Apack sounds fine - Simulator/burned DVD definite audio pumping

Can't understand why after many days research/testing/fiddling I cannot seem to get the AC3 audio to play cleanly in DVD SP 2 simulator or when burnt to DVD...the FCP 4.5 audio is set between -12 and -6 (peaks), export as aiff files, compress in Apack at 192 kbs, stereo, -31 dialnorm (return entered), sounds great/fine when played back in Apack...import into DVD SP 2 and there is definite gain pumping or whatever one calls it throughout some tracks. Host will be speaking, at certain points, the volume will rise up, then the level will dip down for a second or two, then rise back up a bit even increasing the background hiss just a bit, then remain constant for a while, then rise up/down again...at least this always happens in the same places.
Wonder why only in DVD SP/burned DVD does this happen, and how does one overcome this? Very annoying.
Thanks much

Just to be sure - are you hearing this in DVD Player or on a set top player?
If you look in the DVD Player preferences, have you got the disable dolby dynamic range compression checked or unchecked?
If unchecked, this can give you the same effect as you describe... so try checking it and playing the disc again.

  • No sound when playing burned DVD with Windows Media Player

    Hello!
I made a 10 minute movie which I burned , tested and delivered today.
But it turns out that when playing the DVD with WMP, there is no sound.
I had tested the movie playing it with powerDVD, and it worked as it should. When playing it with a normal DVD player and TV it works allright.
But I had not tested it with WMP. And sure enough, when playing it with WMP there is no sound!
The ones who will show the DVD will do it from a computer to a video projector, and maybe they don't have a "proper" DVD program installed. But I heard that there was sound when playing with "VLC" which is a relief.
But I feel the need to get to the bottom of why there is no sound with WMP? Any clues?

In NTSC-land, one has but two choices: PCM/WAV or DD AC3, which is a particular "flavor" of MPEG. In PAL-land, one does have the option of MPEG (not DD AC3) as an option, but that seems to be falling out of favor.
When MS was re-tooling WMP, they wanted to add back the functionality of commercial (pressed/replicated) DVD's, but sought to limit any burned DVD's. Do not know what the mindset is now, so much could have changed with a few iterations of WMP. I have to admit that I just do not reach for it that often.
In the Project, or Disc, menus, one can tell En which Audio Transcoding to use. As John T, suggests, I would definitely do a test with PCM/WAV, and X my fingers.
If your client(s) is/are set on WMP as the player, there is hopefully a scheme that you can get to work. Also, remember that some older versions of WMP might not play the DVD at all, unless one finds the right plug-in, that basically hacked the intended setup in those older versions. Just like when delivering to a client, and not knowing their systems' calibration, or setup, trying to cover every base in a particular player software might involve a lot of work, and prayer.
    Good luck,

  • No Sound after updating IDT High Definition Audio Codec on my HP Pavilion dv6-6154tx laptop

I recently ran Advanced Driver Update to check and updated my audio driver (IDT High Definition Audio Codec) on my Windows 7 laptop. However, after the update, every time I boot up the computer, there is no audio output. I checked the volume control options and they are all fine, showing "all devices are playing sound". But there is no sound. Even the 'test sound' option does not play any audio, although the computer says that it is working fine. I read some posts on this forum and came across an answer - to uninstall the current driver from Device Manager, and manually install IDT HD Audio Driver for Windows. This works and I am able to get back the sound. However, I have to do this every time I start my computer after shutting it down, and this is proving cumbersome. Can somebody please help me with this and suggest a solution? Thanks.

  • Burned DVD loses audio near the end.

