AP1142 no longer joins controller (WLC55008)

This original post is edited to correct some factual errors, but the error remains and I still need help with my quaestion at the end!!
=======
Hello!
I have (and my customer) a rather "cute" problem ...  Two months ago I installed a WLC5508 with sw r7.0.116.0 and we installed 8 AP1142 as a start. Everything came up and running and we were happy....
10 days the customer calls and says that the wlc logs error messages that says there is an IP-conflict with the management-interface. The conflict source is its own ip-adress!!! He reboots the WLC but the error message keeps coming. After a short while he notices that there are No APs on the WLC...!!!...
After some discussion I suggested that he should disconnect one of the two gig-ports of the WLC (LAG was enabled and in use). He did so and rebooted the WLC for good measure ...  The IP-conflict disappeared but still no APs.....
In the DHCP-server (MS Win2003 server), in the AP-scope we also see that the "leased adresses" fills up with "BAD_IP_ADDRESS" (or the sort ...  :-/  )
The setup is like this:
- WLC5508 running r7.0.116.0
- WLC has LAG activated and is connected to two different Cat3750G that are stacked
- The management if of the WLC is on the same subnet as the AP1142s, no other hosts on this subnet
- WLC management interface on own subnet as the only host (+ def gwy...)
- APs on their own subnet, no other hosts
- When the APs gets a IP-adress it is possible to ping them from the WLC!
- All VLANs/interfaces on the WLC is tagged, ie a "pure" trunk between WLC and 3750-stack
- Option 43 configured on the AP-scope
- All APs is connected via Power-injector (PWR-INJ4)
WLC5508 => LAG => 2x Cat3750G => TRUNK => Cat2960 with 1x AP1142 => TRUNK => Cat2960 with 6x AP1142
What we have done so far:
- Made sure the port-channel on the 3750-stack was configured: port-channel load-balance src-dest-ip
- Physically disonnected on port of the WLC
- Do "shutdown"on port gig-ports on the 3750-stack and "no shut" on only the one that is still physically connected to WLC
- Do "shutdown" on all AP-ports in the 2960-switches. Clear the lease-pool of the DHCP-server, Deactivate scope, Reactivate Scope and finally "no shut" on all AP-ports
Nothing helped, still no APs on the WLC.
I the connected my PC to the consloe of an AP that was easily accessible and powercycled it. The output can be seen below, the most peculiar was the line : " *Mar  1 00:15:53.351: %CAPWAP-3-ERRORLOG: Invalid event 38 & state 2 combination"

My apologies for the rather massive amount of text.........
Questions:
1. It worked initially but after the ip-address confilct and reboot of WLC no APs associate to the WLC. Why??
2. The error message on the AP console: "*Mar  1 00:15:53.351: %CAPWAP-3-ERRORLOG: Invalid event 38 & state 2 combination" What does this mean?
3. Since the AP gets an IP-address an it is possible to ping WLC -> AP, is there some freakish ogre in the Cat2960 that eats up the CAPWAP-packets??
Anybody who has a solution?????
Best Regards
Göran Blomqvist

I have verified some facts and edited the original post, see the italics ....
- WLC on its own subnet
- APs on their own subnet
- DHCP-traffic works (to a point), AP gets ip-adress an is pingable from WLC but address-pool fills up with "BAD_ADDRESS"
- CAPWAP-traffic seems to "disappear" on the way from AP to WLC (in lack of a better phrasing)

It sounds like you are still working out IP connectivity, but I also noticed your AP is not for US regulatory domain.
Can you confirm that your WLC is ready to accept an AP with country code -E?
    Your AP model:  AIR-LAP1242AG-E-K9
    From the WLC CLI
    >show country
If you are in US, you should only have -A available.  If this AP is intended to be used the US, then you will need to acquire an AP with the correct country code, as -E would not be supported in the US -A regulatory domain and should not be used.  Perhaps this is for another location, so you may need to add the applicable regulatory domain support.
This link provides the list of the respective country codes and compatbility/etc.

  • Cisco AP1142N won't join controller

    Hi
When upgrading one of our WISM controller cards a problem occurred with some AP1142N.
The can’t join controller with 7.6.120.0, upgrading was from 7.4.121.0
When CLI into the AP I got this messages:
Reboot and tries to connect to the WISM2 with  7.6.120.0, but it fails.
Then tries to connect to another WISM2 with 7.4.121.0 and this work
But then the image on the AP is not correct (have a 7.6.120.0 image)
    Downgrading AP to 7.4.121.0 image
Reboot and are back to number 1.

