AP HREAP VS WLAN HREAP
I currently have a WLAN (lets call it WIFI1) that is configured for HREAP local switching. All of my APs are running in HREAP mode as well. Is there any way to run one of these access point in local mode that users can still connect to WIFI1? I tested this and it looks like you need both the WLAN and AP running in the same mode in order for clients to connect. Is this true?
Hello Jason,
If I understand it correctly, you would like to have some of your APs in local mode so that the client traffic is tunneled back to the WLC. You can certainly accomplish this by using local AP mode.
The H-REAP local switching flag on the WLAN advanced configuration ONLY applies to APs in H-REAP mode. In other words, if you have APs in local mode, they will still service that WLAN, but traffic will be tunneled to the WLC and will use the defined controller interface that is bound to the WLAN.

Mobility between HREAP and NON HREAP does not work..
HREAP Local Switch and Auth has been enabled on SSID.
Indoor AP is in HREAP mode.
Outdoor AP does not support HREAP mode.
Client connects to indoor AP....continous PING breaks after client roams to outdoor AP. The state of the client is RUN.
Disable HREAP Local Auth and the issue goes away. Why?Without HREAP config, you will not be able to do local-auth on the AP
The design guid says roam between a HREAP and non-HREAP will not work,
Thanks

Gday All,
Trying to implement HREAP over WAN between main and remote site. The WLC4402 is on main site. There will be a secondary DHCP at the remote site. Does the switch at the remote site any preparation?
Thank You,
Shankar Pariyarhave you already configured the AP for HREAP and the native VLAN?
if you have, then you only need to make the switchport a trunk, with the correct native vlan set. you should aslo prune the VLAN that do not need to be allowed to the wireless users.
If you havn't configured the AP yet.
You can have the AP be on a trunk port, with the native VLAN set, as the AP won't be sending a tag at this point. Once the AP joins, change the mode to HREAP, set the native VLAN.

Steve

Hi to all,
I'm implementing a WLC2106 for a small Voice WLAN environment using all the Blueprint settings defined in the CCO documents ("Voice WLAN designing" and "Cisco 7921 Implemenation Guide..").
In these documents the Voice WLAN configuration examples are always setup using the WLAN as Local Authentication and Local Switching without mentioning if the use of H-REAP will be also fine!
Since on my WLC I've to setup also a Data WLAN which will use H-REAP, I would live to know if H-REAP is also working fine configured on a Voice WLANs? Or should I use it only for Data WLANs?
Tnx for the feedback
OmarHi to all,
thanks for your info...I've rechecked again and again the WLC configuration regarding the 11a radio configuration and all is fine...
The WLC OS and Phone FW are the same as you mentioned above...
I've done a Site Survey using the 7921G and two other IP phone (another 7921G and a 7925G) and all were experiencing randomly disconnections from the Wireless LAN...the 7925 had the best behaviour since it had been disconnected only a couple of times...the 7921G not...
On the Site-Survey we've seen that the 7921G had seen 2 out of 3 APs...sometimes all threes, the 7925G had seen always all 3APs...
the strange thing is that the 7921G Site-Survey has informed me that Proxy-ARP is not supported...but from WLC Release 5.0 Proxy-ARP is enabled by default and you couldn't disabled..morever the disconnections are happening less when on the phone there is an active call..
I'm start to thinking that these randomly disconnections are related to external interference...

We're looking to deploy a retail location with VoWLAN using HREAP APs that will talk back to a WiSM. This is the first store, but I'd like to design it so it will scale well in the future should more locations get similar setups down the line. I'm having trouble coming up with a solid design that I'm happy with.
For VoWLAN Cisco seems to recommend CCKM to allow for faster roams, which from what I read it looks like it is only supported in HREAP when using HREAP Groups. I started looking into HREAP Groups and it appears that there is a limit of 20 groups with 25 aps per group (Is this still the case in the 6.0.196.0 code, or has this number increased?) From a design perspective, many of these future stores may only have one or two APs and there are hundreds of store locations. So I'm having trouble coming up with a logical way to group these in HREAP Groups.
I can't create a group per store because of the limitation on number of groups, and I'm not sure if there are any negative effects of grouping together APs in different stores that clients will never be able to roam between.
I would really like to use some type of user based authentication like EAP-FAST instead of using a PSK because it would give me the ability to kill a device remotely if I needed to rather than update the key on potentially hundreds of devices in the future.
The cost of a controller is too much to justify putting one in a location with only one or two APs, but the HREAP solution doesn't seem to fit when you have a huge number of locations either.
Has anyone done any large scale deployment of HREAP/VoWLAN and what security methods have you used or how did you organize the groups and APs?Well, you could use FlexConnet like that and all should work fine, for the most part.
For VoWiFi, you need to be careful with roaming. You can only have so many AP per group. It will be important to make sure your groupings are correct so that the group can get the PMK if you are doing CCKM/802.1x on the phones.
Other than that....where are the resources going to be that the users will be accessing?
If they are up in the Distribution or Core, you will still have the traffic flowing to or through there. So you wouldn't really gain anything by using FlexConnect.

