Aperture 2.0 Tether & Canon

From Apple's PDF titled "Aperture 2 Product Overview" which you can view [here|http://images.apple.com/aperture/docs/Aperture2_ProductOverview.pdf]:
"The new Tether command in Aperture lets users of popular Nikon and Canon digital
SLRs tether their cameras to their Mac and capture images directly into Aperture,
without relying on third-party software or scripting."
Visiting Canon's [site|http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ProductCatIndexAct&fcate goryid=111] you'll note they currently offer 8 models of digital SLRs. Among their most popular are the 1D & 1Ds Mark III, 30D, and 40D. I see a huge number of 1D models at shoots and the 30D is everywhere. So far, in my own testing and in reviewing the posts on the forums, at least 4 of the 8 SLRs Canon sells don't work with tethering in Aperture 2. In fact, the only Canon SLR confirmed to work is the 20D. Given this, I wonder...
1. How can Apple say with a straight face that it supports the popular Canon SLRs.
2. Is everyone doing something wrong?
3. Why the heck hasn't Apple posted a supported camera list for a very sought after feature?

The problem appears to be Canon, not Apple, at least with the Mark III cameras.
I had posted this in another thread: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=6591135
The Canon 1Ds Mark III *does not work tethered* with Aperture. My own testing showed it and Apple confirmed it for me.
I think the issue is similar with the Canon 1D Mark III.
The issue lies with Canon... I've heard different reasoning for this (Canon putting some proprietary blocks in the way or Canon's SDK having some bugs that still need to be corrected). Hopefully, it's the SDK issue or a firmware issue that can be updated or corrected.
Canon 1DM3 and 1DsM3 users may have to contact Canon to put pressure on them to correct/change this, get them to open up the cameras to third-party tethering.
Apple will be putting out more information on this.

+Aperture 2 supports tethering directly, the camera maker's software and AppleScript are no longer required. Apple is preparing but has not yet published a knowledgebase article that will list the supported cameras, which is expected to include various Canon, Nikon and perhaps other digital SLR models, plus the iPhone.+

  • Aperture 2.0 and Canon XSi (450D)

Does anyone know if Aperture supports the new Canon XSi model? Or if there is a list of supported cameras for aperture? iPhoto keeps rejecting the CR2 file format from my XSi and I'm looking for software that I can edit my RAW images.
Thanks in advance for any input,
    Regards,
    -Steve

I don't know that it's necessarily any harder for Apple to support the XSi than any other camera.
Supporting RAW formats means carefully analyzing proprietary file formats and sensor products and modeling them to provide consistent results across many different formats. It's not is it merely hacking up a file -- you want those raw sliders to work as expected and deliver beautiful results.
Combine this with the fact that camera companies tend to release many new products all at the same time, and it's not a fast process.
By way of comparison: in late August 2006, Canon announced the XTi. Samples were available at Photokina in early September. I purchased one the day they came in, which was late September -- around the 24th or so. Full, flawless XTi support was added to the operating system (thus for both iPhoto and Aperture) in early November. That's a turn around of about 2 months from announcement to support, and of about a month and a half from release to support. I'd say we have another month or so to wait.
In the meantime, it's possible to use an external RAW converter, convert to DNG or 16 bit Tiff (I'd use Tiff if you have the space), add the converted files to Aperture and store them on disc/network along side the RAW originals. Then, once support is added, you can add your originals, stamp the changes you made to the converted versions to the originals, and then remove the conversions. Again, this is a workaround for a month or so, and is the price you pay for being on the bleeding edge.

I installed LR 4.2 so I could tether Canon 1 DX, but camera only reads BUSY.  Any suggestions?

    Hi,
Make sure you have installed the release version of Lightroom 4.2 @ www.adobe.com rather the Release Candidate; which is not final GM version.
You can download LR 4.2 release from following link.
    Windows:
    http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=5488
    Mac:
    http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=5487
Same problem has been reported on http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family/topics/canon_eos_1dx_will_not_tether
and installing the release version of LR has resolved the issue.
Please let me in case still facing same issue.

