Aperture (1.1 & 1.0.1) adjustments are chunky and slow

I know there are other threads on "performance is slow" and 1.1 success/failure opinions, but really wanted to just talk specifics here.
I wanted to hold my powder a bit until I had a chance to work the tools a little, and didn't want to post based on just 1.0.1. Anyway, you can see my specs below, I am running on a brand new G5 dual (core)-2.3Ghz, 4.5GB RAM, Nvidia 7800GT video. The images I am working with are roughly 8-9MB CR2 RAW files from a Canon 20D.
I can say definitively that overall Aperture performance is not good. Here's some examples:
1) RAW image loading: when I click between images, it takes about 3 seconds to load each image.
2) Rotation tool: unbelievably chunky. When I first put the rotation tool over an image and move the tool, it takes anywhere from 2-4 seconds before the image responds by rotating. After the image starts to rotate, moving the tool further results in intermittent smooth rotation and 1 second response time, making for a chunky, jumpy rotation.
3) Exposure, Saturation, Brightness, and Contrast sliders: drag the slider, it takes anywhere from 1-3 seconds before the slider responds and catches up with the mouse. After the initial slider movement, if you still have the mouse pressed, additional slider movement is smooth.
4) Crop tool bounding box: intermittent smooth drag/delayed response on changing the bounding box size.
5) Loupe tool: mostly smooth, but occasionally just stops and hangs for several seconds, then jumps to where the mouse is.
I've got brand new hardware, significant processing power, memory, and the on the top end of video card. I have dual SATA-250 drives underneath me, which aren't even half full, so I/O should be good.
Given that 1.1 is the improved-performance update, and I'm fairly tapped on hardware, I don't know how to conclude anything other than Aperture doesn't perform all that well. Am I missing something?
I would appreciate the experience others are having on their hardware -- please no "it performs well for me" responses. I appreciate your subjective opinion, but I don't really know what that means unless you can give feedback on the amount of time for tools to respond.
Thanks,
Brad

1) RAW image loading: when I click between images, it takes about 3 seconds to load each image.
How long does Photoshop take to load the same image? Come on now, it take 3 seconds or longer. Do you expect Aperture to preload your image? I don't get the 'instant' loading complaint when any program takes time to load a large file. 10D 6mp loading is one second. 5D 12mb files 3sec. Your expectations should be the same in Aperture or PS.
This has depended on other programs open and what is going on in the background. We process only with Aperture open. Rendering takes power and time. That tool takes some skill because of a slight rendering time, but I can pretty much nail the rotation after using it for processing. Agree with the slight rendering/delay but it is not a huge concern. You can always go to the hud and rotate by numbers in increments.
3) Exposure, Saturation, Brightness, and Contrast sliders: drag the slider, it takes anywhere from 1-3 seconds before the slider responds and catches up with the mouse. After the initial slider movement, if you still have the mouse pressed, additional slider movement is smooth.
Again, click the arrow on the sliders. My sliders are real time, but I do prefer to use the arrow in the HUD and possible last adjust by slider. I know by number where I want the adjustment. That comes from experience. Aperture is wonderful for fine tuning. I suggest you go by numbers if the sliders are a bother.
4) Crop tool bounding box: intermittent smooth drag/delayed response on changing the bounding box size.
Smooth enough on our iMac?
<<<Am I missing something? >>>>
Patients for rendering times is what you are missing or so it seems?
The best thing for you is to not use the sliders until the last adjustment and use the arrow adjustments or type in your values. We have grown so used to instant reaction when a button is pushed. The brain says, hey, I clicked and I want it now. It was a frustration in 1.0 for us so we started using the arrows and just got used to that method. 1.1 is much faster and near real time but we are still using our learned arrow adjustments.

I found a solution that worked for me.  Here is what I did and where I found it.
"Looks like I tracked down the problem, it worked for me so I hope this works for everyone else experiencing problems.  Go to your Task Manager and locate the program APSDaemon.exe (Apple Push)..... if you see this executing terminate the program and then startup iTunes and it should come up fine.  You will see afterwards that APSDaemon.exe (Apple Push) starts back up but this is fine as long as iTunes has already started.
I tried playing both music and syncing up my iPhone with no problems.  Note if you shutdown iTunes again you will have to terminate the process APSDaemon.exe (Apple Push) again.  Haven't had time to see what in the world Apple Push is but this appears to have corrected the problem so that you can at least use iTunes and sync any device that needs to be synced.
    Hope that helps everyone!"

  • Local adjustments are almost unusably slow!

Most of the time I use the local adjustment brush, it runs so slow I can't stand it. I mean sometimes 20-30 seconds to catch up! I am running Vista 64bit with a quad processor, 8 g of ram and a Nvidia 9600. It's a crime such a great program has to work like this. There must be a reason. Anyone have an answer for me?

