Aperture 2.0 & Printing

As many readers of the this forum know, the previous version of Aperture, for many of us had significant issues in the quality of prints.
Has anyone tried to print some pics with Aperture 2.0?
How good did they turn out?

I have printed some RAW pictures from the trial because my camera RAW (Canon PowerShot G9) wasn't supported in 1.5.6 and I liked some of the RAW test pictures that I took.
Compared to Aperture 1.5.6 which has a ton of settings, 2.0 is simplified. You choose which printer, then the settings has a quality & media mode which you can select which type of paper and the print quality.
The border cropping and etcetera are the same as 1.5.6
The actual prints looked very nice, just like what I was looking at on my screen, so I was very pleased with them.
It is simple to set it up once, save it as a preset and then select it any time you want to print pictures

This is determined by your printer, and the print profile you use.  It is not determined by Aperture.  Consult your printer documentation for information of what thicknesses of paper are suitable, and how to use them.

  • Aperture won't print to fill page!?!

I had followed a couple threads on this topic and have come to a very aggrivating conclusion:
Aperture printing will NOT let you set the border size smaller than the LARGEST print border your printer has. So my Epson printer which can print to within 0.12" within all edges except the bottom, which can only go to 0.56", is FORCED to print within 0.56" along EVERY EDGE.
The result: I can't even print an 8x10 within Aperture because it forces me to have even borders.
I can't believe it. This MUST be FIXED.

Very odd, there was a problem with this a few versions ago (I think even 1.0) but printing on my R800 allows me to adjust the border as low as .13 inches.
I suppose one possiblity might be that you need to reload the printer drivers...
On a side note, since you have an r1800 make sure you have the latest icc profiles possible, using the ones here:
    http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/EditorialAnnouncement.jsp?BV_UseBVCookie=yes& oid=59082650
For the r800 the premium profiles are here:
    http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/EditorialAnnouncement.jsp?oid=51716719
I just thought I'd bring that up since I had a rough time finding where to download the icc profiles alone for Epson.

  • DPI and PPI in Aperture 'Export' and 'Print' windows

    Hi,
As mentioned in an earlier post, I just bought an Epson 3880 printer and some Epson Hot Press paper, so now I have to pay attention to PPI (term used for displays) and DPI (term  used for printers).
In Aperture however, files being exported require DPI specs(!), while files being printed require that we specify PPI specs. How is that?
Also, my Epson manual indicates that I can print at 5 distinct "DPI" settings, from 180 to 2880. My Aperture Print window, however, only offers 3 options with 360 "PPI" as the highest (considered Draft quality by Epson - if "DPI"), plus a 4th referred to as Custom.
Also, I have a note jotted down a while back that says: "1440 dpi for most papers with 240 dpi files, at 2880 if 360" - whatever that meant 6 months ago at an Epson 3880 seminar, before I got the printer.
Can you guys sort this out for me? Please?
    Thanks a lot,
    Raphael

