Aperture 2.1.4 problem - have thumbnail but not full-size image

I'm relatively new at using Aperture. I have been downloading photos from my Nikon D200 into iPhoto and then modifying those photos in Aperture. This has worked fine for several months. However, after installing v 2.1.4, I can no longer access the images I've altered in Aperture, although the thumbnail images are still present at the bottom of the screen. How do I access the images previously modified in Aperture? Are they stored somewhere in iPhoto?
I've been hesitant to download images from the camera straight into Aperture because I'm still not as proficient as I'd like with the program. For whatever reason, there are few training opportunities for Aperture here in the US....another issue.

Thank you for trying to help me with the problem. Let me back up a bit further so that you can better understand my problem. Here are some of the problems:
(1) I had been downloading all my pictures (Nikon D200) into iPhoto. After selecting a few that I would like to make adjustment using Aperture, then only I import versions of it into Aperture. The way I had been importing images is by going into Aperture, go to File show iPhoto, select photos by dragging them into album that I had created in Aperture. Is this the correct way of importing photos from iPhoto into Aperture?
(2) After making adjustments in Aperture recently, the next day I went back into Aperture to see them, all the pictures in the viewer is replaced by " Unsupported Image Format". Why Aperture let me do all the adjustments if this is unsupported image format? It only tell me this, the next day after I had tried to view all the photos with adjustments that were made earlier?
(3) Dozens of adjusted photos (versions) from my albums in Aperture had also disappeared. I had not use the vault in Aperture as yet. The question is where are all my adjusted versions being stored? My Aperture Library is shown to be empty! I thought at the very least, all my versions is stored in the Aperture Library. How do I store versions in this library?
Yes, my workflow may seems convoluted at the moment, using iPhoto as my reference and only dealing with versions in Aperture. The reason for my madness is quite simple ( I thought), I need to understand Aperture really well before importing photos directly into it and bypass iPhoto altogether. With all the problems that I am facing with Aperture at the moment, I am not quite there yet.
All help is greatly appreciated.

  • Iphoto : can see all thumbnails but not full size

I imported about 1000 photos into ipod and I can see the thumbnails just fine. But, when I double click on any thumbnail, all I see is a big white empty box with a ? inside. Please help!

    Andy:
Give this a try: download and run BatChmod on the iPhoto Library folder with the settings shown here, substituting your account name for mine. You can either type in the path to the folder or just drag the folder into that field.

  • Importing into iPhoto - thumbnails but no full-size pics

I'm setting up a new iMac with OS X Lion (10.7.2) and iPhoto '11 (9.1.5).
I've Imported to Library over 1,000 photos from iPhoto '08 (7.1.5) from the originals folder. They show up fine and I can see them as Events (after autosplitting) and Photos but when 1 choose one and click on it, I see a black screen. At the top is the date taken (top left) and on the right 6 of 6 (for example) showing how many are in the event. At the bottom are the thumbnails. When I show information, I can see how it was captured, the pixels and the file size plus a photo number and a date.  When I resize with the zoom bottom left , I can see a thumbnail of what is happening but no full siz photos.
Can anyone suggest what is wrong or what I am doing wrong?
Thanks in advance for the help you may be able to offer.
    John

There are several possible causes for the Black Screen issue
    1. Permissions in the Library: Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Include the option to check and repair permissions.
    2. Minor Database corruption: Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.
    3. A Damaged Photo: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and right click on it. From the resulting menu select 'Show File (or 'Show Original File' if that's available). Will the file open in Preview? If not then the file is damaged. Time to restore from your back up.
    4. A corrupted iPhoto Cache: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto folder from HD/Users/Your Name/Library/ Caches...
    5. A corrupted preference file: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    If none of these help:
    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

  • Upon opening a thumbnail to view full size image, it often spontaneously zooms to only display bottom left quarter of image.

When double-clicking on the thumbnail image of an iPhoto album, the full size image will often spontaneously zoom to only display the bottom left quarter of the entire photo when it displays in full size. I can easily work around this by clicking on the right arrow to go to the next full size image (which will display properly) and then click on the left arrow to go back to the initial affected image (which will also then display properly). It does not do this when full-sizing all images from their thumbnails - probably less than 10% of the time; but still often enough to be a pian. I cannot find anything in the preferences which would appear to cause or correct it.
It is a recent problem. I have been using iPhoto extensively for many years without any problems. I cannot recall for sure, but it may have started after my update to version 9.4.2.
Using an iMac with plenty of RAM, latest version of iPhoto 11 and Mountain Lion version 10.8.2.

