AP3 Performance with RAW files on Mac Mini

Here is a quick summary of my specs:
Aperture 3.0.3 on Mac Mini Core 2 Duo 2.0 Ghz with 4GB RAM
Aperture Library - ~ 200GB managed library
The issue: I have recently started shooting more RAW than JPEG and when I am simply previewing the files in a window, it is taking at least 1-2 seconds for the photo to load. I have always had "slowness" with some of the brushes etc. I JUST did the whole defrag thing last night in hopes of screaming performance but it didn't happen.
Anybody else finding similar issue with similar hardware?? I am tempted to get the new iMac, but will be pi$$ed if it has the same issues....
Thanks,
Erik

Late 2009 Mini, 2.6 GHz, 4GB RAM, 500 GB HD, 150 GB Managed library.
If I bring up an image and then just step through the library, it will take between 1 and 5 seconds to load the image; less for JPEG more for 100 MB TIFF (And I have lots of scanned slides.)
That is about the slowest thing I do. Brushes will take a second or two to take effect, but then are fast thereafter. I usually have Safari and Mail running at the same time. Popping up a hundred thumbs is happens about as fast as I can scroll.
Frankly, I have been amazed at the performance of this little box.
Granted, I tend to run iDefrag after every major upload of images.

  • Issues with external drive on Mac Mini / Lion

I'm using an external SATA drive in a Newer Technologies Voyager dock (which I like to call the "toaster") with a brand new Mac Mini i5 2.3G via FW800.
The drive was formatted using Disk Utility on a G4 running Tiger (10.4.11)
With the drive mounted, the Mini's performance seems to slow down, and it randomly dismounts the drive, with the usual warning, "you disconnected your drive without dismounting it first, bla bla...)
I think I remember when Leopard was new, there was a firmware issue that had to be dealt with, and when moving drives from OS 9 to X and back to 9, I lost access to the data on the drive.
I'm also aware of the partitioning scheme difference when formatting drives for use on the Intel machines.
Could either of the above have anything to do with the problem I'm having here?

I'm not an expert in this, but as far as I know, GUID only comes into play if you want to boot from it, but...... you never know, it could - here is an excerpt from Disk Utility:
If you’ll be using the disk only with Mac computers, choose GUID Partition Table.
Another thought is: how old is that drive? All hard drives fail sooner or later - have you tried to check it with Disk Utility or something like Disk Warrior?

  • Working with RAW files in PSE9:  Doable or better to use PSE12?

I have PSE 9 and will soon get a camera with RAW capability.  I notice that Adobe no longer supports PSE 9.  Am I in for trouble if I don't upgrade to PSE 12 since I don't know how to work with RAW files?  It sounds as if I will need something to convert RAW files?  Where do I get it?  Is it a big deal for a beginner with no software skills?

You can download a free DNG Converter from Adobe and then convert your RAWs to DNGs which can be used in PSE9.
You don't need PSE12, but if you want to purchase PSE 12, you get the most current features in the Raw processor (which in my opinion is a huge improvement over what is available in PSE9), and you don't need the extra step of converting to DNG.

  • Working with RAW files in iPhoto 5.0.4 and Elements 4.0.1

I take photos in RAW mode and download them to iPhoto. When I try to edit the photo in iPhoto, the picture is a tiny little file that is impossible to enlarge with any sort of clarity. Also, the word "RAW" does not appear anywhere on the iPhoto window like I read it is supposed to.
When I drag the file to Photoshop Elements, I get an editing window that has none of the tools usually associated with JPEG files. I get a separate window in which I can darken or lighten the image, that's it.
Clearly, I'm doing something wrong. No one in their right mind would ever use RAW if this is how it works.
    Any ideas?