I'm not at my studio.  My current driver is 8.x.  The newest driver is 9.33.  My remarks here may not fit with your more current version of the driver (but that would surprise me — the printer came out about 4 years ago, iirc).
The profiles are not, afaik, included with the driver, at least when you download it from Epson's site.
There are two profiles for each Epson Fine Art paper — one at 1440 and one at 2880.  You should try each with every kind of print you make, and determine which is better.  IME, _for my needs_, 2880 was never worse.  I use the 2880 profiles.
The profile is selected from the "Color Profile" drop-down at the top of the "Rendering" section of Aperture's "Print" dialog.
(Set "Render Intent" to "Perceptual" for, in general, photographs or anything with smoothly graduated changes in color.  Set "Render Intent" to "Relative Colorimetric" for, in general, graphics or anything with smooth areas of constant color and sharp transitions between areas of color.  Generally, if "Render Intent" is "Perceptual", check "Black Point Compensation"; otherwise uncheck it.)
Leave "Print Resolution" at "Auto".  I know of no reason to ever change this.  (I don't, in fact, know what this control does, and have never changed it.)
When you click "Print" in Aperture's "Print" dialog, a short dialog opens asking you if you want to save any changes you made to your Preset.  I always save my changes.  Prints often need to be immediately remade — all transitions of data from electronic to physical media are problematic — and I like to return to my Preset ready to print the same Image(s) again.
When that dialog closes, the OS print dialog opens.  Your 3880 printer should already be selected in the "Printer" drop-down.  You need to create and should save an OS Preset for your paper.  Note that on the "Color Matching" page (this dialog has pages, not tabs; direct complaints to Cupertino), all (two) options should be grayed-out.  This indicates that Aperture is handling color matching, which is what you want (for best prints and anything approaching a color-calibrated workflow).  On the "Paper Handling" page, the "Destination Paper Size" drop-down is grayed-out, but should show you the selection you made in the Aperture Print dialog.  The "Printer Settings" page has two tabs.  On the "Basic" tab, in the "Media Type" drop-down, select your paper ("Fine Art Paper ▹ Hot Press [Bright or Natural])*.  The "Ink" drop-down should be grayed-out, but show "Matte".  Matte is proper selection for Hot Press [Bright or Natural].  This dialog knows this from your color profile selection in the Aperture Print dialog.  Chose "16-bit" output and any other options your want (you can experiment; I find no difference).  I ignore the warning about print quality at the bottom area — this has never been an issue.  On the "Advanced" tab of the "Printer Settings" page, it should tell you that "Epson Driver Color Management is Off".  That's what you want.  You want Aperture to manage the color.
Save your OS print dialog Preset.  Use it every time you print to the same paper.
*If you cannot select your paper, you have not selected the correct paper size in the "Printer" section of Aperture's Print dialog.  Note that the "Paper Size" selection includes not only the paper size, but also whether the feed is by sheet-feeder or manual, and whether or not the print is borderless.  (I didn't design this; I assume there are reasons to have shoe-horned these options into the "Paper Size" selection.
This is all tricky on top of being actually complex and next to being new.  It takes everyone time and mistakes (read: ink and paper) to canalize a flow that works for producing the prints they want.  I hope this gets you there a little faster.  Report back with what doesn't work.

  • How to get black text in Aperture for offset printing?

I have a lot of text in my Aperture Books.
60 pages is like 300USD plus from Apple store!
Offset printing for 1000 copies is 3 USD each (and I am happy with that lower quality).
This is what my printer says:
The files for offset print generally should be prepared slightly different
    then for digital printing.
    I'm talking about the text.
Each black text (on the cover, inside pages, numbers of pages) should be
prepared in one black colour. Now is separated on 4 colours. Of course we can print it as it is but I'm sure that the final effect will
be not good. The black letters will be "fuzzy".
Is it possible to change some settings? (I get the same in Pages when I create PDF:s)

    Hi, Stefan
I would suggest talking directly with the person you're going to deliver to and ask them exactly how they want it delivered, for example, fonts, pdf type... they usually have a spec sheet you deliver to and then pick the PDF from the print options in Aperture.

  • Aperture freezes on print dialog

I've noticed a reproducible problem with printing. When I call up the Print Image command from the File menu, I'm presented with the Aperture print dialog. If I then click on Print, it calls up the print dialog for my Epson Photo Stylus R3000 printer (the latest version 9.04). If I click Print to complete the process, the printing goes through fine. However, if I cancel printing on the last dialog, the first Aperture print dialog is shown and is not dismissed. Problem is, clicking anywhere on it does nothing and there is no way to manually dismiss it. It's unresponsive. Aperture is effectively frozen and has to be force quit. It seems to happen only with the Epson driver. When I tried the same with an HP LaserJet printer, it cancelled fine. Not sure whether it's a bug with Aperture or with the Epson driver, but the R3000 is a printer that should definitely work with Aperture.

Have you installed the latest driver updates for your version of MacOS, and looked at the Epson site, if there are more current versions of your printer driver?

