Aperture 1.5+ media coverage/reviews
Has anyone else been struck by the lack of media coverage/reviews of Aperture after the 1.5 release?
Seems to me that a lot of criticism raised by reviewers concerning Aperture 1.0 and 1.1 were dealt with in 1.5 and subsequent releases (ability to reference, rather than manage, files being the biggest), but the reviewers who raised those criticisms have not done followup reviews. I'm not surprised that critics such as Michael Reichmann have not re-visited Aperture, since they have turned up as Adobe selected Lightroom alpha and beta testers. But, even Ben Long only did a "First Look" on 1.5 on the creativepro site, and never followed up with the promised full review.
On a related note, Lightroom is the subject of a number of dedicated websites with video "how-to's" etc., but O'Reilly's "Inside Aperture" and Bagelturf are the only ones I know of for Aperture.
PowerMac G5 Dual 2.0 Mac OS X (10.4.8)
Let's be realistic, Aperture can only be used on a Mac and that's only 5 % of the market. Adobe had about 500,000 customers download their beta and a total of over 1,000,000 downloads. Photoshop is the 800 pound gorilla. Aperture is a wonderful product, but what Adobe does to answer the competition Aperture has created, will get much more press. Besides, NAPP and other organizations are built in Adobe advertisers and some base their livelihood on Adobe's new products and the need for quality training. Aperture will help sell more Macs and stands up quite well against Lightroom, but Lightroom's father is the 800 pound gorilla.

I can not see Aperture in the media brower of iMovie and idvd since I have upgraded my iphone 5
I have Aperture 3.4.2 (most updated version I could find). Now when I look to make a movie or dvd with my photos. I can not find any of my recent photos in imovie or idvd via their respective media browsers. Aperture and iphoto are both working fine and great (ie: I can adjust my photos accordingly and print them out). I was able to successfully make both an imovie and then burn it on idvd (added photos to the idvd screens via media browers too), last week.
The only thing I can think that is different with my computer is that I upgraded my iphone from iphone4 to iphone5.
This is what I have looked into already:
Aperture>Preferences>Preview is set to share and set to always>photo preview set to Don't limit (no change)
Tried alt+cmd when opening Aperture and reset Aperture (as well with iphoto). (no change)
Itunes>Advanced>choose photos to share> then a window pops up stating Aperture could not be found open Preferences in Aperture (My first step already proved that it should be fine)
My question is why all of a sudden is Aperture and most of my iphone photos not showing up in imovie or idvd all of a sudden? Does the recent Iphone5 updgrade have anything to do with it?
Any help would be great since I have been looking all over the web for an answer with no success.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Aperture Reading From Media Card?
I use a Panasonic FZ30, which is nowhere to be found on the Aperture camera support pages. So, if I use an external media card (sD) reader, will Aperture import the files? RAW would be great, but JPG would do if the issue is Aperture not liking Pan RAW files.
Anyone know?
TIA,
MauryOk Maury, a quick test on your part. If you open finder and browse to a folder with your Panasonic files in it, can you see thumbnail pictures of those files? If not, then Aperture probably won't import those files. I've read taht there seems to be some correlation between what the OS can handle and what Aperture can handle.
This is only conjecture on my part, but should be a quick and dirty check that you can do.

Aperture in iMovie Media Browser
I have looked in the Aperture manual, in the iMovie help, and I did a search on this forum. So far, I can't find an answer and I hope you can help. I recently upgraded from iPhoto to Aperture 3 and everything is working fine in Aperture 3. In Aperture 3, I have the projects sorted by date, which is the way I want them. that works fine. But when I use the Media Browser to access my Aperture projects, they are sorted alphabetically, not by date. This was not a problem when I used iPhoto, so I don't understand what the issue is. Is there some way to get the iMovie media browser to use the same sort order I have specified in Aperture 3? Thanks in advance for the help.
naperdan, thanks for your response. No, I had not seen that thread before, but it doesn't address my issue. Aperture 3 is working just fine for me, and I am not having any of the problems after importing my iPhoto libraries into Aperture 3 that the OP indicated. I can see all of my Aperture projects and albums in the Media Browser, I just can't find how to show them by date rather than by name. I could, I suppose, rename all 46 projects (e.g., change "photos0810" to "0810photos" and that would probably force the Media Browser to work the way I want it to. I just don't understand why it would show the iPhoto library in the sort order I specified in iPhoto but the Media Browser is treating the Aperture 3 library differently.