I am running IMovie 11, IDVD 7.12 on an IMac 2.7 Ghz i5 OS 10.8.2. I worked for about two months creating an IMovie that covers my family's entire seventeen day trip to Greece and Istanbul. It has a lot of title slides that explain in detail what we saw. I purchased copious amounts of Greek and Turkish music and appropriate sound effects. The Movie is about 150 minutes long. I previewed I Movie and it worked great. I transferred to IDVD by using share IDVD. I chose Professional Quality  and wide screen, NTSC and Dual layer disc. The DVD preview worked great, however after burning the disc there were two problems. First, the intro theme with drop zones and scene selections failed to appear. I suspect that was because there was something on the initial menu tile in the map. I suspect that created an autoplay but won't know until I burn another copy. Does that make sense to you?
Second, at about the 130th minute all of the audio was muted. Pictures and video footage were there also all of the title slides but no audio. I called Apple Support and since I am still qualified under Apple Care they agreed to help. First attempt was to delete the previous encoding and re-burn. that took three hours but the disc had the same problems. (At that time, neither myself not the apple tech thought about the autoplay feature, as I was most concerened about the audio problem.) After that disc failed again I called Apple Support again. This time we cleared out the autoplay function, trashed the two preference files for IDVD in the preferences folder and shutdown the computer. I started it back up by zapping the parameter ram. Option, Command, P and R buttons on start-up. I am currently re-encoding and reburning another dual layer disc. If this doesn't work, could the problem be the size of the project? Is there any way that I can take my IMovie project and split it into two sections of about an hour and fifteen minutes each then burn them through IDVD to two different discs? If this would work please tell me how to make a copy of my IMovie project and how I can split it in two. Also any other ideas anyone has would be greatly appreciated. TIA

    Hi
Can it be so that You use DL-DVDs ? They can be problematic - I only use SL-DVDs
    Else
    No audio on DVD disc.
    Most common origin.
    1. Imported audio from iTunes.
    • In iTunes copy out as an Audio-CD .aiff (Same as played on standard Stereo CD - no .mp3)
    • Use this in Your movie project
    2. Low - Free Space on Start-up/Boot/Internal/Mac OS Hard disk makes it hard for iMovie to work as intended.
Down to 1.3 GB and it doesn’t work - especially audio don’t migrate over to Media Browser (iM’08 & 09)
    3. Material in iMovie’08 & 09 - Shared to Media Browser and here selected as MEDIUM (or ev. as Large)
large.m4v. It silenced out this project in iDVD. By making a slight alteration - provoking it to ask for a new Share/Publish to Media Browser and here selecting 640x480 - and audio was back when a new iDVD project was created including this movie.
    Minuscular - - 176x144
    Mobile - - - - - 480x360
    Medium - - - - 640x480
    Large - - - - - - 720x540    960x540
    HD - - - - - - - - 1280x720
    4. Strange audio formats like .mp3, .avi etc.
    • Change them to .aiff. Use an audio editor like Audacity (free)
    5. Main audio is set to off in System Preferences - Does this by it self - Don’t know why
    Cheque Audio-Out resp. Audio-In
    6. Ed Hanna
Had the same problem; some Googling around gave me a kludgy, but effective fix
Downgrade Perian from recent versions back to version 1.0.
That worked for me, and so far I haven't encountered any deficiencies — except it takes more advanced versions of Perian to enable QuickTime to handle subtitles in .srt format — that I have noticed.
    7. GarageBand fix.
In this set audio to 44.1 kHz (Klaus1 suggestion)
(if this don’t work try 48 kHz - me guessing)
    Before burning the DVD.
    • Do a DiskImage (File menu and down)
    • Double click on the .img file
    • Test it with Apple DVD-player
If it’s OK then make Your DVD.
Burn at x1 speed.... (or x4)
    • In iDVD 08 - or - 09
    • Burn from DiskImage with Apple’s Disk Utilities application
    • OR burn with Roxio Toast™ if You got it

  • Burned DVD loses Audio while playing

So i have tried to Burn a movie twice using both High Quality and Professional Quality performance to do it. The movie will play (theres no slide shows or pics or anything) for a while just fine, and then about 10 minutes in the sound disappears for the rest of the movie (and its two hours long!). When I play it in IDVD preview it plays just fine, same with the actual file playing in quick time, so its not my file thats messed up. I have no idea how to fix this. Any clues?

First, are you using music purchased from iTunes? If so, you should take these preliminary steps.
    1. Burn the music in question to a CD.
    2. Reimport the music as an AIFF file. iTunes>Preferences>Advanced>Importing>Import using: (drop down menu) AIFF encoder
    3. This music can now be imported into your project.
Before you burn a DVD, you should first create a disk image. In iDVD, go to File>Save as disk image. Doing so will allow you to view your project on your computer's DVD player. You will be able view your project exactly how it will play once burned to disk. That enables you to find and correct any errors before burning a disk.
    I hope this helps.

