Aperture 2.0, Leopard, or Me?

Old set up: Aperture 1.5, 3-networked (gigabit) computers: 2xG5, 1xMBP, all running Tiger; Aperture libraries on external SATA drive connected to one of the G5 towers. Any computer could access an Aperture Library via the network connection. Under Tiger, you just mounted the drive and away you go. Slowly trying to upgrade systems... did a clean install of Leopard on the MBP and installed Aperture 2.0 on one tower (still running Tiger) and the MBP. Now the MBP can't access the Aperture library via the gigabit home network (I turned off Airport to be sure I was hardwired). Is this a Leopard issue or a Aperture 2.0 issue? I REALLY need to get this to work. As in my tow choices are this either works so my wife can work from upstairs or I find an Aperture alternative.... I simply can't maintain two libraries/drive systems for every project, that's absurd. Not to mention cost prohibitive. BTW- all folders are set to read/write access.
Mike

I agree with everything the original poster in that thread mentioned. How utterly absurd to think that you are going to manage tens of thousands of images yet only want to access them via one computer. That isn't image management. And why is it that FCP allows you to access files via a network (Final Cut Server) and Apple can't figure out how to let Aperture do that? Or rather, took that functionality away from us with v2.0. And as far as stability went, we have been using Aperture 1.5 since it's release on our home network without ever having an issue. We are competent enough not to open the same library at the same time on two different computers.
Sorry for my rant but I have spent considerable time developing our workflow and now I am left with no other option than to go back to Aperture 1.5 and review my future (multiple workstations involved) options. This has put me in a foul mood. I did see a suggestion to use reference images but I don't see how that helps me with image management. Example: we have a wedding post-consultation. WIth Aperture v1.5 I pull up the library from our MBP which is connected to our 50", 1080p Sony TV. Client can see everything in 50" glory (they love this despite the fact it isn't color calibrated). We can go through an entire wedding shoot and the client can tell me which images they like and I can 1-star them. We can make a second pass of the 1-stars and give higher star ratings and these can all go into an album "Client Favorites". I can use this for slideshows, as a reference of favorite images for album design and so on. But now, if I use a reference library... that library isn't connected to the main library which is to say that all the ratings are lost when I open the managed library from the main computer. Yep, foul mood.
Sorry,
Mike

  • Can't open Aperture after Snow Leopard to Mavericks upgrade.

Upgraded to Mavericks from Snow Leopard. Now, the Aperture icon in the dock is greyed out. When I try to open it I get the message that I have Aperture 3.2.4 and it can't be opened with Mavericks. I purchased Aperture from the App Store when I had Snow Leopard and it shows in my purchases list, but when I check for available updates nothing shows. I have US English in my preferences, and Aperture is in my Applications file. I tried to update Aperture with 3.4.4 as an interim step from the Apple website, but got the message that I had to update from the App Store.
    Any help appreciated.
    Russ

Could there be anything interfering with the App Store connecting to Apple's servers? Firewall, antivirus filters? Any problems with your AppleID? Credit card expired, the answers to your security questions too short, an too simple password?
In some cases it will help, to boot into Safe Mode before connecting to the AppStore. Try to load the updates page while booted into Safe mode, see:  Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode

  • Aperture and Snow Leopard problems

I have multiple issues with Aperture after upgrading to SL (currently on 10.6.2). The major issues are:
    (1) Whenever I import new images or make modification to existing images Aperture does not quit anymore. Command quit doesn't do anything and I have to force quit in order to exit program.
    (2) After importing new files, often not all images are shown in the project or album (although all images have been imported and the tooltip shows the correct number of images in the project/album). Furthermore, keywords searches do not work. A force quit and reopening solves this problem.
    (2) When saving or opening images the dialog box does not work properly and some folders are overlayed with black/grey boxes and things look corrupted.
Obviously, I have installed 2.1.4 and I do not have Aperture in any subfolder (it is directly in the app folder). Furthermore, I have deleted the preferences file (com.apple.Aperture.plist) but this did not help.
What to do next? Re-install Aperture? If I have to do this what docs do I have to delete and how can I avoid loosing any important information? I have a very large image library with many adjustments, keywords, rankings etc and I definitely do not want to loose any of that information. Thanks much for your help and advise.

