Aperture 2.1 (Trial), NEF, 14 bit

disclaimer: I'm new to digital photo stuff...
question: As of 8 May 2008, does Aperture 2.1 support NEF files that are 14 bit?
My files are coming from the Nikon Coolscan V ED.
Aperture 2.1 can open 14 bit TIFF file coming from the Coolscan,
but the 14 bit NEF files results in an unsupported format message in Aperture.
(even though the thumbnail can be seen)
Is it my system?
Is it the 14 bit NEF file?
Is it Aperture?
Please help

Here's a note on Vuescan's RAW files from Ed Hamrick, claiming they are just "normal TIFF files with 3 bits per pixel:"
http://www.openraw.org/node/1546
There are a number of discussions on the Coolscan RAW format as well... all saying it's a TIFF wrapped in a Nikon "RAW" wrapper. I haven't really felt like digging into it... I just scan as TIFF and it works great. Frankly, I use Vuescan as I've found Nikon Scan to be rather flaky, and it hasn't been updated in like 4 years so it's not an Intel-native application. Vuescan is well supported by Ed Hamrick.
As far as RAW files and the demosaic process of converting the RAW data into RGB values... there are tomes written on it. It's a deep subject, beyond the scope of this post

  • Cannot download aperture when using trial version and all photo work will be lost if delete trial version

App Store will not download aperture when using trial version and all 30 days of photo work will be lost if delete trial version to be able to purchase Aperture download version???  any ideas?

Your Aperture library is not deleted when you delete Aperture from the Applications folder. Neither are your settings BTW.
Do make certain your library is backed up!

  • Full Aperture vs. Trial?

    Hello
what is the big differens on the full Aperture and the trial version? what do you get on the DVD/CD extra??

The DVD includes the manuals and sample projects.
Also, per the trial page on apple.com: "The Aperture 2 trial cannot upgrade a library created by Aperture 1.5. Upgrading 1.x libraries is supported only in “licensed” versions of Aperture 2, as opening an earlier 1.x library with the Aperture 2 trial would permanently “upgrade” the library."

  • Aperture 2 not importing .nef images from scanner... works in LR2 though.

    Hi,
I have been looking at Aperture 2 and Lightroom 2 recently to see which one I'd like to use long term. I generally feel more comfortable with Aperture and it's controls (the sliding scale controls vs increase/decrease buttons) and Aperture's auto grouping of master and adjusted virtual copies but while Lightroom imports the range of image types I have, Aperture refuses to display the .nef images I have from negative scans. I can see the thumbnail but the preview is the "Unsupported Image Format" box. I have Camera RAW 5.2 installed on the computer and Photoshop CS3, which also can't open my .nef files.
As background, I have a Powermac G5 dual 2.5GHz with 3.5GB ram running OSX (10.5.6). I'm scanning from a Nikon Super Coolscan 4000ED using Nikon Scan 4 at full resolution (4000dpi) to 14 bit .nef format raw files (~130MB/image). The Aperture version is 2.1.2
I can't figure out weather it's something with Aperture or something with my system, considering lack of PS support (even after swapping in the latest Camera Raw plugin into the System Library).
Anyone have any thoughts? I'd like to be able to get this sorted before I have to make a definitive choice.
    Thanks

    @MacDLS-
It was really either 16-bit Nef or Tiff and it was a legacy decision that I've just lived with. I get that there are differences between a Camera Nef and a Scanner Nef as the camera imprints metadata in there that is irrelevant in the case of the scans and that the Scanner is recording R, G and B data for each pixel but whatever. I gathered that if I used Tiff, my saves would be permanent, similar to jpeg, whereas Nef is Raw-like in the sense that I can reverse adjustments to the master, which is more appealing than duplicating every Tiff for a mater copy and an adjustment copy (+ other adjustment copies). But I could easily be misguided, I'm no pro.
Another consideration was that many of these scans are unlikely to see future rescans, so it's not like I am of the mindset that I will just be rescanning stuff with the next super-scanner of the future down the line. These are the archival digital negatives as far as I'm concerned.
As far as being only useful in Nikon software, they do work fine in Lightroom 2 and...
I realized CameraRaw version 5.XX is CS4 specific and was the limiting factor for Photoshop. I reverted to the CameraRaw 4.6 plugin and everything was gravy as far as Photoshop... still no luck with Aperture 2 though.
So Nikon Scanned Nef files, go for Adobe software, no go for Aperture... unless I'm 'doing it wrong' ???

  • Aperture 3 only runs 32 bit.....hov to get 64 bit ?

    Perculiar.
I had Aperture 2, bought the upgrade to 3. Installed and upgraded AP2-library to AP3.
Running 10.6.2 on mbp unibody 4gb ram and also the Imac in my signature, same happens in both computers.
When i right click on aperture.app, show info, i cant do the checkmark 32 bit, this option is not shown in the info-pane. (a friend of mine installed the trial version, he have the option...)
Further, when i go through "about this mac", choose software, applications, then aperture, it says "no" to 64 bit
(Beside of that for both systems aperture are slow/unstable...)

