Aperture 1.0 -- your performance experiences?

Hi guys,
how's your feeling for the performance of Aperture?
Here on my Dual G5 2.7GHz PowerMac it's really reeeaallyyy REALLY slow!
For example: I have a 3000x2000 raw image and even the loop tool, when moved over the full screen image on my 2nd display, is not realtime. I move the mouse to move the loop but the loop moves app. 0,5s after I moved the mouse.
I get roughly the same delay in response from the GUI when I move sliders like the Shadow/Highlight or Exposure or Saturation or or or any other GUI element.
Has Apple really meant to be this software so slow on their almost fastest machine? Are we all forced to buy quad-core (dual dualcore) PowerMacs?
disappointed,
Stefan.

Hi Stefan,
Exactly same machine here (with 6.5GB RAM, but should not make a difference, as according to Activity Monitor not used) also using the GeForce 6800 Ultra DDL and two displays and I do not have this effect. I would not call Aperture a speed demon, but is fast enough on the PM, on the PowerBook it is slightly painful.
Have you run the usual checks (repair permissions, hardware check etc.). Also I had severe trouble using Aperture with a wireless mouse, with the wired mighty one it is much more responsive.
Cheers,
Uwe

  • Aperture 3 with ridiculous performance

I started using Aperture on version 2 and I loved it. The main reason for that was that it was super fast in handling my 30 thousand photos.
After I upgraded to Aperture 3 though, the performance is pathetic. I can barely scroll through photos. Sometimes creating a simple Smart Album takes more than 60 seconds -- and I'm not exaggerating.
I really don't like Adobe, but I think I'll have to switch to LightRoom if I can get this fixed. I've read some posts about disk fragmentation being the cause for the problem, but I find that very hard to believe. Why wouldn't the same thing happen to Aperture 2?
    Turning off Faces didn't help.
Any other ideas on how to fix?

First, are you using "high performance" for the graphics settings on your MacBook Pro? You definitely want to do that.
Second, some here have reported that deleting the Aperture preferences file has helped. I can't say as I had real performance issues so I'm not sure.
Finally, is Aperture 3 doing anything in the background still (updating thumbnails, etc.)? This can slow things down.
I'll note that I find A3 to be faster on Snow Leopard than A2 was. I also think the fragmentation discussion is a red herring. But I also have good performance... it'd be nice if there were a silver bullet for what the difference is between the machines but I'm not sure.

  • Your heat experiences with the MBP 13 2012

Looking to buy a new machine, actually I already picked one, I'm going for a MPB 13.3inch i7 (2012).
Even though, I read a lot of people saying around the internet, that this machine tends to heat a LOT.
I want to know your personal experience with the mbp13 (2012 please, i7 experience would be even better). All kind of people welcome to share, from web-browsing like facebook, to word processing and even video edition or gamers (if you managed to play something on this ).

Good, because I have the Mid 2012 MacBook Pro 13-inch Non-Retina. I would say this computer really doesn't get hot at all. With your average Internet browsing with nothing else opened this computer is relatively cool and the fan is quiet. If you have multiple applications opened such as Safari, iTunes, Notes, and iPhoto for example, it gets a little warm but the fan is still just as quiet. Now video editing/gaming. When I am editing a YouTube video or playing a game (depending on how graphic intensive/big the game is) alone with nothing else opened, the computer gets fairly warm and the fan is louder. Now if I am editing a video/gaming and have other applications opened the fan can get really loud and the computer can get really hot. When I say 'really hot' I mean REALLY hot, because this is made out of aluminum the outside surface of the MacBook Pro can get even more hot then the inside. Keep in mind that the heat is different depending on what surface I'm on because on my pants, bed, couch, etc. it would be hotter but on a table it would be substantially cooler.
    Hope this helps,

  • Aperture 3.2.3 performance improvement

    Hello,
Yesterday I installed the Aperture update 3.2.3.
    I noticed a performance improvement.
I'm curious what your experiences are with this update.

