Aperture 2.1.1 freezing

I am sure this has been posted more than once, but can not find specifically what I am looking for.
1. I installed Aperture 2.1.1 on OS 10.4.11 and used for several weeks without difficulties.
2. I just upgrade to 10.5.4 from a 10.5.1 installation disk with a combo upgrade to 10.5.4. I have done this on two machines. My Alu iMac seems to be fine as least so far; however my MacBook Pro Aperture 2.1.1 has crashed (just freezes up) during editing of pictures.
I have repaired permissions without a positive effect. I have verified the disk and it is deemed ok.
I am rebuilding the library (3 small projects..not more than 1000 pictures), and vacuum has been running for about 30 minutes which seems a bit long for 1000 pictures.
Question.
1. Would would you recommend as a solution or possible solution?
2. How does one do a clean install of Aperture? I have the Aperture 2.0 upgrade disks.
Thanks
Steven

to uninstall ...
drag the app to the trash ...
delete the following folders and files ...

  • Aperture/Photoshop CS3 System Freeze

    Hi All-
I have had my intel-based imac 24" for about a month. All versions of software have been updated. I noticed that when I run Aperture, it will sometimes freeze everything on the computer except itunes (basically, shuts down the finder). The only way to release it is to shut it down and start it again. It has now begun freezing in Photoshop as well. It's never the same thing that causes the freeze, so I can't replicate it, and it doesn't seem to matter what other applications are running. Because it freezes and doesn't crash, there are no crash logs. Now here's the kicker: two weeks ago, I was in the Apple Store, getting a one-to-one lesson on Aperture. My instructor and I were using the same model imac I own. I was describing the freezing problem I have in Aperture, and the instructor said, "wow, that's really strange... I haven't heard of that happening." About five minutes later, *the SAME thing happened on the imac at the Apple Store*! After booting back up, my instrutor tried to replicate the conditions for the freeze, but the imac was fine. Now I know it's not my machine, but a system-wide bug because it happened in a totally different context on a different computer. I've found a few topics about this, but wondering if others have had this issue, and if they've found any solutions. (BTW, I have spent more than two hours on the phone with Applecare about this, and their offered solutions have not solved the problem.) Will we just have to wait for a software update?

Yes, there are a lot of Posts on this same problem.
I'm also looking for a solution.
My new 24 imac Crashes when waking from sleep(Sometimes), using iphoto(sometimes) and Using aperture(Always)
It is a very annoying Bug, I cannot use Aperture because it is crashing every 5 minutes.
    Here's another Thread I found: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=5469977#5469977
Lets hope Apple gives us a solution quickly

  • Why does Aperture 3.4.5 freeze when making a slideshow?

I have tried two methods of creating a slideshow:
    1. Using the 'play slideshow' option from the File menu.
    2. Using the 'new - slideshow' option from the File menu.
In the first case, Aperture simply freezes. The choice of 'theme' (Classic, Ken Burns, etc) does not come up, and nor can anything be selected from the library inspector. The only option was to use Force Quit.
In the second case, a new slideshow is available at the bottom of the library inspector; however, when dragging and dropping pictures, as soon as I try to look in the slideshow folder, Aperture freezes with the 'loading' message (and rotating circle). No pictures can be seen in the slideshow folder. The only option was to use Force Quit.
In both cases, all the photos are less than 3.5 MB, and there were approximately 50 photos in each folder. No music or video was added.
As an aside, I have tried deleting and reinstalling Aperture, and it has not made any difference.
Grateful for any assistance on creating and playing slideshows.

