Aperture 2.1 freezing

I was sharing my computer (and then my aperture 2 license) at home and I would like now to use my library somewhere else with another license. I installed on this other computer Aperture 2, and I can open the default sample library without trouble.
But then when I change in Preferences the library to be my own library, Aperture freezes either on the license/name screen, either right after clicking on "start using Aperture".
I tried to use an older version of the library (that used to work perfectly on Aperture 2 two weeks ago) using Time machine and I also tried to restore the library from a vault back-up. I also tried after those steps to rebuild the library when launching (with command+option). None of that works. Aperture keeps freezing when launched on my library.
When I speak of freezing, it is not exactly that. I still have a working menu bar, I can edit the preferences, but I can't quit aperture, and I have no other screen than the Aperture menu bar (I don't have the main window at all).
Any idea ?
Thanks

I finally got it working :
Delete username/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Aperture.plist
Then start Aperture on the working "sample" Library
Then uncheck in Preferences "share previews with iLife and iWork"
Quit Aperture
Restart Aperture on my Library.
No idea why all this is about...

  • Aperture 3 - Continuous freezing and library updating

Aperture seems great when it works but is updating my library of 6000 pictures regularly for no apparent reason and this at a speed of one picture every two seconds. The computer is a 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 and should be able to cope but the fans are running at top speed and Aperture is completely blocked. Aperture also freezes and aborts when I try to add music to my slideshows. Can the face recognition function be turned off? It seems to be running most of the time and I was wondering if it could be slowing the processes down. All pictures have been imported in their current (Lightroom based) location.

Faces does require a large overhead - you can disable it in the first tab of the preferences. You may also want to consider changing the prefs for "previews" - turn off "automatically generate previews" and set the preview size to something like quality 6 and set the pixel size to be approxiamately the size of your largest monitor's resolution.

  • Aperture 2 trial freezes occasionally

I'm using the Aperture 2 trial, downloaded from the apple site, and I would like to purchase it when my trial expires. The only thing is about 75% of the time when i launch the trial from my dock it gets to the splash screen and then freezes. If i force quit and then open it again immediately after the initial freeze it'll get to the splash screen then ask me if i want to continue, register, etc. like it normally does on launch.
Does anyone know why it usually freezes up at the initial splash screen?
    Thanks

I have the same problem, but more frequently. Like, ALWAYS. After working with Aperature enough to decide I wanted to buy it. I've got several thousand images imported already and all of a sudden the trial freezes at the splash screen and it's impossible to get beyond that point. Forcing Quit, even rebooting the Mac will not solve the problem. The last action I took was copying an existing Web theme folder and altering some of the HTML in the template pages of the copy but the freeze is unrelated to web gallery generation. There's something wrong at startup and now I'm faced with not being able to run the program, purchase it, and lose all the work I've already done with my photos in anticipation of buying the darned thing...

  • Aperture vault is freezing at 50% when updating!

I really need help on this! My aperture vault only seems to freeze and the progress bar is stuck at about 50%. I have to force quit aperture when this happens. I tried to make a new vault on a noter external disk. It is no help. I have a very powerful iMac. i7 SSD only one year old. Aperture version 3.3. The external disk is formated Mac OS Extended (journalført - norwegian Lion 10.7.4).
    This is bothering me very!!!!
    Someone!?

    Hi,
If you have followed all the methods mentioned in "Aperture 3: Troubleshooting Basics" http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3805?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US (repair and rebuild etc.) then I would advice to wait and let it work longer. It may seem to get stuck but if you wait (not 5 minutes but 5 or 20 hours) it may go through.
I have already had years issue that taking Vault backup takes tens of hours. I have tried all tricks mentioned in this forum (if you search you should find 20-30 threads about Vault being slow, freezing etc.). Everybody here knows better and says that it should not take that long and will advice you to do this and that, but if you look at those 20-30 threads not even half have resolution for the person who had the issue.
I'm backing up the library instead, from SSD to HD it takes 15 minutes with CCC (block copy including verify), and faster from SSD to SSD. Here is thread I opened to ask if this is OK:

  • Aperture/Mac Pro freeze in mid import

The computer freezes in the middle of Aperture imports. The first time it happened, I restarted, went back to Aperture and the software freezes up--from here, I can force quit. I've tried everything that I can think of to address this issue: I tried resetting preferences, with no result. I rebuilt my library, and that gave me access to Aperture again, but every time I try to import, the whole computer freezes halfway through. I uninstalled, reinstalled, it fixed the problem, but again, the computer freezes on import. I restored my library from the vault, again, problem fixed, then freezes up on import. I'm a pro, and I use aperture to upload client files to my ftp. I can't be without this program and my library. Any other suggestions? I'm desperate!!! (It's not a card reader or raw file issue, the same pics upload into iPhoto just fine--no problems. I upgraded to the new Mac Pro less than a month and have had no other problems. All other software etc. works perfectly.)

