Aperature 2.0 versus Photoshop Elements 6.0

I'm new to the forum and a new Mac user (Mac Pro as of 1/2008). I'm still running PSE 6.0 on a Win XP machine but planned to switch to the Mac as soon as I receive my PSE 6 for Mac from Adobe. (They swapped out my Windows version under their platform change program. I paid $5 for shipping. It is supposed to be on its way within a few days though it isn't available at retail yet, as far as I know.)
I've been using PSE on PC since V1 and primarily use it for organization and what is probably considered relatively simple editing. I shoot with a Nikon D80 and have roughly 3,000 images cataloged and tagged in PSE. I was hoping that PSE 6 for mac would be able to read that catalog so I wouldn't need to reorganize everything. We'll see.
Now I see Aperature 2.0 is out. Does anyone know if this is a viable alternative to Photoshop Elements (even though we haven't seen the Mac version of 6)? I use Final Cut Express 4 for video and would assume there'd be better integration there. As I mentioned my editing isn't over the top and it looks like Aperature 2.0 has some editing capabilities.
For instance, I just finished some basic edits on about 50 portraits I took of cast and crew for my daughter's high school musical. In PSE 6 (for PC) I removed about a thousand zits, whitened teeth, removed some lunch from between teeth, softened skin for the girls, etc. I like working with layers.
So...Since I don't need to "buy" PSE 6 for the Mac, is it worth spending $200 to buy Aperature 2.0? Obviously, I only want to reorganize my photos once and as I migrate to Mac, this is the time to switch, if at all.
Thanks.

You need both apps: PSE and AP are totally different, not comparable apps. PSE is a necessary app for the edits you describe. Aperture on a strong MacIntel is a killer app for DSLR images management and organization.
Yes Aperture is well worth the $200, but not as a replacement for PSE (although 98% of images are fully dealt with in AP without entering PSE). Once you learn Aperture your DSLR world will be very much improved. The ability to review/manage images really, really quickly is very likely to actually improve your DSLR photography.
You should have at least 4 GB RAM in your MP before running an Aperture trial (IMO MPs in general deserve 8+ GB RAM). Aperture also takes good advantage of advanced graphics cards, so after you are hooked on Aperture you will want to add an 8800GT card. Your Macbook Pro will also run Aperture decently if you max out the RAM (Apple allows one AP license to run legally on both a desktop and laptop).
IMO all DSLR photogs with adequate computer hardware should own Aperture. Working the tutorial below will demonstrate how Aperture absolutely rocks for DSLR photogs.
I strongly recommend that every DSLR photog with adequate computer hardware first spend $33 and work through the tutorial CD Apple Pro Training Series: Aperture 1.5 (Apple Pro Training) by Orlando Luna and Ben Long (Paperback - Oct 18, 2006). Note that the value is in the tutorial, not in using the book as a manual.
IMO a cursory examination of Aperture usually turns out to be mostly a waste of time, or leads to bad workflow habits or folks simply do not get it. Carefully working the tutorial is by far the best way to learn this new killer app category.
The tutorial is for v1.5, so there will be differences from v2, but IMO it is still a necessary $30 prerequisite to Aperture trial.

P.S. For now I would leave your existing images where they are. Just use AP for the trial and for all new images. Six months from now you can consider if/how you may want to import your old pix into your Aperture Library.

  • Aperture versus Photoshop Elements versus iPhoto

Please forgive my ignorance, I'm a lifelong PC user that has finally seen the light and converted to a MAC. I'm a bit confused on how I would use these three apps together. If I primarily take pictures, connect the camera to the MAC, edit/tag/organize photos, how do these apps work together and where are the files actually stored? Should I import into Iphoto first and then into Aperature, or straight into Aperture. Is there any purpose for using Photoshop Elements if I own Aperature?
    thanks in advance,

Just to throw in my two cents, I am also a recent convert from the iPhoto/PSE combination to Aperture. Of course I still have PSE, but haven't needed to use it since I started using Aperture, as the editing tools are so powerful compared to those in iPhoto. Some key points I would make regarding aperture:
    1. iPhoto is non-destructive, as was pointed out above. You can always revert to your original, and can even find the original in the finder if you open the iPhoto library package and navigate to it. But Aperture is much more flexible and space efficient because it seldom creates additional files unless you ask it to. It just previews what your edits look like - it doesn't save an edited version of your photo. This means the library takes up less space, and you can back out/turn on individual edits and see the effects. Very cool.
    2. The iPhoto/PSE combination does not deal with editing of RAW format photos as well as Aperture. If you need to edit a RAW in PSE, editing is done in 8-bit color, and I believe saved as an 8-bit TIFF back to iPhoto. Aperture works in the full bit-depth and maintains the RAW file until you tell it to create something else. While I still have the "problem" (not to start a whole debate as to whether it is really a problem) of PSE only supporting 8-bit color for editing functions, I almost never need PSE. If I do I guess I can just put it at the end of my workflow and save my final jpeg or whatever.
    3. Aperture supports editing plug-ins, so that it's editing capability can be expanded. Granted, many if not most of these plug-ins cost money, but you could purchase several and have capabilities in some areas that exceed that of PSE, but still invest less money that you would for full Photoshop and have the benefit of not having to leave Aperture to do these edits.
    4. Aperture supports tethered shooting and remote control of your camera, if your camera supports these functions. It may be that only a minority of photographers are interested in these capabilities, but still, if you are one of them, it is important.