Steve

HREAP, Local Switched WLAN and DHCP Address required
Hi All,
if i have configure an HREAP AP with a local switched Wlan with "dhcp ADDRESS REQIRED", from my understanding a client will be provided with an ip address from the hreap local infrastructure. How will the controler ensure that no static ip client is able to access the network?
Any Help Welcome.
Regards, MichaelI posted about this subject on my site (see link below). Since the posting I learned that the client needs to minimumally pass a DHCP discovery packet for the controller to then allow traffic to pass to the client. This is how it "safe guards" someone putting a static address on their box ...

HREAP with guest/secured WLANs
Here is the scenario:
I have a main site with WLC. VLAN 10 is mgmnt and AP-mgr, VLAN20 is secure user, VLAN30 for guests. There is a user-SSID and guest-SSID. Guest users get their IP from DHCP on WLC. APs and secure-users get their IPs from scopes on another DHCP server.
I need to deploy APs for a branch, with a high speed routed WAN connection and no local Internet.
I have created a separate AP-group for the branch.
Can I use the same SSID's for the branch? if yes, how?
Branch APs will be configured in HREAP mode and local switching.
I like to configure secure users in branch for central-auth/local-switching. Branch guests as central-auth/central switching.
Any information that helps accomplish above scenario will be appreciated.Adding to Ramin's post, ifyou have a high speed WAN link, then run the ap's in local mode and use AP Groups. If you just want the secure users to be local switched then on that ssid you would enable local switching and then when you set the ap to h-reap, you can set the native vlan which would be your management vlan the ap will be on and you will also define you ssid local vlan id. I would keep vlan 20 the same on all branches too.

Hi!
I try to configure a Cisco 5508 Wireless controller and 25 Air-lap1041 to use as VoIP and data. I read documents, manuals, etc, but the AP doesn't charge the configuration, or not conect with the Wireless Controller, why? No Radius server present, only WPA security.howto, please...
I try to put a static ip in the LAP, with lwapp or capwap command, (LWAPP/CAPWAP ap ip address direccion mascara) and the AP returns "You should configure Domain and Name Server from controller CLI/GUI." and i can't change the name of the AP (Command is disabled).

Hola:
I buy a gigabit switch. I connect the service-port to gigabit switch, and laptop to gigabit switch. I used 192.168.1.x ip address (192.168.1.157 to service-port and 192.168.1.233 to wired port on laptop, well, the laptop has two ip adress, 192.168.1.233 and 209.165.200.2, and the laptop works ok. Ping to 209.165.200.230 -ip address of management interface- and ping to 209.165.200.203 -ip address for AP, is assigned by DHCP of WLC. And i connect the ap to gigabit switch, and the wlc assigns well an ip direction.
I post the run-config and sysinfo log. The gigabit switch is tp-link model tl-sg1005d, no configuration.
Before the logs, I see this message from AP:
*Apr 19 23:10:20.211: %CAPWAP-3-ERRORLOG: This AP is not supported in controller
version 6.0.199.4 ---->What's mean that? Is it compatible the ap with the WLC? ¿Es compatible el AP con el WLC?
Hola:
He comprado un switch gigabit.
*Apr 19 23:10:20.211: %CAPWAP-3-ERRORLOG: This AP is not supported in controller
version 6.0.199.4 ---->What's mean that? Is it compatible the ap with the WLC? ¿Es compatible el AP con el WLC?

