APC UPS: Xseve not rebooting after a power failure

Xserve 2.26 GHZ OS X server 10.6.4
Energy Saver-UPS connected USB to APC smart UPS set to shut down 5 min before UPS out of power.
On a power failure (lots these days in the islands!), the Xserve does not reboot upn power restore.
Any ideas?
Thanks!

Did you install software for the Less-Interruptable Power Supply (LIPS), or are you running with the integrated capabilities? (There is add-on software that can be installed used here, though the integrated LIPS support within Mac OS X Server works correctly with Mac OS X Server 10.5 and 10.6 and APC Smart-UPS devices on the Xserve boxes I deal with.)
Was the key lock engaged on the server when you set this up?
Definitely check the rack LIPS configuration settings too, as some of these LIPS boxes are seriously programmable.
The settings are visible via the pmset and ipmitool tools; [here are pmset and ipmitool examples|http://labs.hoffmanlabs.com/node/1045], as well as some information on sending email and such.

    Hi,
a defect PSU could also be the cause for both of your problems. It would explain the HDD power failure as well the changes in the BIOS (assuming your CMOS battery is empty).
    You better check this first

  • How to get Mavericks server that is connected to a UPS to restart automatically after a power outage.

This is driving me crazy. Is there anyone running Mavericks as a mission critical server on Backup Power Supplies that has a way to get the servers to restart automatically after a power outage. The UPS vendors all have software for Windows, but not Macs, and the setting in System Preferences, doesn't work with the UPS's Iv'e tried (2 different APC models (Smart and Back-UPs), one Triplite (Smart) and one CyberPower, (all claiming to be Mac compatible))

APC do apparently still do a command-line daemon (PowerChute Network Shutdown) which monitors over the network the UPS and will cleanly shutdown the Mac. For lower-end UPS devices these are typically connected via a USB cable and the built-in Apple System Preferences let you control the options - if it is a model supported. There is however a big limitation of using a USB connection which is that you can only connect a single computer to a UPS via USB and of course most companies have multiple servers.
It maybe that what is happening even if you use APC's software is the following -
    Power failure detected by UPS
    Signal sent to Mac
    Computer does a clean shutdown
    Power restored
UPS has no way to tell Mac because it is shutdown and Mac does not support 'Wake on LAN' if fully shutdown
The Mac does have an option to 'Startup automatically after a power failure'. However this might only take place if the Mac is not cleanly shutdown, it could be that if the Mac is cleanly shutdown it does not count this as a power failure. If this is correct then there is nothing that can be done as users to resolve this, the only way it could be resolved would be if Apple provided a way for a tool like APCs software to both do a clean shutdown and set a flag as this being due to a power failure so that when the Mac does detect the power being restored it triggers the Mac in to booting.
In the dim and distant past when Macs used ADB to connect keyboards and mice the ADB interface did support an external power-on signal. This does not exist for USB.
Personally I have regarded the APC software (PowerChute Network Shutdown 3.0.1) to be so badly supported and so old as to be too risky to use. It lists 10.7 and 10.8 but not 10.9 and uses Java 1.6 which itself is unsupported. There is a third-party tool you might want to look at called NUT (Network Ups Tools) see http://www.networkupstools.org
NUT is free and lets you do clever things like -
Connect a single computer via serial or USB to the UPS
Act as a 'server' over the network to other computers sharing the UPS
When power failure is detected the NUT 'server' sends a signal to the NUT 'clients' so all of them know that there is a power failure and can do their own clean shutdowns
This gets round only being able to connect a single computer via USB.

  • Canon 60D does not resume after auto power off

My Canon 60D does not resume after auto power off. It shows the empty battery icon when I press the shutter button, even the battey is fully charged. If I remove the battery and insert back it will resume to work. Any one had the same experience and know how to resolve it?