  • Help needed to tether Canon EOS T1i to IMac with Aperture

    Hello out there,
Will someone kindly help me IN BABY STEPS AND EASY-To-READ instructions how to (if it is even possible) how to:
Tether my Canon EOS Rebel T1i to my Imac that is using Aperture.
I tried to use the instructions in Aperture but nothing worked.
Thanks and have a nice day,
    Stacey Bindman (Mr.)
    Montreal, Quebec, Canada

Tethering is only supported on specific camera models. Tethering in Aperture doesn't work with the T1i. Apple implements it based on a standard which Canon only implemented on some cameras (and it seems like none of the new models support it).
You can get around this by using an Automator workflow downloadable here:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/automator/aperturehotfolder.html
You use the tethered shooting mode in the Canon EOS Utility to capture the photos to a folder and this workflow grabs any image that shows up in the folder and imports it into an Aperture project.
This gives you the functionality of tethering although the extra steps and workflow have a short delay before the image shows up.
Download the utility. Since it's really an Applescript / Automator workflow you might want to drop it into the "Applications" -> "AppleScript" folder on your Mac.
Since you wont want Aperture to auto-start and attempt an import when your camera is connected, you should probably start Aperture, select "Aperture" -> "Preferences..." -> "Import" then set the value of "When a camera is connected, open:" to "No Application" (meaning it wont attempt to do anything.) Close the Preferences window (no need to restart anything... the change takes effect immediately.)
Now you can connect your camera via the USB cord without fear that Aperture will try to grab control of it. Run the Canon "EOS Utility" (it's probably in the "Applications" -> "Canon Utilities" folder).
At the top, make sure "Control Camera" is selected, then below click on "Camera settings/Remote shooting".
You'll see a panel showing some camera settings, but up near the top, just below the battery icon is a field that shows the folder that it intends to put your images in as you shoot. To the right of this is a tiny folder icon. Click this and you can select the folder of your choice. I created a folder named "Tethered" inside my user account's "Pictures" folder (e.g. in my case it's /Users/tim/Pictures/Tethered )
NOW start the "Aperture Hot Folder" script (if you saved it where I suggested then it's in "Applications" -> "AppleScript" -> "Aperture Hot Folder")
The script will walk you through a few steps. First it will ask you to select the folder where your EOS Utility is saving the tethered shooting images. e.g. in my case this is the /Users/tim/Pictures/Tethered folder I mentioned earlier.
Next, it'll ask if you'd like to create a "New" project in Aperture or use an "Existing" project. The choice is yours. I happened to create a project named "Tethered" just for testing.
Lastly, it'll ask if you'd like the images to be imported as managed images (stored inside the Aperture Library) or referenced images (only meta-data is stored in the Aperture Library). "Managed" is easier because Aperture does the work, but "Referenced" offers you more control -- assuming you are willing to set up a scheme to organize your photos and manage them yourself.
It'll also explain how to end the "Hot Folder" session when you're finished (bring it to the foreground -- usually by just clicking it's icon down in the dock, then use the menu to select "Aperture Hot Folder" -> "Quit Aperture Hot Folder". You can then quit the EOS Utility to end your remote shooting session.)
With the EOS Utility, Aperture, and the Aperture Hot Folder script running, you can now start shooting and the images will (after a few seconds delay) show up in the Aperture project you selected earlier.

    Tim

  • Aperture 2.1.4 & Canon 7d RAW don't work

    Hi,
I have borrowed a Canon 7d to shoot an occasion, all the shots were in RAW, no JPGs.
I'm running latest Aperture 2.1.4 and Mac OS X 10.6.6 w/ all updates (related or non related) installed.
Plugged the 7d through a USB cable, imported all the photos in Aperture, problem is, I can only see a thumbnail of the photos, tried to fully browse them w/o any luck, I get a dark-red screen with: "Unsupported Image Format", also, thumbnails are pixelated.
I've done my searching and found out that I need to select-all images and go to: File>Migrate Images, tried that, both 'Upgrade Existing RAW images' and 'Create upgraded version of existing RAW images'. None worked out for me, I still can't view my images & edit them within Aperture 2.1.4.
What should I do? I desperately need help!
    Thanks in advance...

First, make sure that you are using full RAW files not RAWs. RAW s is a smaller size setting in the camera which has not been supported by Aperture in the past. Second, try rebuilding your Aperture database. I have a Canon 7d and use RAW. It works fine on my system. You can try reinstallation but if your problem is the RAW version or your database, reinstallation will not address the problem.

  • When will Aperture support RAW in Canon 6D

I bought a brand new Canon 6D. Beautiful equipment! I'm hoping beautiful pictures. However, I can't see any of them in Aperture! The latest version of Lightroom 4 won't read the Canon 6D files either. Now what?