I had thought of starting my own post but to ask just how many issues people were experiencing - rather than what if any improved performances people have seen.
Since updating to 3.2.3, I've been completely afraid to use it!  Right out of the gate, it completely hung up my Mac and I had to force restart while using it, which then of course required to repiar permissions, and I eventually had to do the more evasive, repair aperture library.  I could be having some other kind of issues, but it's funny - I only start having problems after any kind of Aperture update!
Things on Aperture are now VERY slow.  I just imported a large project of over 2000 photos that might be affecting my library and Aperture speed, but it shouldn't affect it this much.  And now, anything, and I mean ANYTHING that has to do ANY kind of processing - takes forever.  And I'm talking about the simpliest of edits will give me the spinning beach ball.
Here's one thing that JUST freaked me out, and why I came to the forums now.  I double clicked on a photo I had been working on so that I could get back to the full browser view, showing all the pics I had in a project, and all of Apeture went all weird, and broken up.  I can only describe it as looking like Aperture's interface broke up into a puzzle on my display.  I'm afaid to try duplicating what happened.
Suffice to say... I've already skimmed the support forums, but enough to know there's something seriously wrong with the recent 3.2.3 update. 3.2.1 was just as horrible, so I was happy, running along fine on 3.2.2, but now 3.2.3 is horrible - crashes, hangs, and takes forever brushing any kind of effects into shots.
I saw that Michael L. was going to try to revert back to 3.2.2  I'm also using a 2009 iMac 27" Core i7 with 10.6.8 with 16gigs RAM.  I refuse to upgrade to buggy Lion.  I would like to know what process you did to revert back if you did?  Just time machine or how?  And how has Aperture been running if / since you reverted back?

  • Aperture 3: poor Export performance

I'm running Aperture 3 on a MacBook Air (not the new model), with OS X 10.6.5. Whilst I welcome the simplicity of editing and keyword tagging in Aperture, I'm finding that it takes forever-and-a-day to export photos from Aperture, whether that's to my desktop or to Flickr or Facebook (and why isn't there a Picasa uploader, as with iPhoto?).
What I'm wondering is whether Aperture 3 is slow to export on any Mac, or is it just the Air? Whilst I realise that you wouldn't expect the best performance on a small lightweight laptop like the Air, nonetheless iPhoto wasn't too sluggish to Export, and the Pixelmator editing software that I also use is positively speedy.

    Hi LondonDave,
Welcome to the user-supported discussions forums.
I personally have an older laptop than yours, but it not an Air. I do not feel it takes too long to export, but that's certainly quite a subjective question. Would you feel mine is slow, and would I feel yours is sufficient? I haven't exported from iPhoto in years, but at the time (iPhoto 8), I didn't feel that Aperture was sluggish in exporting.
In fact, just yesterday, someone else commented that he exported 45 RAW photos from Aperture and it took less than 30 seconds. Doesn't seem to bad to him or me. If you agree, then you may be experiencing something with your hardware. Maybe a fairly full drive? Every export (even if to Facebook or Flickr) has to make a temporary copy on your hard drive.

As for Picasa exporter, Aperture 3 is actually the first Aperture to have built-in specialized exporters. There is an "export plug-in architecture" that allows any developer to write an export plug in. Some 3rd party developers had created Flickr and Facebook exporters for Aperture 2, which are no longer needed in Aperture 3 from the looks of things.
However, on the Aperture plug-in page, there is a Picasa exporter. I don't use Picasa so I don't know anything about it.

  • Tell me your YMC experiences

Disabling the YMC service has been a useful fix for many problems on the Yoga 13 (and possibly other Yoga models).  This worked great for me.
The interesting thing is that I have read that for some people, after disabling the YMC service, their Yoga no longer disables the keyboard/trackpad when flipped around into tablet or tent mode.  For others, including me, the keyboard/trackpad still disables correctly when flipping around.
I would like to hear from users that have had either experience to try to determine why the keyboard disable feature doesn't work for some but works for others, after disabling the YMC service.
Please post a reply about whether that works for you or not, and maybe a little about your configuration.  If you haven't tried disabling YMC, it is safe to experiment with - if you don't like the results you can always simply re-enable it.
    Thanks,
    lmader

