Aperture 2 and Unsupported Format After Image Adjustments

I was making tonal adjustments to a Nikon D3 RAW photo in "Browser Only" view mode. When I closed the adjustments HUD, the image was replaced with the red "Unsupported Format" window. I had to restart Aperture to get back to the photo. Sounds like an interesting bug.
Anyone else seen this?

...this appears to be a common issue - I just posted another message on a similar thread:
http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=6634081#6634081
Same issues here: Canon D5, after some editing I was getting the red block; and a restart of Aperture cured it (for now)
As mentioned in the other thread: maybe it has to do with setting the camera to store both the RAW and a (small) .jpeg? I haven't seen it appear in another series imported just before - and edited just before in Aperture - where the camera only stored the RAW on the card...
Any more experiences?

Help, I had aperture open and working on a image and did not have a battery in and bumped the power off. As a result it will not open my master, it is locked. when I try to open that Library  it says There was an error opening the database for the library. I have tried every thing. I updated the other libr but now it will not open the main to update. What do I do?

Try starting Aperture with the command and option keys held down.  You'll get 3 options.
Try each, starting at the top, in order, checking after each to see if it fixes the issue.

  • Aperture suddenly displaying "unsupported format" for Nikon D300s RAW files

I am using Aperture 3.1.3 on my iMac 24 with Snow Leopard 10.6.8.   A couple of days ago I applied an update for Aperture RAW files that was in my update list, even though I don't use any of the cameras involved.
After that update Aperture gives me an "unsupported format" error on all my Nikon D300s RAW files. Every RAW file in the library.  I have never had a problem with this at any time over the last 2+ years of using Aperture.
I have tried using time machine and rolling Aperture back to the end of July (my most recent backup) along with rolling back the RAW file plist. I then did a repair permissions, and reimported the photos after this.  I have rebooted numerous times.  All to no avail.  I have not yet tried a library rebuild that would be next if I must.
I use a Referenced library, so I was able to check out individual RAW files with Adobe Camera RAW.   They open fine so there is no file corruption issue.
Any thoughts on what might be happening?  Any other file(s) associated with RAW conversion that I might need to roll back?   I do not see any mention of a problem like this when searching the web or the forum (although I may have missed something by not searching the correct terms).
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

The raw camera bundle is  /System/Library/CoreServices/RawCamera.bundle
Go to /System/Library/CoreServices with the Finder, locate the the RawCamera.bundle package, select it and then do a File->Get Info on the package. You should have version 3.8.0, that is the latest and the one that you should have downloaded last week. If it is not 3.8.0 stop here and post back what version you do have, something isn't right.
Assuming you have 3.8.0  use the Finder to navigate to /System/Library/CoreServices and then delete the RawCamera.bundle package. The Finder will ask you to authorize the delete.
Then go to Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 3.7 download and install it. That will put you back to the last CameraRaw update before this one.
See if that fixes your problem.
As always when messing around with system files it is possible to mess things up so make sure you have a good backup before proceeding, And if any of these instructions make you nervous you might want to hold off doing them.
    good luck

  • Unsupported format after burning on DVD Player

I burn many discs on iDVD and always do it the same way - I have found that a few of the discs are unable to be read on my player after burning.  So some work fine and some cannot be read in the Player.  I get the message "Unsupported Format" on my player.  Any suggestions?

If iDVD didn't have sound before you authored the DVD, you won't have sound after the DVD is created.  Did you create a self contained Quicktime movie out of your editing system before importing into iDVD?  Did the Quicktime file have sound in the Quicktime Player?  Here's an article I wrote about transferring your HD footage to DVD.  You need to break the process up into steps to avoid problems.

  • How can I retrieve Aperture Previews and Thumbnails directly after a corrupt hard drive corrupted Masters?

I have several old albums where JPG's were apparently corrupted on an old striped RAID.
Aperture still shows the previews (quite large, thankfully) for these old images.
But when Aperture tries to refresh the preview, the previews mimic the corrupt masters.  To stop the bleeding, so to speak, I renamed my Master directory so Aperture doesn't update previews for these corrupt JPGs.  However, I'd really like to save these previews, even if not at full resolution. Some folders
How can I retrieve Aperture Previews and Thumbnails for these items?
    My process so far:
    1) Show package contents on Aperture Library.
    2) Navigate to Previews
         - some directories are here, some are missing
         - for those that are here, back up elsewhere and mission accomplished
         - for those that are missing, try to recover the thumbnails at least...
    3) Navigate to Thumbnails
         - Lots more directories here. Likely the ones I'm looking for. (but they have strange hash names, so it's hard to say)
         - BUT, they only show large "AP.Thumbnails" files, no separate image file
The big answer I'm looking for... How to recover images missing from Preview directory and/or AP.Thumbnails files? (short of taking screenshots)

It would be nice to know your Aperture and OS version, there have been changes over the years.
The big answer I'm looking for... How to recover images missing from Preview directory and/or AP.Thumbnails files? (short of taking screenshots)
If you open the library in Aperture you can drag the preview images out of the browser and place them in a folder on your HD.  If you cannot open the library then you will have to resort to going into the library package and rooting around.  There was a big  change with the library layout from Aperture 2 to 3 so knowing the version would really help here.