  • Photoshop Versus Photoshop Elements for Digital Art Creation and Layers

I'm using Photoshop Elements 10.    If I want to use Photoshop with digital art (paintings mostly) and want to do touch up work and move elements of paintings into multiple layers, what extra features does Photoshop have that would benefit this application?
And what features are in Photoshop Creative Cloud, and CS6, versus CS5?   I do want to save some money and CS5 might be quite sufficient for my amateur uses.

There is 16 bit and 8 bit, but probably will not make much difference.
Only you know what kind of art you are doing.  If Elements works for you I see no need to put out $700 for Photoshop.
Do some web searches like this one.  http://digital-painting-software-review.toptenreviews.com/

  • Lightroom versus PhotoShop Elements Organizer and Bridge

This is directed to the Adobe Developer Team
I hope someone of the Developer team is reading this!!
For my understanding the three products out of one house (PhotoShop Elements Organizer, Bridge and Lightroom) doing about the same, should ...
work the same (same idea, same behaviour, organizing by path/subfolders instead of cataloges etc.)
maintain the same database and files (LR should recognize the collections from BR and Vice Versa, use the same cache files etc.) and should
be compatible to each other (e.g. Tags, Collections etc)
    Actually I suggest ADOBE
to eliminate Organizer and integrate the good functions into BRIDGE (e.g. albums, upload to flickr, webpage generation etc)
give BRIDGE as the free of charge picture organizer to PS Elements and to PS CS
change LIGHTROOM into an payable upgrade of BRIDGE with enhanced functionality of the free of charge BRIDGE, (which can work as a stand-alone software as it does today
better integration of PSE, PS CS into Bridge/Lightroom (e.g. Panaorama function opens only PS CS but the version of PSE works much better, so I want to choose in the menu of Bridge/Lightroom)
I am really struggling with the three of them.
Beside that I suggest to get rid of the Catalog idea of Lightroom with it's import/export and synchronization needs and instead use or at least integrate the idea of BRIDGE to get pictures structured and organized by path and subfolders, as this is anyhow how the way pictures are stored already for most of us... I asume. I doubt that anybody just throw all files into one big subdirectory and get the organized into cataloges. But please keep collections as they are helpful to quickly collect some pictures to commonly work on them. by drag & drop. The Catalogues of LR drives me crazy but LR have a lot of nice functions (e.g. Webupload interfaces to flickr and others, nice noice reduction, nice albums and webpage functions, etc.)
    Thanks
Merry X-Mas and a Happy New Year
    Georg
PS: Please all of you comment your experience and opinion on this matter ... I am interested what you think about it.

    Hi George,
Whereas Bridge and Photoshop Elements (and most non-LR users) base their organisation on the file / folder structure, Lightroom uses files / folders simply for storage - the catalog is used for organisation. This 'catalog based approach' provides far more flexibility, both in organisation, and in recording a complete, fully-reversible record of all edits made to each photograph.
    To suggest that Adobe "get rid of the Catalog idea of Lightroom" and "get pictures structured and organized by path and subfolders" would remove almost ALL advantages Lightroom has over Bridge & PS Elements combined. To fully appreciate Lightroom, you need to appreciate that files and folders are not the only way to organise photos. Why not watch a few of the Adobe Lightroom Tutorial videos? This link below takes you to a video explaining about the Catalog;
    http://tv.adobe.com/watch/george-jardine-on-lightroom/the-lightroom-catalog/
    However, if you really want Adobe to hear your views, why not raise a Feature request with them, at this link below;
    https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform
I'm sure if you call your feature request 'Remove Catalog from Lightroom, and organise by Folders instead', it'll get noticed, as will any forum posts of the same name...
    Cheers,
    Alan

  • Photoshop Elements 2.0 versus Photoshop Elements 7.0

I am getting ready to get Microsoft Expression Web 2.0 and was told that the best program to accompany it for web design is Photoshop elements 7.0. I currently have on my computer Photoshop Elements 2.0 which came with it. I would like to know if there is much difference between the 2.0 and 7.0 enough for me to justify buying the upgraded program or can I do whatever I need to with the 2.0 without having to buy the 7.0? Thanks in advance for any insight that you can offer in this situation.

