APC UPS Not Recognized by Mac Pro / Yosemite

Following an upgrade from Mavericks to Yosemite, the Energy Saver Preferences Panel no longer recognizes my UPS (APC Back-UPS BR 1500G).  Additionally, the apcagent client v3.14.12 says the UPS is "unknown", returning a status of "network error".  Prior to the system upgrade, it worked nominally.
I performed the following trouble-shooting steps:
1) after running About This Mac | System Report... the UPS does show up in the System Report, under Hardware | USB:  Back-UPS BR1500G FW:865.L2 .D USB FW:L2:
     - this exonerates the Mac Pro hardware as the cause of the problem
2) changed the USB port receiving the cable from the UPS.  result: no change
3) uninstalled/reinstalled agcagent.  result: no change
4) performed a port scan using Network Utility.  It did not report port 3551 on localhost as open (should it?)
5) deleted the Energy Saver preference files com.apple.PowerManagement.plist, com.apple.AutoWake.plist.  result: no change
6) unplugged and turned off UPS, waited three minutes, replugged it and booted up.  result: no change
7) unplugged USB cable for UPS from my Mac Pro, and plugged it into my PowerBook G4. result: Energy Saver preference pane properly reports the APC UPS
     - this exonerates the UPS and the USB cable as the cause of the problem
So short of doing a clean re-install of Yosemite, I am out of ideas.  I would appreciate some help!

APC's software was not installed.  That said, I uninstalled apcagent and rebooted.  Results were the same: Energy Saver doesn't detect the UPS.
An earlier thread on this topic hints that this may very well be a Yosemite software bug:  Yosemite doesn't detect my UPS
A user reports that a clean reinstall of Yosemite did not fix their problem.

  • APC UPS not recognized after 10.4.9

Installed 10.4.9 via SWUpdate. Did the fix permissions before and after
After booting my APC RS1500 UPS is not recognized - ie does not show up in the energy saver section of the prefs.
Unplugging the USB cable and reinserting will restore the presence of the UPS, and the system will make 3 loud pops over the external speakers. Annoying, as if I forget this step, the UPS will not trigger a shutdown on low battery settings.
Anyone seen this or know of a fix?
    tia

I experienced a similar problem on my PPC Mac with an APC UPS, and there was a user on another forum with an Intel Mac that had the same problem with a Belkin. Different Mac architectures, different brands UPSs so I suspect something is wrong with the update.
In my case, resetting PRAM, NVRAM, the SMU, doing a "safe boot" had no effect.
However, installing the "Combo" updater seems to a solved the problem.

  • External HDs, Digi002 suddenly not recognized by Mac Pro or G5

I have a very strange problem that I have not seen on any of the forums. Neither of my two Macs, a G5 or a newly purchased Mac Pro, recognize any of my external hard drives or Digi002, which is a controller used by Pro Tools. I have changed the ports, cables, everything. None of them will mount or be recognized by either computer. They do not show up in Disk Utilities or System Profiler.
Neither of my two Macs, a G5 or a newly purchased Mac Pro (I just purchased this today), recognize any of my external hard drives or Digi002, which is a controller used by Pro Tools. I have changed the ports, cables, everything. None of them will mount or be recognized by either computer. They do not show up in Disk Utilities or System Profiler.
All of the five external HDs I own, the external DVD burner, and Digi002 stopped mounting/being recognized on my G5. I needed to upgrade my computer anyway, so I purchased a Mac Pro. None of the above are recognized by the Mac Pro either.
I have tried FW400, FW800, and USB slots in both computers, and none of them will mount or be recognized.
Interestingly, all three of my USB drives mount in the USB ports that will not show any of my external HDs.
    _*G5 (OS10.5.8, G5 PowerMac7,2, 4G RAM):*_
    - None of the four external drives or Digi002 (FW400 connection) shows up. This does not matter whether it is USB, FW400, or FW800. Only USB drives show up.
    _*Mac Pro (OS10.6.6, MacPro1,1, 4G RAM)*_
    - None of the external drives or Digi002 (FW400 connection) shows up. This does not matter whether it is USB, FW400, or FW800. Only USB drives show up.
    - I cannot get iTunes to play through the 1/8" output.
    - Pro Tools 9.0.0 does not have input/output, and of course, does not recognize Digi002.
Thanks for any help you can give.