What is the format of the PS photos and are there any alpha channels in them? You might try to re-edit them with PS, making some insignificant change and then saving.  See if the new edit will display properly.  Are you saving as jpgs with the Baseline format?
I may be preaching to the choir here but this may be of interest:
Using Photoshop or Photoshop Elements as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop or Photoshop Elememts as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop.  When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window
that indicates that  PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file.  You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements  the Saving File preferences should be configured as shown:
I also suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.  In PSE’s General preference pane set the Color Picker to Apple as shown:
Note:  to switch between iPhoto and PS or PSE as the editor of choice Control (right)-click on the thumbnail and select either Edit in iPhoto or Edit in External Editor from the contextual menu. If you use iPhoto to edit more than PSE re-select iPhoto in the iPhoto General preference pane. Then iPhoto will be the default editor and you can use the contextual menu to select PSE for your editor when desired.

  • Since Snow Leopard Aperture 3 upgrades - multiple problems have all but disabled my computer

I recently posted an Aperture and Apple TV question and it was suggested to me that because I'm having the plethora of serious problems that I needed to bring up the other issues here to seek advice.
The following problems have been going on for many months and I've been using my computer less and less. I have posted about and followed most of these problems before but I'm  going to revive my efforts to figure out how to get my computer working  again because the situtaion is simply heartbreaking to me and unbearable to ignore. Now  Aperture is crashing within seconds of opening it so I have no access to  all my photographs and no ability to pursue my photograhy hobby any  further.
First, a description of my set up. I have an early Mac Pro (Nov '06) with only 2 GB of RAM. It's a Dual-Core Intel Xeon, 3 GHz, with a ATI Radeon X1900 XT graphics card. I have a 500 GB primary drive where all my applications live and about 300 GB of free space there. My photo library is about 70,000 photos taking up 286 GB. I have all my photos residing on my second 1 TB internal HD with about 300 GB still free.
No matter what I'm working in, I have flashing artifacts all over my monitor. They flash several times a minute and are very distracting. Usually it's just random flickering about my desktop but it can also grab some part of my desktop or app I'm working in and make an odd, distorted area that hangs for a while. Sometimes the artifacts become quite bizarre. For instance, when my cursor is about to quit functioning (no click) sometimes it will form a track line of mulitiple colors as I drag it across the screen. I'd love to take a screenshot but when this happens I'm not able to click on anything and end up having to do a hard shut down with my power button.
I have horizontal lines that are sometimes confined to the browser screen but also go clear across my monitor. They are confined to my Apple Display and do not show up on the TV I have hooked up as a mirror monitor.
Crashes and instability have become the norm. I hold my breath on restarts hoping my cursor will click and my keyboard will work. I cannot estimate the times I've not been able to fill out a crash report or that I've typed a few short sentences and it's frozen before I can hit send.
The cursor is completely frozen in place only periodically. What is more common is that I can move it all around but can't select a thing. When that happens the keyboard is dead too. An action that tends to freeze the screen is when I scroll down within the first minute of my desktop appearing after restart and I get to the dock to pop up. At that second I'm often dead in the water. I can't click a thing.
The fans do tend to rev up when it's going to have the freeze up or dead cursor issues. I followed some advice to upload smcFanControl but I think I did something wrong. I can't select anything with it and it's done no good at all.
A recent annoying development is a half inch black band goes across the top and bottom of my monitor, robbing me of desktop real estate.
ALL of these annoyances with flashing, black bands and crashing disappear in Safe Boot, but that mode does not let me work in Aperture.
There have been a few more issues that I can't think of right now but these are the everyday problems. If anyone has the solution to these horrible disruptions, I will be eternally grateful.

I won't be able to try the Apple Hardware test right away because I don't have time to disconnect everything to run the test. I might also get into my computer to check for dust on the graphics card if I can find good instructions on removing it. While prowling the other topics from people having similar problems I came across this link:
    http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/Graphics/radeon_X1900XT/X1900XT_dust_buildup.html#sto rytop
Having a unit that looks that bad is a definite possibility for me as I have cats and dogs.
I'm confused about your logic board comment. Why did you say that's a good lifespan for a portable when I'm discussing my Mac Pro? Is my logic board listed in "About this Mac"? If so, where? My hard drive accidently got fried by a tech just before my APP ran out and I know quite a few things got replaced but I can't remember exactly what. I'm wondering if that is newer that the stock logic board that came with the computer.