  • After burning dvd, the audio out runs the actions or speaking

after the dvd is made and i play it back on a dvd player, it is as if the audio is being heard before the actuall speaking. why is this?

They were all encoded in compressor and all are about 7.6 Mb/s. The thing is, only 2 of 14 have the issue. Granted, they are the 2 longest, but not by that much. And it is out of sync for the entire program, it doesn't gradually get out of sync. Also, opening the Video_TS folder (on the computer, not the disk) in VLC shows the same problem, so its not the player, the disk media, or even the burning process. It's somewhere in the "build" process. I will try a lower data rate for those two, but it should be fine for less than an hour of material.

  • Burned dvd plays audio but not video

I just completed the first part of a wedding video and it burned fine. I just finished the second part and it looks and plays fine in imovie and idvd preview. However when I burn it and try to play it the dvd will only play the audio. the dvd starts like it's going to be fine, but the video stalls on the first frame and the audio continues. does anyone have any suggestions. I am trying to avoid starting over, but I don't know what else to do. I tried eliminating the first clip in case it was corrupt, but that didn't help.

First thing you might do is in iDVD, use the menu option to "Delete encoded assetts" in case the previous garbage from the last project or burn is messing things up. If that doesn't work here are my standard list of things I do when I have issue or even just before I go to burn a new project...
Run Cache Out X (free download) to clear all system and application caches.
Run MacJanitor (free download) to do all the Unix Cron Maintenance scripts.
Run Disk Utility (Applications -> Utilities) and repair disk permissions on your start up drive (typically your internal drive). Also verify any other drives mounted on the system.
Run Preferential Treatment (free download) to check for corrupt/damaged application and system preference files.
    Reboot your Mac.

  • Losing sound when I burn DVDs

Until today, I was always able to use iDVD 6 to create a DVD from any supported video format I happened to have on my Mac. Now I suddenly have problems. The project appears to encode and burn correctly, but when I attempt to play the DVD, either in the Mac or on our DVD player connected to the TV, the sound drops out somewhere in the first four minutes and doesn't pick up again.
I've tried re-acquiring my video sources, I've tried two different brands/kinds of DVD disc (Verbatim DVD+RW and Philips DVD+R) and nothing seems to help.
The only other factor is that the superdrive in the Mac has rejected a couple of the DVD+RW discs I've tried, as if they're not readable - it just ***** them in, chunners for about 15 seconds, then spits them out. It doesn't do this to all the discs though.
    Any ideas?

Many thanks for your suggestions Rich ... they didn't solve the problem but it's the thought that counts.
My source files are all recordings of broadcast TV, saved off in the AVI container format - I don't know what's inside the AVI containers because I didn't set up the recordings in the first place. All I can say is, it was never a problem until 2 days ago.
I have now solved the issue, so I'm recording it here in the hope that it will save someone else some heartache in the future.
Taking the logical approach, I went back over all the things that have changed recently about my iMac setup. The only thing I could think of was the Perian prefpane which I added to my System Preferences. Perian (v1.1.1 installed) is a codec pack for Quicktime.
I uninstalled Perian and ran a Spotlight search to ensure everything associated with it was cleared out (it also has its own plist file in the user library folder). Perian has an 'uninstall' button within itself but this only deactivates the prefpane ... to completely eliminate it, I went ctrl+click on its icon in the main System Preferences window and selected the option to remove it.
With Perian completely eliminated from my system, I performed a re-boot, and then went straight to iDVD and re-created, from scratch, one of the projects that failed on me yesterday.
Lo and behold ... it worked.
To be absolutely certain, I'm going to go back and re-create a couple more projects and make disc images of them as well. If this turns out to be a false dawn, I'll post back here again. Otherwise please assume the problem is fixed and:
BE AWARE THAT PERIAN IS LIABLE TO MESS UP iDVD 6.

  • Burn DVD, get audio but black screen and no video

Hi. I'm using iDVD 7.1.1. I exported a short movie (720p, 16:9) from Final Cut Pro (export as Quicktime movie) and stuck it in my project. It looks find when I preview it but when I burn the disk (Professional Quality encoding) I get a black screen after I click through from the menu, though I can hear the audio. Please help!!
    (I'm using a MacBook Pro i7).
    Thanks

  • An investigation of times required to burn DVD during 'audio' phase.