as soon as I try to look in the slideshow folder, Aperture freezes with the 'loading' message (and rotating circle). No pictures can be seen in the slideshow folder. The only option was to use Force Quit.
Are you always trying with the same images, or does it happen with any images you try?
if it only happens, when ecrtain imges are included, remove these images from your library.
If it happens with any image you try, create a new Aperture Library (File > Switch to Library > Other/new) and test,  if Aperture can play slideshows using a new library.
If you can play slideshows in a new Aperture library, repair or rebuild your main Aperture library, see: Aperture 3 User Manual: Repairing and Rebuilding Your Aperture Library
And if you cannot even play a slideshow from a new library, remove your Aperture preferences, see: Aperture 3: Troubleshooting Basics
    Delete the user preferences
You can resolve many issues by restoring Aperture back to its original settings. This will not impact your image files or your library. To reset your Aperture user preference settings to their original state, do the following:
    Quit Aperture.
In the Finder choose Go to folder from the Go menu.
Type ~/Library/Preferences in the "Go to the folder" field. Press the Go button.
Remove the "com.apple.Aperture.plist" file from the Preferences folder.
Note: The locations of your Aperture libraries are stored in the preference file listed above. If you have stored your library outside the default location of  ~/Pictures/Aperture Library, make a note of where the library is before deleting the Aperture preferences file. If you have more than one library, you can bring up a dialog to choose which one to load by pressing Option immediately after you open Aperture.
Post back, if none of this helps.
    Regards

  • TS2518 Aperture 3.4.1 freezing after update - only on one user

Since upgrading to Aperture 3.4.1 Apeture freezes everytime I open it up. The freezing on occurs on my main user. The library works fine in other user accounts and on my other Mac. Aperture also freezes when opening any library (even a new one) on my main user account. I have tried reinstalling (including deleteing Application Support/Aperture and plist files). am downloading through the AppStore. Have also tried repairing permissions through Disk Utility and Reseting ACL's for the user.
Furthermore iPhoto freezes when launched from this user as well which leads me to believe this is a corrupt shared file between the two? any advice before I start systematically ruling out files in the library??
    Thanks!

Where are your Aperture/iPhoto Libraries located? On an external drive or your system drive? If external: Is the drive locally connected, or a network volume? How is it formatted?
Check the settings and preferences, that are shared by iPhoto and Aperture:
Your login items: Do you launch any third-party application/utilities on login? Or have preference panes installed to be used with image capture? Do you have any Aperture plugins, that may no longer be compatible?
The image capture preferences are shared between all photo apps: Try to remove them.
The iLifeAssetManagement folder in your library is shared by iPhoto and Aperture.
To remove the image capture preferences:
If Aperture is running, quit Aperture,  and log off and on again.
Open your user library from the Finder's Go menu: Hit Command Shift G (⌘⇧G) and then type in: ~/Library/Preferences/  then hit return.
In the window that opens remove "com.apple.ImageCapture.plist"
and look into the subfolder "ByHost": if there are files named com.apple.ImageCapture  something .plist  remove them too.
    then try again.
If you are using PhotoStream, try to remove the iLifeAssetManagement folder from your User Library: (it is located in the Applications Support folder). This folder is also shared by Aperture and iPhoto in your User account.
    ~/Library/Application Support/iLifeAssetManagement/
Removing this folder will remove the local copy of your PhotoStreams howver; so make a backup, if you want to save the images.
Please report back with the results, if this does not help.
    Regards

  • Aperture 3 continues to freeze

I continue to have problems with Aperture "not responding". My first problem was that my external HD was not formatted correctly. After formatting the HD to Mac OS extended, everything worked fine...for a very short time.
Now after doing very much at all I will have to repair permissions, then repair the DB and finally rebuild the DB and then things will work fine again...for a very short time.
But no matter what I do, after working in Aperture for any amount of time at all, it will start to "not respond" and I have to begin this exercise all over again.
I hope someone can please offer a simple solution to this problem. I can't imagine I am the only with this happening.
I also can't imagine that Apple continues to ignore this problem.
Thanks in advance for any input.

As long as only one user is accessing the library, it should work fine on an external drive. Many Aperture users have their libraries on external drives. I actually have multiple users accessing my library on an external drive by disabling permissions on the 2nd drive. (Get Info on external drive and check the "ignore ownership" box at the bottom). You shouldn't need to do this if only one user is accessing it.
A few weeks back that permissions setting on my external drive somehow got changed and I was experiencing symptoms similar to yours which is why I thought it might be your issue.