  • IPhoto images appear as thumbnails but not full images

Trying to e-mail images, using either drag-and-drop or copy/paste shows a warning triangle in iPhoto or an empty file in the e-mail.
    Some images are OK.
Has there been a problem when iPhoto amends the library after an upgrade?
I'm running the latest version 9.5.1.
If I need to replace images using TimeMachine, how far do I need to go back please?
    Thanks in anticipation...
    g.

What happened directly before this problem occured? Was it directly after upgraded to iPhoto 9.5.1? Did you move your iPhoto library? Delete photos using the Finder? Where is your iPhoto library located?
warning triangle in iPhoto or an empty file in the e-mail.
This idicates that iPhoto has lost the connection between the thumbnails in the Browser and the original image files. The originals may be missing.
Too late   Thry to rebuild your iPhoto library with the First Aid Tools, or, if even that will not succeed, with iPhoto Library Manager.
The procedure is described here by Old Toad:
Rebuild iPhoto Version 11: Old Toadhttps://discussions.apple.com/message/22114274#22114274
Try first "Fix 1", then "Fix 2".

Wow, Karan Taneja, you've just embarrassed yourself on a worldwide support forum.  Not only is your post ridiculous and completely inappropriate for a technical support forum, but it also shows your ignorance as to whom you think the audience is.  Apple is not here.  It's users, like you.
If you would have spent half the time actually reading the Terms of Use of this forum that YOU agreed to by signing up to post, as you did composing that usesless, inappropriate post, you (and the rest of us on this forum) would have been much better off.

  • Bridge opens Raw thumbnails but not Preview?

In Bridge I can open Raw files from my Canon 6D as thumbnails but not as the large Preview. The files will open in Camera Raw 8.1 with no problem. I have Photoshop CS6 13.0, and Bridge 5.0.0.399. I am on a Mac Pro OS 10.8.4
    What can I do?

Thanks Curt. Went to Downloads, then to Product updates and there I found updates for all Adobe products; clicked on Bridge for Macintosh and downloaded 5.0.2.4; then clicked on Photoshop for Mac and downloaded CS6 version 13.0.4 (didn't have 13.1??). Everything is working properly now. And I have learned how to find updates at Adobe! Thanks again.

  • I imported photos from an old iPhoto (2001) to photo library and can now see them as thumbnails but not when I click on them. The screen is black cannot see or print either. Is there any way to salvage those old photos? I now use iLife09. OS 10.6

I imported photos from an old iPhoto (2001) to photo library and can now see them only as thumbnails but not when I click on them. The screen is black cannot see or print either. Is there any way to salvage those old photos? I now use iLife09. OS 10.6

Did you import the old iPhoto library into the new one? That's not what you want to do because you will import all of the original, modified and thumbnail files as if they were original files. Lots of duplicates and useless small photos.
Do you have a backup copy of the library that you imported into to?  If you do then bring it in and then use  iPhoto Library Manager to merge the two libraries into a new, 3rd library.
If you don't then you'll have to try to fix the current one and then cull out the duplicates and small useless photos as follows:  make a temporary, duplicate copy of your library and apply the three fixes in order as necessary.
    Fix #1
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your HD/User/Home()/ Library/Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your HD/User/Home()/Library /Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
    Fix #2
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #3
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
If this doesn't fix the problem you'll have to start over from scratch and create a new library from the files inside the Originals folder of your current library.  But first you should cull out the small photos that would be the thumbnails from the 2001 library.
Move the Originals folder to the Desktop, open and do a search for Kind=photo, File size is less than 10 KB.  That should find all of the thumbnail files which you can then drag to the Trash.  You might have to make that less than 50 KB. Then Import the remaining photos into a new iPhoto library.

With your phone plugged in, open Image Capture and see if the iPhone shows up.  If not, you are having a sync problem.  If it shows up in Image Capture, but not iTunes, I'd delete iTunes and reinstall it.

Try, in preferences, resetting 64 bit to 32 bits.  Should work fine.  the older vidoes, etc will not work with 64 bit.  Had the same problem/scare.  Let us know if this helps and works!
