APC UPS won't auto shutdown

I am using an Intel 2Ghz Intel Duo iMac with 10.5.2 and recently purchased an APC UPS Back-UPS ES 350.
The Energy Saver control panel recognizes this device and all seems to work well - however - no matter what I do I can't seem to get it to do an auto shutdown when I remove external power.
I have tried all combinations of settings - even tried the power chute software (then uninstalled). No luck. The thing just sails along until power is all out.
Anyone else having similar problems or know of solutions. I can't seem to find anyone with similar problems.

Hey Matt,
I have the same issue, APC Back-ups 1300 with PowerChute installed. It is recognizes and knows the UPS has swtiched to backup power but never triggers the configured auto shutdown. I've tried both the standard UPS config and the PowerChute config.
I had to get a updated version of PowerChute that "worked" with the Intel processor, made no difference.
Any luck yet?

Must be APC related because no issue using my Cyberpower UPS with Mavericks or ML.

  • UPS w/ auto-shutdown

Hey folks... I've searched the boards for this topic and cannot find... Is anyone using a UPS with their iMac utilizing the auto-shutdown software that comes with it? We don't often get power outages, but they do occasionally happen. Even a few times can't be good for the new iMac I plan to buy. Many UPSs (with shutdown software) claim to work with Mac, but I would rather hear the voice of experience from you guys. Thanks in advance! Chris
EDIT: Forgot to ask... Does it work with OS X, and does it work when your Mac is asleep? Thanks!

I will be using a UPS with my Mac Pro when it arrive, like you, in September. For my computers I use APC Back-UPS RS series UPSs…
    http://www.apc.com/products/family/index.cfm?id=23
… and for my Mac Pro I have a 1000VA model and an additional 800VA is need be. Please be aware that the 1000/1500VA models are rather large so check the dimensions carefully.

  • APC UPS and Mac OS X - Getting other machines on network to shutdown safely

I am considering purchasing the APC UPS SMT2200I. Apparently it will only work with one Mac connected via USB and you can set the connected Mac to shutdown after a period of time on UPS power (via the Energy Panel http://tinyurl.com/38zmmu3). If I go with this solution I will connect to an iMac.
Is there an (elegant) way that I can get other computers on my network to safely shutdown when the iMac shuts down due to an alert from the UPS?

    Hi,
Most APC Smart-UPSs will work with the Mac, you don't necessarily need to get such a big unit as the SMT2200I, it's probably overkill. You're probably better off going with something like a SMT1500 for your Mac. It's pretty much the biggest unit you can get without having to install a custom power line. You can set the shut down settings in the options to safely shut down your Mac if the power goes out.

  • UPS Auto-Shutdown not the same as a 'Cold' Shutdown?

    Hello folks,
I've an APC UPS system that interfaces great with my iMac. In case of power outages, I configure it to shutdown the computer automatically when it has been on UPS power for a certain amount of time.
I've never had a serious power outage before, but it happened the other day. The UPS automatically shutdown the iMac after the specified amount of time. Now I was wondering if this kind of shutdown is similar to a 'cold' shutdown and therefore harmful to my iMac? If so, what's to be done when I startup and login the next time?
    Thanks.
    Stephen.

I would be careful with the assumptions. Three seconds is an awfully fast shutdown time. If the power down had not been graceful, is is possible that the OP would only have had a few seconds added to the boot time. It sounded from the post like it did not gracefully shut down.
How do you know it works if you don't try it? Why not configure the UPS to shut down after 5 minutes, put the Mac to sleep, and pull the plug on the UPS. If it is indeed configured and working correctly you have nothing to worry about.
I have been through hundreds of UPSs in my career. They fail often. I test all of mine once a month when I vacuum out my machines.
    Luck-

  • UPS for RAID (with auto shutdown)

Has anyone used an APC UPS with an Xserve and XserveRAID? Have they managed to get the powershute software to successfully powerdown the system in a power failure? I can't find any information about this on the net, so how did you do it?
I am hoping to get a Xserve and RAID and am thinking about using the serial port to powerdown the RAID, but also get a network card for the UPS to powerdown the Xserve using APCtracker software. Anyone think there would be any problems doing it this way?
    Thanks in advance
    Puskas