Your new Mac Pro, by default, boots 64-bit kernel mode; requires 64-bit drivers or you will need to switch to 32-bit mode. At least to test.
Non-system drives are best formatted with the latest OS; and use GUID rather than Apple Partition Map.
Between a new Mac, new OS and all the changes, try a very simple approach.
Also, hope that you didn't migrate / import or use Setup to bring applications over to the Mac Pro; and don't use the G5 drives until you can reformat those to GUID.

  • Sony DSR-1500a not recognized by Mac Pro 2009

My first post. Hope I'm doing this right....
I have been working with a Mac Pro 1,1 Quad (OS 10.5.6) using a Sony DSR 1500a DVCAM player/recorder with out any issue using firewire 400 and Adobe Premiere and FCS2. I have recently purchased a Mac Pro 2009 (OS 10.5.7) with FCS2 and with Avid MC 3.5.
I cannot get the DSR-1500a to be seen by the OS or FCS2. The only twist is that if I daisy chain my DSR-1500a thru my Avid DNA Mojo. I can capture into Avid Media Composer no problem. I use a FW400 (6pin) from the DSR to the Mojo and a FW400 (6pin) to FW800 cable from the Mojo to the Mac Pro.
I am starting to assume that using a FW400 (6pin) to FW800 cable does not work with the 1500a. I do not see it listed in system profiler when connect directly to the Mac Pro. I have adjusted the DSR setting to iLink and also have tried 9Pin setting but neither work. Tried more than one cable as well.
I can successfully connect my cheap Sony TRV38 via a FW400 (4pin) to FW800 cable but not the professional deck...Go Figure...
I know it's not the deck as it works with the Mac Pro 1,1 using the FW400. Is there an OS setting I am missing? Do I need to buy a FW 400 card? Please help! Thanks

As I suspected... I had to buy a 1394a firewire card to enable the communication between the Mac Pro and the Sony DSR-1500a. Apparently the DSR does not subscribe to the reverse compatibility that Apple has forced on us of going from a FW400 (6pin) to FW800 (9pin) in reverse compatibility mode. I guess Apple can take the Sony DSR-1500a off of their qualified hardware list. If I have missed something, someone please enlighten me. Until then, looks like Apple has struck again. Oh I know, I'll go out and buy a $1000 capture card. Wow! I thought I was getting a well engineered product, instead I got a money pit! Forcing a Mini Display Port down our throats, NO firewire 400 ports, 8 slots of ram on tri-channel memory...Who's the engineer that came up with that one? Screeeaaammm!!!
OK I feel better now... Who do I make the check out to? %#@^

  • How much UPS power for a Mac Pro?

I think if I buy a Mac Pro I'll need up grade my UPS. The electrical requirements don't specify the supply power, so I'm not sure how big my UPS should be. I want to purchase the smallest UPS possible to give me a few minutes of protection, but I don't want to buy a 100-pound monster if I don't have to.
I know that the actual power drawn depends on the specific configuration, so a Mac with four video cards will use more than the base model. I'm just hunting for an estimate.
I plan to get a 2.66GHz with a couple of hard drives and the base 7300 video card.
    Thanks.

My personal Pro level favourites are the APC BACK-UPS RS 800VA, 1000VA and 1500VA models…
    http://www.apc.com/products/family/index.cfm?id=23
The 800VA model is especially efficient and probably more suited to what you're after. The 1000VA model isn't the smallest UPS I've seen so be sure to clearly check the dimensions.
Remember that your UPS will be supplying power to not only uour Mac Pro but your display and other peripherals as well so stepping up a bit is well worth it.

  • IMessage and FaceTime not working on Mac Pro and message stating to contact Support came on

iMessage and FaceTime not working on Mac Pro and a message stating to contact Support came on with a verification code.  It was working on 8/29 but stopped on 8/30.  When I called support to even speak with anyone they wanted $19.  I don't want to pay $19 for an Apple problem.  I cleared my key chain, also reset my apple ID password but still not working.  Works fine on my iPhone.