The Canon 6D  is not yet on the list of supported cameras, see Apple - Aperture - Technical Specifications - RAW Support
While you are waiting for the raw support to be released, yo can do two things:
Shoot raw+jpeg pairs, and import them to Aperture with the jpeg as master. Later you can switch to raw as master.
Use the software that came with your camera to develop the raw and convert to tiff. Then use the tiff in Aperture.
We don't know, when the raw support will be released, only Apple knows. Sorry.

  • Aperture for Raw over Canon

    Hello photogs
I have to use my 7D to shoot some photos in the middle of filming a documentary. Just wondering how well Aperture handles Raw over a third party or Canon software?
I will use Aperture as my organization and Photoshop to edit. Just wondering how the workflow and range for Raw was using Aperture to ingest?
    Thank You!

Just because it's on the list doesn't mean the conversion will be satisfactory. Worth comparing a RAW import into Aperture with one done using the camera manufacturer's software.
Hope you Canon guys fair better than us Nikon guys

  • Aperture & Lion not recognizing Canon 1D Mark IV videos

Upgraded the 17" MBP i7 to Lion.
When I import 1D Mark IV photos and videos from a CF card, it takes forever if there are videos on the card. It's fine if there's not. And when the videos come in to Aperture, they're not recognized as video files (even though they're .MOV files). Quicktime Player plays them fine.
Did 10.7 nuke something from Canon that I have to re-install?

The issue seems to be that /Library/Quicktime had a lot of outdated Quicktime stuff. I noticed QT is now mostly in /System/Library/Quicktime, so I deleted everything in /Library/Quicktime and now it seems to work.

  • How does Aperture handle RAW from Canon S90

I have my Canon S90 set to RAW plus jpeg. I don't see any of the RAW photos in Aperture 3, just the JPEGs.
What's happening to the RAW images?

"Do you have a very specific requirement That needs both. ? If not just use raw, Aperture will produce any number of file formats from the raw file when required, but Aperture does not need them."
Thanks for your very hepful comment.
The only reason I'm using both RAW and JPEG is that I'd read that the Canon S90 does its image processing "in camera" for JPEG but relies on the Canon (computer) software to process RAW. That means that some distorted lines are fixed in camera in JPEG but not in RAW.
Normally, I'd greatly prefer RAW only for use in Aperture, that's a big advantage of using Aperture 3. However I worry that the lack of in camera processing for RAW would be a problem if I import directly into Aperture, instead of going through Canon software on my computer, which I prefer not to install.
If any body has experience with the S90 and Aperture using RAW, feel free to chime in.

  • Can't tether Canon EOS-1D C to LR

The camera shows "Busy" and is locked up when trying to tether to LR on Mac 10.8.2
    Has anyone had any success?

Here is an automator app to convert 'C' files to 'X' which can then be read by LR and Photoshop:

No, it does not.  The Canon 7D was supported for the first time in ACR 5.6, which does not run with CS3.

…Must I upgrade Photoshop and Lightroom?
Yes. Otherwise you have two options:
    • Download the free Adobe DNG Converter 6.4 and use that program to convert your Canon raw files to raw DNG files which you can then open in ACR 4.6 hosted by CS3; or
    • use the Canon software.

  • Tether mode with Canon 40D

    Hi Guys,
I Can't get my Canon 40D connected with the tether mode in Aperture. I rode in topics from early 2008 Aperture didn't supported Canon 40D. I was wondering if someone knows more about this and/or have a solution for this problem.
    Thanks in advance!

I submitted the following on the Apple Feedback page. Feel free to copy and paste, and do the same thing.
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html
Ever since upgrading to the newest version of OSX, I'm having a problem tethering my Canon 40D to my Macbook using the Canon EOS Utility. After doing a number of searches on various photography and Mac forums, this is a common problem that seems to be a problem with OSX, not the Canon Utility. This is a VERY frustrating problem, and more can be read about it here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=8741896
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8832865
    http://photo.net/canon-eos-digital-camera-forum/00IMwB
And a number of other places.
I'm using a Canon 40D with OSX 10.5.6 on my Macbook. When I plug in the camera to the laptop and launch EOS Utility, sometimes it will launch properly, but as soon as I take a few photos or start adjusting settings, it'll start slowing down, then I'll get the spinning beachball of doom requiring me to force quit the EOS Utility. This is getting INCREDIBLY frustrating, as it's supposed to be a functionality supported by both Canon and Apple. I've also tried using the Aperture 2 Tether feature, but it doesn't support the 40D. I would really like to see either Canon or Apple take some responsibility for this problem and get it resolved soon.
Apple, please listen - your customers are begging for your help with this.