These figures are for a 1 hour 40 minutes movie, with 3 tracks of Audio, trying to save to disk image on desktop. 80 Gig of HD free.
When iDVD appears ‘hung’ it is actually saving to a file, called ‘tempmovie.mov’, in the iDVD project, which in turn is actually a package. I used a spreadsheet to track the size over time of this file, which hit a max of 1.01 GB in my case.
    • First attempt, 3 audio tracks....
    Rendering Menu/Assets took 3 1/2 hours.
    Rendering Audio
    - Phase 1. iDVD ‘locked’ and ‘unresponsive’. Rendering the file tempmovie.mov took 42 hours using up to 80% of processor time. iMovie used 12-18%. Initial spurt of several hundred Mb of file size in an hour, then about 100 Mb in second hour, then adding to the file at a low of 10 Mb per hour, high of 15 Mb/hr.
    - Phase 2. Spinning activity wheel (burning wheel?) started back up after indeterminate time (running at night). New file called ‘CurrentAudio’ created, but not added to, no files ‘growing’. iDVD unresponsive, but not marked in the Activity Monitor as such. Menus greyed out.
Rest of audio terminated after waiting 60 hrs with iDVD using average of 13% processor time. I gave up on it, had to force-quit. iMovie was using about 8% of the processor time.
    • Second attempt...Single audio track.
Trashed old iDVD project. Opened iMovie file with Garageband; took 41 hours processing time to merge the 1 stereo track and two mono tracks to 1 stereo track. Saved audio as two stereo tracks of 192 bit AIFF in less than 10 minutes. Exported it to iTunes.
Turned off two tracks in iMovie file (top & bottom tracks), erased third (center) track and imported Garageband track to center via iTunes. Sent to iDVD.
    Rendering Menu/Assets took 3 1/2 hours
    Rendering Audio
    - Phase 1. iDVD ‘locked’ and ‘unresponsive’. Rendering tempmovie.mov took 16 1/2 hours, max. 80% processor for iDVD, max.12% for iMovie. Initial spurt of 240 Mb file size in first hour, then about 130 Mb in second, 90 in third hour, 66 in fourth, average of 45 +/- 6 Mb per hour after 4 hours. At end, 20Mb file ‘CurrentAudio’ created.
    - Phase 2. 14 hours at least spent with iDVD only using average of 2% of processor, iMovie using 5.5%. No spinning ‘burning’ wheel. Again, iDVD was unresponsive, but not marked in the Activity Monitor as such. I terminated the process with a force-quit.
    • Third attempt. Trashed, then re-installed iMovie & iDVD, with updates. Single audio track, erased the turned-off bottom track, as Activity Monitor had showed iDVD still opening the clips from the turned off bottom track during the second attempt.
Trashed old iDVD project. Made small edit to iMovie project. Changed destination for finished disk image to Movie folder rather than desktop.
    Rendering Menu/Assets took 3 1/2 hours
    Rendering Audio
    - Phase 1. iDVD ‘locked’ and ‘unresponsive’. Rendering tempmovie.mov took 1 hour 45 minutes. Initial spurt of 600 Mb file size in first hour, then about 570 Mb/hr for balance. max. 88% processor for iDVD, max. 3.2% for iMovie.
    - Phase 2. 11 minutes to save disk image.
    Conclusions.
Using three tracks of Audio increases the rendering time enormously (42 hours for audio).
It also pays to erase unwanted tracks in iMovie rather than just unticking them (16 hrs vers. 1.75 hrs for audio).
It takes the same amount of time to render three tracks in iDVD as it does to export them to Garageband, (and you still have to re-render in iDVD afterward).
Either iDVD doesn’t like saving to the desktop, or I had a corrupt/missing file that prevented saving the disk image. Probably the latter.

    Brian,
this year's price "Most Longanimous Person of The Year" belongs to you!! THANKS for you efforts and reports..
you've probably read Karl Petersen's reports about some mysterious "benchmark", when an iM project gets stuttering/unrespondsively due to "too many" audio clips..
    .. I'm actually producing my Xmas gifts.. 55min project = 2h encoding ... (see spec below) ...
but: I'm editing my iM projects mostly on an external harddrive; and it is a "habitual ritual" of mine, to import the final movie as QT/Full Quality file onto my internal hd, THEN fire-up iDVD => never had any trouble with audio-encoding; my videos are "solid" dv-streams ...
so, how about adding that (single dv-stream of your movie) setting to your test set-up ...?
and: why the hack 1:40h for testing?? why not ... 5min? ;-))
    happy holidays ..