I decided to backup up everything. I then erased the HD and reinstalled Leopard Disk 1 and 2. Did all the system updates and added all the optional software on the disks. Then installed Snow Leopard. Then installed Aperture and all updates including 2.1.4 and my printer drivers. Then followed with all my other apps like MS Office and Quicken.
    Took about 2 hours.
Everything works perfectly and is quite snappy including Aperture. No problems with any of the Aperture functions.
It's a lot of work but its easy to do if you have other things to do while the software is installing.
If you are up to all that and dont mind the time, you'll be happy plus you now have a clean, fresh disk.

  • Help with setting up Aperture on Snow Leopard

I have two late 2006 White Core 2 Duo iMacs no longer under warranty. My cameras are 2 Nikon D70's. My printer is an Epson 7600.
I installed Leopard on one of the iMacs and it broke within a week of the upgrade. Our homeowners insurance may repair it ... Shipped it today and waiting for diagnosis. (Rural, no Apple Store)
I want to install Snow Leopard on the other one but I am terrified! Is my machine really up to the task? I know that it is; based on the specs but does anyone have experiences with it? My Aperture Library houses my most precious data.
•Can I install it on an external hard drive and test it with my Aperture Library and then go back to Tiger if it has problems re-booting or starts running too hot?
I want this to be a joyful experience but this is the 3rd mac that has failed me since 2003 and frankly I am scared. 15" PowerBook, iMac G5, Intel iMac.
I have External Hard Drives that are from OWC. I have two 1TB and one 1.5TB and they are FW800 + eSATA. My computer does not have a place to plug in the eSATA cords so I am using the FW800 ones. Should I consider a RAID 5 for redundancy given my luck? I also have five 500GB Mercury Elite drives but they're FW400 only.
•Can one of those be used for speed (RAID 0)? They're empty but maybe too slow.
    • If they replace rather than repair the iMac; can you recommend a more robust machine with near equal value? MBP (refurb). I'd need a matte screen or an anti-glare cover.
    Any assistance would be appreciated.

We don't know what the graphics card is on your iMac, but my expectation is that the iMac should not be particularly limiting to low end use of Snow Leopard, except a bit for the graphics. However the iMac graphics will be limiting to Aperture, as also will be the limited RAM. The described iMac setup will never be a high end Aperture box but with maximum RAM should be ok as a low end Aperture box.
My Aperture Library houses my most precious data.
The iMac itself is no risk to precious data. IMO your data (originals) should be Referenced Masters housed on external hard drives and backed up off site separately but along with Vaults of the Aperture Library. Aperture's default "Managed Masters" Library usually is a very bad idea for iMacs and laptops. I do wish Apple would change the IMO inappropriate default protocol.
Can I install it on an external hard drive and test it with my Aperture Library and then go back to Tiger if it has problems re-booting or starts running too hot?
Better is to install Aperture, the Aperture Library and other apps on the iMac internal drive and keep the internal drive less than 60% full by using Referenced Masters housed on external hard drives. Make two different Vaults on two different hard drives and test rebuilding from the Vault. Then if the Snow Leopard install does not work well you can wipe the iMac drive and start over. However I think that SL should be OK on the iMac, it works fine with Aperture on my 2006 2.33 GHz MBP with 3 GB RAM.
I want this to be a joyful experience but this is the 3rd mac that has failed me since 2003 and frankly I am scared. 15" PowerBook, iMac G5, Intel iMac.
Computers and especially drives of any brand always do fail. Establish the right setup and routine backup and failures become not so terrifying.
I have External Hard Drives that are from OWC. I have two 1TB and one 1.5TB and they are FW800 + eSATA. My computer does not have a place to plug in the eSATA cords so I am using the FW800 ones. Should I consider a RAID 5 for redundancy given my luck?
No to RAID but yes yes yes to redundancy . With images we have no need for expensive real-time backup, and iMacs are unsuited to RAID anyway. What we need with images is immediate backup of our originals (such as simple copying to external drives) and routine daily/weekly backup of originals (via Finder-copy) and the Aperture Library (via Vaults) both on and off site. That is easy enough to do with the drives you have now.
Can one of those be used for speed (RAID 0)?
No. RAID 0 is great for images work but you would need a tower or an elaborate eSATA configuration. Note that RAID 0 requires a minimum of two drives for the RAID plus backup drives.
If they replace rather than repair the iMac; can you recommend a more robust machine with near equal value? MBP (refurb). I'd need a matte screen or an anti-glare cover.
An MBP would have substantially more cost and value. iMacs all have only the (IMO undesirable) glossy displays. A latest-generation Mini would meet your described needs, or an iMac plus an external matte display.
    Good luck!