With a WISM, you have by definition an etherchannel between your controller & APs.  Try setting the load balancing algorithm on the switch housing the WISM to src-dst-mac before connecting the AP.  There is/was an issue that shows itself rarely where other load balancing mechanisms interfere with an AP's initial join to a controller.  The problem declined significantly over the years, but you may be running into it.
Once the AP joins, you can reset your load balancing and you shouldn't have the problem even if the AP reboots later.  It usually impacts APs that have never joined your controller.  Don't know why.  Since this was an upgrade it may not be your problem, but it won't hurt to try.

  • Airport Express no longer joins network

Greetings, I have a cable modem internet connection; I use an older Airport Extreme (802.11n, without Time Capsule) to make a local wifi network with WPA2 Personal security, and an older Airport Express (802.11 b/g, firmware 6.3) to connect a laser printer in a different room.
All was working well until two days ago when access to the internet disappeared. I reset the modem, confirmed that the cable connection was working by plugging a laptop directly into the modem by ethernet, determining that the problem was the Airport Extreme. I discovered the 7.5.2 firmware update which I uploaded, and all seemed well.
However, the 27" iMac upstairs only connected to Airport intermittently; it appeared to have been duplicated in name, as well as only recognized the Airport Express. I've since been able to correct that problem, however, now the Airport Express no longer connects to the Airport Extreme network.
I've tried soft resets (unplugging then plugging back in) and hard resets (pressing the reset button with a paperclip until the amber light flashes, then reconfiguring the device). I've tried setting the Airport Express both just to join the network (printer sharing) as well as extend the network; I also reverted the Airport Extreme's firmware to 7.4.2 which works perfectly well. However, now after each successive attempt to reconfigure the Airport Express to join the network, Airport Utility says that the Airport Express has been successfully updated and will restart, which it never does - it simply flashes an amber light, and Airport Utility eventually times out and says that it was unable to find the Airport Express after restarting, noting that the settings have been successfully updated, but that there is a problem re-joining the wireless network/finding the device. Notably, the Airport Express no longer appears in the left hand list of wireless devices in Airport Utility.
    Help!!

    Hi pslebow,
You make it sound like there was no change, then suddenly the Airport Express 802.11g lost connection to the wireless network and you can't get it back.
What network security is your wireless network using?
From the specification sheet, "…When joining an existing wireless network, AirPort Express only supports WPA-Personal."
    AirPort Express - Technical Specifications
Please make sure your router security is set to match.
iOS and OS X: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points - Apple Support
If you have older Wi-Fi devices on your network that don't support WPA2 Personal (AES), a good second choice is WPA/WPA2 Mode (often referred to as WPA Mixed Mode). This mode will allow newer devices to use the stronger WPA2 AES encryption, while still allowing older devices to connect with older WPA TKIP-level encryption. If your Wi-Fi router doesn't support WPA/WPA2 Mode, WPA Personal (TKIP) mode is the next best choice.
    Best,
    Nubz

