AP to LWAP conversion 1242AG

Hi Guys,
I know this is a repeated query but this is for my peace of mind i am raising this query.
I have an activity to convert AIR-AP1242AG-A-K9*5 to LWAP , all this AP's are in production so i have loaded the c1240-rcvk9w8-tar.124-25e.JAO5.tar image in to flash to save some time while performing turnup
Image in AP now: c1240-k9w7-mx.123-7.JA3
Do i need to still depend on Upgrade tool here?
i am thinking of issuing the command
archive download-sw /force-reload /overwrite flash:c1240-rcvk9w8-tar.124-25e.JAO5.tar
after this write erase
reload
I have the dhcp scopes updated with WLC ip.
Am i missing something here?
Any help response is much appreciated.

Preparing for the Upgrade
You must complete these tasks before beginning the upgrade from autonomous to lightweight mode:
1. Prepare the infrastructure so that the upgraded lightweight access point discovers a controller.
2. The autonomous access points must be running Cisco IOS Release 12.3(7)JA or later to perform the lightweight mode conversion. If necessary, upgrade the access point to Cisco IOS Release 12.3(7)JA or later. For C3201WMIC, upgrade to 12.3(8)JK or later.
3. Prepare the controller for the upgrade process.
4. Download the Autonomous to Lightweight Mode Upgrade Tool and the upgrade image file from Cisco.com (see the "Obtaining the Upgrade Tool and Upgrade Image" section).

  • Wireless lightweight Conversion AIR SAP 1602

Hi, we have serveral AIR-SAP1602I-E-K9 access points which are currently working in standalone mode, we now have a 2504 Wireless LAN controller so is it possible to convert the AIR-SAP1602I-E-K9  to lightweight mode?

Yes you can. Make sure you have atleast 7.4.100.0 version on WLC to support 1602 AP.
    1. For the LWAP conversion, use the recovery image. First download the rcvk9w8 software from this link.
    2. Next you copy the IOS from your TFTP server to your AP.
    3. The command, must be entered on the AP, is:  archive download-sw /over tftp:///<image name>
    check these procedure:

  • AP802-BOOT-M bootloader mode and trying to get a new image on there

Ok. Dont ask me how I managed to get myself in this state. Surfice to say I was trying to upgrade an IOS image on an integrated 887 wireless router and its AP802GN access point.
The IOS to LWAP conversion did not go well and now I am in the state where I am trying to get the autonomous image back on there.
so I am faced with either this output.
*Nov 19 22:14:54.423: %SM_LICENSE-6-BOOTIMAGE_CHANGE_TO_AUTO: Boot image has been changed to autonomous image
Please use router EXEC CLI service-module wlan-ap 0 reload

Which when executed only brings me back again to the same output.
I cannot do a show flash:
    it return
So I thought maybe put it in bootloader mode and copy an image across.
So I am at the ap: prompt with no understanding as to what to do next as the AP I think has a 10.0.0.1 address and the router it is sitting in has a 192.168.0.1 address.
I also tried to load a new image when it was in the pr

I hear what your are saying but it would appear that whilst the software 7.0.235.0 which is on my 2106 WLC does support the AP802 the actual hardware of the 2106 does not.
I will raise a TAC case tomorrow with Cisco just to make sure but this excerpt from their website is pretty straight forward.
    Cisco 2100 Series Controller
The Cisco 2100 Series Wireless LAN Controllers work with Cisco lightweight access points and the Cisco Wireless Control System (WCS) to provide system-wide wireless LAN functions. Each controller controls up to 6, 12, or 25 lightweight access points for multiple-controller architectures that are typical of enterprise branch deployments. It may also be used for single controller deployments for small and medium-sized environments.
Caution Do not connect a Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) cable to the controller's console port. Doing so may damage the controller.
Note Wait at least 20 seconds before reconnecting an access point to the controller. Otherwise, the controller may fail to detect the device.
    Features Not Supported
This hardware feature is not supported on Cisco 2100 Series Controllers:
•Service port (separate out-of-band management 10/100-Mbps Ethernet interface)
•Cisco 2100 Series Controller does not support the access point AP802.

  • Converting back AP 2600 from Autonomous to LWAPP

    Hello,
I have Cisco AP 2600, Previously  i had converted it from  LWAPP mode into Autonomous-Mode.  But now I need to revert it back to LWAPP mode.
Can anyone send me the link on how to do it ?

