AP1252-AG with Cat 3560 / Cat 3750

Hi All,
please advise, I am probably not the only one, but I have come to realise that 15.4W provided by switch ports on 3560/3570 catalysts is not sufficient to power up an AP1252-AG dual radio device. I have read the spec and it says that a dual radio AP requires 16.9W, but a single radio AP will consume/need 12.95W plus a little more depending on the ethernet cable length. As a test I physically removed one radio from the AP1252-AG and tried to power it up via poe port on switch. The AP powered up OK with just one radio module installed.
However the AP cannot be installed with one module removed, so my alternatives are to either power the AP with direct power supply or use the Power Injector which will provide enough power to start both radios.
I was wondering whether it is possible to have both radios installed 2.4/5.0 Ghz but have one disabled through the software, so that the AP will only effectively be running with one Radio Module (UP), but it will have two Radios installed physically.
I have tried this numerous times, when I try to use poe for the ap, it negotiates with the switch port that it need more power for the two radios, the switch can't provide it so it goes into low power mode.
I was hoping that by disabling one radio and then booting the AP it would only request enough power to feed 1 radio, the switch would be able to provide the requested amount and then the AP would work. But I cannot get this to work, Is it at all possible?

Well yes, if the clients are in range of the same AP, they will use the AP to communicate with one another. But if you have several APs, say one AP in one room and another AP in another room, then usually signal travels from wireless client 1 to AP 1 via the radio, then AP 1 forwards the packet over a cable to a switch that relays to the second AP, then the second AP relays the signal wirelessly to the second client. This system is used because usually APs would not use their radio to talk to each other, for many reasons.
In your case, if you have a controller, Aps need to talk to the controller, and the controller doesn't have any radio anyway, so you need cables to connect to your controller. If it is a 2100 controller, you can forget the switch and connect your APs to the controller.
If you have a 4400 series, you need a switch as APs cannot connect directly to 4400 controllers.

  • Cat 3750 with Voice VLAN and Dynamic VLANs

    Morning,
Has anyone had any success with configuring a Catalyst 3750 with a Voice VLAN (Cisco phones) and 802.1x dynamic VLANs?
Is a RADIUS server able to provide values to change the native vlan?
Is there a decent tech note knocking about for configuring 'dynamic VLAN assignment through MAC addresses'?
    Thanks,

Voice VLAN's don't require trunk ports to be configured (unless you are talkling about 2900XL/3500XL switches). Cisco added the ability to trunk a single 802.1q VLAN down an access port in addition to the access vlan - so in 2950 or above the only config you need is:
    interface FastEthernet0/1
    switchport
    switchport mode access
    switchport access vlan 10
    switchport voice vlan 100
This is effectively the same as:
    interface FastEthernet0/1
    switchport
    switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q
    switchport mode trunk
    switchport trunk native vlan 10
    switchport trunk allowed vlan 10,100
The only difference is the CDP message with the first config will advertise the Voice VLAN capability and the tag.
With the older 2900XL/3500XL switches you had to configure the interfaces like the second example (plus adding the command switchport voice vlan xx for CDP to inform the IP Phone of the voice vlan).
QoS is not detailed anywhere here and that obviously plays an important role with voice.
In your scenario I am not sure ACS can do what you describe as this will require 802.1x supplicants on the client PC's (I may be wrong here and I do remember someone talking about switches being able to do an 802.1x 'proxy' using the MAC address on behalf of non 802.1x capable devices). This seems to me more of a VMPS application.
Personally I would reconfigure the network each time and charge the occupants a small fee for network setup.....

Yes. In theme directory i put background.png shortcut for my wallpaper. So, when a change wallpaper, slim background change too.
    Example:
    ln -s mywallpaper.png /usr/share/slim/themes/default/background.png
So, Slim background always is my wallpaper.
So the wallpaper has to be a *.png ?
No, jpg is possible. But when you create a symbolic link, remember put the extension too. If change png to jpg, change a symbolic link extension.
But, remember if slim theme directory have background.png and background.jpg, Slim always choice .png. So, put only one this.

  • Record working times with CATS

    Hello experts,
I am a beginner and I really need your help regarding this point. we want to start recording working times in our PPM system. In our system we have the integration of our  ERP system with CATS. We can easily registrate in ERP  working time on each personnel number, on a specific cost center for cProjects, on activity type special defined for each role. We also transfer this costs with resources to controlling - so, in ERP system everything works fine.
But, when I go to PPM system - I'm lost. all that I maintained on ERP system is available on Accounting Tab in Detail Data -which is good. But, I am not able to see the confirmed work on task level, tab "Dates and work" (see screenshot attached). Do I miss some customizing? or how should I proceed in order that this field "confirmed work" to be filled with the data registrated on ERP?
    Thanks a lot!
    Best regards,
    Ruxandra P.