  • Transfer photos from iphoto to Aperture with snow leopard, how?

    hi all
how can i transfer photos from iphoto (in power book G5) To Aperture ( in MacBook Pro 17" with snow leopard), with same albums arrangement???? thanks

    yi1gaka wrote:
1- the size of iphoto library is 6GB, but in aperture its 11GB, y?
I think it's because you have the original images plus copies with any adjustments you made in iPhoto. It could also have to do with Aperture generating Previews.
2- now to copy the another iphoto library from the second old machine, i will replace its library with the iphoto library of new machine then copy it in aperture library, and after that i can delete the iphoto library to save hard space. is that correct? thanks
Just make sure you keep the copies on the old machines until you've backed up your new Aperture Library and made sure that everything is there. IMPORTANT: make sure that you chose to copy the images into your Aperture Library instead of keeping them in their current location. If you left them in the iPhoto Library and you delete that library, you delete your images!

  • Aperture and Snow Leopard

I've played around with the new Aperture 2.1.4 a bit after installing Snow Leopard and it does appear to be running somewhat better than pre-Snow. But no real work done yet, such as lots of image editing or importing a ton of new images.
Activity Monitor reports Aperture running at around 100% most of the time, even when doing absolutely nothing including nothing reported in the Activity window (this is not an improvement). But then, suddenly it will drop to 0.2% and stay there. Strange.
On the other hand, if I click a blue folder with three projects containing a total of 1900 5D RAW images then hold down an arrow key and step through them with the viewer on (and Quick Preview turned OFF !) every image is displayed with not a single ange or spinning beach ball of death. CPU hovers around 75% peaking once to 150%. That, in my experience, is a remarkable improvement.
Also I took a look at the Inspector in Activity Monitor while doing this not a single page fault is being reported. In the past (eg this past Monday) I would always see page faults incrementing by dozens per interval when ever looked.
It could be that Snow cleaned up some old 3rd party OS junk (not sure) or that Aperture 2.1.4 and Snow have learned that Aperture doesn't have an infinite amount of RAM to page in and out from virtual storage.
So far, it looks like Snow and 2.1.4 are going to make my editing a lot less stressful. I used to leave the machine for minutes a a time while Aperture was hung.
    -Irwin

I'm already on version 2.1.4. I've tried repairing permissions, and rebuilding library, and am going to attempt reinstalling now.

  • Aperture 3, Snow Leopard, iMac ATI Radeon X1600 and graphics issues

I have been searching the web to see if 10.6.4 has finally solved the graphics issues with the white iMac 2.16 intel with the ATI Radeon X1600 graphics processors and seen some mixed reviews. What is the consensus here, has 10.6.4 finally solved the graphics issues when editing photos in Aperture 3 (not to mention problems with iPhoto and iChat also). I had to downgrade to Leopard before so I don't want to upgrade to SL again and go back down the downgrade path. Thanks in advance for the feedback

I can say that 10.6.4 has worked out the kinks for my white 24" iMac with 7300GT card. From what others have posted here, it appears the x1600 issues have been resolved as well. I was running 10.6.2 prior to this update and advising everyone else of same. Of course, 10.6.2 and SL was not perfect, with some issues cropping up here and there. IMHO the 10.6.4 release is equivalent to the 10.5.3 release by comparison. In fact, I upgraded my Mac mini after my good experiences with 10.6.4 on my iMac. Not sure if this helps or not.

