AP 1310 and WAP54g Linksys

Hi, Im trying to set up a Wireless network. I have got a aironet 1310 in the AP mode with a 12 dB antenna in a campus, In some areas the signal its not strong.
Now a Decide to use some linksys WAP54g in the repeater mode. I dont have any security aplied on the equipment.
Im using the same Channel, the same SSID for both devices. but still i can gte for both devices work each other!!!
I think i am missing some thing on the 1310.......
TKS

I've used the rule of thumb that higher than 10dBi is a high gain antenna, ~5-9dBi is nominal gain. Again this is my rule of thumb and the official Cisco documentation may say something different.
The path loss for 2.4Ghz with concrete is between 10-15dB. Every 3dB is a half of the original signal and ever 10dB is a tenth of the signal.
My previous theory may or not be correct based on how you have the antenna mounted and the relative position of your stations(users laptops). Purely as an example and not using the specs of the antenna.. If you have the antenna mounted 50' above the ground and the users laptop is at 4', your going to have some coverage issues.
1 square Km is very aggressive with a single AP. You will likely have speed/connectivity issues or the lack of cell coverage all together as an outdoor environment has trees, poles, and also everyone else's 2.4ghz wlan. Your lucky to get 300' in most environments and thats at 1mb!
The simple reply to this, is that this sounds like you will need to look at additional APs and may want to consider the mesh technology.

  • WRT54G V.5 and WAP54G in "Repeater Mode" works flawlessly!

If any of you've wondered if the combination of a Linksys WRTG54 V 5.0 Wireless Router and a Linksys WAP54G can function in "Repeater Mode". The answer is Yes. Repeater mode means to repeat your Lan wirelessly. All clients of the WAP54G are on the same network as the WRT54G i.e. 192.168.1.0 and are DHCP clients of the WRT54G.
SSID is the same, the encryption I use is WPS-PSK with TKIP, Channel is the Same. PassPhrase is the same.
Setup is simple just follow the User Guide with one exception. The  exception being when you configure the WAP54G in "Repeater mode" enter the "Wireless MAC address of the WRT54G router, not the "LAN" MAC address as the user guide says.
I've extended my network to my Bro's across the street, with external antenna's ,the speed is great almost like being at home, when close to the WAP54G. One drawback is the coverage is poor except when in close proximity to the WAP54G. I'm looking into a 2.4 ghz bidirectional Wlan amplifier to hook up to the WAP54G for extending the wireless coverage.

The WAP54G also works with the 300N wireless router.

  • Macbook Pro 10.6.8 constantly drops my wi-fi network and joins Linksys which works but very slow

My Macbook Pro constantly drops my network and joins Linksys. It connects to the Internet but is painfully slow. Choosing my network again works for a while than goes back to Linksys. Any sugestions?

Try going to system preferences/network/advanced, airport tab, in the prefered networks pane highlight and drag your net work to the top of the list. See if it then chooses your network as prefered, hope this helps.

  • HT4260 I have an AirPort Extreme and a linksys router. What is the best way to get 6-8 wired connections with ac speeds?

I have an AirPort Extreme and a linksys router. What is the best way to get 6-8 wired connections with ac speeds?
    Appreciate your assistance.

The answer depends on whether the AirPort Extreme is your main router....or...the Linksys device is your main router.
In either case, the two devices must connect together using a wired Ethernet connection using CAT5e or CAT6 cabling.
Any version of the AirPort Extreme produced within the last 5 years will have Gigabit Ethernet ports. In order to get the same speeds from the Linksys router, it will also need to be Gigabit Ethernet capable.
If you need additional Ethernet ports, you will need to add a Gigabit Ethernet switch to either the AirPort Extreme or Linksys router.
It is assumed that your other devices connecting to the AirPort Extreme and Linksys router will also have Gigabit Ethernet capability.
Not sure why you mention "ac" speeds in your post. This relates to wireless connections, not wired.