    Hello Cassoké,
have you enabled CATS-integration with cProjects in customizing?
    1) Customizing CATS-Integration for your project type in PPM
Checkbox "Time/Travel Expenses Rec. CATS/SRM/FIN". Setting up "Accounting Integration".
    2) Customizing CATS-Integration from CATS-profile-customizing
For your CATS Data Entry Profil you have to select the Checkbox "From Project Assignment" to get your worklist populated from cProjects (task is released, person assigned to task, etc...)
    3) Only entries with status '30' from CATSDB will be transferred to DPR_CONF_LI by the report "DPR_CATS_CPR_TRANSF"
    4) And of course, don't forget to uncheck "Test" :-) when running "DPR_CATS_CPR_TRANSF".

  • Discrepancy with cat and plist files

I'm finding some strange and unexplainable discrepancies with the cat command, and I'm hoping someone knows what's going on.
I've got two different .plist files that I'm trying to get the contents of using cat. It works perfectly with one, while the other outputs a bunch of weird characters rather than showing all the XML tags. The two files have exactly the same XML headers, are both UTF-8, etc. Why the difference with cat?
    The files in question are:
    /private/var/db/launchd.db/com.apple.launchd.peruser.501/overrides.plist
    ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.loginwindow.[UUID].plist
The former works fine, the latter does not.
    Any ideas?

plists can be stored in binary format.
I believe 'plutil' can convert them from XML to binary (& back).

I can't recollect if plistbuddy is binary aware…

  • CoS/DSCP to queue mapping in Cat 3750

    Hi..
Cat 3750 supports mapping of CoS to queue as well as mapping DSCP to queue.
WOuld like to understand which one will the switch use when actually placing packets in the queue..
    thanks
    Eng Wee

My apologies, that was not a very good explanation :-)
    Here is what really happens:
    - when a frame is received on a port, the switch maps the CoS or DSCP in the packet to a QoS label to distinguish one kind of traffic from another. If the port is set to trust CoS, the CoS value is used to generate the QoS label. If the port is set to trust DSCP, the DSCP value is used to generate the QoS label.
    - The QoS label that is generated identifies all future QoS actions to be performed on this packet.
    - when the packet is switched to the egress interface, an output queue is selected based on the QoS label. If the QoS label was based on DSCP, the DSCP-to-queue mapping is used. If the QoS label was based on CoS, the CoS-to-queue mapping is used.
Hope that helps - pls rate the post if it does.

  • Etherchannel with stacked switches on 3750

    Hi,
i have got cisco 3750 3 Nos. stacked together, below are the config. for etherchannel & the err. msg. i get.
    interface gigabit 1/0/25
    switchport mode access
    channel-group 1 mode desirable
    once if i do that, i get "creating a port-channel interface Port-channel 1
    interface gigiabit 2/0/25
    switchport mode acess
    channel-group 1 mode desirable
i get error msg. "%With PAgP enabled, all ports in the Channel should belong to the same switch Command rejected (Port-channel1, Gi2/0/25): Invalid etherchnl mode"
actually if i do that in the same switch i mean 1/0/26,command is accepting. so how to proceed, bcoz i thought i will share the load across 3 switches for etherchanneling.

You cannot use PAgP for etherchannel across seperate 3750's in a stack.
You can set the channel mode to 'on' and it will work or they must come from the same swtich in the stack.
The following is taken from the cat 3750 config guide
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/switches/ps5023/products_configuration_guide_chapter09186a00801cdea1.html#1154336
For cross-stack EtherChannel configurations, disable PAgP and LACP on all ports targeted for the EtherChannel by using the channel-group channel-group-number mode on interface configuration command. Before adding a stack member port to an existing EtherChannel, manually disable PAgP and LACP on all the ports that are members of the channel group, and then manually configure the cross-stack EtherChannel. PAgP and LACP are not supported on cross-stack EtherChannels.
If cross-stack EtherChannel is configured and the switch stack partitions, loops and forwarding misbehaviors can occur.

  • Backup Configuration for 3560 and 3750

    Hi guys,
I couldn't make any test yet, but my doubt is about to copy a configuration and paste in the switch 3560 or 3750, the encrypted enable secret  its affected in any way?

    Hi @edersonpassaura,
You mean that if you paste the "enable secret ..." from one switch to another it will be different in the last switch?
If so, the answer is no. This is because you can specify with the number "0" or "5" if you're going to paste the password as encrypted or non-encrypted. For example:
When you type the "enable secret test" in the CLI, the router will show it up as "enable secret 5 $%lL%&@" when you type the show running-config command, for example. The number "5" in the ouput means that the password is being encrypted using MD5.
If you want to paste that encrypted output into another device you cannot forget the number "5" because this is what tells the devices that the output is being pasted as encrypted. If you paste it without the "5" you have to type "$%lL%&@" to enter the device instead of just "test".
    HTH.