  • Aperture does not print

I am seeking help figuring out if the problem is with the Canon printer manager for a IPF6300 large format printer. The printer works fine using their Digital Photo Professional software. It is a networked connection and I know it has a valid ip address, and their setup software detected and installed the printer in the system preferences option for printers. It is set to default. What happens(actually in iphoto, preview, and Lightroom2) is the canon printer manager will pop up. The light blinks green on the printer for an instant, and then it is like the print spool job goes out to dev >null. In my exprience Canon will more than likely try to blame it on Apple software so I am attempting to validate any known issues between this printer and Aperture 3 trial.
    Thanks

As an avid user of both Aperture and Sony cameras & lenses, I share your frustration.  Just wait.  Apple has been good about providing updates to their camera RAW converter.  They haven't missed a Sony camera yet (afaik).

  • Using Aperture 3 and printing photos, is it best to export the photo CMYK as a TIFF?

Using Aperture 3 and CMYK when printing photos, is it best to export as a TIFF and if so as bit 8 or bit 16? Thanks!

    Yes.  16-bit TIFF.

  • FOUND A FIX for Aperture/iLife '08 printing (aperture w/ new books, etc)

Albeit a temporary fix... here it is.
You'll need iLife '08 and a PDF viewer from which you can save jpgs or tiffs at or greater than 200dpi, 300dpi preferred.
I created a book in Aperture, exported it as a PDF through the print function, then opened it in Acrobat Professional (not your only choice for PDF software though), re-saved the PDF as JPEGs, and then imported them into iPhoto '08. Once in, I created a completely blank book and used the JPEGs as background images. Now you have an exact duplicate of the page layout from Aperture, that you were able to custom design and manipulate, in a fancy new iLife '08 book.
Lord knows I'll probably get burned in a few weeks when 1.5.5 comes out and fixes the issue, since I had to go out and buy iLife, but for now I can produce quality books for my clients and still use Aperture.
    cheers,
    Sean

Many people will turn off "Maintain Previews for this project" to improve performance. You can still have previews and share them with iLife, by generating them on command, using "Update Previews for this project". Make sure you have preview sharing turned on in preferences.

  • Aperture, Display and Printer Color Match/Profile Calibration ?

I need to calibrate my HP Photosmart Plus B209a-m Printer to match what I see on my Acer X223w 22 inch display when using Aperture 3 and Photoshop CS5
The colors are pretty close to matching but each photo I print comes out deeper in color ( shadows and highlights are off )
I have the Acer display Color Profile set to Adobe RGB 1998, All photos shot with my Nikon D5000 in RAW format and Color Profile Adobe RGB 1998,
Aperture 3.03 Proofing Profile Adobe RGB 1998 and when I print a photo I set HP Color Matching / ColorSync to Adobe RGB 1998
I've been using Canon Photo Paper Plus Glossy II PP-201 for prints but can't find a profile for it to add to my HP Printer.
If I did find a profile how would I install it so it would show up in the drop down list of paper types ?

Well I'm pretty amazed that the prints are just slightly off, with all the things you're doing wrong in color management.
First off, you don't seem to know the difference between a device profile and a working space (i.e. 'synthetic' profiles), since you assigned AdobeRGB to both your monitor and printer. You should profile your printer and display with special hardware, like the X-Rite Colormunki. This will generate a profile, that will translate how color should look theoretically (by the assigned working space e.g. AdobeRGB), to how they will look on the hardware.
Secondly, RAW-images do not have a color profile! The setting in the camera only applies to in-camera JPEGs. RAW files only contain the voltages the CCD measured, this has to be translated into in image later.
Thirdly, softproofing in AdobeRGB almost never makes any sense. It doesn't make any sense if your are softproofing in AdobeRGB if you want to match screen to print. Your softproofing profile should be the profile that is specific for your printer and paper combination. The only synthetic profile that makes sense to softproof to is sRGB, since that is the colorspace used on the web. And even that is disputable since 99.9% of web user do not have a calibrated/profiled monitor.
Fourthly, Adding a color profile will not add a paper type to the drop down list in the printer driver. These are hard-coded in the printer driver and basically determine the amount of ink being placed on the paper.
So I'd suggest at this point to fetch yourself a copy of 'Real World Color Management' by Bruce Fraser (ISBN 9780321267221) and read it from the front to the back before you again embark on the path of color management.

