Aperture 2.0 won't use my "Aperture Trial Library"

For some reason, Aperture 2.0 is suddenly now asking me each time I open it if I want to create a NEW trial library. I can't get it to open the Trial library I already made with it! At this point, I'm stuck. I've got an "Aperture Trial Library" that I made when I first opened Aperture 2.0, but it's now worthless.
Anyone else experience this? Any fix?

I finally just upgraded. Of course, that fixed it.

Go into Time Machine (the program not the bundle on the extrnal disk) and using Time Machine's browser go to the Folder where the library lives. You could look in the library bundle in Time Machine but that won't really tell you much,
If you want to make sure it truely has backed up your library you will need to restore it and open the restored library with Aperture.
If all this still has you confused you need to read up on Time Machine in order to get a feel for how it works, for what it is doing and for how to restore files from it.

  • Photos uploaded to ipad won't sync to Aperture

I took some photos while on the road and used the Camera connection to upload them to my iPad 3. When I sync the iPad with my iMac, the photos won't upload to Aperture. I am certain there is a simple explanation and easy fix, but I haven't figured it out yet. Thanks for any suggestions.

After using the Camera Connection Kit and importing the photos to your iPad, you now should be seeing them in an event on the iPad.
When you connect the iPad with an USB cable to your mac and open Aperture, you should see the photos in the Camera Roll and the photos in the events in Aperture's Import panel, to be ready to be imported to Aperture - tested with Aperture 3.4.5 and iPad 3.
With the "Photos.app" on the iPad you could also select the photos in the event and use "Share" to share them to your Photo Stream. But saving to the Camera Roll is not possible.
With the "iPhotos.app" on the iPad you have additional sharing options. You can save the photos to the Camera Roll or to iTunes. Both would be helpful, if you already have edited the photos and want to import the edited versions.
See this support article:  http://support.apple.com/kb/PH3148 , the paragraph "Import photos to iPhoto or Aperture on your computer" at the end of the document.

  • Two issues on Aperture: single photo won't show in viewer, emptied trash won't indicate as empty

Using Version 3.5.1. Several after-market edit plug-ins attached. Two new problems:
Very recently, when editing, the single photo viewer mode will start showing only black (blank), or shows the photo very briefly then goes black, or shows another different photo, or a damaged-looking photo. Multiple photo viewer modes still work ok. Problem goes away upon quitting and restarting Aperture, but then shortly soonafter recurs while editing.
Also, trash continually indicates 477 undeleted photos even after emptying. Additional photos added to trash get added to this count (i.e. it then indicates, say, 492 photos in trash, while showing only the actual 15 legitimate files in the trash folder), and then can successfully deleted the actual trashed files back to the mysterious 477, although with no photos actually left in the trash folder and the Empty Trash function still active for these 477 ghost files. This problem persists despite restarting.
    Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

First of all, make sure you have a current, working backup of your Aperture library.
Is your Aperture library on your system drive or on an external drive? If external drive, how is the library connected? And is the library referenced or managed?
    Several after-market edit plug-ins attached.
Have you checked, if your plug-ins are the latest versions, and compatible with MacOS X Mavericks?
What trouble-shooting measures have you already tried? If you have not already done so, use the Aperture Library First Aid tools and repair the permissions and the database, see this page of the Aperture User Manual:  Repairing and Rebuilding Your Aperture Library: Aperture 3 User Manual
    Post back, with more information.

  • What is the best way to consolidate Aperture and iPhoto libraries onto an external drive? I am just starting out and not used to Aperture filing system.

I would like to use the drive as storage/aperture backup rather than use it to back up my whole Macbook.  Would like to keep the majority of the photo files on the ext. drive and be able to add files there directly.  BUT, when workng in aperture would like to be able to select some from the ext. drive and work them on the laptop directly without having to have the ext drive attached.
So do i, have the aperture library path mapped to the ext drive, and then import the iphoto library? and then how do i add additional from the camera?  Or, do i move everything together (imported iphotos and new from camera) in Aperture on the Macbook first, and then transfer that library to the ext drive?
For the life of me I can't figure out how to do this in a way that seems logical.  Vaults?  Masters on ext drive, versions on the macbook? Consolidating libraries? The endless possible answers are baffling me.
    Thanks for any help!