  • Preview and Pictures lost in my Aperture library after Leopard Upgrade :(((

    Hi,
So I was using Aperture 1.5.5 on Tiger 10.4.10 with bench of folders and pictures in it. I backup my Aperture Library file, and then reinstalled my whole system with Leopard, then reinstalled Aperture from original CD, then did the upgrade to 1.5.6 and then put back my Aperture Library from my backup.
Then I start Aperture and begin of bad surprises When I click on a picture, it displays just one instant the preview of it, then I got a marroon background with and text that says (I translate as it's in french on my computer): Picture format not managed !! What does it mean ?? all these pictures opened smoothly with previous version of Aperture on TIger !!!
If I do a right click on that, picture displays correctly !!!!
Also something bad, I have some folders which contained bunch of pictures where I can see in list on left correct number of pictures, but when I select it, it looks empty (I have checked by hand in Aperture Library files and pictures are still there !!
What's wrong ? I must confess I'm pretty disappointed by how Apple manage migration to Leopard of that program where update to make it fully Leopard compatible is released just day of release of Leopard
    Thanks for your help
    Vincèn

    Vincèn,
have you double-checked that Aperture uses the correct library (in Preferences) ?
Did you try pulling the Aperture prefs over from your backup also ?
And did you try a rebuild (depressing Cmd and Option during Aperture startup until the message comes up, choose Rebuild now, get a Coffee).
    Note:
Even if all your images are referenced it's a good idea to use a Vault, as it backs up the structure (not the referenced images, of course).
Also ranting doesn't help getting answers. Asking a straight question is best, OK ?
I, like you, did a clean install and everything works just fine (everything, nor just Aperture).

  • May I install Aperture 3 on Leopard?

    Hi all
I have recently purchased Aperture 3 from App Store using my home iMac with Lion.
As I am often away for work, I would like to install Aperture on my MB Pro, too. It has Leopard installed, so App Store is not available there.
Any suggestion will be much appreciated.
    Thanks in advance
    Rosario Manzo, IT

    Hello Rosario,
if you recently bought Aperture, you probably have version 3.2.3.
This requiresMacOS 10.6.8 or 10.7.2 or later, see the Tech specs http://www.apple.com/aperture/specs/
Only earlier Aperture 3 versions would run on Leopard, e.g. Aperture 3.1.1, see http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1315
But I have no idea how to obtain an installer for an earlier version now, sorry.
    Regards
    Léonie

  • Aperture under snow leopard adjustments greyed

After upgrading to snow leopard I was not able to upgrade aperture to 2.1.4. The error message said I would need Aperture 2, however, Aperture 2.1.2 is the installed version. As a workaround I installed the 2.1.4 trial version. This allowed me to make adjustments. Now I have updated snow leopard (10.6.2). Making adjustments to pictures is not possible anymore, the adjustments content is greyed, This is so annoying!! Has anybody out there an idea what causes the problem and how I can it be resolved???

    Dear Ian
I had sleepless nights, you solved it!!! I thought much too complicated...
    Many, many thanks for this

  • Aperture for snow leopard

    Hiya,
I'm considering getting Aperture or Lightroom.  I use snow leopard and have currently no inclination to get lion.  I see the latest and greatest aperture 3.3.1 is available _only_ for lion.  Is it possible to purchase a version for snow leopard?
I found this discussion on getting 3.2.4 by downloading the trial and such, but is this necessary?  Calling apple support and begging for an activation serial code for the trial?
If apple doesn't want my money perhaps I should just get lightroom - any input on this folks?
    thanks!
    shawn

For Snow Leopard, you could do the following if Amazon will ship to your location:
Order Aperture 3 retail DVD from here:
    http://www.amazon.com/Apple-MB957Z-A-Aperture-3/dp/B002I0JKSS
Download the Aperture 3.2.4 update from here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1538
This would give you the highest update level compatible with Snow Leopard. This would give you the ability to reinstall at any time on Snow Leopard as well (the EULA allows installation on 2 computers as long as only one instance is running in RAM at a time).
Note - the unified library feature and new 'Skin Tone' white balance is not part of 3.2.4, but Lightroom doesn't have a 'Skin Tone' white balance either.

  • Some images created in Tiger unusable under Leopard - can crash Aperture

I have tried both updates and clean installs of Leopard on my MBP and external firewire disks. In both cases I find that a large number of images in my libraries (built under Tiger), give Aperture fits. For example, whilst I can see thumbnails, I can't export versions - messages come up to say the images can't be decoded. Similarly, if I try to edit or view some images full screen, I get a message saying "unsupported format". At times, trying to work with these images crashes Aperture.
In a couple of cases, I still have the offending images on cards and I was then able to import them anew into Aperture (running under Leopard) - these work OK.
Boinx Fotomagico under Leopard stopped running and quit without warning trying to run previously created slideshows that incorporate some of the above-mentioned images.
I conclude that there is a problem with Leopard's treatment of images rather than Aperture specifically. However, I have no clue how to address the problem. At present Leopard is just unusable for me.