    Good morning,
I am sorry i meant APC...
The software that comes with the APC unit is called APC powerchute personal edition (version 1.3.2). May be the version is different now, i got it 1 year ago. It is a software that appears in the system preferences like third party preference panel.
To answer your question, no, Xraid is not switched off. In my case, it will get power supply for about 20 mn.
When APC Powerchute shuts down Xserve, it means nobody can write on Xraid anymore. I assume (but may be i am wrong) that if Xraid is idle, a power cut is less a problem. If you find a system that switches off Xraid after Xserve, let me know it could be interesting.
    Good luck
    Pierre

  • APC UPS (uninterruptible power supply) not restarting after power restored

I just bought an APC UPS 1500VA Smart-UPS (model SUA1500) to protect:
-- iMac 20" 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 2GB memory and 500GB internal disk
-- (2) external Seagate FreeAgent Pro 750GB USB drives
-- (1) external MacGurus Burly Firewire enclosure with (4) 1TB Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 drives
    -- DSL modem
    -- Ethernet hub
-- Airport Express (b/g-model, not the new n model)
The UPS is connected to my Mac via USB cable. The UPS shows up in System Profiler as "Smart-UPS 1500 FW:601.3.D USB FW:8.1". It also appears in System Preference Energy Saver pane.
I have configured the Energy Saver preferences pane to shut down the computer when 75% of the UPS battery remains. And to restart after power failure (both on power adapter and on UPS).
So I cut the power to the UPS and the computer properly shuts down when the battery reaches 75%. A couple of minutes later, the UPS turns itself off. All good so far.
PROBLEM 1: When utility power is restored, the UPS does not restart. APC's documentation says it should. Is the Mac sending some sort of shut-down command to the UPS over the USB cable that is preventing the USB from restarting?
PROBLEM 2: After I manually start the UPS (by turning it on after utility power is restored), the Mac ignores its setting to "automatically restart after power failure." I want the machine to restart itself because it is my backup server, music server, and provides file sharing access for other computers on my home-office network.
Anyone else having trouble getting their UPS or Mac to restart after a power failure? Any thoughts? Any configuration settings I'm not getting right?
    Many thanks.

The "Restart automatically after a power failure" option only restarts if the computer was running when power failed. Since you had it shutdown before the power failed, it's not going to restart. Maybe Mac servers, or the server version of OSX, have more options.
Instead of shutting down when the UPS battery is almost dead, you could just stop all the applications that write to disk, so there won't be any disk operations in progress, then wait for the power to fail. It will then restart when the power come back. You should have something running to monitor the UPS, in case power returns, and the UPS doesn't shut off its output. In that case you should have it restart your applications.

  • 5310 Auto shutdown / start

Does 5310 have Auto shutdown or start

Well, apart from the occassional hang-ups and the restarts that follow, 5310 does not have such a feature I don't think any Nokia phone has it.

  • APC UPS Pro 1500, Single USB multiple Device

    Hello Community,
I am thinking to purchase APC UPS Pro 1500, this unit will supply power for 2 NAS and 1 Desktop. This is not a SMART UPS so it doesn't have Network Management Card slot and only has 1 USB port.
How do i configure 1 USB port to gracefully shutdown 1 Desktop and 2 NAS, is there any software that can achieve this or it is not possible?
    Thank You.

Hi, macjack. Thanks for your response.
So far, with the MP plugged directly into a wall outlet I've had no system initiated reboots or shut-downs.
I looked in the console log and there's so much stuff in there, I'm simply lost. Are there one or two keywords I should search for that might help in debugging the problem?
    Again, thanks.

  • APC UPS not recognized after 10.4.9

Installed 10.4.9 via SWUpdate. Did the fix permissions before and after
After booting my APC RS1500 UPS is not recognized - ie does not show up in the energy saver section of the prefs.
Unplugging the USB cable and reinserting will restore the presence of the UPS, and the system will make 3 loud pops over the external speakers. Annoying, as if I forget this step, the UPS will not trigger a shutdown on low battery settings.
Anyone seen this or know of a fix?
    tia

I experienced a similar problem on my PPC Mac with an APC UPS, and there was a user on another forum with an Intel Mac that had the same problem with a Belkin. Different Mac architectures, different brands UPSs so I suspect something is wrong with the update.
In my case, resetting PRAM, NVRAM, the SMU, doing a "safe boot" had no effect.
However, installing the "Combo" updater seems to a solved the problem.