Hi Shane.  Not much in the way of thoughts - - but fwiw:
    How is the drive attached?
Can you open large files on the drive with other programs?
Are you running any drive compression or acceleration programs (some drives arrive with these installed)?
Can you reformat the drive and try again?
    Hi Kirby,
I attached the UltraMax Plus with a USB cable. The UltraMax powers the cable so power is not an issue. I can open other files. Also, there is 500GB of files on the drive so I cannot re-format it. Although, I noted I could import the entire Aperture Library. However, I do not want to create a duplicate on my machine because that would be defeating the purpose of the external drive.
    Thanks,
    Shane

  • Aperture 3.1 won't open after 10.6.8 update

I've been working with Aperture 3.1 for awhile and recently updated to Snow Leopard 10.6.8. Aperture will not open after the update. I receive an error message that says I need to update Aperture, that it may not be compatible with my current version of Mac OSX. I tried downloading and installing the Aperture 3.1.1 update but the install package won't run displaying a message that I need Aperture 3 or later. Pretty sure I have Aperture 3 because I'm watching the application icon bounce in my dock with no response.
Any suggestions? Please don't suggest updating my OSX to Lion or later because 10.6.8 is as recent an operating system as my model can allow apparently. I can't find the Aperture disc to reinstall either....so hoping the responses aren't all just "you're screwed!".

I installed snow leopard with the disc purchased from Apple. I will try downloading the 3.2.4 update. Thanks for the link. Here's a screenshot of the error message.

  • Is it possible to control the naming convention used by Aperture when importing photos?  If so, how

When I import photos from my camera, I have them placed into projects based on the date the photos were taken. However, I do not like the naming convention used by Aperture as it causes the projects to sort into a non-chronologial order. The convention is MMM-DD-YYYY and I want to change it to YYYY-MM-DD. Is it possible in Aperture 3.2.4 to do this?

In the Import  panel you can edit the preset for the file name format to "Image year - image month - image day - index" for example; the preset for folder names seems to be gone in Aperture 3,3 - at least I cannot find it any longer. You only seem to be able to enter the folder name manually in the Import panel.

  • Aperture First Aid won't launch

Had a USB hub fail while my Aperture library was open, which evidently caused some database corruption. Read up on how to use the Aperture 3 First Aid function to repair...but the thing _will not launch_. Every time I try and launch Aperture (whether by launching the app directly or by double clicking the library) while holding down Command-Option, it just gives me the standard "database error" message.
I've trashed the user/plist file for Aperture, no change. I've reinstalled Aperture from scratch....no change. First aid just will not launch, no matter what I seem to do.
    Help!

So the drive was connected to your Mac through a hub. The Aperture library is on this drive. The hub failed while Aperture had this library opened. You fixed the hub or reconnected the drive through another USB port. And finally there is no backup.
    Accurate so far?
Did you try to open the library and get an error message and then try running the library first aid or did you go straight to first aid?
Is the external disk formatted OS X Extended? Do you have room to make a copy of the library? If you do it would be a good idea to do so before proceeding. It is always possible that while troubleshooting you could make things worst and having a BU of the library, even though it is messed up would be a good thing.
    Some things to try:
Run +Disk Utility+ *disk repair* on the affected drive. If Disk Utility reports that if fixed something keep running it until it reports that the drive 'appears ok'. Try Aperture now, fixed?
If no then start Aperture by holding the ⌥ (option) key only. This will bring up Aperture's library chooser. Create a new empty library. Try to merge the corrupted library into the new empty library. Aperture will still need to repair the library but some users have reported success doing it this way when trying to fix the library from the first aid window failed.
    Begin a backup program.

iPhoto 9.3 requires OS X 10.7.4 now. You can use your actual version of iPhoto or upgrade to Lion (or wait to Mountain Lion)

    Hello Michael,
Yes, there is. Look in the Inspector - Adjustment Tab:
In the "Presets-Selector -> Quick Fixes" you will find "Auto Enhance"

  • HT3805 I have Aperture 3 installed and have used it for a while.  Now when I try to open it, the licensing window appears asking for the registration #.  Yet it says it's invalid.  (I have the # from Aperture on another computer.)  Any ideas?

I have Aperture 3 iinstalled and have used it for quite a while.  Now when I try to open it a licensing window appears and wants the reg #.  I copy it from the program on another comupter, yet it says that it's invalid.  Any ideas?

    Check this support article:
    Troubleshooting Professional Application Serial Numbers:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2005
Sometimes look-alike characters may be confused, also you may need to enter the previous registration numbers as well, if your Aperture version is an upgrade to Aperture 2 or 1.

  • Aperture 2.1.4 crashes using Lion 10.7.2

I am not sure if it is just because I am now using Lion, but my editing software keeps crashing about ever 10 to 30 photos I go through. Its really frustrating especially when Im on a roll and I have to stop and wait for the program to reload. I have gotten so frustrated that after the 4th or 5th crash, I don't want to do it anymore. I really like this program and don't want to buy anything unless I absolutly have to. If anyone has any ideas, let me know! Thanks!

okay, so here are the first 50 lines or so of what keeps coming up. This time I wasnt even using the program. It was open in the task bar.