  • Aperture/Mac Pro freeze in mid import

The computer freezes in the middle of Aperture imports. The first time it happened, I restarted, went back to Aperture and the software freezes up--from here, I can force quit. I've tried everything that I can think of to address this issue: I tried resetting preferences, with no result. I rebuilt my library, and that gave me access to Aperture again, but every time I try to import, the whole computer freezes halfway through. I uninstalled, reinstalled, it fixed the problem, but again, the computer freezes on import. I restored my library from the vault, again, problem fixed, then freezes up on import. I'm a pro, and I use aperture to upload client files to my ftp. I can't be without this program and my library. Any other suggestions? I'm desperate!!! (It's not a card reader or raw file issue, the same pics upload into iPhoto just fine--no problems. I upgraded to the new Mac Pro less than a month and have had no other problems. All other software etc. works perfectly.)

Please let me know if you find anything out about this problem. I'm about to download Lightroom and give up on Aperture for good. I don't want to do this because I have an aperture plugin that connects me with my pro lab and event hosting service. Now I'll have to manually size my images and get some ftp program like fetch. All of this is going to equal a lot more work for me. So if you resolve this issue, I would love to find out how. (I didn't have any problems before my last update, and the version on my MacBook Pro (not updated from 2.0) still seems to work. It's just so slow! you think it's an update issue?)

  • Mac freezes when using Core Image apps (iMaginator, Lineform-) but-

… not with Apple Core Image apps like iPhoto or Aperture.
The computer freezes and after rebooting and checking the logfile, it says :

I've upgraded my G4 AGP with a Radeon 9800 pro. It seems to be a driver issue or a Core Image bug. After talking with an expert from Strange Dogs, it could be a driver issue concerning especially the G4 AGP and the 9800 pro. Does some one know something about this problem ?
    Thank you very much.

Hey, what os version are You using ?
It's possible that it's hard drive but also its possible that is just ram.
Get same software for disk test and check whats the time for accesing data.
Also you might check ram, easest way is to open any file document and just copy any text with cmd+c cmd+v
to the moment the ram would be almoust full then remove all text. if it crashes then it seems that its ram

  • Tethered Shooting with 5d Mark II and Aperture 2.1.4 not working

Is the 5d mark II not supported by aperture 2? I've been successful shooting tethered with the EOS utility (version 1.6), but whenever I use aperture 2, my camera freezes up and the buttons won't work. I have to power down and disconnect the USB. On the tethered HUD, it says that the 5d mark II is connected, but i'm unable to take a picture. Anyone else have this problem, or know how to solve it?
    Thanks for your help!

Unfortunately, the 5D Mark II isn't yet have support for tethered shooting as does the 5D Mark I. There is an Automator action you can set up with a "Hot Folder" using the EOS capture utility that is a decent work around. Been using this technique for several months now. I'm sure an update or next version will include tethered support.

  • Aperture 3 goes non-responding every time opened

Hi, every time I open Aperture 3, it will freeze up, I get the spinning rainbow ball and it goes non-responding. What I suspect to be the problem is that it goes to a project with a bunch of videos and hangs because it can't load them all. I'm not sure how to make it so that it doesn't open to my last project. Help?

Hm, I just opened it again and it just went to the regular project view. Weird, it has never done that. Thanks though!