I used to select photos from Aperture in the Finder under the "Media" category, but suddenly I only see iPhoto (which has nothing of note in it). How can I restore Aperture. I'll need to be able to find it to use Adobe's Carousel.
Aperture v 3.2.1
OS 10.7.2 (Lion)Hello Alice,
that is a pity.
Then quit Aperture, remove the Aperture preference file from your Library, maybe that file is corrupted, log off and log on again.
To remove the preferences:
To open your hidden Library select: Finder -> GO -> (hold down the opt/alt key) and select "Library"
In the Library open the "Preferences" folder and remove "com.apple.Aperture.plist"
Hope that helps

Can Aperture Import Expression Media Thumbnails?
I need a cataloging program for my 38,000 images that are currently in Expression Media Pro. Shortly after buying iView I got an upgrade which basically wrecked my catalog. The only help I was able to get was from a discussion group and Expression has a charge of 250.00 for support!! I would buy a new program for that kind of money. My catalog is still somewhat crippled and I am looking for a way out, but the thought of rescanning hundreds of CD's and DVD's gives me a serious headache. Can Aperture import the thumbnails and perhaps the keyworks and some other info? Can any program? I feel like it is only a matter of time when Expression Media stops working without another upgrade and I'm not going there.
It seems that subject is getting little attention here so I took it elsewhere. Take a look as there may be a solution.

Laptop needs an "Aperture Lite"? Just for reviewing projects.
I am never going to run Aperture on my powerbook or older
computers. I do need to show clients their weddings.
Apple! Any chance of an Aperture Lite that can view projects only on
our 1.25 12inch powerbook? I don't need the conversions or other
tools that drag down the speed. I do need to show client and would
love the same interface for that purpose.
Sure would be nice to see a light table, book design and review
interface on our powerbook. There are many software programs that have lite
versions. I don't see why
Aperture can't also just for all of us with older
powerbooks and computers that can meet the high end
requirements. Aperture could read the powerbook
requirements and install a lite version for viewing
only. A lite version that is not so power hungry
would be a great idea for client review. A lite
version could read the raw files and display proxy
that would open fast, show a light table or even have
the book design feature.
I was thinking out loud about what would be nice for
those of us with the older powerbooks that can not
install or use Aperture. A trimmed down version
would still be valuable in the way we want to use it
as a library and for showing clients our wedding
galleries.
iPhoto or Preview would work for this and they both cost nothing, actually even on my iBook Aperture is very usuable for browsing and proofing.

Aperture and the media library
Hi,
Since I've upgraded to Aperture 3.0, iTunes can no longer see my Aperture library. Is there something I should know or we are waiting for an iTunes update?
In Aperture I regenerated the previews for all the pictures, but no help there. I can see that in the media section of an open dialog, I can no longer see my Aperture pictures, just iPhoto library is there.

Does anyone know if there's a website or other resource where people can rate their reception in the AT&T 3G network? According to the AT&T website, I'm in prime 3G coverage, both at home and at work. But then, I was also supposedly in great coverage 10 years ago when I got an AT&T cellphone, and I had dropped calls and zero bars everywhere I went.
Or conversely, is anyone here from the South Jersey (Gloucester county) area? If so, how is your 3G reception/signal strength? My current contract with Verizon is up in January, and I need to decide if I want to switch. Verizon coverage is excellent here, but I'm a little miffed that their "unlimited" data plan has a 5GB/month limit. It's a limited-unlimited plan, I guess. It is fine here. Never had issue.
As for 3G map, well it is as accurate as needed to be by laws about advertising. Thus should actually answer your question. You can get down close to see reported coverage (which is data from their actually customers).
Not sure how you expect random people in a forum to help any by saying it is fine for them where they live. Not like you know exactly each place any user that responds is.
Also your question is more like a "poll" which is against the TOS you agreed to here. Sorry if we have come off as rude, but the question is just odd for this forum since it doesn't meat the requirements of a post here.