    HI Imran,
Yes you can convert it to lightweight. Just need the lightweight recovery image.
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/wireless/access_point/conversion/lwapp/upgrade/guide/lwapnote.html
For the LWAP conversion, use the recovery image (example:  c1140-rcvk9w8-tar.124-25d.JAL.tar). after thatuse the command on the autonomous AP priviledge mode.
    AP#archive download-sw /force-reload /overwrite tftp://10.10.10.1/c1140-rcvk9w8-tar.124-25d.JA.tar

  • LWAP issues with a 5508 controller after AP upgrade

Hi All, I’m having a few problems after upgrading my AP to a LWAP and hope you can help.
I have an AIR-AP1242AG-E-K9 which had c1240-k9w8-mx.124-21a.JA loaded, I followed the link below and upgraded with Cisco’s upgrade tool to c1240-rcvk9w8-mx with no problems at all, after the upgrade I could then see the LWAP on the 4402 controller and had it working a treat.
Now the problems begin, I brought it into the office where we have 5508 controllers, plug in the LWAP into our management switch and boot it up I get an IP assigned from the DHCP server and the AP goes into discovery mode but never finds the controller.
I have logged the boot process but this does not give much away, our other 1100 series AP’s boot fine, I was hoping that somebody here could help me resolve this issue.

    Hi,
If new ap's arent on the same subnet as the controller's management interface, you've got to 'tell' them how initially find the controller.
Dns and dhcp option 43 are the most common methods:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps6366/products_tech_note09186a00808f8599.shtml#backinfo

  • Can't change LWAP association to different Controller

I have a customer with LWAPs that are associated to a specific controller. They want to change the controller it's associated to, but it keeps returning to the original controller. They've tried assigning the Primary controller via WCS/WiSM, resetting the AP to default config, then resetting the LWAP.....the LWAP still associates with original controller.
A new LWAP out of the box goes to the correct controller with no problem. So, there is still something in the previously assigned controller to an LWAP that is not being cleared. Can someone tell how we can do this?
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi Richard,
    Sorry about that :(
    You could try these two methods;
Configuring Static Parameters to Register the Access Point to a Controller
Using the password that the controller sent to the access point, enter into EXEC mode on the access point console. When the access point is running LWAPP or a recovery IOS image, you can configure the static IP address on the access point, the IP address on the controller, the access point hostname, and the default gateway IP address by entering these commands:
    •lwapp ap ip address ip-addr subnet-mask
•lwapp ap controller ip address ip-addr
    •lwapp ap hostname ap-hostname
    •lwapp ap ip default-gateway ip-addr
The access point with a recovery IOS image uses the static controller IP address to register to the specified controller and download the current LWAPP image. After the access point successfully registers to the controller, it receives configurations from the controller. The access point static hostname and the IP address of the controller are deleted from the access point configuration file. However, the access point static IP address and the netmask and the default gateway IP address are not deleted.
When the access point is running a recovery IOS image, the commands to configure the static IP address on the access point, the IP address on the controller, the access point hostname, and the default gateway IP address are always enabled.
These commands are disabled in the following cases:
•When the access point is running an LWAPP image.
•When the access point has an LWAPP configuration file in NVRAM.
•When the access point is in REGISTERED state with the controller.
The access point console displays the following error message if you enter any of these commands when they are disabled:
    "ERROR!!! Command is disabled."
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/wireless/access_point/conversion/lwapp/upgrade/guide/lwapnote.html#wp173579
    Using Master Controller Mode;
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/wireless/access_point/1130/installation/guide/113h_f.html
    But I think you will like the ideas here better (from Lynne, Dan and Richard);

  • 1310 Autonomus to LAP conversion

                       Hi all,
Customer of mine has 20 AP AIR-BR1310G-E-K9. No controller installed. He use them as Autonomous AP.
Right now he wants indroduce a WLC. Due to that every single AP must be converted in LAP AP.
Anyone can tell me wether this is possible or not ?
is this action free of charge ? Nedd I SMARTENT COVERAGE ?
any  Cisco documentation is more than welcome:)
    Thank in advance
    CARLO

    Hi Carlo,
If the customer is planning to use WLC then yes all the AP's has to be converted from IOS to Light Weight (LWAP) AP. This can be done freely provided you have the correct software image. You should be able to download this from the Cisco site and you wont need to have a SMARTNET as long as you can get the images from Cisco site by other means:-)
Below url will guide you with the procedure.

  • LWAPs stuck in downloading state after WLC upgrade

So I upgraded our WLC from version 4.0.155.0 to 4.0.217.0. Out of 98 LWAPs 8 didn't take the upgrade pushed out by the WLC. They seem to be stuck in a "downloading" operational status.

