APC-Smart UPS not showing up

I've got an intel Xserve Dual 2.0Ghz server that was purchased and installed 2 years ago. The apple reseller that installed it included an APC SmartUPS SC1500 for power back-up. Since the unit was installed, I'm not sure that the UPS has ever registered properly with OS X Server v 10.4.11. Currently, APC Powerchute personal edition is installed, however, when the server boots up, I get a message that no UPS can be found. I called APC, and they said that Powerchute isn't compatible with the Smart UPS's. Does anyone know if this model UPS is compatible with Xserve through OS X's energy saver system pref? I'm worried that I was sold an incompatible unit.

I have this same problem... in fact I have 2 Intel Macs (iMac, Mac Pro) in the house with 2 different APC UPS units (ES 725 and RS 800), and no matter what combination of units, cables, computers I use, the UPS units refuse to be recognized by the Macs. I tried installing and uninstalling the Powerchute 1.3.4 software, but even that says it couldn't find an UPS units attached to the computers.
Is this just a coincidental case of bad wires? It's getting very frustrating.

I have been receiving email "A problem has been detected on this server" from a clients Xserve G4 via the Server Monitor application. On logging on remotely there are no issues displayed under the Server Monitor or its log. On checking the Console Logs and more specifically the "hwmond.log" I see the following...

So basically the Xserve switched from AC power to the battery power and back to AC Power within a 5 second instance.
The bizarre thing is that if I check back through the previous archived "hwmond.log" logs, the logs rotate once a week, I see the same AC power/battery powers instance every 2 weeks at exactly the same day and time. An example of this is as follow...

The Xserve G4 is connect to a APC Smart-UPS 1500 via USB.
Does anybody know what may be causing this bizarre pattern of events. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Okay found the answer in the pdf manual for the APC unit. Quote from the user manual...
Factory Default - Automatic Self-Test Every 14 days (336 hours)
User Selectable Choices - Every 7 days (168 hours), On Startup Only, No Self-Test
This function sets the inter-val at which the UPS will execute a self-test. Refer to your software manual for details.
The clients Xserve does not have APC's Powerchute software installed so I guess the Xserve/Mac OS Server's Server Monitor see's the automated test as something to report on and send out an email with no actual description of an error. Not sure what would happen if Powerchute was installed but at least I know what is going on now.

APC Smart-UPS no power

My rule has been that if the electronics (not talking about replacing batteries) are dead, it is not worth the cost of repair.
If it is a really old smart-ups, the electronics are actually quite simple. If it is one of the newer advanced controller versions, you are going to have some difficulty.

A few weeks back we had a power surge that sent a rack mount UPS offline. We could not get it back online. Replaced with a new one once it came in from order. UPS did not have a warranty on it any more. Are these worth looking in to getting repaired? Or do most people usually send the unit to the Junk pile. The batteries seem to be fine and saving for a replacement on another UPS if needed. Just wondering what direction to head in

Smart playlist not showing all playlists

Since I updated to iTunes 10.4, I have notice that many of my smart playlists are corrupted. I am using smart playlist to group ordinary playlists. But today, while I was trying to edit one, I found that all my big smart playlist that contain more than roughly 5 playlist are showing almost all the conditional playlist as empty (a big horizontal bar).
If I go to manually re-select that one that are empty, I can't find them in the combo box that pop-ups, but I can see the playlist in the left side bar of the main window of iTunes.
In the picture below, you can see the _Jazz playlist. That one is OK, but what follows is a mess. First weird thing is that the first 3 playlist shown in the list are not within their respective folder. I have made red links in the picture to point where they come from in the main window list. After that, I should found in the pop-up window the entirity of the Alternative Pop/Rock folder, but I only see one playlist. Then after that, the list display the folders / playlist as it should.
Anybody know why are the smart playlist not allowing me to select my playlists anymore? I didn't have this problem a month ago.

Make sure that the Album column is showing for the playlist, and then click the Album header to sort by the album name.
If you just want to play specific albums, you will probably find it easier to turn on the Browser (View menu -> Show Browser). Then you can select an individual album and play all it's tracks, or select an artist and see (and optionally play) all album by that artist.

[CS3 - Win] Smart Guides not showing up when Snap To Grid enabled

Has anyone else encountered this bug?

Smart Guides are turned on, but hovering over items does not show the cyan hints, snapping to anchor points / paths etc does not work. This only occurs when Snap To Grid is enabled. If you then go and turn it off, the Smart Guides start working again as expected.
Is this a known bug?