There is no official public documentation of that error message as far as I know, but according to reports, it can mean (at least sometimes) that the same Apple ID is being used with the iTunes Store or one of the other Apple content stores, and the payment method is invalid. Sign in to the store and review your account. You do not, of course, have to provide any billing information to set up an account to use only with iMessage, as it's a free service.
Otherwise, do what the error message tells you to do. According to reports, you won't be charged for the call if you select "Apple ID" as the product you need support for, and cite the customer code in the alert as the "validation code" to the support representative.

  • USB superdrive not working with Mac Pro

Is there a trick to getting a USB Superdrive working with a Macpro?
The drive in the Macpro no longer ejects and have tried connecting the USB drive to both the front and back ports - does it not work with Mac Pros?
Any pointers in the right direction would be much appreciated.

I had a problem my superdrive. It would play dvd's and cd's that were already burnt but would not burn blank DVDs or CDs- in the recent past it had no problems burning. In addition, the Finder would not display the superdrive. When I put a blank disc in it would go to Disk Utilities and would not allow burning. With help from Apple I discovered the problem-- The settings in CDS & DVDs had been changed from When you insert a blank DVD/CD "Ask what to do to  to  "GO to Disk Utilities". If this sounds like your problem try changing the settings to this:
Try going to; System Preferences/ CDs & DVDs
Change these two settings to this:
When you insert a blank CD: Ask what to do
When you insert a blank DVD: Ask what to do
NOTE: If they are already set to this you probably have a different problem. If they are set to Go to Disk Utilitiy this is probably a solution.
    And
    Then go to Finder Preferences
Make sure that under "Show these items on desktop:" that the checkbox for CDs, DVDs, and iPods is checked.
Try to burn the DVD again (reload Disc- perhaps restart) and try again.
Don't know how these setting changed but they did. It worked for me.

  • HT2948 Canon HV20 not recognized by Mac Book Pro w/Retina Display

My Canon HV20 is not recognized by my MacBook Pro Retina Display using IMovie.  Mac Customer support referred me to Canon for resolution; however, the the Mac site indicates Final Cut Pro supports the HV20.
I'm willing to purchase Final Cut Pro, but will it work?  Mac customer support indicated if it is not recognized by IMovie, it probably won't be recognized by Final Cut Pro.

You need to be connecting from the camera to the computer via Firewire (iLink), not USB.
There are anecdotal reports of problems with Firewire 4 pin to Firewire 9 pin (FW400 to FW800) cable adaptors. You might try switching cables to see if you get better results -  and it appears that a dedicated cable with a 4 pin connector on one end and a 9 pin connector on the other works best.

  • UPS Causing Disturbance to Mac Pro Power Supply

I have been doing a lot of work on upgrading two Mac Pro's over the last few days. I have one attached to an APC UPS 1300VA 780W rated. Normally this Mac Pro is under my desk, so I do not here it. During the process of one of the upgrades I had the Mac Pro sitting right in front of me on my desk. As soon as I powered it up, I could hear this disturbing "hum" or "buzz" coming from the power supply of the Mac Pro. However the Mac Pro seemed to operate fine.
I decided to unplug the Mac Pro from the APC UPS and into a regular Tripp-Lite wall surege protector with no UPS. The noise was significantly reduced. Therefore my question to you is:
    1. Do you think the fact that the APC is creating the problem or introducing a different signal (maybe not true Sine Wave) than what is required by the Mac Pro?
    2. For those that have a newer Nehalem Mac Pro and they have access to the back, how would you rate the "hum"? Is it what you would expect? Now that I have it off the APC UPS, it seems more normal (it is audible, but only with my ear close to it).
    3. How well are the power supply units in the Mac Pro designed? Enough to handle immediate loss of power? What about cleaning the power coming in? Sometime the voltage drop across my AC outlet is 110V to 120 V.
    Mike

RS? XS? something other than those? The linked discussion OP had an XS and went to SMART unit. Before I bought CyberPower to replace one of my two 1500VAs (one XS and other RS) I decided to ditch APC this go around. And, glad I did. Quiet, green, stand-by mode.
The 2008 had bad inrush current, and ever since the G5 Quad with 1kw PSU people have been looking for the best UPS.
One article talked about PSU efficiency, and apparantly Apple's didn't match the 85+.