  • Using both aperture and iphoto

is there a way to use both aperture and iphoto without duplicating all the pictures? can I just point aperture to the iphoto folder with my pictures? i would like to use both, but don't want to have to duplicate all of my pictures, my hard drive can't handle my heavy shutter finger twice over.

Fundamentally our need/pain drives our determination of the best solution.
iPhoto is great as you say for integration cross iLife, basic photo management and basic edits.
Once you start to use Aperture with any volume of photos, it rapidly dawns on you how basic iPhoto is. I have tried both, and used iPhoto from iLife 04 onwards. iPhoto becomes unwieldly when you start throwing 100, 200, 500 or a 1,000 images at it. Compares and selects, sorting on different metadata, all slicker than iPhoto. But when it comes to image adjustments, there really is no comparison. Highlights/Shadows, Levels with quarter points, spot/patch controls ... smoothing, etc. To say nothing of seeing your original and modified(s) side by side. Or how about non-destructive crops so you can create the best possible presentation of the object with the overall image? Organization and navigational structure? Built in backup (Vaults) so that it is easy to back up. Yes, I'm sold on Aperture and that's why I now export just my finished (keepers) results back to iPhoto and not the other way around.
As your volumes grow, and your experience with Aperture grows, I'm sure you will start to reconsider.
    Have fun.

  • Use of Aperture?

I was just about to click purchase Aperture, when i remembered there was a 30 day trial of it. So i thought to myself, theres no harm in simply trying it first. So i downloaded the file, installed it. Once i started using it however, i think i may have misunderstood the use of the application. See i thought it was like photoshop! Imaging software which allowed my to cut certain bits from certain images and use them on another image, tools like lasso and other useful ones are not there. Did i misinterpret the use of aperture? If so what is the main use of it? Because at the moment it seems like its features are extremely similar to those of iPhoto

IMO use Aperture for management and minor editing, GIMP/PSE or PS for any editing that Aperture cannot provide. In an earlier post I analyzed thusly:
    Group A
Aperture is Apple's pro app for RAW images capture management. Lightroom is Adobe's pro app for RAW images capture management. iPhoto is Apple's free entry-level app for images capture management.
    Group B
Open-source GIMP or inexpensive Adobe Photoshop Elements are for basic to intermediate image editing, adequate for most photogs. Very expensive full Adobe Photoshop is for pro graphics work and very advanced image editing. Other free and/or low cost editors are also available. Many folks consider the open-source GIMP a superior app to PSE.
Two apps are needed. Digital photographers ideally should own and learn reasonable competence with one app from each of groups A & B above. Note that Aperture and GIMP/PSE are in different groups.
IMO the evolution of a digital photog is to start with iPhoto and quickly outgrow it. After that I recommend that the next step is to own both Aperture and GIMP or PSE.
If one advances to the point of doing really advanced graphics work the upgrade from GIMP/PSE to full Photoshop is easy enough, just expensive and with very substantial additional learning curve. I use the full Design Premium Creative Suite, and the upgrade to CS4 from CS3 is so expensive I am staying with CS3.
Bridge is Adobe's pro app that comes with full Photoshop and manages files handling within the Creative Suite. I do not include it in Group A above because it is far inferior to Aperture and Lightroom for digital photographers managing DSLR image capture.
Bridge is a file-management app, not a database. The folks who like Bridge are usually very experienced Photoshop graphics folks (often coming from a long history with film scans, which involves totally different workflow than modern DSLR capture) rather than primarily digital photogs.
Note that PSE should not be used for RAW image conversion because the RAW conversion engine in PSE is a compromised version of ACR, not the complete version of ACR found in full (very expensive) Photoshop. Use Aperture or camera vendor (e.g. Nikon) software for RAW conversion prior to PSE edits if PSE edits are necessary. In my case for 98% of pix Aperture does it all, no external editor required.

  • Just downloaded the Mavericks OS X but now I can't use my Aperture 3.2.4.  What do I need to do?

Can you help me figure out how to use my Aperture after downloading Mavericks OS X?

You need to update Aperture to at least version 3.4.5 or vesion 3.5.1.
Back up your Aperture library, because updating Aperture will cause your Aperture library to be upgraded to a new format, and it will be safer to have a backup.
Then sign into the AppStore with your AppleID and check, if there is an update for Aperture on the Updates page or if you are seeing Aperture on the "Accept" part of the "Purchased" page.  Download the updater, and after it installed, click your Aperture library to let it upgrade.