Thanks for the reply Mike. Smart Guides work perfectly for me provided Snap to Grid is turned off.
I can see there being a conflict between snapping to grid and smart guides in CS3 - which takes precedence? From a UX perspective, if these two snapping modes are mutually exclusive, there should be at the very least an alert letting you know the other mode is disabled; the menu item should be greyed out. Or if it's truly an either-or situation, then the menu needs to be revised such that both snap to grid and smart guides are within the same submenu, and only one can be selected at a time, toggle with CMD+SHIFT+OPT+U.

Smart Guides are not showing when I use Adobe Illustrator CC.
There were several posts in this forum that suggest turning of "snap to grid" and double checking the preferences that smart guides are on. I've done both and provided screenshots.
Smart Guides is very important feature to me. I need it urgently back on.

It could be a preference corruption.
You may try to:
1) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);
or:
2) Move the folder Other options (follow the link with that name) with Illy closed (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible).

Podcasts in Smart Playlist not showing up on iPhone in iOS 5

Upon first syncing my iPhone to iTunes after uploading both to iOS 5 and iTunes 10.5, I noticed that my podcasts in Smart Playlists were not there, and coincidentally, the Smart Playlists were gone in iTunes (that's a different issue altogether).
The solution I found is that you have to sync the podcast Smart Playlist from the "Podcasts" tab on iTunes. I did this with my phone plugged in, but suppose that this would also work with a wi-fi sync.
Choosing the Smart Playlists from the "Music" tab will result in empty playlists on your phone.

I'm having the exact same issue on Mac OS 10.7.2 and iOS 5. There are some other posts on Podcasts not syncing with smart playlists. I haven't found a solution yet. Super annoying. I used to have a smart playlist of audio podcasts sorted by date. Now the Smart Playlist shows up on my iPhone - but it's empty. I've tried your solution but id didn't work for me. I've unchecked all Playlists in the Music tab and checked them in the Podcast tab and I've still got empty Smart Playlists on my iPhone. Let me know if you get any more info on this. I'd also like to add that this exact problem surfaced a while back with a previous iOS update.
Here are what I see as the variables in this problem...
Music tab:
• Playsts box (my Smart Playlists of Podcasts DO NOT show up here)
• Genres box (I've tried checking and unchecking the Podcast Genre)
Podcast tab:
• Automattically including ___ episodes of ____ podcasts (I've tried checking and unchecking this)
• List of indivudual podcasts with checkboxes (I've tried checking and unchecking them)
• Include Episodes from Playlists (I've tried checking and unchecking them)

Smart albums not showing fotos

I created smart albums in fotos on osx. Smart albums are on icloud fotos but they are empty and fotos are not showing.
What can be done? Standard? Bug? Fix when?

Smart Folder not showing files

Hi guys, i'm trying to save a search on folder ~/Library/Application Support/iLifeAssetManagement/assets/sub/, but the smart folder is not showing the files even when i'm looking at those files, can any one tell me what am i doing wrong?

I have bad news for you. There appears to be a problem with the [Contains Attachments] condition in smart mailboxes. For smart mailbox purposes, Mail does’t realize a message contains attachments until you view its contents. I don’t think there is anything you can do about it other than reporting the problem here:

Smart Playlists not showing the correct songs on iPhone 4

I created a "Smart Playlist" called "100 Newest" which takes the 100 newest songs added to my music list on iTunes. It displays perfectly on iTunes on my computer but when I sync my iPhone4 to my iTunes, it syncs the regular playlists I create to my phone just fine. But the "smart playlists" added to my iPhone show up with the correct title, but when I view the playlist on my iPhone, it shows all the songs in my Library under that playlist. It will NOT show the 100 Newest songs like it shows on my playlist when viewed in iTunes on my iMac. Grrrrrr! Does anyone know how to fix this annoying problem. It's one problem after another I'm dealing with in terms of these playlists to appear and play prooperly on iPhone ios 5.0.x.

Mac Mail - Can I make emails in smart mailboxes not show in my inbox?

Hi,
I am running several mail accounts on mac mail. I just set up a bunch of smart mailboxes which are working but the emails in those smart mailboxes are still showing up in my inbox? I thought the purpose if mailboxes (smart or not) was to reduce your inbox volume?
Does Lion or any other 3rd party mail apps do this? Thanks.
OK sorry forum and Apple bandwidth and Storage..ha I didn't look hard enough at the forum...found my answer which is to create regular mailbox and set up a rule.