  • Mac Book will no longer join wireless home network

I am having ongoing problems with getting my 2.0G black Mac Book to connect to my wireless home internet and network.
For the first six weeks I had my Mac Book it connected to the network without difficulty. I have a Belkin modem/router, a PC which connects wirelessly and also an airport express on my stereo for airtunes, which was also wirelessly connected. The network was WPA Personal encrypted.
The Mac Book will connect to other wireless networks without any difficulty.
About 3 days ago my Mac Book stopped connecting to my home network - the network name is visible in the airport list but when I tried to connect by entering the WPA password it rejected the password or it returned an "error joining the airport network". The PC and airtunes were still connecting without a problem. It was just the Mac Book that would not connect.
I adjusted the network settings to remove WPA security and the Mac Book then connected easily. However I was not happy about leaving my network unencrypted or unsecured, so I attempted to secure the network again using WPA. Once again, the PC or airtunes joining the network with WPA but the Mac Book would not accept the WPA Password.
I have read as many forum posts as I could find to get all the possible troubleshooting tips on this problem. Here's what I've tried:
    1. Deleting the network from my preferred network list and deleting the password from my keychain, then adding it afresh after rebooting the router and the Mac Book
    3. Renaming the ESSID to a shorter name
    4. Downloading Airport Extreme Update 2007-002
    5. Toggling airport on and off
    6. Using the $ in front of the WPA Passkey (even though that is a fix for the WEP passwords only)
    7. Removing the battery (yes, someone said it worked for them!)
I had no success in getting the Mac Book to connect to the WPA encrypted network (even though it was doing so easily last week!). I then resigned myself to removing the WPA security so that I could at least get an unsecured internet connection on the Mac Book (I was thinking I could deal with the security by hiding the ESSID and using MAC filtering - not ideal, but perhaps the next best solution).
Tonight I removed the WPA security and now the Mac Book will not even connect to the unsecured network. My network ESSID is visible in the airport menu but when I select it - I get the "error connecting to the Airport network' message. I have tried all the usual fixes again (deleting network and passwords and keychains, rebooting router and MacBook etc) but it will not connect to my network. It will, however, connect to my neighbour's unsecured network just fine.
As far as I can deduce, the problem is with how the Mac Book sees my wireless network. The PC is connecting to the network. The Mac Book is connecting to other networks. Have I muddied the waters in my Mac Book through the various fixes I have tried? If so, how can I fix it so that it connects to my unsecured network as easily as it connects to next door's?
Forget about trying to secure the network with WPA for now, I just want to get an unsecured connection at the very least.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks for your suggestions.
I've looked into the problem a bit further and I think I can trace it to the OS X 10.4.9 updates and the 2007-002 Airport Update downloads. My difficulties accessing the WPA network began after I downloaded the most recent OS X updates. After I downloaded 2007-002 update (designed to make it EASIER to access third party wireless routers! Joke!) I wasn't even able to connect to the unsecured network.
It appears I am not alone with this problem - many others have complained of losing connectivity after downloading these updates. There is a relatively difficult and risky way to uninstall the updates but I have reservations about messing with the OS, and I fear the same problem will arise with future updates.
Because I am now so sick of mucking around trying to fix this and there doesn't seem to be a fix on the horizon, I have solved the problem by buying an airport express and ditching the belkin router. I have now re-established the network without any problems using the airport express. So much for Macs being simple and compatible - the reality is a long way behind the impressive tv advertising.

  • APs not joining controller

I upgraded a controller yesterday 5508 it went from a low code version 6.x to 6.0.196.0 then to 7.0.116.0. However although all the access points joined code 6.0.196.0 they refused to join 7.0.116.0. The aps are all 1242s.
The country codes etc were all fine so I do not understand what was going on.
    Any ideas?

Something "weird" is on the newest 7.0.X.  Here's my situation:
    1.  It doesn't happen to all new APs.  When I mean "new", I mean out from a box including APs from RMA.
    2.  I've seen this in 1240, 1250, 1140.  Haven't seen it on a 3500.
    3.  Here's how it goes ... When the AP, fresh from a box, connects to the networks, sees the WLC/WiSM and downloads the full IOS (OK so far).  After the reboot the AP in question loads the new IOS and shows up in the WLC/WiSM.  When I check CDP neighbors, NOTHING.  What the ... ?
    4.  Go to the switch and do command "sh cdp neighbor" and what do I get?  NOTHING.
    5.  Check PoE and show that it's IEEE.
For unknown reason, APs in this "trance" shuts off the CDP.  I currently have a Cisco TAC Case trying to iron out this "feature".  Doesn't appear on the 7.0.96.0 but happens to the newer one.

  • 1140 AP not joining controller

I have 3 AP's setup on my network and each port is configured the same exact way on the switches.  One AP joined the controller fine but the other two are not joning it.  They get the IP address but that is about it.  When I go and check for the statistics on the WLC it tells me that they are not joined.  Here is what the DEBUG shows:

Ok, right, thats because whenever you type ANY number it TAGs the packets with that vlan id. 0 leaves the traffic untagged.
So even if it that IP belongs to vlan 10, if the port is as native (untagged) then on the WLC side should be 0
    Thats how it was designed.

  • VM with MS SQL will not longer join domain after a reboot

I setup several VM's and a domain. Everything was working fine until I had to shut down the machine. Now only 2 out of the 3 can join the domain. The third is a VM with MS SQL. It claims to be joined to the domain, but logging on using a domain account no
longer works and the VM cannot see DS.  The IP address is still local.