  • APC UPS question

I can't seem to find an answer to this question.
At my work we are switching from local files to a single file server. The setup is a PowerMac G5 Dual 1.8 with two harddrives (one for the OS and the other for TimeMachine) with a Drobo hooked up via Firewire 800 (w/four 1TB drives) that will be holding all the files (even has a network backup every night) all running on Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard Server. The only thing the server is doing is filesharing for 6 mac users (no windows sharing), so the system isn't overly taxed on bit.
My questions is that I will be attaching a APC UPS to the system in case of brown/blackouts. I want the Mac Server to shutdown properly when it is running on battery power, but I usually leave the server logged out, because of security and know one uses it for anything. So I guess the real question is that will the Mac properly shutdown when running on UPS battery during a powerfailure even if the Mac is currently logged out?

So I guess the real question is that will the Mac properly shutdown when running on UPS battery during a powerfailure even if the Mac is currently logged out?
Yes. Servers are designed to run headless (without a monitor attached, let alone someone logged in) so as long as the UPS is correctly configured and recognized by the system, it will shut down appropriately, regardless of whether anyone is logged in or not.

  • Mythtv, auto shutdown no longer working, scheduler.cpp ?

Following a recent update the automatic shutdown of my backend is no longer working (well, at least not reliably).
I have 3 scripts set up in the relevant sections of the mythtv-setup to check if myth is ok to shut down, set the new wakeup time and perform the actual shutdown. These scripts still work alright, but the backend is not initiating the shutdown any more in some cases.
Lots of trial and error makes me think that this is somehow related to scheduler.cpp, but I am not sure if this is the case or how to fix it.
    I think I have established a pattern:
    Scenario 1:
    - Boot backend
    - do nothing else (e.g. start remote frontend or mythfrontend on the backend)
    - automatic shutdown does not work
    Scenario 2:
    - Boot backend
    - start remote frontend
    - shut down frontend
    - automatic shutdown does not work
    - restart backend service (without reboot)
    - automatic shutdown works
I also notice that in scenario 2 (when automatic shutdown works) there are a whole heap of these kind of messages right until shutdown occurs:
    2013-04-29 19:18:07.592125 N [660/738] Expire autoexpire.cpp:641 (SendDeleteMessages) - Expiring 156 MB for 1073 at 2013-04-13T11:50:20Z => Hulk

In scenario 2 (successful) I see the following in the log just before the above auto expire stuff:
Scheduler scheduler.cpp:2307 (HandleRunSchedulerStartup) - Scheduler: Seem to be woken up by USER
then a whole heap of auto expiry stuff and finally:
Scheduler scheduler.cpp:2862 (CheckShutdownServer) - CheckShutdownServer returned - OK to shutdown
2013-04-29 19:19:55.276775 N [660/735] Scheduler scheduler.cpp:2947 (ShutdownServer) - Running the command to set the next scheduled wakeup time :-

    sudo /home/laffi/scripts/MythShutdown
In scenario 1 (unsuccessfull shutdown) I also get
Scheduler scheduler.cpp:2307 (HandleRunSchedulerStartup) - Scheduler: Seem to be woken up by USER
and then autoexpiry, but then, once a frontend connects:
ProcessRequest mainserver.cpp:1385 (HandleAnnounce) - adding: frontend as a client (events: 0)
I don't get autoexpiry of files and no shutdown, both of which I believe are initiated by scheduler.cpp
I also noticed the following in the logs when auto shutdown does not work:
    2013-04-29 15:40:36.046359 I [648/848] ProcessRequest mainserver.cpp:1385 (HandleAnnounce) - adding: mythbackend as a client (events: 1)
which does not seem to appear in the logs when auto shutdown works.
Any ideas ? I have found very little (next to none) regarding scheduler.cpp when searching.

The other side of the VPN is a TMG server hosted at our main office.  I can connect to it off site, and others were connected to it remotely as well, but for some reason users at that remote site can no longer connect to the VPN.
I talked to my ISP wondering if there was something that was blocked due to the change from dhcp to static IP addresses, but they don't see anything.

  • Finder won't auto arrange by kind-

    Hi,
Since some time my Finder won't auto arrange my files by kind anymore. If I select this option, it simply doesn't do anything. I can auto arrange by name, dates, size, anything except for by kind. THis wouldn't be so much of a problem, if it weren't the only option I actually use to auto arrange…
Been trying to find a solution, but I don't find anything on the internet, and I don't seem to be able to fix it myself either.
Anyone who has experienced the same problem and knows how to fix it? Or someone who doesn't have the problem and knows how to fix this?
    Thanks in advance
    Grts
    Matthias

OK, it just works here, so I'd try this after my investigations...
First, Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, test if things work OK in Safe Mode.
Then move these files to the Desktop for now...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.recentitems.plist
    Reboot & test.
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.