    Hi Jack!
If you're new working with RAW files, your right, it just doesn't make sense. RAW <imho> is a bit overrated. One thing you will need to keep in mind when shooting in RAW, is you will still need to take a well exposed image. What RAW files will allow are CHANGES in all areas of the image v. JPEG which may allow you to ADJUST a few settings in the image. My only suggestion would be to kepp playing around with PSE until you get the hang of it, it is an excellent image editing software. But realize, a well exposed JPEG and RAW file are hard to tell apart...
Personally, I do not directly download RAW files through iPhoto but will create a folder and download to here, and simply drage folder to iPhoto to import (which are then 'converted' into JPEG files). This way I have the original RAW images safely located outside of iPhoto as well as in iPhoto. You should set Elements as your choice of application to edit files inside iPhoto.
    Good luck, Rick

  • Working with Raw files in Aperture

I bought a DSL are camera recently and have been shooting RAW
Naturally my library is filling up with raw files
My question is - when I want to export a very high quality image how do I get it out of Aperture and keep it as a large ihigh-quality image in raw?
The export options that I have - from dragging to the desktop to sharing as-  all end up leaving me with a JPEG image which might only be two or 3 MB. The raw file can often be 10 or 15 MB
So what is the best way to output the full image?

I have a RAW file (22 mbs),  I can see from your helpful guidance that I can go into Aperture/Preferences/Export and set the export format to (for example)  Tiff 16 bit.  When I do that the exported Tiff file is 53 mbs,  sounds like I have a got a pretty full version there with all the information store in it so no compaints.
I have another option, export as jpeg in 'original size'.  When I set that and then  'Share as email', the resulting image is 2.2 mbs.  Do you think a 2.2mb jpeg can be the full high quality image ?
My knowledge of this area, isas you can see, a bit limited. I do understand that if I was sending the image to a printer to get a high quality image, I would send him the 53 mb  Tiff file,   but is the 2.2 mb jpeg a lower resolution cut doewn version of the original  ?
    Regards
    Danny

  • Issues with RAW files from my 7D

I have Aperture 1.5.6 on my computer and the software updater says that is the current version. I shoot with a 20D and a 7D. I upload my raw files to Aperture and edit them from there and then process for a jpeg. However, every time I upload a raw file from my 7D I get the following message when I click on it to edit it: Unsupported Image format.
Any words of advice, other than just buy Aperture 3??

I have Aperture 2.X and had zero issues with RAW files from a 7D, so I think the problem is you are on 1.X. Converting to DNG first was a good suggestion if you don't want to purchase 3.X. Yet another reason to hate proprietary raw image file formats.......

  • Browsing directory with RAW files

Is there any way to browse directory with RAW files? I can use dcraw, ufraw or rawstudio to work on single file, but how to find the file I want in directory with more than 100 RAWs?

I use rawtherapee for most of my photo editing needs.  (Not that I have an especially high skill level.)  It provides, among other things, a browser interface for moving through your files.  It looks like AUR still has version 2.3 -- I suggest the beta instead, which is available for x86_64 or x86 right from www.rawtherapee.com -- IME it's been very stable, and it contains many, many bugfixes and interface/workflow improvements over the current "release" version.
I haven't broadly sampled a bunch of different apps, but I've been very happy with it.
No installation is required, just extract to the directory of your choice and execute "rt" to run it.
To get it working on Arch, I did have to do this step first, as noted in the comments in AUR:
As root run "gtk-update-icon-cache -f /usr/share/icons/THEME" for the Icon-THEME you are using and rawtherapee starts nicely.
If you try running it without first doing that, and it fails to start up, check to see whether you need to kill the "rt" process before trying again.
I've been using it since 2.3 was first released (IIRC) and have used it under Ubuntu and openSUSE successfully, in addition to Arch, both x86 and x86_64.

  • Sharpening issues with RAW files

    Hi,
I have downloaded lightroom 5 as a one month trial and have been playing with the program. I am not an experienced user and are wondering if I am doing something wrong, have wrong settings applied or if it is the known sharpening bug that messes with my photos. I know that sharpening and noise reduction includes a bug that does not let you export pictures 1/3 of original size with sharpening/noise intact. However, in my case, this also happens with RAW files. I do not crop or change size/resolution to any of the photos, but the sharpening is still not working. Photos look great in develop mode, but when I click on library mode to export them, all sharpening disappears!
Is this the same bug previously reportered "only for pictures 1/3 of original size", or do I have some strange settings applied?
I was loving lightroom 5 up until I noticed this, and now I am reluctant to buy the product...
I'd be greatful if anyone has any input on this!
    Thanks in advance