Those issues may due to the wacom drivers. I have had several issues with them and have decided to go back to the mouse becuase wacom can't seem to get it right in Vista x64

  • Are bursts and slow motion videos transfered as they are to a PC

I wasn't sure how to ask this question in short. I have an iPhone 5s and a Windows computer. When I take a burst photo, how does it work when I transfer the photos/videos directly to my computer? (not going through iTunes) Do the bursts save as individual pictures or are they lost? or maybe you can only see them on your iPhone? Also with slow motion videos, I know they don't save as slow motion unless you save them again as if that was real life capture. I do believe that they become slow motion again if i put them back on my phone, as the format is probably the same. Is this true?

Premiere Pro just doesn't do slow motion very well, especially not with 24 fps footage.  You can help correct that:

  • How to reduce size of RAW & PSD files after all adjustments are finished?

I thought I read something about an Aperture feature that reduces file size of RAW files to something like a large .jpg file. I have finished adjusting many RAW files and could better use the disc space for other things. Is there any such feature or procedure? I have not upgraded to Aperture 2.0 but will soon.
Also, after making the round-trip to PhotoShop Elements, I see a large PSD file. Can I shrink that file after all adjustments are made?

If you're using referenced files in Aperture, you can archive the raw files onto a CD or some other place and delete the original. Just make sure Aperture is set to generate previews before you do this. That way you can see the file even after it's gone. You can't export or make any adjustments unless you can re-link the raw file.
And as far as PSD files, you should change your preferences to use TIFF for external editors. Then at least you can save the file in Photoshop as a compressed TIFF, which can save quite a bit of room. Also, I've noticed that Aperture uses 16-bit TIFF files, so you can save even more room by converting the file to an 8-bit TIFF.
By the way, take note that while Aperture defaults to ".tiff" as it's file suffix for TIFF files, Photoshop prefers ".tif". This can cause confusion. You've been warned.

  • How will Aperture treat Nikon raw images which have been enhanced using Capture NX2 software?  Some are cropped and "developed" and some have been enhanced using the control point technology.  I have NIK sw as a plug-in in aperture.

Actually, there is a Nik/Nikon connection — but I am pretty sure it is irrelevant to the OP's question. The connection is that Capture NX2 was written as a joint venture between Nikon and Nik. (The name similarity is a coincidence.)
Capture NX2 is a cool program that incorporates the features of Nik's Viveza and Nikon's Raw processing engine, along with some other powerful image adjustment features. It provides, like Aperture, a losses workflow. Unlike Aperture, the adjustments (Edit Steps in C-NX terminology) are saved in the original NEF file along with the un-altered raw data. Multiple versions can be saved in a single NEF.

If it is still slow after removing Symantec, you may need a RAM upgrade. Yosemite can run very poorly on older machines with only 4 GB RAM.

  • Error message when uploading book for printing. All images are jpg and rgb. Could they be too large to upload? What size is required and how do I reduce size in Aperture?

I receive an error message when I upload my book for printing. Not sure what the problem is. All my images are jpg and rgb. Could they be too large as it takes about 15minutes to upload to Apple. How do I reduce the size of the image in Aperture?

    Hi Leonie,
    Thanks for your reply.
Error message below. The preview is fine . I can discount the first 2messages as its a new computer so plenty of disk space and upload doesn't seem to be interrupted. I have uploaded to iphoto before. have tried to upload 3times with the same error message. I had to photo my slides with a Kaiser Baas photo maker , which apparently doesn't scan but takes photos in megapixels of the slides. I am wondering now if the format is incompatible though they are jpg files or the colour type wrong. The image files are  around 1-3 mb each and  72 ppi. I think  I will now scan them properly with a scanner to 300dpi anyway to improve quality.
Apple  talks about image files not being too big for uploading but gives no sizing of what too big is?
    Error message
    1. Upload Error. Loss of connection or file corruption during order upload may cause an incomplete order. Resubmitting your order usually resolves this issue.
    2. Low Disk Space. If your computer is running on low disk space, your files may be assembled incorrectly. Create more space by deleting unused files.
    3. Unreadable PDF file or image files. Files are sometimes assembled incorrectly due to CMYK or Grayscale color space. Use the RGB color space for best results.

Thanks Larry. That certainly gives me some understanding. Can't imagine I'm the only Aperture user with that concern, so I certainly hope Adobe and others will fill the void. Without that feature, Photos is pretty much a non-started for me.