Verizon Media Manager and Aperture
I just upgraded from iPhoto to Aperture. Verizon Media Manager (VMM) sort of recognizes Aperture, but not completely. It finds the Faces and Locations, but not the Projects. I am using version 9.1.42 of VMM. I saw in the pinned section that someone was using version 9.2. Where can I get this version?
mustbjones wrote:
Yes there is but it says that the update service is temporarily disabled.
Here is the link for the Mac download from Verizon: http://www36.verizon.com/fiostv/web/UnProtected/MediaManager.aspx?os=Mac. It is likely the current version. -
Aperture 3.0.2 or Keynote 5.0.3 Bug: Sharing Media
I was replacing a graphic in Keynote '09, sharing media from both iPhoto and Aperture. There was an image I wanted to use from Aperture. When I looked at it, I discovered the image was crooked, so I straightened it in Aperture. When I tried to bring it into my Keynote presentation using the media browser, the image did not appear, either as an icon or as a list item. I then modified another image in Aperture, and it too became no longer available through the media browser.
I recreated both thumbnails and previews for the entire Aperture project in which the images were located, but to no avail. The two images remained unavailable through the media browser. I closed both applications, reopened Keynote, and still the images were not available.
I saved the Keynote presentation to a different name and closed it. When I reopened this newly saved version of the presentation, the images from Aperture were now available through the media browser.
Somewhere between Aperture and Keynote, media are not being properly shared/maintained. The current workaround is fine, but something is broken between these two apps (and probably affects others too).
Hope this helps someone! Thanks for the heads-up. For those too lazy to click through, here is the list of changes:
This update improves overall stability and fixes issues in a number of areas. The key areas addressed include:
Upgrading Aperture 1.x and 2.x libraries
Importing libraries from iPhoto or from earlier versions of Aperture
Importing hierarchical folders of photos into a library
Adding names and confirming matches in Faces
Reordering snapshots on the Faces corkboard
Creating and saving print presets
Duplicating metadata presets
Adjustments using Curves, Straighten and Retouching
Navigation of photos in the Viewer using scrolling
Importing ratings, color labels and GPS data from XMP sidecar files
IPTC metadata compatibility
Deleting photos when emptying the Aperture Trash
Exporting versions and libraries
The update is recommended for all users of Aperture 3.

"The Interview" The Movie, Reviewed and Revealed
Well, we were having a nice Christmas Eve and one of the younger members of the family enters the room with his Apple computer and says, hey, let's watch The Interview, I have rented it online for $6.00, so what are we going to say, in the spirit of Christmas giving, we immediately stopped our Christmas classic in Blu-ray on my great new Oppo 105 D ultra Blu-ray player, a true classic, George C. Scott, The Christmas Carrol, so everyone could watch the new and way overly publicized, The Interview, BAD DECISION, oh my, worse than BAD!
Have you ever wasted two hours of your life that you can never get back on a worthless movie, well that is what we did, and we did it at Christmas, loosing that wonderful Christmas spirit to see a movie that is badly written, with a terrible story, is beyond worthless, crude, and only people with limited thinking capacity could even be remotely entertained, YES, it is that bad. This movie is for teenagers from 13-15, not one second older as it's just immensely worthless, uninteresting, badly written, unreal childish humor, not funny, and did I say worthless, no it gives new profound meaning to the word worthless! I was told it will be shown at one or more of the small theathers here in Nashville, and when this movie was over, I thought to myself and shared with my good friend, can you imagine how angy people are going to be after spending $10-15 each to see this worthless piece of trash, heck I was angry someone in our family lost $6.00. You have no idea just how terrible this movie is, you must trust me on this. Please, I beg you, be pattient, if you just must see it, wait for it on HBO, they show all sorts of junk, and this junk will make it's way on down the line to HBO much sooner than later. If all the Sony cyber mess had not happened, this movie would be on HBO by next week, it would not make it to a drive in. I read one very informative article that said people are so misguided thinking they are doing something patriotic by going to a theater to see this movie, and in reality Kim Jong un get's the last laugh, as he has been behind hacks for many years, and this just strengthens his position with his own people telling them we are trully the enemy of North Korea, and he is their savior. The whole thing is pitiful, pitiful that Sony will make one dime off this worthless badly written movie, and that North Korea has any effect on the American people, he is like a house fly and not worth all this media coverage, we are playing right into his hands, but forget about Kim, I'm more worried about the American people wasting their hard earned money and two hours of their life and car fuel on probably one of the worst movies from Sony in a good long time, OK I HAVE WARNED YOU, I HOPE YOU LISTEN!
LiteJazzOh, one HUNDRED dollars. Sheesh. My eyesight is bad. And my brain decided there was another zero there. (Now I wonder if I should have really paid the dealership $250,000 for my Prius.)
Thanks, guys. Thanks, David. I'll check into Film Effects. -
Photos not showing in media viewer
Hi.. I am using iweb 09 to build my website.
However I cant view my photos that I have in Aperture, in the media viewer in iweb.
I only have the one Aperture project on my laptop, and all of the non-edited... and edited photos within that project don't show in the media viewer in iweb... So I cant drag the pictures I would like to include on my website from the media viewer.
I tried closing iweb and deleting the plist in my home folder but no difference. i un-stacked all the photos in Aperture to see if they would show up.. no luck either.
Can anyone suggest anything please... All my updates are up to speed..
Thanks..... Gerrywindhoveruk wrote:

Hi Waren
Adding to Tulse's helpful suggestions...
I recently created my first Keynote. Before using the application I watched the short videos from this Apple Keynote Tutorial. This short time investment helped me immensely. Saved a lot of time.
Images: you will have to import your photos into iPhoto or Aperture, as Keynotes Media Browser accesses your images from those sources. And, as Tulse suggested keep images at or smaller than 1024x768. Otherwise you may experience lag time.
When I prepare images for Keynote, I first alter them in Photoshop as PSD files using a minimum of 240 dpi. When saving, I change the DPI to 150 dpi (probably can get away with 72 dpi, however I bumped it a bit just to be safe). Then, I save as a JPG using the maximum quality setting (12). Image size is usually around 350K. Then, I open iPhoto (or Aperture) and import the images (shift/command/I keys is the iPhoto shortcut). I haven't had any problems with artifacts, however, if you do, then I also second TIFF as the alternative.
Also, make sure you are creating the keynote presentation on the same machine you'll use to run Keynote. On the MacBook Pro in Keynote, you'll set the Keynote size via the Inspector>Document panel to match your machine's monitor display size. In your case, select the Custom option and set it to 1440x900.
Lastly, always best to have at least one dry run, ideally on screen. Keynote has great transitions. The tutorial provides some good suggestions about how to use them effectively to keep your audiences attention.
Good luck -
Hello there,
The title of the discussion is the very last of issues I've had with Aperture, which until this point I was able to solve by reading Discussions started by others. The short version of my story:
dropped my Macbook on concrete floor with no immediate signs of damage
(a few days later) decided to sync photos onto iPad 2 with iTunes
saw that iTunes couldn't sync any photos from Aperture; looked at MEDIA section in Finder for Aperture library, which did not display anything in it
thought I should open up Aperture itself to see what's going on
Aperture began to crash upon loading
thought that restarting the machine would make the bug go awayrestarting the machine failed due to HARD DRIVE FAILURE (according to Disk Utility and SuperDuper!)
bought a new, bigger drive, fixed permissions and copied everything over with SuperDuper! without any errors
Macbook booted fine this time, but Aperture kept crashing
what didn't help: 32-bit mode open; deleting serialization file; all three rebuild options when starting aperture in Command-Option-click fashion; re-installing the appliaction and the recent updates
what helped: turning off AirPort allowed the application to open; however turning on AirPort AFTER it opened made it crash again within minutes
what helped 2.0: deleting the .plist Aperture file from ~/Library/Preferences
at last Aperture booted with AirPort being ON and generally stopped crashing, but now Flickr and Facebook webalbums were gonesinged in to Flickr from within Aperture and the webalbums came back
BUT every attempt to sign in to Facebook from within Aperture led to Aperture crashing -> happens regardless of what username/password I put in
Now the weird part - when I open a Firefox/Chrome dialog window, go to MEDIA section and select Aperture library, the Flickr and Facebook webalbums ARE VISIBLE and HAVE photos in them. So, FINDER can see Flickr and Facebook webalbums, but Aperture cannot. Moreover, it keeps crashing everytime I attempt to give Aperture my Facebook credentials. HOW DO I FIX THIS?
Please help - this has been driving me insane for far too long now
Aleksey
p.s. I have all the latest OS X and Aperture updates installed.Hi Owen,
Here is the crash log. As per removing the account from Aperture>Preferences>Web - it isn't there to be removed. In fact, trying to add a facebook account there also causes Aperture to crash.