I had to upgrade from FrontPage to Expression Web because my computer crashed and I ended up having to purchase a new computer that brought vista and also brought Photoshop Elements 2.0. It seems to be working fine with vista and it brought the program with the computer.Anything I should be concerned about? My main readon for having to work with photoshop is that my photo galleries that I made with FrontPage cannot be edited or upfated with Expression Web and I was told that photoshop automatically makes some Photogalleries that I can import to Expression Web. Is this correct and is it a feature that works well in Elements 2.0? Thanks again for your time and response.

  • Photoshop Elements versus Lightroom

I am a beginner and have Photoshop Elements on my computer.  I have about 40 camera chips that I would like to organize.  Someone suggested I should use Lightroom instead of Elements as it is easier for a beginner to use.  Any suggestions?

No one has mentioned this yet, but using 40 memory cards (i.e. camera chips) is unnecessary. I would imagine most "professional" photographers don't even use that many. The images on memory cards should be transferred to your computer or laptop hard drive, which then allows shooting more pictures with your camera using the same card. You should also "backup" the images transferred to your hard drive using a portable external hard drive or online backup service.
If you are using that many memory cards (i.e. 40) for a specific purpose it would help if you explain why. This we we will help us to understand your specific needs and provide more detailed suggestions to assist you.

  • Having problems with aperture 3 on imac osx 10.7 and wish to install adobe photoshop elements 10, question will i loose all my liberary from aperture??

would i loose my fotos from the aperature library when i change to adobe photoshop elements 10. aperture keeps shutting my system down all available help has not done any good.  gmadeline

You'd only loose your Aperture libraries if you deleted them or damage them in some other way. The simple act of installing another app will not do this.
Of course you do realize that PS will not have any access to the Aperture libraries. If your originals are referenced then PS can get to them as it would to any file. If your originals are managed you will need to export them in order for PS to use them.
This all assumes you are abandoning Aperture for PS. If you are looking to do something else post back,

  • Adobe Photoshop Elements 4.0 and Snow Leopard

Can someone please help. We recently updated from 10.4 to 10.6 and now everytime I open Photoshop (4.0) it runs for maybe 30 seconds then stops and gives a message that Photoshop unexpectedly quit. I really need this program for my school work

That software bundle disk is exactly how my daughter got her Photoshop Elements 3 originally (with a Wacom tablet, still in use). It was originally installed on the old iMac G5 PPC (10.5.8) I still use from time to time (like right now), and has survived being migrated to an iMac Intel C2D (upgraded to 10.6.8) 4 years later followed by migration to the Macbook Air (10.6.8). Which is why I am perplexed about your experience, but maybe something is different about Element 4 versus 3. [But we also have Elements 6 similarly migrated on all these machines as well.] We actually have purchased separate copies of Elements 3 and 6 over the years due to having it on multiple machines. Right now, both version are running on 3 machines under 10.6.8, so I think yours should work also! We need to find out how.
To figure out if this a problem with the computer-wide installation or rather a local user-specific problem, try running the program from another user. If you have only one user, please create a new one and then try Photoshop Elements.
If the problem is user-specific (works for users except for one user), then I suggest you move the following three files out of that user's Preferences folder to a safe location, restart, then try the program again:
Photoshop Elements 3.0 Settings (a folder)
Photoshop Elements 3.0 Paths (a folder)
    com.adobe.Photoshop.Elements.plist (a file)
If the program works, then trash those files/folders that you moved and you are done. If the program still does not work for that user only, some more detective work may be needed.
As for the case where the program won't work for ANY user, you may need to consider reinstalling the software. For that, it is best to uninstall it first, if you have an uninstaller on your install disk (the software bundle disk). If not, one needs to search for and remove all signs of the software (the above files, the software package itself in the Applications folder, etc.). Then reinstall.
If all else fails and you have gotten tired of this, you can purchase a much newer version of Photoshop Elements (version 10, I think) that is much more capable and has been recently adapted for newer computers and operating systems. Probably ~ $100 or so. But I wouldn't give up yet.

  • Adobe Photoshop Elements 13 Won't launch

My motherboard died.  I put a new motherboard in and have been reinstalling the OS (Windows 7 Professional) and reinstalling all of the programs.  I successfully re-downloaded Adobe Photoshop Elements 13 and entered my license key and it installs.  When I launched it, it came up to the welcome screen, but when I try to open the Organizer or the Editor, it won't launch!  I switched to startup in the Organizer versus the Welcome Screen and now it won't launch at all!
I uninstalled the program and tried reinstalling.  It installed, but the program will not launch!