Please let me know if you find anything out about this problem. I'm about to download Lightroom and give up on Aperture for good. I don't want to do this because I have an aperture plugin that connects me with my pro lab and event hosting service. Now I'll have to manually size my images and get some ftp program like fetch. All of this is going to equal a lot more work for me. So if you resolve this issue, I would love to find out how. (I didn't have any problems before my last update, and the version on my MacBook Pro (not updated from 2.0) still seems to work. It's just so slow! you think it's an update issue?)

  • My aperture program keeps freezing up and my computer battery died but after plugging in and restarting now aperture won't open at all

Why wont my aperture open ???? Working on a clients project and need it ASAP. pLEASE HELP!!!!

If you need to reboot after updating then this usually means that files were in use and couldn't be updated.<br />
A possible candidate is in such cases is security software.
Boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to see if that helps.
You can also try to login as Administrator or possibly run Firefox once as Administrator via the right-click context menu.

  • Aperture 3 install freezes

    Hey guys,
I need help im trying to install aperture 3 but after I input the serial number it just stays stuck and I have to force quit it. Im running the newest version of snow leopard on my new 13 in macbook pro with 4gigs of ram

Sorry to hear you're still having problems. I've got another couple of ideas you might try which are much less drastic than the full system restore you suggested.
Rather than 'merely' reinstalling, follow [Apple's uninstall Aperture instructions|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3805|Aperture 3: Troubleshooting Basics] first (they're near the bottom of the page) - then reinstall.
When you're having your problem with the serial number, is that with Aperture v3.0.0 (straight off the original installer) or have you installed and then patched it to either v3.0.2, or even v3.0.3, before launching it to serialise it? Applying the serial number to v3.0.0 should work absolutely fine. When the product first came out, that was the only option for anyone. I would expect that you should also be able to install and patch before serialising it but, if that's what you're trying, perhaps there's a bug with that? If so, try serialising the application before patching...
    Hope something here might help...

    Gary

  • Aperture Freezing Up with NIK Viveza 2

I recently returned from a trip and began working on editing my photos using Aperture 3.1.2 and NIK plug-ins.  Aperture has been freezing up when I press save in Viveza 2 after making adjustments.  I have to force quit to close Aperture and begin again.  Has anyone else had this problem?
iMac with 8GB RAM and 2GB video memory. (running OS X 10.6.7)
    Thanks,
    Bill

I've used the Nik plugins in the past and the only one which gave me some minor problems was the HDR effects one.
Do you have the latest version of Viveza 2 installed?  How long have you waited after saving before deciding it was frozen?
One thing you can try is to run Aperture in 32 bit mode. Some older plugins could cause troubles if Apeture was in 64 bit mode. To run in 32 bit mode locate Aperture in the finder right click and select Show Info. In the Info window select 32 bit mode.
And of course contact NIK they might have some information about this and if nit I'n sure they'd like to hear about it.

  • Aperture 2 Freezes on Load

Aperture 2 is freezing (beach ball) on load. Library projects list appears, but nothing else happens.
This problem likely started during an import of the iPhoto Library (as referenced files). During import, a system crash occurred and I was forced to reboot. When I logged in, the system crashed again and I rebooted. Now Aperture gets stuck loading my library.
I have removed the permissions file, removed the Application Support folder for Aperture, re-installed Aperture, copied my library (from a separate folder on the same disk as my Time Machine backups) to the main machine, repaired permissions, but nothing has worked. The problem seems to have something to do with the database in my library, as the crash comes from sqlite3_step.
I'd like to recover my library, as I have no backup (I hadn't realized the TM-Aperture problem was fixed in 10.5.2). I'm wondering if manually removing the half-imported iPhoto import could fix the problem, but just removing that folder from the library package doesn't seem to suffice.
    Here is the crash report:

So, I seem to have solved my problem. Removing the "Library.apdb" file didn't solve the problem, as Aperture just regenerated an empty file, so all of the library was there in the Aperture Library package, but none of it was accessible within aperture.
Instead, I replaced the "Library.apdb" file with the older version from the backed-up Aperture Library from the 1.5 version. On starting Aperture, it gave me a warning about inconsistencies in the database and restarted and regenerated a new version. Voila, it worked. It would be nice if you could just do that manually (if I didn't have the other file I would have had a problem).

  • Aperture freezes when trying to export photo

Everytime I edit a photo in Aperture, the program freezes when I try to export the photo.  Why?  I can't even "force close" the program, I have to turn off the computer!

I can't even "force close" the program, I have to turn off the computer!
Try to send a signal from the Terminal, as described in this user tip:
If Aperture is unresponsive, how to quit?
Everytime I edit a photo in Aperture, the program freezes when I try to export the photo.
    What is your Aperture version?
Have you tried any trouble shooting steps?
First of all check, if you have enough free disk space for the export. The oprating system needs working space in addition to the size of the of the exported image file. Keep at least 10GB free.
Where are you exporting to? To a folder on your system drive or an external drive? Do you have write permissions on that folder?
Try to repair your Aperture library - see this Manual page:
Repairing and Rebuilding Your Aperture Library: Aperture 3 User Manual
If repairing the database  does not help, try "repair permissions" as well, and finally "Rebuild".  Make a backup of your library, before trying to rebuild.