    OK,
Just found another topic talking about the same.

  • Sap netweaver 7 trial  64 bit windows 7 problems with tables sflights

Hello , i succesfully installed Sap netweaver 7 trial development edition  64 bit on windows 7 long ago but since the first time
    i realized something went wrong.
Actually the system works perfectly but the usual educational tables (flights, booking etc etc) are all empty.
Is there a way i can fill them easily?
Plus the userid and password given(DDIC . BCUSER ) didn't work, i had to enter as SAP* and change the password and then to make bcuser as developer user as from the beginning it wasn't automatically set.
What i really need now is to fill the educational tables coz i can't do any test without data in them.
    Can you help pls?
    Thanks

i solved it with a sabc_data_generator program made rightly for test tables. It fills automatically all tables for test pourposes.
    I sokved it myself.

  • Importing images with Aperture 2.1 Trial

I've installed the latest trial version of Aperture and have tried importing images from one of my external hard discs, but having navigated to the folder containing the images I want to download, (all of which are RAW files from my Nikon D300), no thumbnails show up and Aperture tells me there are no images that I can import.
I've navigated to other folders that contain various other kinds of image files, (e.g. .JPG and .TIF files), and still Aperture won't display them for import. However, when I connect my camera direct to my laptop and navigate to its folder, no problem! Up come the thumbnails and I can import as many as I want.
Does anyone have any idea what might be going wrong? i.e. Why can't I import RAW files from my external hard disc?
    Many thnaks,
    Chris

I'm having the opposite trouble. All of a sudden, Aperture refuses to show thumbnails or download images from my Nikon D-50, but I can get them using Image Capture and then import from the hard disk.

  • How do I purchase Aperture once the Trial software is installed?

I installed the Trial Version of Aperture 3, moved over just a few photos, liked it, moved over all of my photos and really liked it (once everything settled down).
So, I now have three libraries and I'm going through the Faces part, getting all my photos in order. I figure it's time to go ahead and pay for the software, since it looks like a keeper.
So, the next time I open Aperture 3, I click on the Buy button. It takes me to the App Store / Aperture 3 window. Up in the corner is the $79.99 price, so I click on that, and then and then I click on Buy App. An error box pops up, "We could no complete your purchase. Aperture is already installed on this computer. Choose Software Update from the Apple menu to check for available updates."
    Huh.
Just in case they aren't kidding, I close that error window, close the App Store, and then click on the Software update... menu option. After running for a few minutes, it comes back and tells me that my software is up to date.
So, now I'm a little concerned. Please tell me there's a way to upgrade my Aperture 3 trial without losing all of the work I just put in. Any thoughts?

That nailed it. I was worried about losing the work I had put in, but that was a non-issue.
After deleting Aperture from the Applications folder, I purchased, downloaded and installed from the App Store. When I opened Aperture, it found all of the Libraries that I had created. Woo-hoo!!!
Thank you for the quck reply, leonieDF. You rock!!!

  • Aperture 3.0 trial library cant reimport into 3.1.1 upgrade

I am trying Aperture since my iphoto libraries were getting hard to manage and date back to 2001. I referenced all the old iphoto libraries which I had moved from my overly full macbook to the data portion of my time machine hd. I was having trouble with it saying processing all the time and somehow updated the trial software to the newer version. Now when I open aperture it wants to create a new trial library and when I go to open other and select what I think is the one that I had working, it wants to relaunch and at relaunch then I am back in the circle of create new. Yesterday it did seem to update to the new version but now I can't reopen it to keep playing around to see if it will help my woes of organization and internal harddrive space. Thanks for any thoughts and direction.

I tried the import via a new library but it could not due to data missing that is needed. ?? You are correct in that I have not purchased it as I was using the trial first to help decide between it and other options I also tried double clicking on the library and that did not work as it wants to leave old libraries untouched I suppose due to the trial aspect.

  • Aperture confuses orf and nef and avi raw files. Suggestions on what to do?

Just used a new Olympus E-M5 in Italy and Germany, after many years of using Nikon products, most recently a D700 with fast glass. I have also used Aperture from version 1.0. Olympus RAW file format is .ORF. As I have uploaded the images into Aperture from the SD cards, I have just found that on one card about 100 files are mis-identified in Aperture's import window as either .NEF or .AVI files, rather than the .ORF files that they are. They are identified as .ORF files on the card itself.
I have not yet imported them and wondered if anyone has any thoughts about the wisdom of: (1) uploading them as they are, as the images seem to be fine; (2) batch changing the file extension to .ORF once they have been imported; (3) trying some variant of drag and drop, or moving the files to a new folder and importing from there; (4) something totally different and better.
Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
P.S. For those of you tired of tugging around big bodies and fast (and heavy) glass, the move to the E-M5 has been wonderful. Great Zeiss and Leica lenses are available (and much lighter!) and the images are magnificent, though smaller, in the 4/3 format.