Creating "guest" VLAN on WLC 4400, created interface not selectable
Presently have an internal network WLAN (HREAP) setup and running. I'm trying to create a guest Internet-only WLAN referencing this link http://www.cisco.rw/en/US/tech/tk722/tk809/technologies_configuration_example09186a008070ba8f.shtml
Created dynamic interface "corp-26" and verified it was enabled. When I create the Internet-only WLAN... under Interface Name, only "management" appears in the drop down list; "corp-26" doesn't appear.
How do I assign "corp-26" to my Internet-only WLAN?The management & ap-management are for the APs themselves. You will want a seperate vlan/wlan/subnet for your guest ssids altogether.
You can provide dhcp from the controller or from a dedicated server.
if you select override for dhcp under the wlan settings, provide a dhcp server address, otherwise add the dhcp server entries under the interface settings.
What is really cool is that 1.1.1.1 appears as the dhcp server (unless you changed it on the controller to something else.) It has caused some confusion at times -
Need to disable AP mode multicast in 1231 series access point
Hi
I have one controller 2504 and some 1200 series access points.I am using 3 SSID .I want to use two ssid in HREAP mode but HREAP mode is not showinh in access point because multicast is enabled on AP mode. Please see the below picture
I have disabled the multicast globally from CLI.
config network multicast global disabled
Please help me in disabling the multicast so that i can set the access point in HREAP mode.
Thanks ....Hi George
I have found a document in which it is mentioned which platform are supported..
These are the restrictions to remember while you use H-REAP.
Hybrid REAP is supported only on the 1130AG, 1140, 1240, 1250, 1260, AP801, AP 802, 1040, and AP3550 APs and on the Cisco WiSM, Cisco 5500, 4400, 2100, 2500, Flex 7500 Series Controllers, the Catalyst 3750G Integrated Wireless LAN Controller Switch, and the Controller Network Module for Integrated Services Routers.
But why it is giving an remark on controller tab that multicast is not supported with HREAP on this platform ?
Is this the limitation of cisco 2504 controller or the limitation of 1231 access point ?
Does that mean i can use my SSID in HREAP mode if i am using 1231 series access point ?
Thanks... -
Strange Debug events in the syslog
Hello everyone!
I have got Cisco WLC 2504, current version is 7.6.120.0, so I have got an virtual interface on this WLC for mobile users (SSID: MOBILE).
I have applyed ACL on this interface "ACL-BLOCK-LAN-IG-MOBILE", so this ACL blocks all traffic to LAN and permit any traffic to internet.
But sometimes I can see this events messages on my syslog server from this WLC:
WLC02: *apfMsConnTask_2: #HREAP-7-ACL_ENTRY_DONOT_EXIST: hreap.c:6044 Unable to find an ACL by name "ACL-BLOCK-LAN-IG-MOBILE".
BUT! I can see that this ACL is active by the stats count, this ACL applyed only on 1 interface, there is no another ACL at all.
What can it be?
It's not a big problem, but this messages is really strange)I haven't called TAC to confirm, but to me, it seems more like a cosmetic error. Or in Cisco's words;

Branch Office & HREAP & local Internet breakout
Hi,
I´m planning right now a local Guest Access breakout for a Branch Site which is connected over
a HREAP AP to a centraliced WLC . If I have it correctly understand then I´ve to do following:
1. Creat a Guest SSID on the centralized WLC ( 5508 ) / enable local switching for this SSID
2. Create a Guest VLAN on the Branch Site with a local Internet breakout
3. Configure a Trunk port for the HREAP AP on the Branch site ( 1 VLAN for Corportate SSID/ local switching and 1x VLAN for Guest
with local Internet breakout )
Can I use the WLC as DHCP server for the Guest SSID or should I use a local DHCP server ? I know about a feature
"central DHCP Processing " but I never used this before and it is not 100% clear if this can help me in this case.
Thanks for help.Check these docs:

HREAP not allocating correct ip address!
Hi,
Help please!
I have two sites.
Main site (local) has two Vlans: Vlan1 and Vlan2. Each has its own IP address range.
VLAN 1 is the default Vlan and is used for CORPorate traffic. IP range 10.33.4.*
VLAN 2 is for guest access to the internet IP range 10.10.10.*
I have a WLC4402 on the this site with 2 WLANs: CORP on Vlan1 and GUEST on Vlan2.
I also have..
Branch site (remote) which has 2 Vlans: Vlan1 and Vlan2. Each has its own IP address range.
VLAN 1 is the default Vlan and is used for CORPorate traffic. IP range 10.125.15.*
VLAN 2 is for guest access to the internet IP range 10.10.11.*
I have an 1141 on this site using HREAP.
Each site has its own internet pipe
My Issue is:
Locally, if you connect to CORP, you get a CORP ip address and access to CORP network. If you connect to GUEST, you get a guest ip address and guest access to the guest network. Simple so far....
Remotely, if you connect to CORP, you get a CORP ip address 10.125.15.x and access to CORP network (great). If you connect to GUEST, you get a CORP ip address 10.125.15.x and access to CORP network (not great). This is with the HREAP native vlan ID for the access point set to 2 on the controller.
If I set the native vlan ID to 1 on the controller, I can not get an IP address at all.
If I do not set the native vlan ID on the controller, I can not get an IP address at all.
What am I doing wrong?
Many thanks. At first what is the idea of the the Hreap?
On the remote side should wireless clients be getting an IP address from that network or should these be getting an IP from your local network?
Please send us the show run from the remote switch, and show cdp neig.
From the WLC show us the configuration of the AP and thef vlan assignment and the show run-config
Thanks -
We have a corporate office which we have a 5508 WLC and 2 WiSMs (v7.0.116) and WCS (v7.0.172) and rolling out remote offices which will have 2 or 3 APs (1142N). I setup the first remote office with wireless using HREAP and its working well. Configuring the WLAN for the remote office we select an interface we created with the VLAN at the remote office and now that we are preparing for the next remote office can I use the same VLAN for the second office? For example, we are using local switching for a WLAN using VLAN 6 and will need the same at the second remote office.
Thanks for any help.
Jeffif you are user FlexConnect, and are on 7.2 or better code on the WLC.
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/wireless/controller/7.2/configuration/guide/cg_flexconnect.html#wp1247954
If you are not using FlexConnect, which you said you weren't, the traffic doesn't get locally switched. it all is handeld at the WLC.

Steve

WLC 5508 - WGBs & HREAP on LAN
So, I really have two questions here. For some background information, I have a wireless network with two WLC 5508 controllers and 220 LWAPs in the same location as the controllers. All APs are currently in local mode. I run a few guest networks as well as some other client networks. One client in particular uses their network to connect mobile machines to their VLAN. The only issue is that the machines do not have wireless adapters. Instead, the manufacturer put inside the chassis, a D-Link WGB, which has an ethernet cable, you then have to plug into the ethernet port. These devices cannot seem to connect to the network. I have found, the WGBs do associate on the network, but the wired client behind it cannot pass traffic onto the VLAN. I have also tried connecting PCs with different SOHO style WGBs from different manufacturers with the same result.
After going through Cisco's documentation, I found that using 1230s in WGB mode can resolve this issue since they use IAPP to communicate the MAC table of the wired side clients they service back to the controller. I have configured a 1230, and used it as the WGB for the client machine instead of the D-Link and it does seem to work, but this would mean configuring a considerable number of 1230s to hand over to the client.
The first question would be, Is there something I am missing that I would need to do in order to allow SOHO style WGBs to forward wired side client traffic onto the network while LWAPs are in local mode? Or would the WGB NEED to support IAPP?
The second question is that, I may have found another solution to this already, but would like some input prior to committing.
This client also uses these same machines with the same WGBs inside the chassis at another location where the client operates the network themselves. They also use the same WLC model with the same version, and same APs. The only difference is that they use H-REAP mode with local switching.
I also tested this idea, and it seemed to work. With the AP in H-REAP mode, and the client's WLAN set to local switching, the machine and WGB connected with no problem.
So the question with this, would be; would there be any disadvantages in running all 220 APs at this location in H-REAP mode? What would I be losing if anything? Also, I would like to keep all other WLANs centrally switched.
I understand what the difference would be for this client's WLAN if I ran in H-REAP mode with local switching, but what would the difference be in the other guest WLANs if I set them to be centrally switched? (Is there any difference between running APs in local mode vs running APs in H-REAP with central switching?)Hey,
I read your quesiton quickly so I might miss some points, but I think you need to do some more configuraiton for your passive clients behind the WGB:
'''snip'''
Passive Clients Behind a WGB
The controller might not be able to see passive clients behind a WGB. Clients (such as cameras and programmable logic devices) do not initiate a traffic stream unless they are connected. Complete these steps in order avoid this issue:
Add a static MAC filter entry for the passive WGB device and MAC filter entry for the devices that are behind it.
Use this command in order to enable MAC filtering on the WLAN along with aaa override:config macfilter ipaddress MAC_address IP_address
Add a static entry on the WGB IOS-based device: bridge 1 addressxxxx.xxxx.xxxx forward FastEthernet0Note: In addition, increase the dot11 activity timer.
Add a static ARP entry on the L3 router:
hostname(config)#arp
arpa
'''snip'''

Also, know please that WGB is not supported with hybrid REAP (H-REAP).
Even if it worked with you sometimes, it is not supported and cisco did not design it to work with HREAP.

I am only aware about one difference between central switching HREAP and local mode; which is that any limitation applied to HREAP will be applied if it is central switching. just like our situation with WGB with HREAP.