  • Burning pics to DVD from Aperture Project

I am trying to burn pics to a DVD from an Aperture project(copies for friends who were on the trip). I put in the DVD, open disk utility, select Aperture and everything freezes or slows down to a crawl. It has become so much of a problem that I am now loading the pics onto an old PC and burning the DVDs that way. Any thoughts/insights/or suggestion would be appreciated.

If you are talking about a data DVD, and not a video DVD slideshow, then the proper sequence is to put the disk in, then in Aperture select all the photos, and then use Export and target the DVD disk. Would be the same if using a CD, and only enough photos to fit on it. Then when it completes the Export, click to burn the DVD.
More info about what you are trying to do, please.

  • Aperture 2.1.1 upgrade problem

I upgraded to 2.1.1 and cannot access Aperture anymore. I get the first screen and then it freezes. It does not open and the only way to close is Force Quit.
I have a genuine serial number (bought the software at Apple) and reinstalled the upgrade from the Aplle website directly to retry. The problem was the same.
I opened Aperture pressing the option key to rebuild the library. That did it in the background but I am still on the opening screen and it is frozen.
    Any idea?
    Thanks

    UPDATE:
OK, looks like I was being a little optimistic. After more testing (different apps running in the background, network volumees mounted, etc..) I've come to the conclusion that the problem is caused by the following:
    - I have my vault set up on a networked (AFS) drive. (which is not supported by Apple, see link at end*). If the network volume is not mounted, Aperture starts and functions correctly. However, with the network volume mounted, Aperture once again freezes at the "Splash Screen".
This is repeatable - I've mounted/unmounted the network volume multiple times, and Aperture always exhibits the same behaviour:-
    unmounted - no problems
    mounted - freeze at startup
So, I guess (short term?) solution is to move my vault onto an external drive...

  • Aperture updated to 3.4.5 is now crashing on startup.

I updated form 3.4.4. I was able to open the program, import some photos from my camera, post online and quit. Now when opening Aperture it immediately hangs and freezes. My activity monitor shows CPU usage at 247% and 20 threads being utilized and that the process is non responsize.
Any suggestion as to how to fix this?
This is on my 27" iMac running OSX 10.8.4

Now when opening Aperture it immediately hangs and freezes. My activity monitor shows CPU usage at 247% and 20 threads being utilized and that the process is non responsize.
That looks like a freeze caused by Aperture not being able to process the imported image files, when trying to render previews or the library may need repairing.
Can you launch Aperture, if you defer the generation of previews? To do that, hold down the shift-key ⇧ firmly, while you launch Aperture by double clicking the Aperture icon.
If Aperture launches without freeze, then one of your most recently imported images or videos cannot be processed. Turn on the Activity viewer (Fom the main menu bar: Windows > Show Activity) and then try to start the rendering of previews manually. The Activity viewer will show you, which images are currently being processed. Remember the filename and remove that file from the Paerture library.
If deferring Preview generation does not help, try, if Aperure is working well from a different user account: (see: Isolating an issue by using another user account) and post back with your results.

  • What's the best way to export Photos from Aperture to iPhoto

    Hi,
    so heres the deal:
My father has a really old/slow mac and whenever he tries to export more than like 3 photos from aperture the computer freezes.
So to get his photos i thaught i could just copy his aperture library onto my external hd.
but will i be able to import the photos into iphoto? and i'd like to not have the originals but the edited photos.
or will i have to export the photos from aperture (e.g. with my brothers, faster mac...)

Paul, do your father and you have compatible versions of iPhoto and Aperture?  Aperture 3.3 and iPhoto 9.3 or later?
Aperture 3.3: Using a unified photo library with iPhoto and Aperture
With the new, unified library architecture you can simply open an Aperture library in iPhoto - no need to import anything.
If the Aperture library is not compatible, from an older Aperture version, you can try to export the versions on your brother's mac (file > Export > Versions).
My father has a really old/slow mac and whenever he tries to export more than like 3 photos from aperture the computer freezes.
That is not normal, however old the mac is.
Either his hard drive is too full and needs freeing disk space, or he has imported corrupted images, or his Aperture library needs repairing or rebuilding.  He should try to repair his library, if he has used "force quit" on Aperture.  See: Repairing and Rebuilding Your Aperture Library: Aperture 3 User Manual

Aperture is recently freezing up computer and there is no way to get to any other application without turning off computer to reboot.  Are other people having the same problem recently.

Having the same issue with Aperture.
Trouble started after upgrading to version 3.2.3.
Initially would freeze and if left alone for a few minutes would be fine. Now heavy editing after about 20 photos causes screen to goes black. No warning, no nothing just all of a sudden, black. Have to press button at back of computer to re-boot. I am a fraid to have other programs open because of potential lost data.

Have 4 different libraries in Aperture. All have been repaired. Permissions and Database. I am holding out on re-building as a last resort. Plug ins are all up to date. Topaz Labs and Perfect Photo Suite. Also PS Elements 9 which is hardly ever used.
Always worked fine until the upgrade, now I do not trust it. This has brought my workflow to a grinding halt. Investing in Lightroom. Support is also useless when you spend forever trying to get them then you know morte than they do and they tell you it will be $100 to go over yoyur problem!