I just setup another one of these that I had to disable YMC on because it was causing performance issues. It is connected to a Lenovo USB 3.0 dock that is pushing two 27" monitors. The laptop lid was closed with the lid power option set to 'Do Nothing' while on Power. It was extremly sluggish with major delays, as soon as I disabled YMC it ran perfect.
Is YMC also causing DPTF to affect the processor speed when in a closed lid state?
Wow, that is a new one, but it definitely sounds like the same thing.  You certainly don't need ymc if you are docked so  that seems like a good solution. Some people prefer to disable DPTF in BIOS, especially those that have a system where the keyboard won't disable in tablet mode, but I don't have this issue and prefer disabling ymc.

  • How big is your Library and how is your Performance?

I am getting a new iMac this week and would like to import all of my photos into iPhoto. I have upwards of 10K and will continue to add to it.
    I will be getting a 2.4 20" iMac with a 320GB 7200 drive and 3GB of RAM.
What kind of performance can I expect? Will it be snappy when viewing that many files?
How many photos are in your library, what are your system specs, and what is your iPhoto 08 performance like?

    Mike:
My primary library has 20,500 photos/movies in it. It takes 8-10 seconds to load and be ready for my activity. After that it's quite fast.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Splitting BC tasks between 2 teams - your advices/experiences please

    Hello dear Basis friends,
I am in need of your valuable advices /  experiences.
Our company is in the process of remodeling the IT department.
Following this process, they want to split the operational part of BC tasks from the project/architecture part. Up to now, our group (the BC team) is the only one with deep knowledge of the Basis side from SAP. The operation responsibles have asked us to provide documentation on problems that could happen on SAP / Oracle to not rely on heavy experts to do the day-to-day tasks(SIC). They also want to suppress our accesses from all QA and PRD systems.
No need to say that we are not very reluctant about this situation.
What are your thoughts about this ? Do you have experience of company where such a model of managing BC tasks works ? To the contrary, if you fell it does not fit into this type of organization, what good arguments can you offer me to defend that point of view in front of managers (not tech people).
    Thank you for your time.

Yes, I use OnyX because it runs them at times I have scheduled it to do so. 10.4.0 or later runs them automatically, if the computer is on and idle at 1AM, which isn't normal for many people so running them with an app can be good if you leave your machine running for days or weeks at a time. That said if you shut down your machine down every night there is no need to because the tasks will be run at boot each morning.

  • Web Service performance - experience, recommendations?

    Hi everyone,
We have an application that access unstructured content in CM SDK. We are looking at migrating to Oracle Content Services.
The application makes extensive use of the SQL views that show CM SDK content, but these views have disappeared from the current version. The official position from Oracle is "The recommended way to get useful information about Content Services / ContentDB is to use the WebServices APIs."
Does anybody some performance numbers they are willing to share? It worries me a bit that I'll need to make thousands and thousands of web service calls every day...
    Best regards
    Sten Vesterli
    Scott/Tiger A/S

I'm not sure from your description but it sounds to me like the Web Service should be implemented as a eInsight Business Process (BP) which delegates to the JCD to do the heavy work, if any. This way each SOAP request can be handled by a separate instance of the BP. Otherwise, if the JCD is implemented as a externally callable Web Service, then the SOAP requests would be processed serially by a single instance of the JCD.
Assuming that you have the SOAP->BP->JCD->QUEUE arrangment, you should consider these other tuning factors:
    - Business Process Max Concurrent Instances to handle requests in its eInsight Engine
    - eInsight Engine
    ---Receive Timeout
    --- Work Item Submit Limit
    ---Invocation Allocation Ratio
    ---No persistence unless essential
---- if you need it also consider Application Mode = Multiple
    ---- tune the database
    --- No monitoring unless essential
    - Integration Server
--- HTTP Listerner Acceptor Threads and/or Virtual Servers
--- Thread Pool Min and Max Size and Timeout (use asadmin to configure)
    --- JVM Heap Space
There is no magic algorithm. I'd recommend that you configure the Integration Server so that you can use JConsole to monitor it and then use SoapUI to do the performance testing.
    Regards.