  • How to connect WRT54GX and WAP54G

    Hi,
I am using WRT54GX router and WAP54G access point in same floor. Could you please let me know how to connect access point with router? Kindly provide setting.
    Thanks!
    Gaurav

Hi, first connect one of your Pc to the router and log into the setup page of the router with http://192.168.1.1 . The username is blank and the password is admin. Under the wireless tab make a note of the ssid, wireless channel and under the wireless security page also make a note of the wep keys if you have provided any. Then click on the status tab and under the status tab you can click on the Local Network and note the Mac Address mentioned on this screen You can then connect the wap54g to the router and log into the setup page o the access point by http://192.168.1.245 . The username is blank and the password is admin. On the wireless screen you can change the ssid, the channel and the wep encryption accordingly.
Then on the setup screen you can click on the AP Mode and select the mode as Wireless Repeater an punch the Mac Address and then click on save settings. You can then unplug the access point from the router in order to get it working wirelessly.

  • Wireless repeater using wrt54g and wap54g

i am having problems connecting my wrt54g and wap54g as wireless repeater. my setup is as follows: 1. wrt54g (192.168.1.10) is connected to a dsl provider modem/router (192.168.1.1) (dhcp server). With this setup i do not have any problems connecting my wired pc and laptop to the network. 2. on my 2nd floor the signal is faint thus i need to extend the wireless signal. 3. i have a wap54g (192.168.1.12) that i would like to repeat the signal of the wrt54g. 4. i tried the guide from the website but it was general thus there are some settings (recommended) that are missing. questions: 1. does the 2 wireless ap need to have the same SSID, channel and wep settings? 2. what should be the gateway for the wap54g? 192.168.1.1? 3. when using wifi, would i see 2 access point? or a single 1 and whoever is nearer? 4. does the wrt54g need to be a dhcp server? or the 192.168.1.1 can do that. 5. does my ideal setup be 2 AP and not 1 wireless router/ap and 1 ap? 6. can the wrt54g use wireless distribution mesh? 7. i cannot see my wrt54g from the firware downloads, mine is v7 and there are only v6 and v8? am from asia and this might be an asian version? any help would be appreciated.

what i did was the following: 1. enable wap54g as a wireless client to look for the main ssid. 2. copy the mac address to the option for wireless repeater. 3. i can now use the wap54g as a repeater. when i shut down everything and turn it on, i cannot again hook up. again, i have to do the steps above for the wap54g to act as a repeater. any idea on what the problem is? i am sure that what i am putting on the mac address is correct. even when i shut down and turn on all router and accesspoints. the connection seems lost.

  • WRE54G and WAP54G DHCP Problem

    Hi,
    Please can someone help me.
    Current setup:-
Cisco ASA 5505 with DHCP Server enabled on the inside interface.
Linksys  WAP54G cabled directly into the above interface on the Cisco ASA.
Linksys WRE54G with a wireless connection to the above access point using the same SSID and Channel.
When connecting my laptop to the linksys access point, the laptop obtains an IP address allocated from the Cisco ASA and works perfectly.
When adding the WRE range extender into the mix and connecting my laptop via the extender the laptop fails to obtain an IP address. The extender is connecting to the AP ok, it has 2 blue lights and i get a strong signal.
I have carried out packet captures on both my laptop and the inside interface of the CISCO ASA. The capture on my laptop shows DHCP discovery packets leaving my wireless interface, however, i receive no acknowledgement. when i run the same capture on the Cisco ASA i see the discovery packet hit the interface and a subsequent dhcp offer packet leave the interface, however, the offer packet does not reach the laptop when connecting via the extender.
Can anyone kindly offer any advise that doesnt involve throwing the extender in the bin!!?
    Thanks

The WRE54G is connected after the WAP.
The router's IP is 10.10.10.254 and is configured to allocate DHCP addresses within this range.
The AP's management IP is 10.10.10.1 and the gateway is 10.10.10.254 (router address).
The Extender's management IP is 10.10.10.2 and the gateway is 10.10.10.254 (router address).
When connecting to the wireless network via the AP, it connects and receives an address.
When connecting to the wireless network via the extender, it connects but does not receive a DHCP address. Signal is strong and the extender shows both blue lights.

  • WET54G to connect a WRT54G and WAP54G?