The power switch is actually a "software" switch.  It's not like a light switch in that it doesn't actually provide or deprive the camera of power... only removing the battery will deprive the camera of power.  This is why it doesn't actually just go dark when you switch off power... instead you'll usually see it perform a sensor clean cycle and then power down.  The camera is technically in a kind of "sleep" mode monitoring the switch.  If a Canon camera ever seems to lock up and ignore all input, the battery should be temporarily removed to "reboot" the camera.   There is no "setting" in a camera that can configure it to ignore buttons.   Although... if the camera is in an automatic mode, some input is deliberately ignored to make it easier to use the camera.  Put the mode dial in a "creative zone" mode (P, Tv, Av, or M) and all buttons and menus should be accessible. You might try connecting the camera via USB cable to your computer and then attempt to control the camera via the Canon EOS Utility to see if that works.  If the camera responds fine to the computer control, then likely the camera's main board and circuits are working fine and it may just be a wiring problem -- as if some cable simply isn't getting a very solid connection.  If this is a wiring issue, you are probably better off sending it in for service.

  • After a power failure while iPhoto was running, I get the message "Your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable"  and iPhoto will not open????

After a power failure while iPhoto was running, I get the message "Your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable"  and iPhoto will not open???? held down the option and the command and tried to run what was ticked off and it just sits there with a spinning wheel and does nothing, can I throw the app away and download a new one? or will it still not open?

, can I throw the app away and download a new one? or will it still not open?
You could, but the error message is indicating that your iPhoto library needs repairing.
Check, if iPhoto will run, if you launch it on a new library. Hold down the alt/option key, while you launch iPhoto. Select to create a new library from the panel that will show. Can you create a new library? If yes, try again to fix the library. Which options have you tried from the Library First Aid panel, when you launched iPhoto with the option and command key held down?
If you have not tried "Rebuild"; do that next. But be sure to make a backup of your iPhoto library, before you try this.

  • My iPhone 4 can not reboot after upgrading to iOS 6; keeps trying and cannot shut off either.

My iPhone 4 can not reboot after upgrading to iOS 6; keeps trying and cannot shut off either.

I FINALLY got it to work on BOTH iPhone 4 and iPpad 3.  Here is what I had to do:
Had to DELETE all e-mail accounts including icloud.
Did a hard reset (hold down button on top right corner and round button on bottom center)
Then once it came back on, the iPhone had ALL of the accounts still on it and it was receivng e-mail.
The iPad receive e-mail until I did the steps above 5 times.  Plus, I had to add back all of the e-mail accounts vs. on the iPhone 4 they were there when my phone came on.
Now I am receiving e-mail on both devices normally.
No clue why this happened, but Apple needs to find a fix ASAP.

  • How do I get my system to auto start-up after a power failure?

Hi, I have a Lenovo 3000 J200 desktop that I'm using as a file server. Currently I have to physically press the start button after a power failure, before the system will boot. This isn't much help if the power dips in the night or when I'm away..
Is there a setting in the BIOS or similar that I can set to automatically boot up when power is restored to the box?
    Many thanks
    Adrian

Too bad no one offered a solution.  I tried to use the "Wake on Event" to have the PC boot itself, but the only option is a one-time event.  This is an unacceptable oversight on Lenovo's part.  Missing is the option to have this a recurring event such as every day.  Others report the same frustration.  I have this H3 PC in a remote location 1200 miles away, and when AC power loss occurs, I have to travel a great distance just to push the power button.

  • 2006 Macbook won't reboot after losing power during update:

Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.

  • MacBook Pro not rebooting after security update

Hi after installing the latest security update my MacBook Pro (2yrs old) will not reboot. I have turned the mac on and off at least 10 times. I haven't been back up my latest documents. Sigh. Please help me . I'm also using the latest mavericks version.

    Try this ..
Startup your Mac while holding down the Option key. That should propmt the Startup Manager window where you can select the startup disk, v10.9, then click Restart.

  • Mac mini G4 will not reboot after Onyx upgrade

DURING UPGRADE OF ONYX INSTRUCTED TO RUN REPAIR DISK FROM MAC OSX INSTALL DISK. SYSTEM WILL NOT REBOOT. ANY SUGGESTIONS?

Have you booted from the OSX install disc yet?
With the power on, insert this disc, then force the computer to turn off by holding down the power button for 5-10 seconds.
Then restart the computer. As soon as you hear the startup chime, hold down the C key -- and keep holding it until you see the "gear" spinning on the screen.
You need a wired keyboard to do this. If you don't have one, borrow a usb PC keyboard.
Once you boot from the install disc, don't install! But instead run DiskUtility from the Utility menu at the top of the screen.
BTW if DiskUtility can't repair the hard drive, you might have better luck with DiskWarrior -- though it will cost about $100 to find out.