    Hello,
When you said "The IP address is still local", did you means the IP address of the SQL Server VM is a static IP address of a virtual network? Or it use the dynamic IP address that assigned by default. If you had congifure a statice IP address, it will not
    change after restart.
    http://www.bhargavs.com/index.php/2014/03/13/how-to-assign-static-ip-to-azure-vm/
What error message did you received when logon with the domian account? please verify domain account is vaild and the password is not expired . What's more, you can also check the system event log, it should post more details about the issue.

*Mar  1 00:00:29.585: %CAPWAP-5-CHANGED: CAPWAP changed state to DISCOVERY

*Mar  1 00:00:29.598: %LWAPP-3-CLIENTERRORLOG: LWAPP Crypto Init: could not start PKI session

*Mar  1 00:00:29.663: %SYS-5-RELOAD: Reload requested by CAPWAP CLIENT. Reload Reason: FAILED CRYPTO INIT.
*Mar  1 00:00:29.664: %LWAPP-5-CHANGED: CAPWAP changed state to DOWNXmodem file system is available.
I found some details here: http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps6366/products_tech_note09186a00808f8599.shtml, but I'm not sure what it means that I have a 'SSC AP'. I am not local to this AP, though I do have a console connection to it-what do I need to do to get it working again? It just continually goes through this error and reboots every 30 seconds or so, so it's useless at the moment.
    Thanks!

While that did help me potentially debug the AP, it seems the AP can not/is not reaching the WLC. Debugs on the WLC show other APs talking to it, but the only signature I'm picking up on the WLC from this AP is:
    *Aug 08 20:34:36.376: 00:13:5f:fb:b4:f0 Echo Request from 10.50.0.25:44194

    And from the AP itself:

Is my only option at this point reverting back to a standalone image, then going back to a LW one?

  • 1142 AP will not join Controller through a D-Link POE Switch

    This is fun.
I'm trying to use 1142 APs with a 2504 Wireless Controller through a D-Link 48PT GBIT XSTACK SWITCH (DLI-DGS-3120-48PC/SI).  (I know.  Shame on me.  Couldn't help it.)
At any rate, the 1142 AP joins with the wireless controller ONLY when I attach it directly to the controller.  When connected directly to the controller the AP functions normally and all is well.
When I attach it through the D-Link switch, the AP flashs green several times, indicating that it can't find the controller.
I suspect that there's some setting on the D-Link switch that's preventing the AP from seeing the controller, but I have no idea what that might be.
Any suggestions would be helpful.  Thanks.

    leolahoo,
Thanks for responding.  I appreciate it very much.
I checked the management interface in the GUI on the controller (which is set to an internal IP address 10.1.1.20), but after doing that I am not sure what you mean by "the link should be untagged."
UPDATE:   I just saw on the main interface screen that the VLAN identifier for the management interface is marked as "UNTAGGED."
Also note the ping test results I sent to Ron above.
Any idea as to where to proceed from here?
    Thanks very much.

  • Reset 1510 AP not joining controller

    Hi
I have a 3750 Controller with 1510 access points. I have 1 access point that will not join. I think it was configured as a remote with a fixed IP address but I don't know what that address is, and I think that it is not the right subnet. I think I need to re-prime the AP with new settings.
Unfortunately I suspect that it because it has a set IP address it will now not try to get a DHCP address and thus I cannot prime it using that method. Is there another way to reset the IP address on these units?
    Many Thanks
    LP

    Hi Laurie,
    We do not run 1510's so I can't verify this, but I did come across this info;
    Misconfigured Access Point IP address
IP address misconfiguration can occur when you are re-addressing a segment of your mesh network and you start at the mesh access point connected to the wired network (RAP). To avoid this problem, always start the IP addressing changes from the farthest access point and work your way back to the root access point. This problem might also happen if you move equipment such as uninstalling an mesh access point and then redeploying with a different IP subnet in another physical location on the mesh network.
Another option to fix this misconfigured IP address is to physically take a controller in Layer 2 mode with a root access point to the location of the misconfigured mesh access point. Set the bridge group name for the root access point to match the misconfigured access point. Add the access point's MAC address to the controller's filter list and enable Zero Touch Configuration. When the misconfigured access point appears in the controller's Summary page, configure the access point with an IP address.
    From this doc;

    Hope this helps!