I currently live in western Uganda where we have set up a wireless network to share a satellite ISP connection (between houses separated by about 100 meters).
The system has been previously configured as follows (the ISP requires that we use their set of Static IPaddresses).
Our old system looked like this (and this wireless network has worked for us for about 5 years!)
    WAP54G (call it #1)
WAP54G  v.2  (call it #2)  - this one is connected to the satellite gateway via Ethernet 8-port Linksys switch
     WAP54G ( #1)
    IP Address  172.16.148.204
    Subnet 255.255.255.224
    Gateway   172.16.148.193
    Mode: AP
    Channel - 6
    SSID: CCRouter
    WAP54G (#2)
    IP address 172.16.148.199
    Subnet mask 255.255.255.255.224
    gateway 172.16.148.193
    Mode: Client
    channel 6
    SSID: CCRouter
The WAP54G #1 allowed us to disconnect the standard small rear antennas and connect large external parabolic antennas (via coaxial cables) which could be roof mounted and allow distant houses to catch the broadcasted wireless signal.
In a rainstorm, the WAP54G#1 died.
So, all we have now is a WRT54G which does not have disconnect-able rear antennas.  We do have , however, a WET54G Ethernet bridge.
The WET54G has a connector which will allow us to connect to a roof-mountable unidirectional rod antenna via coax cable.  The WET54G can connect to the WRT54G via Ethernet cable.
The current settings are as follows:
    1
     IP address 172.16.148.204
     Subnet 255.255.255.224
     Gateway 172.16.148.193
    Mode: AP
    Channel - 6
    SSID - CCRouter
    2
     IP Address: 172.16.148.199
     Subnet 255.255.255.224
    Gateway 172.16.148.193
    Mode: Client
    Channel 6
    SSID CCRouter
(connected to the satellite gateway via the Ethernet 8port switch)
    BRIDGE
    172.16.148.212
      255.255.255.255.224
    gateway 172.16.148.193
    channel 6
    SSID CCRouter
    Mode infrastructure
BUT THIS IS NOT WORKING.  The WRT54G (#1) can connect to the Internet (through the Client) when in CLOSE Range to the Client (WAP54G #2), but the Bridge does not seem connected to the Client WAP (the Ethernet light on the Bridge is constant indicating that the Ethernet connection is OK, but the Wireless light does not blink (no connection)..
    Thoughts?
    Thank you.

Are you able to go online when you connect the computer to the bridge directly...?
On which port you have connected the bridge to the router..? It should be on the Ethernet port.

  • Hooking up a Westell E90-610015-06 and a Linksys WRT 160N?

Please help me.  I have spent hours trying to get my Linsys WRT 160N wireless router to work with my Westell 6100 modem (E90-610015-06).  I have tried the suggestions from dslreports, so please do not send me a link to this website.  Setting the modem to bridge and setting the wireless router to PPPoE does not work.  Also, changing the IP address on the router does not work.  Does anyone have any other ideas?

changing the IP Address does work.
You might be doing something differently.
Let me tell you a few things to check
You have to open your NIC properties
make sure its set like this
Then plug your PC into your linksys, or make sure you connect to it wirelessly.
    put in 192.168.1.1
    http://ui.linksys.com/files/WRT54G/v1-v4/4.20.7/
Change the  Local IP Address on the first page to reflect 192.168.0.1.
Then plug your linksys into the westell.
reboot the linksys, then reboot the pc (or you can do a repair, or an ipconfig/release and ipconfig/renew in DOS) and as long as the westell is online, everything else will pass internet traffic through
I hook those up all the time the same way and they work just fine.
if it doesn't work again this time let us know, and KEEP IN MIND this is how it should ultimately look
Wall -> westell -> linksys plugged into the yellow ethernet port, and plugged into where it says WAN on the linksys
then your PC wirelessly connects to the linksys.

  • Airport and WRT54G (LINKSYS)

Does any use the Linksys WRT54G with thier Mac? I bought one knowing it wasn't Mac compatable because I was just going to use it to play my Xbox wireless, but wanted to get airport down the road. I have an iBook and just wanted to know if anyone used it or if they had any problems. Thanks.

    Hey Guys,
Just wanted to update you on this process. After tooling around with some 3rd party firmware, some de-bricking techniques (mainly due to me not reading instructions!), and a bit-o-patience...I have my AX sucessfully working with my WRT54G, and the AX is working as my "wireless adapter" for the xbox!
As Henry said, it would be MUCH simpler to purchase a wireless game adapter...and use apple approved base stations (go figure!), but it can be done if you have some time and patience.
I really considered myself fairly dumb on how wireless/routers/etc interacted, and this whole experience boosted me into mild-network-guru status, "mild" being the key word.