I'm aware of anomalies when using Numbers under Leopard.
Maybe you met one which I ignored.
Knowing such of these problems, I decided to use Tiger as my main operating system.
Here, as I play safety, Leopard is always in test, not in real use.

  • Snow Leopard iMac 27" Aperture Problem

Aperture refuses to imports some jpg and CR2 images, imports others. Provides no explanation other than "Aperture did not import ..." All taken same time (within seconds) on same camera. Other problems with video card which is approved for replacement. Pictures imported into Aperture without a problem on MacBook Pro using same version of Aperture but only Leopard. Any comments, ideas?

Here is a site that comes up with the boxed "A". http://appletoolbox.com/
I'm pretty sure the site isn't a problem as it comes up fine on my iPhone, iPad, MacBook Pro & Mac Pro. Since my daughter's iMac is only a couple of weeks old, I thought there might be a setting or preference that is at fault.

  • Printing with Leopard and Aperture?

Has anyone tried to print via Aperture after the Leopard upgrade and the Aperture 1.5.6 update? I just want to make sure my HP B9180 will still work after the install! Many thanks to the brave who have run the updates already and can provide insight for the rest of us!!!

    Fangirl-
Regarding "I am encouraged also by your ability to upgrade without doing an archive and install" I cannot state too strongly that IMO simply "migrating" to a new OS version, especially a huge evolution like OS 10.5, is a very bad idea even though it often superficially "works."
http://macfixit.com/ has pages of useful commentary that everyone should read every word of prior to installing OS 10.5, including:
In an article a few days ago, we mentioned that "For most users, a basic upgrade [where the installer merges Leopard directly with your existing files] will suffice". But that doesn't mean we recommend it. We don't. In fact, there is a school of thought that says you should never, never, never do a "basic upgrade" installation - that such an installation is, indeed, the root of all evil. Not only do you inherit a lot of old stuff that may be incompatible, but the algorithm whereby the installer "merges" your existing system with the new one is not reliable. The majority of troubles reported in MacFixIt may well stem from having done this sort of installation."
The emphases in the quote above are mine, because I strongly believe that one should never do a "basic upgrade" installation for the the reasons noted.
I have lots more commentary but the MacFixit pages are more comprehensive.
Good luck with the upgrade! Note that although I am adamant about care when udating I am not suggesting that everyone should postpone updating. I will not upgrade this week or next, but probably will update at least my laptop long before a 10.5.1 version comes out.

  • Crash while trying to export on Leopard (New bug)

Note that this bug seems to be slightly different then the bug referenced in the post "Aperture 1.5.6 Crashing with Leopard". In my case, just selecting "Export > Export Version" from either the "File" menu or the contextual menu causes Aperture to crash. The Export dialog never gets displayed. The stack crawl is also slightly different then the one shown in the above mentioned post.
This is the first time I've used Aperture since installing Leopard a few weeks ago. My Leopard installing was an "Archive and Install" one, and I've since picked up the 10.5.1 update. I've run "Repair Permissions" as well as deleted my old Aperture preferences from ~/Library, but the crash persists. A crash report has been submitted as well.
As it stands, I cannot export any photos at all from within Aperture. This goes for both managed photos as well as referenced photos. Any help would be appreciated.

    (End Crash Log)

I have the exact same problem as you describe above, and from the beginning i also think it's a bug cause by leopard update, but I was wrong, the solution is both simple and crazy, you just need to remove any 3rd party "color picker" plug-in that was not compatible with Leopard from ~/Library/ColorPickers, then you are set to go, mine was the "Tangerine" plug-in that i was forget to put in trash after I uninstall the main program. After I remove it, no crash on exporting to version or to mail, hoooolaaa.
I'm both frustrating and sad when I cannot export my image from Aperture, and I'm not sure what the connection between color picker and Aperture "export" feature, but it's finally solve my problem, this of course with the help of this post. Cheer, and by the way, I have upgraded to Aperture 2.0, woo lala, what a great software update Apple had provide after such a long wait.