How are you imorting from your Olympus? Directly from the camera or from a card reader? With some cameras the results can be different, if imported directly from the camea. If possible, use a card reader.
    My D700 used compact flash, so this SD card has never been in a Nikon camera;
That is not what I meant - I thought that maybe this particular card has a corrupted filesystem and needs reformatting. Can you check with a different card, if all is o.k. for newer photos?
Do you have any thoughts about changing the file extension from .NEF to .ORF?
If it are truely .ORF files, it should not matter, how you call the file. But you need to do it before importing to Aperture. Afterwards renaming may cause Aperture to lose the connection between master and version.
I just made the following test: I renamed a Canon raw file (".CR2") to  Nikon raw (".NEF") in the Finder and reimported the renamed file. In spite of the misleading ,NEF extension, Aperture recognized the file by its attributes as a Canon Raw, as this screenshot ist showing, because of the EXIF, also when I renamed the file to "-ORF"- And the "Raw Fine Tuning" brick shows clearly, that independent of the file name extension the correct raw develepment, that for the Canon EOS will be used.
But the Finder will show the "Kind" of the "NEF" file as "Nikon Electronic Format". So if it bothers you, rename the file.
Have you by any chance set a file renaming preset in the "Import" panel? HAve a look at the "Rename Files" brick in the "Import" panel and check the preset, that is used by going to "Edit".

  • New to aperture, trying to import .nef files but get error

Hi, I'm new to Aperture and I have a Nikon D7100.  I'm trying to import my photos which were shot in .NEF format (Nikon RAW) butI get an error message.  When I insert the SD card, I see the thumbnails.  I made a new project and them clicked on "import checked" but it gives me a black square with an erro that the format is not supported? Help!

When you are shooting RAW with your camera, keep in mind, that not all raw formats for your camera are supported.
The list of supported cameras (OS X Mavericks: Supported digital camera RAW formats) has a footnote for the Nikon D810†:
    †Nikon RAW L format only.
So don't change the compression settings in your camera.  There is not yet a corresponding list for Yosemite, so I am not sure, if the same restrictions still apply.

  • Aperture 3.1 (trial) crashes constantly.

I am trying Aperture trial 3.1 (to see if I want to buy it). I am trying to create a photo book of a trip overseas, and Aperture crashes constantly. I have installed it on two different computers, and have mixed results with each. On one computer, I have all my library (39,000+pics), and most of the time it wont even load the book. I have installed it on another mac, using only 200 some photos in the book, and the book loads, but every time I try to insert an image, it crashes. My primary computer is an iMac G5, 20 inch screen, 2.16ghz Intel core Duo processor, with 2gb RAM running Lion 10.7.1 The secondary is a MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2009), Intel core 2 Duo 2.66ghz, 4gb RAM, running Lion 10.7.1. Any help with this would be appreciated. Its kind of making me angry ('ya know, like the birds?). Anyways, thanks for your help in advance.
    -Thomas

Nevermind. Resolved it myself. Had to pull a Windows "feature" and reboot the laptop.

  • Buying Aperture 3 after trial

Before you say, I know there are other posts here about this issue, but most of those feature people who had Aperture 1 or 2, but I haven't.  If there are other posts that cover this please link the solution.
I downloaded the 30 day trial but it is now refusing to let me purchase the full version.  I now get the message saying "buy", "authorise" or "quit".
Authorise asks for a serial, but as i don't have a previous version I have no such code.
'Buy' eventually opens the Mac AppStore on the purchase page, but when I click purchase it comes up with the following
    - "Aperture is already installed on this computer. Choose Software Update from the Apple menu to check for available updates."
When I go through the Software Update it says nothing needs updating.
Any ideas, that don't involve removing the App and reinstalling as I have procesed works in my Aperture library that I'd like to maintain.

Removing the Trial Version will not harm your Aperture Library. You really only need to remove the Trial Application from the Applications Folder (or rename it) to be able to download the full version from the AppStore - that should fix the complaints. The full version will be able to open and upgrade your current Aperture Library.

P.S. Is your signature current? Aperture 3.2.2 needs OS 10.6.8 or later.

  • Aperture's Rendering of NEF Files

This might be a very elementary question, but where does Aperture get the RAW fine tuning settings to apply to NEF Files? I shoot with a Nikon D90 and shoot both NEF and JPEG. I usually import both into Aperture, with the NEF as Master. I know some settings have to be applied to the master file so that Aperture can render the picture. I noticed that in the Adjustments RAW Fine Tuning brick, the Camera is identified as the Nikon D90, and there are settings already applied. I know I didn't choose these settings, and I'm wondering how did Aperture decided on these particular settings. I also have some NEF's taken with a Nikon D60 and I noticed that these adjustment settings are different than those for the D90. I'm pretty sure I didn't create these settings. I'm just curious. For the most part the settings give a good rendering.

Per camera RAW rendering settings are set at system level in your operating system and are updated from time to time with new system releases.
The same camera specific settings are used for Aperture, iPhoto, preview etc.
Aperture allows you to tweak these settings using the RAW fine tuning panel and also allows you to save and apply additional presets that you may wish to use.
All of this happens prior to the processing setting that you apply through the main bricks in Aperture.