  • My experiences & solutions to new overheating iMac

I know there are many threads concerning these overheating problem with some new aluminum iMacs but it's kind of hard to decide which one to post my experience to so I'm just posting a new thread. This is not a question because I think I fixed the problem with mine. I just wanted to share this with people in hopes that it might correct your problem as well instead having to take it back to the store.
Well, I bought a new 20" 2.4 aluminum iMac on August 24th. I connected my previous iMac to it and started migrating my user account & files to it. During this process is when the new iMac completely shut off on me! I thought it was just a glitch or something. So I turned it back on and it started the migration again. Everything went well this time. But since then it has turned off on me at least 3-4 times. When I was backing up files to an external drive. And a few times while working in Photoshop and Aperture it would start freezing up & the graphics would become distorted and blocks all over the screen. And from my days of overclocking PCs I knew this was a heat related problem more than likely with the video card.
So I installed a program called smcfancontrol and was able to up the speed of the fans. This corrected the problem and I didn't get lock ups or freezes after that. But I knew you shouldn't have to do this so I was looking for a solution so I wouldn't have to take the iMac back to the local Apple Store. Because that would be a pain having to backup files and start over again.
I reset the fans back to normal speed and quit the smcfancontrol program. I installed iStat Menus so I could monitor the fans & temp. It would seem that when the GPU would reach 150 deg F then it would start having problems. Well, I reset the SMC, PRAM, and NVRAM to see if this would solve the problem. Because what it seemed like what was happening was that the part of the system that controls the fans & temp was not responding correctly when it got hot.
Since I did the reset to those areas of the system I have not had any shut downs or freezes. I ran the system through a number of tests. I worked in Photoshop & Aperture at the same time doing a number of different processes while playing music in iTunes. I did the Hardware Test a couple of times. Xbench. And I also ran an pretty intensive test called CPUTest where it got the whole computer pretty hot through repetition. The fan for the CPU was speeding up over the normal 1200 rpm like it should and it never shut off or gave any more errors.
So I'm crossing my fingers now that the issue with my new iMac was resolved with resetting the SMC, PRAM, and NVRAM. And it saves me a trip back to the Apple Store!
I hope this information is helpful to someone.
Following these links on how to reset the SMC, PRAM, & NVRAM:

    -Kevin
*I have owned quite a few Macs over the past six years and have technician certifications in both Macs & PCs.*

Well, I've been wrestling with my iMac for the past week in trying to solve my freeze & shutdown problem so I wouldn't have to take it back to the Apple Store and also if I did then I would like to know what the problem is first so I can tell them if it is definitely a hardware problem. The freezes & shutdowns would happen at random times and I don't think it is a overheating problem now because of this. It did seem like it would happen more often when I would work in Aperture & Photoshop. I would get through editing 3 or 4 photos and it would lock up completing. Then I would have to do a hard reset.
Anyway, yesterday morning I reinstalled the OS via Archive & Install. It seemed to be running better. So I started working on some projects but again after doing some work for about an hour, it froze on me. I took a break because I was fed up with it at the time and came back to it later.
I decided to reset the SMC and PRAM again since I had not done that after the OS reinstall. Then I removed all extra cables except the extra display, keyboard, mouse, & speakers. I skimmed through 2000 photos in Aperture and I monitored the temp & fan speeds. The whole computer got pretty hot especially the CPU and video card (GPU). The CPU fan sped up to 1500rpm at one point like it should. And after getting through all those photos, it did not freeze or shut down on me at all. Woohoo!
And this morning I noticed that the computer went to sleep like it was supposed to. It never did that before. So I'm thinking maybe the OS reinstall and the second time of resetting the SMC & PRAM might have solved my problem. I'm crossing my fingers! I will be gradually plugging in my extra devices to make sure one of those is not the problem.
Anyway, I hope sharing my experiences have helped. I definitely know the AppleCare & "Genius" Bar hasn't been much help to me. Seems like all they know how to do is turn it on! I hate having the feeling that I know more than the people who are supposed to be qualified to be in that position. And as for AppleCare I got some guy from another country who had bad English and was obviously reading through a step by step handbook and wasn't listening to what I was saying very much.
Side note: It's obvious that Apple moved the power supply from below the screen to the upper left corner of the iMac. That's the reason it is warmer in that area. I wouldn't be concerned about that. These power supplies have always run that warm in the flat iMacs. Easier to feel on these new models though because they are thinner.

  • Which is better for physical therapy graduate student, a MacBook air or MacBook pro?

Which is better for a physical therapy graduate student, a MacBook air or MacBook pro?