  • Point to point wireless using 1310 and 1231 on each site

    Hi,
I have an implementation right now with wireless point to point bridging connection. I installed a 1310 with 24 dBi external antenna on one site and a 1231 AP/bridge with 24 dBi antenna on the other site. Has anyone of you tried this set-up. I have no problem with the connection and pinging is ok. However when I tested the throughput I only got 2Mbps in which the distance between the two sites is only 2 kms. I am hoping to have a throughput about 20 Mbps and up.

When you configure the AP radio, you must consider the type of clients that are present in the wireless network. If the AP has an 802.11g radio and the WLAN has only 802.11g clients, you can set one or more data rates to Basic and all other data rates to Enabled However, if you have a mixed environment of both 802.11b and 802.11g clients in a WLAN network, you must ensure that only the rates that 802.11b supports are set to Basic (or Require in GUI). If data rates that the 802.11b radio does not support (such as 12 Mbps) are set to Basic on the AP radio, the 802.11b clients are not able to associate to the AP.
Alternatively, you can configure the AP radio to select data rates on the basis of range or throughput. When you configure the AP radio to select data rates for range, the AP sets the lowest data rate to Basic and the other rates to Enabled. In this way, the AP can cover a wider area. However, the data rate comes down as the distance from the AP to the client increases. If you configure the AP radio for throughput, the AP sets all data rates to Basic. This configuration ensures a consistent throughput throughout the coverage area.

  • WRT54G2 setup and using Linksys software

After installing the router and Linksys software (which had it's problems) I attempted to enter the setup using my browser and the address given in the instruction manual which I had downloaded from your site. This was 192.168.1.1. Although typing in this number produced the login pop up, when I typed in the default password, admim, I could not get into the setup pages. However if I used the gateway - advanced settings in the Linksys software I could get into the setup. I took me some time to spot that the address, when using the Linksys software was not 192.168.1.1 but 192.168.0.1. Is the published address in the manual wrong or is the installation routine incorrectly changing it.
Also when using the Linksys Advisor software selecting various options results in the error "Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation" - WHAT! If I don't quickly close the error box and close the option my computer starts to do all sorts of strange things and I have to switch it off as it wont shut down. Because of this I have had to uninstall the Linksys Advisor software.
    Anybody any ideas.

    Hi,
ipconfig shows the gateway as 192.168.0.1
My ISP is Avanti Satellete and I connect to their modem via my LAN socket. The modem is mounted outside and wirelessly transmits to a host station installed at a neighbour's house. Via equipment there it is sent through a satellite dish to Avant's server. I am (and did) supposted to get a 1Mb/s connection but at the moment their system is getting overloaded and they are in the process of updating their equipment to solve the problem. Because the system performance can be iratic it sometimes makes it difficult to know if a problem with the connection is my end or their end!
Where I live ADSL broadband is not available and and even dialup is not good.
The Linksys Advisor appliation works but some of the options (eg: change wireless security, for one) result in the error message "Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation". If I don't cancel the message, and exit the option, the computer starts to do strange things and leaves me no option but to switch off!!
Because of this I have uninstalled it.

  • Having issues with PC gaming and my Linksys AC1900 router! (What settings should I be using?)

Well I recently purchased a linksys AC1900 for a better/faster connection with my internet. Sadly, I have been having issues with online gaming. I am attempting to play a blizzard game (Diablo 3) but its not letting my connect. I did a direct wired connection and it worked just perfect. However, I dont want to play in my garage...lol. Does anyone have any ideas what settings I should be using? It lets me connect to battlenet but when my character loads into the world I get disconnected. I tried opening ports, shutting off uPnP, and various other things. Is the the router or is it me? Someone please help!

I got confused with your response. If you are still having the same challenge, make sure you have enough speed to play any online game. You may also try to reboot your PC and the router. If the result is the same, check if the firmware is up to date. You may try to manually update it on the Linksys Smart WiFi page. Here's how. Once accomplished, reset, reboot, and reconfigure the router. I hope this helps!