I'm having trouble with the develop module in LR5.4. Any adjustments are taking effect, but only viewable in the filmstrip, not on the main photo. The navigator will go grey, as does the main area too. This applies to all edits done in develop module. I have posted several times on the forum with no responses to address this, and have seen others with the same issue. I have even gone as far as to do a complete re-install of LR5, with no success. I'm at a loss, and I depend on it for so much editing. Please help.

I have been considering buying Aperture 3 but the numerous, negative reviews are making me wary.  Should I buy the first version - Aperture 2.1.1 instead?
I have a 2009 MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard.  I do not think I will upgrade to Lion because I was warned that it may conflict with some of my applications.
There have been so many reviews that talk about how Aperture 3 is so slow and spends too much time searching for Faces and eventually crashes.  And, many reviews mention that you need to add to your RAM which I can't do right now, especially on a 3 year old computer.
There are some copies Aperture 2 on Amazon.  Would that be a good place to buy a copy or a used copy?
I would appreciate some good advice.  Thanks, Taf Schaefer

Obviously you haven't read the reviews of Aperture 2
FWIW I use Ap3 on both a 2010 MBP (8 gigs of Ram) and an 2008 iMac (4 gigs) and I have no crashing issues whatever. Remember, you can disable Faces if you don't want to use that feature.

Just an FYI: iPhoto supports exactly the same Raws as Aperture.

  • Manual value adjustments are not allowed in the year of settlement

    Hello Experts ,
We have an AUC which has a value of 683,969.70 .  Now we have an unplanned depreciation  of 82,500.00-  which is yet to be posted .
My user wants to run AIBU to do an AUC settlement for the same asset .
However it is giving the following error .
Manual value adjustments are not allowed in the year of settlement
    Message no. AW609
    Diagnosis
It is not possible for technical reasons to settle an asset under construction (802438 0) with manual value adjustments in the year of settlement.
    Procedure
Reverse the manual value adjustments in the year of settlement. Post them directly to the settlement receivers.
Please advice what needs to be done .
    Regards
    Anirban

    Hi:
By standard AUC assets are never subject to any kind of depreciation. They are assigned 0000 deo key in OAYZ . This is the cause of the error you are facing. Reverse unplanned depreciation and then settle it.

  • Adjustments are copied to next image...

Have noticed a strange behavior lately with LR 5 when I am making small adjustments in the Basic panel.
The problem seems to happen when I am moving through the images too fast.
If I make some adjustments to an image and then hit the arrow key to go to the next image, all of the previous adjustments are copied over.
I typically use the Previous button for a lot of my editing but LR does this on it's own. I then need to Reset the photo to default and start over.
Not a huge annoyance until it gets to the point where you need to re-edit some photos and it copies over everything.
This happened several times to me today. I had an event fully edited but decided there were a few photos that needed minor adjustments.
As I was quickly scrolling through making adjustments where needed, I would notice that LR would drastically change the settings to match the previous photo.
This completely slowed me down and I had to re-edit so many photos. In some cases it would even copy over the cropping I had done.
    Very annoying.
I hate to say but I am not very impressed with this version of LR so far. Feels rushed and not polished. I understand that each version has it quirks and issues but so many for
an established program. Tempted to go back to 4. Slow and unusable healing brush and now this annoyance are two major hits for me.
    Regards,
    Toby

After installing LR5 yesterday, importing the existing LR4 catalog and working on pictures imported in the LR4 catalog but not edited in LR4, I detected the same behavior. After looking to the hot issues, I thought, that this is only a problem on my system. Then I found your entry in the forum. During serching for an entry for our issue, I found a lot of bugs reported for LR5 by users which are not mentioned in the "hot issues". I'm using LR since version 1 and I had never expected a bug during the first basic steps in a new version. LR 5.0 seems really to be on of the worst versions ever issued by Adobe. I think I will do the editing of my holiday pictures with LR 4.3 and waiting at least for LR 5.1.

  • Since upgrade of aperture, my photos from a year ago are not in library.  On time machine, they are there, but I cant transfer them to todays aperture library because it says the old version is not supported.  Please help!!

Since the upgrade of Aperture, my photos from a year ago are not showing up.  When I go to time machine, they show up in the library, but I cant transfer them to my todays aperture because it says the old program needs to be updated.  How do I get my pics from a year ago transferred to todays Aperture?  Please help!!!!

You will be restoring the old Aperture library from TM, having it on the Desktop is fine.
Once the restore is finished you will have the old Aperture library in that folder. Now you want to open this library by double clicking it (the library). This will open Aperture on it and Aperture will  tell you the library needs to be upgraded. Let Aperture upgrade the library.
Once the Library is upgraded to the latest version of Aperture you can do want you want with it. Once you have gotten to this point if you still need help post back.
