am using the Apple MAIL with two accounts. One is the AOL and the other is RoadRunner accont. After I have read the e-mail, I have noticed that it would be deleted and I cannot find it in the recently deleted mails.
Is this an AOL problem or setting I need to change or is it on MAIL?

I was experiencing this problem also. Having received no help from AOL online tech support, I created a workaround following the instructions in the posts in this forum by creating a local "On My Mac" mailbox and a rule moving the incoming mail into the On My Mac mailbox.
So far so good. The new problem is, that I have two mail accounts in Apple Mail, my AOL account and my .mac account. My husband also has a mail account (AOL mail). His messages are being moved into my On My Mac mailbox as well as mine. He is not a very clever computer user and will probably be unable to deal with this.
Is there a way to modify my rule so that it doesn't move his messages?
    Thanks!

  • AOL & Flash Player 10 Incompatibility

Here we go again and again and again... Found out some time ago when my AOL "Finance" dropdown menu was blank that there was a problem after downloading Adobe Flash Player 10, but some things require that version to be played. AOL said the fix (early last year) was to remove version 10 and reinstall version 9. So I inconvenienced myself to do just that. Problem is everytime that ballon appears saying Adobe has another update appears the whole problem starts all over. Guess AOL is hitching a free ride on Adobe and Adobe ain't budgin to fix a problem for a freeloader. You'd think AOL would have the money to fix it with the fee I pay and all the advertising that's popping up all over the page (even the bottom of the email has a constantly changing ad). And of course I can't talk to Adobe without them charging me so what's a guy to do but close the AOL account for once and for all. It's too bad though cause AOL used to be such a good site before they sacrificed customer service for more and more profit.  Kinda reminds me of the corporate leaders of America for the curent and recent generations. They sacraficed not only customer service, but American jobs as well to make a little more profit by setting up shop overseas.
What we need is good corporate stewardship which equates to patriotic leadership!!!

Hi,  I figured AOL out over 3 years ago and deleted every file that they invaded and the following year found 15 more!! Had they at the time had an AOL Uninstaller, I would have used it. There are some things that you don't want on your computer even if it's free.
I agree with your last sentence:-)
Well the advice to go back to FP version 9 is typical.  Adobe updated to patch insecurities that was in vs 9 and to add new benefits.
Don't you have another ISP you can use?
I don't see this as a problem of Adobe's. To me it's no different than a website that your updated FP won't work on because they don't want to update their website so it will. So they tell you to go back and install a version that is in the Adobe archives. LOL Or if a third party ActiveX doesn't work properly, some think Adobe or Microsoft should write code so it does. There is a pecking order here that a lot of people overlook, right?
If you update to the latest version of FP, you are going to have the same problem as long as you use AOL.
Not a good decision you have to make, but it is what it is. This is an AOL problem, not Adobe's.
    Thanks,

  • Delays in loading AOL mail to Apple Mail

There are times that no AOL mail appears in my Apple Mail but if I go to the AOL website, there is unread mail there.  It will eventaully come through but may be 24-36 hours later.
    Is it AOL or Apple?
I use my old AOL account as my "shopping" email for retail purchases, etc. that aren't important enough to send to my iphone. That way, when I order something online, all the subsequent ads aren't arriving on my phone.
I am using a MacBook Pro with 10.6.8
    Any clues?

Associates of mine are having these same issues ...
They are NOT on AOL ... but a variety of other standard email servers ...
So, it does not appear to be an AOL problem.
But rather with Apple Mail in particular.
My old AOL app, far outdated now (but still works) ... does not have these issues ...
I wish Apple would not become involved in applications it does not intend to actually support and develop properly, over the twists and turns in it's own OS .... and hardware systems.
I've still not taken the time to switch away from Apple Mail, but ... the situation is not getting any better ....
It is obviously something wrong in their system, because:
Other services have the same problem ...
and the problem is not consistence or predictable ...
the same on a variety of computers, and a variety of Mac OSs ...
I've found no reliable 'fix' for it, other than waiting ... until Apple Mail decides to actually deliver my mail ...
    Sometimes over a DAY late.
Sometimes, a message will come in, then dissapear completely, no trace of it ...
Then reappear at some point later ....  Or sometimes not at all ....
And the crazy thing is ...
      Sometimes-
Not all the messages are late ...
Sometimes just a message or two. Even from the same service ....
Usually though- Everything .... is late ... from all services ... not just AOL ...
               Often-
Nothing comes in for many hours ... then poof-  a pile of stuff appears, all at once.
I've at least gotten a sense of when it's 'withholding' my emails ...
Does anyone know either a fix for this, or a better- reliable mail application for Mac?
    This is an unacceptable situation.
    Thanks!
    ps:
    I should note:
There is nothing wrong with my internet service.
I am working regularly online, at fairly high speeds.
    Typically 20.7 down, 4.7 up

  • Aol mail works, but aol videos don't. also, aol stays on page 1 of day's news stories. arrows don't work.

AOL opens as usual, but I can't move from page 1 of the day's news stories. The arrows don't work and the bar at the top says: aol.com/#. AOL videos go to "connecting." but don't play. My AOL mail account works fine. There are no AOL problems using IE.
Problems started 2 days ago. I'm a low-tech sort, but have tried various fixes suggested in the help section. Currently using Firefox 9.0.1 with Adobe and Silverlight plug-ins. No add-ons. No known (to me) changes 2 days ago that could have caused this. What's the fix? Please advise.