  • Loss of sound after updating IDT High Definition Audio Codec.

HP Support Assistant said a new IDT HI Def Codec driver was available so I downloaded and installed 6.10.6417.0 after which I have no sound output. I am not sure what driver version was installed before the update but I have since downloaded and installed 6.10.6330.0 and rebooted but still have no sounds. The device is enabled and Windows says it is working properly (which it isn't but then it is Windoz).

    Hi,
    Try the following.
Download the IDT Audio installer on the link below and save it to your Downloads folder.
    http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp53001-53500/sp53281.exe
When done, open windows Control Panel, open Device Manager and open up Sound, Video and Game Controllers.  Right click the IDT device and select Uninstall - you should also get a prompt to remove the current driver, tick the box to allow this and then proceed with the uninstall.
When complete, shut down the notebook.
Tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to launch the Start-up Menu and then select f10 to enter the bios menu.  Press f9 to load the defaults ( this is sometimes f5, but the menu at the bottom will show the correct key ), use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter.  Press f10 to save the setting and again use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter.
Let Windows fully load - it will automatically load an audio driver, but just let this complete.  Then open your Downloads folder, right click on the IDT installer and select 'Run as Administrator' to start the installation.  When this has completed, right click the speaker icon in the Taskbar and select Playback Devices.  Left click 'Speakers and Headphones' once to highlight it and then click the Set Default button - check if you now have audio.

  • No sound Windows 7 (windows7) - High Definition Audio Device

This is to inform others how I fixed the no sound problem on my PSPADU-0EE029.  I had upgrade my Vista to Windows 7 (win7) but after the upgrade, I not longer had sound.  I first tried the toshiba tsi4win7.exe file (I not recall where on the toshiba website I found it) to update the drivers.  Most of the drivers got updated but my coexant driver failed to install.  Then I tried downloading various coexant drivers from third party sites, none worked.
The thing that did work was:
In Windows 7, I went into the Device Manager (Start button> typed "devmgmt.msc" in the search). I expanded the  Sound, video and game controllers; right clicked on the line that has a error (exclamation point) and selected Update Driver Software.  A window opened and I select "Search automatically for updated driver software".  It found one and installed it and it worked.  Now I must point out that I don't believe that this is the manufacturer's driver (I think it is a default Microsoft driver), but I now have sound and I don't really care who made the driver.  Also I must note that this is first time I have ever seen this "Update Driver Software" work, Microsoft but be doing something right.

Thank you for telling us about that. You may be interested in the following.

Really try the link and follow the directions.  This stuff works.  Jus tdo it correctly.  You have to move the stac file to the correct folder and have the installer handle the installation of the hardware.   But trust me it is extremely important to follow them step by step.  I am using these drivers and if you really need help maybe you should hook up sometime and I will just send you my plain bare installation of this Windows XP Installer.  I have a open license, and a OEM setup.  I'll share the Open license copy which will require you to produce your own key.  Don't ask me for the OEM because it's illegal and second it will require my BIOS to work.   Your not getitn my BIOS LOL!!!

  • Audio crackles through TV upon DVD burn, sounds fine on the computer

I'm trying to burn a DVD of some music videos in DVD Studio Pro. All the files were converted to Mpeg2 from the original quicktime files or h264s. Most of the songs sound fine when played on the burned DVD through a TV, but there is one where the audio clips and sounds crackly coming through the TV speakers. It doesn't sound like that on the computer though. Admittedly, the mix on the sound file is horrible, and I am pretty sure its more than just a volume issue. I have extremely limited knowledge on audio mixing though, and also don't have access to the original mix, just the audio that's already on the finished video. Is there something (novice-level difficulty) I can do to the audio export to see what's causing this problem and try to minimize it? Thanks so much.

Your audio levels should never peak above -4db.  I really aim for between -8db and -6db for videos I do for the web. But if it is going to play on the TV, the peaks should never go above -12db...that's actually a network standard.  Audio that peaks too high will distort.