I have read through other conversations similar to this but have found no solution. Does anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks

Did you find a solution? I have the same problem.
Edit: Seems my AP keeps switches between 2 controllers with different software versions. However only 1 is in the DHCP option.

I have a question for the group and was curious if anyone has done this. I am looking through the docs on CCO and have gone through several books:
Controller-Based Wireless LAN Fundamentals – very good and updated 2010 publication and Deploying and Troubleshooting Cisco Wireless LAN Controllers also very good but from 2009.
I have a new install coming up over a legacy install. What I mean is we have a classic autonomous AP based setup on the campus with one vlan. We now want to deploy 5508 controllers and new N based AP. My questions are for migration approach. One school of thought is to deploy the controllers and convert all the autonomous fat APs to LWAPs then replace each LWAPs with a new N unit one or x at a time at our convenience. Then convert the removed FAT to converted LWAPs back to FAT (IOS) for another special classic non controller use.
I was curious if I can save this conversion step and deploy the controllers thus letting the users continue to use their classical FAT architecture while I add the N based APs one at a time. So, for example, I have the fat architecture now, deploy controllers, and on one floor where there is 5 fat APs swap one with an N AP. Now anyone in that N cell range will go through the controller but the other folks in the other cells can continue to authenticate and associate using the fat system in place. Can the controllers and Autonomous systems reside together? The only immediate protocol mechanics related issue here is roaming. I want to avoid any issues related to converting the FAT aps to LW aps in production(bugs, rollbacks etc that can slow things down). This way I can get the controllers and new APs in place quickly utilizing some known RF variables and slowly push the older APs out of use. Kinda like a SIN routing protocol migration flip with Admin distance flipping.
Is this possible and has anyone done this? Just curious. I am still looking though the docs. An thoughts are greatly appreciated.

This is possible. But don't expect any collaboration between WLC and IOS APs.
So roaming between lwapp aps and ios aps won't be smooth. The Lwapp aps will also consider the IOS APs as rogue unless you manually declare them friendly ...
Co-existence is not something recommended if you are peaky about those details.
If you only have data usage and a few hard-cut roaming doesn't scare you, then why not.

  • Cisco Aironet 1242AG Setup

Hi,  We have a network on an oil rig offshore using a 1242AG for general internet browsing for those staying on the rig, and it works perfectly.  Now we want to expand this and I have a couple of challanges.
    1. We would like to add multiple access points but these will all have to be cabled back to a central switch due to signals being blocked preventing one access point seeing another, so not guaranteed to be able to link wirelessly from one access point ot the next.  How is this best done, is it possible to setup all access points with the same SSID so users can easily move around and be associated with the best access point, or best to configure as individual access points?
    2. Due to having access points available in living quarters, we want to avoid people leaving laptops constantly connected and using up our expensive satellite bandwidth and impacting on the use of others.  Is it possible with the 1242AG top setup a timeout period, where any connections are automatically disconnected?
This is all quite new to me so any help or comments on the above would be much appreciated.
    Thanks.

You have two choices:  Autonomous or Controller-based.  With autonomous, in order for you to "enjoy" roaming, you'd need Cisco WLSE or Wireless LAN Services Engine plus you have to configure and manage each APs.  With controller-based you just configure the controller, convert the APs to LWAP (very easy) and off you go.  You can start investigating if it's financially sound to invest in a 4402 series wireless LAN controller.  If you deploy, say, 10 APs, look for the price of the WLC4402-25 to support up to 25 APs.

Not on the AP or WLC but RADIUS can.

  • Site Survey with an LWAP?

I need to survey a new building for wireless.  Actually it's an old nursing home.
In the old days I would setup an IOS AP as a DHCP server on a telescoping pole mounted to a cart.
Can I convert an AIR-LAP to IOS and do something similar?
How do you all do surveys for LWAPs?
    Thanks!

Yes you can convert the AP to lightweight and vice versa:

  • Converting 1242ag to and from LWAPP

is this possible, i need to convert a 1242AG Autonomous back and forth this weekend to use for a quick project for testing.  i need to do the following
take the AP into LWAPP mode (i know how to do this with the aironet utility)
take the ap from LWAPP back into a AP mode so i can use it as my access point again.
i did some quick looking and i found
    debug capwap console cli
    debug capwap client no-reload
    archive tar /xtract tftp://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/APimage.tar flash: delete /force /recursive flash:Current_LWAPPIOS reload
    does that sound right?