    Hi,
Try starting the two applications directly by creating shortcuts to the following files.
    Organizer: "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Elements 13 Organizer\PhotoshopElementsOrganizer.exe"
    Editor "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 13\PhotoshopElementsEditor.exe"
If you need help with creating the shortcuts then come back and I will explain how to do it.

  • Adobe Photoshop Elements 12 won't just Install

    Hi there,
I purchased a licensed  Adobe Photoshop elements 12 from the UK and installing it in Uganda. However when i tried installing it on my iMac running Mac 10.6.8 it failed at the 99% with an error message "the software your trying to install is a counterfeit" not genuine. what could be the cause of this and how can i over come it? I know for sure its a genuine copy of Adobe Photoshop elements 12. Any help
    Thanks
    Aggrey

The problem might stem from the purchase location versus the install location.  Normally you have to buy Adobe software thru local channels.

  • Problems with mac photoshop elements no longer working

I believe this problem started with or shortly after installing snow leopard.  But I couldn't access my photoshop elements 6 anymore on my mac.  I removed PE 6 (dragged to trash), and tried to reinstall it and now have the following error:
    JavaScript Alert
Critical errors were found in setup
    - The installer database is invalid: please re-install the product from the original media.
Please see the Setup log file for details.
So I've tried to remove as files associated with PE 6 nothing has helped.  I do have the original disk with the serial number etc.   I even downloaded the trial of PE 8 for mac, but received the same error.  I've been trying to find the answer to this problem, but nothing has helped.  Even called Adobe, but they sent me to the wrong area.  Sigh.
Any ideas would be welcome.  I'm about to give up on photoshop and go with Aperature, but I'd rather not.

You can't install PSE 6 or 8 by trashing them. You must use the uninstaller (for PSE 6, that means putting the install disc in and choosing Remove Components rather than Install Components). However, it's too late for that now. See this for how to clean up the mess:

  • ITunes albums Not Synching with Photoshop Elements 13

I just upgraded to Photoshop Elements 13.  Since upgrading, the Photoshop albums that I select to synch from iTunes are no longer updated on my iPhone.  I had the same problem when I upgraded to Photoshop Elements 12.  For v12, the problem was resolved by an update to iTunes that recognized the new version of Photoshop Elements.  Looks like I'll need to wait for an update to iTunes that can recognize "13" versus "12" ....

Similar issue here too.   iTunes will not recognize Photoshop Elements 13 albums for home sharing/Apple TV.   Guess we have to wait for an iTunes update.

  • Photoshop Elements 11 won't roundtrip in Aperture

I just purchased Photoshop Elements 11, installed it, selected it in the Aperture preferences, restarted Aperture and tried to edit an Aperture photo using the new Photoshop Elements 11.  From Apertures  "photos" menu I selected edit with Photoshop Elements  11.  Aperture created a new version and opened Photoshop Elements 11, but my photo file did not open in Photoshop Elements so could not edit it from Elements.  Anyone else have the same problem?  Ant suggestions appreciated.

Solved one problem with earlier version solution.
    Try Barbara's advice:
    http://barbarabrundage.com/2011/10/05/adobe-hide-and-seek-setting-pse-10-as-exte rnal-editor/
However I seem to have a problem getting the edited version of my Elements Photo to appear back in Aperture.
I save my edit and close Elements, but saved vesrsion of the photo does appear in Aperature.
    Any thoughts ??

  • Aperture vs Photoshop Elements

    Hi everyone,
I am considering switching from Photoshop Elements to Aperature. How happy will I be?
    Thanks for all your input!

Apps like Aperture and Lightroom are primarily images-management apps with limited editing capability; iPhoto is a free beginner version.
For significant editing but poor images-management one can use very expensive Adobe Photoshop, less expensive Adobe Photoshop Elements, Pixelmator or (free) GIMP.
IMO DSLR photogs should own/learn/use one app from each of the two categories above.
Specific to only removing distracting background elements are apps/plug-ins like KnockOut2.
You are using Elements, so editing is covered. For images management use iPhoto for free until it seems limiting. Only then embark on the one-time 30 day Aperture trial, realizing it it hardware-intensive (your MBP is adequate if RAM is maxxed).

  • Photoshop Elements 10 Installation Question

How can I tell if my software installed properly? The software came with three discs, and it only installed the first disc. I am new to Photoshop, and do not know if my software installed properly? Can anyone help?

    Gautham K,
    Thank you for your quick replies. I have checked,and my OS is indeed 64 bit. I have been using the 32 bit version of Adobe Photoshop Elements 10, since I installed it last evening. I have a few quick questions;
Will I loose any functionality if I stay with the 32 bit version versus un-installing and installing the 64 bit version from disc 2?
If I decide to un-install, and re-install from disc 2, will there be any software registration issues (as I have already registered the software)?
Thanks again for all of your help.