  • Mitel phone 802.1x with Cat 3560 and Cisco ACS5.2 problem

I am piloting an 802.1x implementation for a client who has Mitel IP Phones.  I have setup the switch and ACS based on previous experience and a windows PC can authenticate onto the network OK.  When I use a Mitel phone however, it seems to skip past the first 802.1x LCD message and goes straight to LLDP and DHCP discovery, which obviously fails.  The phone are 5224s and the controller is on the original v10 release.  I have cleared the 802.1x config on the phone and rebooting as per Mitel documentation which leads me to believe it should then prompt for a user/pass on next reboot.  It does not do this.
I known the ACS is setup to support EAP-MD5 and I have tried all the various types of host modes including the default and Multi-Auth, Multi-Domain and none of them seem to make any difference.  I have tried with and without a PC attached to the phone as well.
A wireshark shows the EAP identity request from the switch, and I see an EAP response from the phone, although it is slightly different to the PC's response.  In the end the phone issues an EAP 4 failure message.  So something in that EAP conversation doesnt seem to work.  Does anybody have an experience of this?

A wireshark capture shows a difference in the EAP request message from a Cisco Cat 3560 (12.2.55) to the Mitel, compared to a HP Procurve to the Mitel which the Mitel responds to:

  • 802.1x RADIUS authentication problem with Cat 2950 to CiscoSecure ACS 3.3

I wondered if anyone can help or shed any light on the following problem.
I am getting an authentication error when doing a RADIUS authentication to CiscoSecure ACS 3.3 running on a Windows 2003 server, the authentication request is coming from a Catalyst 2950 switch which is doing 802.1x for Windows XP clients. This problem only happens when the XP client connects to 2950 switches, Cat 3550s and 3560s work fine.
The Cat2950 is running 12.1.20 (EA1) which is more or less the latest IOS.
The error I get from ACS 3.3 is "Invalid message authenticator in EAP request" when the 2950 tries to authenticate an XP client for 802.1x to the ACS server using RADIUS.
Doing a RADIUS and 802.1x debug on the 2950 I see a message about 'Unknown EAP type', I am using PEAP on the XP client doing EAP-MS-CHAPv2 authentication, the same XP client authenticates fine with 3550 and 3560 switches problem only affects 2950s. Can anyone confirm the 2950 supports EAP-MS-CHAPv2?
I have checked and re-checked the shared secret and it definitely matches on 2950 and ACS.
One thing I noticed in the RADIUS debug is the 2950 sends 18 bytes for attribute 79 when the RFC defines attribute 79 should be 3 bytes or less, I don't know if this is related to the problem or is correct behaviour.

Hi, I am new with 802.1x, and was hoping that someone would help with these queries:
    1. How is a certificate requested without being allowed on a network that is not authenticated with 802.1x. I had to first connect to an active network, retrieve a certificate with the proper username and password, and then physically connect to the port on the 2950 switch which was enabled to do 802.1x
    2. My config is as below:
    aaa new-model
aaa authentication dot1x default group radius
aaa authenication login default group radius
    dot1x system-auth-control
    interface f0/1
    switchport mode access
    dot1x port-control auto
    end
I able to login using the radius server, so radius is working (on ports other than f1/0). However when connecting to f1/0, the port on the 2950 remains blocked.
    3. The certificate is issued by the ca server, is viewable via Internet explorer, and is issued to the correct username which is on the active directory.
I even tried using local authenication with 802.1x, this did not work
    4. If I have a certificate, will this automatically give me access to the 802.1x port?
    5. I have windows 2000, and authenication is set to 'Smart Card or other certificate.
    Am I missing anything?
Any advise will be greatly appreciated
    Chris

    This is getting repetitive...
    awk '/^charging state/{ print $NF }' /proc/acpi/battery/BAT1/state
    sed -n '/^charging state/s/.*:\(.*\)/\1/p' /proc/acpi/battery/BAT1/state
while IFS=':' read label val; do
    [[ $label == charging state ]] && { echo $val; exit; }
    done < /proc/acpi/battery/BAT1/state
There's many ways to do these things. I advise you to learn a little on your own as it will make your life in linux much easier and more productive.

  • Connect my iMac G5 to my iBook with CAT 5

I am trying to connect my iMac G5 to my iBook in another room.
I have run CAT 5 cable through the attic to the other room. When I make the connection there (about 40 feet) it works fine. But when I add about 15 feet more of cable, it fails. I have tried 3 different pieces of cable (all from the same spool) and none work. I do not have any of the cable that is working left to test. Can 2 different manufacturers of CAT 5 cable be incompatible? Have also used a volt meter to check continuity.
Can the extra 15 feet be creating the problem? I seem to remember a few years back in OS 9 there was a setting to change for longer cable runs. I can’t find settings to change for for OS X 10.4.3. Is this even necessary?
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Have a look at some of the posts in this thread HERE for a discussion of similar problems with runs over about 40 feet, Classic Guy.
It may be that you are losing some current through resistance in any connectors. Another possibility may be that there is some local interference source in the vicinity of the junction perhaps? Any chance one cable is Cat5 and the other is Cat5E (though I'm not sure this would matter - some people recommend using Cat6 for any patch cables.)?
You might find this guide useful too.
Its not uncommon to run into problems with long runs, especially when junctions are involved as well.