  • Aperture 3 Cant print or export

  • How do you convert to cmyk in aperture 3 for printing business cards?

I'm wanting to make my own business cards and post cards online.  The printing companies want cmyk files.  How do I convert my photo files and pages files to cmyk?  I do not use Photoshop, only Aperture 3.5.1.
Please keep it simple.  I'm an old dinosaur and could be your next tank of gas!
    Thanks

You will need some External Photo editor, and you can get to to invoke from with Aperture.  For the price and function, I can recommend GraphicConverter.  Check it out in the Mac App Store for $39.95.
Aperture will create a new master to send to GC, and in GC you click on Picture/Mode and choose CMYK.  Then simply click Save, and it will now be saved in the Aperture Library as CMYK.
Aperture can archive the CMYK, but not convert it.

  • Aperture 2.1 printing problem

I've just upgraded to Aperture 2 and now have a problem printing to my Epson Aculaser 2600 as although it previews ok it prints a black box. Previously there wasn't a problem with Aperture . Th latest upgrade to 2.1 hasn't resolved the problem either. Any ideas?

I have the same problem with my Aculaser. No solution as yet. I am able to print Thumbnails, and can print a photo in thumbnail mode by setting it to print only two images per page. Not really a solution I know. At this time I export my images to Photoshop for printing.

  • Aperture 2.1 - Prints Dark

I finally got to print by downloading latest printer driver for my Epson R380. However all the prints come out darker than the preview screen. Never had this problem with Aperture 1 and can't seem to correct the problem. Anybody have a solution?

Typically, when I've seen this it is because you have not calibrated your computer. A laptop is not ideal to say the least for luminance issues because you can tilt the screen and get different appearances. Set the screen to a specific angle, and calibrate, or if you dont' have calibration hardware, just darken your screen a few notches. My Mac Pro 23" Apple display is very dark when I calibrate it, but the prints match.

  • Aperture 2 and printing photos top & bottom margins

    Hello,
Is it me or does Aperture 2 (Trial) missing the top & margin settings when printing a photo ?
What I mean is if it's possible to move the photo around vertically (top or bottom) and by seeing
    the dimension...like in Lightroom.
Ok, there are possibilites to decenter photos in 'Books' mode but I didn't find a ruler (neither for the dimensions of the photos and neither for the whole page) and that's not very practical.
    Thanks,
    gilles

I don't know specifically about any improvements regarding keywords from Aperture 1.5 to 2.0 but in Aperture 2.1 you are able to add and search hierarchical keywords structures.
One very important thing to know is that you ALWAYS have to add keywords to the hierarchical keyword structure in the keyword HUD BEFORE you apply them to your specific images.
Aperture is actually smart enough to distinguish between the same word used in different places in your keyword hierarchy. Here is an example. Let us say that you have created the following keyword hierarchy in your keyword HUD:
    /Wildlife/Bird/Duck/Male
    /Wildlife/Bird/Duck/Female
    /Wildlife/Kangaroo/Male
    /Wildlife/Kangaroo/Female
If you do a simple text search by typing the search word into the search field then:
If you search for "Wildlife" all your male and female ducks and kangaroos will show up.
If you search for "Bird" your male and female ducks will show up.
If you search for "Male" your male ducks and male kangaroos will show up.
But if you are looking for only your male ducks then you just open the keyword brick in the search HUD and here you will see that there are actually two different "Male" keywords. Just next to those two keywords the upper hierarchy keyword is listed in parentheses. You just check the one you want.
Again in order for this hierarchy structure to work then you must add new keywords in the keyword HUD before you add them to your images. All keywords you add to your images by typing directly into the keyword field in the metadata viewer will appear at the top level of your keyword hierarchy.