    Macbook Air
I cannot see you using strenuous applications to help you with a Physical Therapy Degree.
Have a think of whether you want an 11" or 13".
I'd recommend the 13" because although the 11" is perfect for taking notes in class etc.; when it comes to performing as a desktop and not sitting on your lap, it can seem too small.
The 13" is the best of both worlds. You can keep the portability and the power in one.
Make sure you get a large enough SSD, they always fill up fast with documents and possibly downloaded text books etc.
With the 13" if you decide to create a innovative project or a collection of photos, you can also use more RAM-consuming applications like iPhoto and iMovie, or even Aperture without worrying about freezing.

  • Aperture 3 keeps crashing or freezing in the middle of editing a photo. I am trying to start editing a shoot I did but I can't even finish one picture without it crashing. Please help!!!

I'm trying to finish a start editing a photo shoot I did yesterday and I've been editing with Aperture for a several months without a problem until a couple of weeks ago. I think there was an update somewhere in there and not I cannot even finish one picture, as it freezes or crashes on me every single time. It does not save anything that I have already edited and I have to start over from scratch only to have it crash on me again. I have updated my ram which helped with the slowness I was experiencing back in January. I need help fast!
    Thank you!

Starting oiff by giving your hardware and software setup would be a big help. Also any steps you've already taken to try and fix the problem.
If you haven't done so already have a look at Aperture 3: Troubleshooting Basics
Without move info it's hard to get more specific than that.

  • Aperture albums freeze the Desktop

Hi all, I'm having a problem that has been vexing me ever since I upgraded to 10.7.2. I am using Aperture 3.2 to manage my photos. When I go to the Desktop & Screen Saver preference pane, everything looks fine. But when I try to scroll down to my Aperture albums, the whole preference pane freezes. No buttons including the close, etc. buttons work. I am able to quit it normally though.
I have tried all the repair options on my Aperture library as well as starting a brand new one to no avail. I have also tried recreating the previews. My albums actually work fine in iMovie and iTunes. iPhoto albums appear fine. Deleting the screensaver related preference files in ~/Library/Preferences and ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost hasn't helped either. The problem persists after reinstalling 10.7.2 and upgrading to Aperture 3.2.1.
When I look in the console, the freeze is associated with a series of messages which look like this:

  • Aperture freezes after update!!

    Hello everyone.
I updated Aperture when i heard of the new update, but now Aperture freezes my Mac completly, so that i have to hold down the power button to shut down the computer.
It only happens after maybe 15 min of use. Only the mouse is working, everything else is frozen.
I just bought the new Macbook Pro 13", i never had the problem before with my old Mac from 2009.
But it seems like it´s the update that causes the problem.
Anyone experienced this or know what to do?

Your mobile strategy seems similar to the mobile strategy I used for a long time, but a very large constraint was that within 3-4 months, the AP library on the internal drive of the MBP became sufficiently large that it needed to be moved off the internal drive and a new AP library needed to be started. All of these libraries used referenced RAW files on an external drive. I only have 160 GB. The other huge issue was the requirement that I do all my project editing on my MBP prior to finalization or I had the onerous task of 'synchronization' I only edit on my MBP when absolutely necessary. Otherwise I would prefer my desktop.
My current model is simplier, assuming that it works. I place my active project pictures in managed libraries with distinct project names on an external drive. I can then load those individual libraries with the Aperture that resides on my laptop or on my desktop and not have to worry about which library is most up to date because I am always working on the same library. After the initial creation of the project specific library, I copy it to a 4TB FW drive and back that up to a second 4TB drive. So before I start working on the library, I have three copies of the library and the original RAW files.
Once the project is completed, I import it into the master library and back up, and archive the final project.
I guess I don't agree with your perspective about the relative importance of getting AP to play nice with USB drives, assuming that is the problem to begin with. I am doubtful, but it certainly is worth testing. I had work to get done today but hopefully I can spend time on this subject tomorrow.
For the looker-ons, I am wondering if anyone else places managed AP libraries on external USB drives and do extensive brush tool editing? If yes, do you have problems with AP crashing? Whose drive do you use, how large is your library and how much editing do you do on a regular basis?

Ok, figured out our problem of having to have the downstairs modem reset stems from using two different modems, a Westell 6100, and a Westell 6100F.  The computers are too far apart to link both together, and the house is too old to rewire, and we ar