  • Your TouchSmart Experience??

I'm considering purchasing a TouchSmart PC and would appreciate your experience on some uses:
We presently use Vista Media Center a lot and the family is comfortable using a lot of its features.  I understand that TouchSmart provides access to many of the same features.
    1.  Have you found that using TouchSmart is better than using the native MCE screens?
    2.  Are there features in MCE that are not available from TouchSmart?
2a.    If so, is it easy to access MCE from touchsmart to access the unique MCE features?
2b.    Do you find it annoying to switch between TouchSmart and MCE (or other PC functions outside TouchSmart?)
    3.  Does the TouchSmart calendar provide a way to import calendar information from Outlook?
    4.  Is the i504 adequate for processing TouchSmart / multitouch / etc., or is the step up to the better processor and graphics of 506 and 800 series necessary?
    5.  I read in the forum that TouchSmart can't access music (and I therefore assume photos / videos) from network storage.  Can it access from a Windows Home Server?  from an attached USB drive?
    Thanks for any responses!!

yeah, you can basically run Media Center components directly from the command line, for example that link that rasterblaster mentions was something that i have now setup at home...
    So for example to load up the TV directly from the command line you run;
    C:\Windows\EHOME\EHSHELL.EXE /HOMEPAGE:VideoFullscreen.XML /PUSHSTARTPAGE:TRUE
So you can add this to a Tile and it will be made available as a Tile in Touchsmart.
I found it runs ok when Touchsmart and MC TV are running together, however if you load up another app like a game or maybe Word or something then TV may begin to suffer with jolting picture refreshes - very annoying.
As for music stored on a share, i'm eargerly waiting for this to be made available - i hope they can incorporate WMP library into Touchsmart Music somehow, (as described in the documentation) this way you can optionally use either WMP or Touchsmart without having to maintain both, if they can do this then this would be a major thumbs up for me....
Another thumbs up would be to get the Mic option working or made available in the Touchsmart Notes app, this would be real cool!

I've been reading the other thread about the T61 shipping and am definitely NOT pleased with other people's experience. It must be a pain to go through, sorry for those that went through it.
I just wanted other experiences, as far as those who live in the US. I live in the northeast US, specifically New York. I'm worried that I'm going to end up with a 3-5 week wait time from the day I order my laptop to the day I actually receive it. As of now, I'm all set to order through my company (for the corporate discount), and can't wait to use the laptop. However, I'm having second doubts on whether or not I should get a T61 because of the excessive wait. Since I'll be ordering through my company, do you think Lenovo CSR's will give me priority? I don't know whether or not this will help, and I doubt it - but I was just curious.
Are there any other fellow US T61 owners who ordered through Lenovo recently? Can you please share you experiences, whether it is good or bad? I'd like to hear them both.
I most likely will get a system with the following specs:
    Intel Core 2 Duo T8300, 2.4 GHz, 3MBL2
    OS: Windows Vista Home Basic
    14.1" WXGA+ TFT
    nVIDIA Quado NVS 140M

I purchased a customized thinkpad t61p on June 7 and the computer shipped on June 12 by express mail (I payed for ground shipping so that was a nice surprise). I received it two days later on June 14 in the morning. Extremely fast build and ship time so I am very happy. By the way I live in Raleigh, NC.

  • How well does Aperture (i.e., brushes) perform on the iMac 3.06GHz?

I currently have a MBP 2.4GHz. I have the latest version of Aperture and my camera is a Canon 5D Mark II. I have noticed that when using Aperture's brushes that it really taxes my MBP. It will take a while to process and sometimes I get the spinning rainbow ball forever.
I know the 3.2 iMac works quite well as I toyed with it at the Apple Store. Unfortunately, the Apple Store didn't have any 3.06 iMacs on display.

The difference between the 3.06 and 3.2 will be more than eclipsed by maxxing out the memory and getting a fast beefy hard drive.