Smart Mailboxes do not remove mail from where they are stored. They only serve to help you to organize and find spefific criteria quickly. They don't perform actions.
If you want to move messages, you could try creating mail rules to perform actions, such as moving messages. You will have to look to see if rules support the criteria you're looking for. Mail/ Account Preferences/ Rules

"Smart Playlists" not showing up in 2G nano

Hey guys
I've search through everywhere and got no luck on how to solve this problem. I don't sync my iPod to the pc, I just manually updates songs on it and I don't think that's what causing the problem.
I can see the "recently added" list under the dropdown list of nano in iTunes but when I disconnect it, the list just won't show up.
I've tried making different lists but still not showing up. I just hope that apple fixes this bug asap, it's really getting annoying and especially this is my first iPod nano.

I have the same thing. Any smartlist with some date criterea doesn't work on my 8GB nano. I'm sure both clocks are updated correctly.
I've read about this on ilounge aswell. Fix bug asap please. Unprofesional :P

Smart playlist not showing albums

I wanna make a smart playlist that shows albums > tracks instead of just tracks.
I mean that you see a list of albums, then select an album and play the tracks.
Now i get a whole list of tracks, and don't know where one albums ends and the next album starts.
Is that possible?

Make sure that the Album column is showing for the playlist, and then click the Album header to sort by the album name.
If you just want to play specific albums, you will probably find it easier to turn on the Browser (View menu -> Show Browser). Then you can select an individual album and play all it's tracks, or select an artist and see (and optionally play) all album by that artist.

IX4-300d - UPS, not showing in management, but sends messages if I connect and disconnect

Just acquired a iX4-300d, and updated to the latest firmware (4.1.104.31360).
On trying to link a UPS (a KSTAR BM-3080) - the UPS Management page just shows "Status: None Connected"
BUT - in the EVENT LOGS panes I get the following message:

and if I unplug the USB connector between the UPS and the iX4-300d - the message

The Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) has been removed.
is shown ----- Surely if it sees a UPS is connected it should show one in the UPS Managment page, of not then why does it show in the Event log console.
ALSO:
Given that the iX4-300d seems to recognise a UPS has been connected - is there some way to update/replace or even get to the code related to this UPS mmanagement section, so I can get readings from the UPS, thus enabling a 'smart shutdown' when the battery drops to say 10% remaining?
(Could it not be just a "Plug in" that allows smarter people than me to enter the UPS I/O values and make it work with a wider range of UPS devices.
Additionally - so far I havn't seen a list of "Approved UPS", just a note about some UPS systems that do not work.)

I've tested this with an ix4-300d and APC smartUPS 1500 ( which is not on the list of compatible UPS ), but it is working exactly as you wish. Somewhere around 15% battery the device will shut down.
Give it a try....
B.T.W You may test the notification functionality by unplugging ups main supply. If properly configured this event will shouw up in the log and NAS will sent notification mail ( + another mail when mains are recovered)

Why may smart playlists not show up on Apple TV?

I am using iTunes 10.3 to make smart playlists, and am telling iTunes to sync the smart playlist to an Apple TV (1st gen.). However, the smart playlist I tell iTunes to sync appears for a moment, then disappears after sync is complete. The music that appears in the smart playlist is indeed on the Apple TV, but the playlist itself isn't.
Any ideas why this may be the case, and are there any solutions to this problem using iTunes 10?

Must admit I'm a bit confused with this. I have Home Sharing etc enabled and run the ATV remote on an iPhone and an iPad. Now, when I have the MacBook on I can access the full iTunes library on that device along with ALL the playlists etc.
However, when that source is not available I can still access music (presumably the library on my phone because a lot of the stuff I can play from it is locally ripped CDs, not cloud material) BUT it only shows the Smart Playlists on my phone, not any that I have created. same with the iPad.
This brings me to another query. Obviously I can access my playlists through the regular iPhone Music app and then use AirPlay to listen through the Apple TV. So it's likely a quicker solution. What I wonder though is whether the sound quality is any different. Being somewhat naive with regard to how this stuff works (bit like beer really, I like it, but don't know how it works) I'm assuming the sound quality would be no different given that it would presumably use the same protocols etc. to stream the data.
Odd that I can't see device playlists when using the devices only??