  • Excel tables... columns and row formatting after I update the indesign page

When my excel table gets updated in indesign I lose formatting (hight/wide) for the columns&rows. There are 26 columns and each one is a difference size. Do I have to formatting (hight&wide) each column and row every time the excel table is updated?

We have many publications with statistical tables, which are done in excel. We want to try to do some publications with only tables and do it in-house. The problem is when we place the table in indesign and finish formatting the table. We will get a updated table that needs to be updated in indesign. But when we do we update we lose all of the indesign formatting. Fixing the fonts, type size, etc is easy but how do we get back the all column widths.

  • Aperture black and white filters making images blotchy

    Hello All!
I'm having some odd issues with Aperture and using the black and white filters: mainly red and orange filters. I have tested this with different cameras (all raw) including Nikon D700, Olympus E-M5, Canon 5D mk3, Nikon D800; all exibit the same issue. I have also had a friend test this on Lightroom and the problem did not appear.
Picture a landscape with a blue sky. Upon adding a red filter, and sometimes orange, the dramatic dark sky one would expect with such filters becomes blotchy. It looks somewhat like bad JPEG compression or noise from high ISO images but these pictures are all generally ISO 100 or 200. Sadly, this prevents me from printing these images so I've had to find other ways of processing them. Even when exported as a 16-bit TIFF, the problem persists.
Anyone have any thoughts? Experienced this themselves? Thanks for any thoughts!

Thanks Kirby... I have checked the channels but perhaps there is something I'm missing. Here is a screenshot of a random image I have but it shows the issue well. These are at 100%, ISO 200, red, orange, no filter (respectively). The histogram is from the original. No other post processing done. The red is the worst offender... the orange isn't as bad but it can be worse on certain images.

  • Windows 8.1 x64 blank start and apps screen after image

I am trying to build an image with SCCM 2012 R2 (CU1)
I have created a build and capture task, to create a base sysprep'ed Windows 8.1 wim image file.  This runs successfully
If I try and deploy the image, it completes but when any user logs in, they get black desktop wallpaper and blank start and all apps screen. Also they are unable to right click on the start button.
I have run SFC /scannow command and rebooted, still the issue.
I have also build the machine from scratch using the dvd and I don't get the problem.
    Thanks
    Gareth

    Hi,
Since the Windows 8.1.wim file is generated and ran successfully, also you build the image from the DVD, there is no problem, this problem might lie in the process you deployed it .
I think you have added some configuration or something like group policy during the deployment process to customize the wallpaper or desktop icon, System Center will give professional answer about this, I think you can post it at the System Center forum:

  • Is there any way to expand both the OSX and Bootcamp partitions after imaging the drive to a larger HDD?

Hey all.  I have been searching forums and racking my brain to find a way to fix an issue I am having with my Late 2011 13" MBP.  SInce I wasn't able to find an answer, I figured it was time for reach out to the community.
I purchased a Late 2011 13" Core i5 MBP that had a bad HDD from a friend.  I replaced the HDD with an old 100GB SATA drive I had lying around.  My mistake was thinking that it was a 1TB drive.  Regardless, I was able to reinstall Lion to the new HDD and get the machine up and running.  Once that was working, I went ahead and upgraded to Mountain Lion with no issues, then I unstalled Boot Camp and Windows 8.  Everything installed without a hitch and was working great.  Right about that time I realized that I had almost no free hard drive space and discovered my error (the 100GB HDD).
I pulled the HDD and put in in my ASUS G74SX laptop along with a Seagate 750GB Hybrid Drive and used Clonezilla to do a hardware-to-hardware clone of the drive.  When it was completed, I put the 750GB Hybrid drive in the MBP and it booted right up with no problems.  I was also able to switch back and forth from my Boot Camp drive and everything appears to be working as it should.
The only problem I have is that both the OSX partition and the Boot Camp partition are still the same size as they were before I cloned the drive.  Try as I might, I can't find any way to expand either one to use the additional 650GB of space that is sitting on the drive unused.  Disk Utility won't allow me to expand the partitions unless the free space is contiguous with the drives.
Does anyone know of a utility that I can use to fix my problem?  I really don't want to reload everything from scratch.
    Thanks,
    Scott

You need to combine the libraries on one computer. Otherwise you'll be constantly erasing your iTunes content as you switch computers. iPhone will only sync or manually manage iTunes content with ONE computer at a time.

  • Aperture 3 and photoshop cs5 compatibility???

I have an iMAC with 10.6.4, Recently installed Aperture 3.0.3.
After making adjustments in Aperture, or even if i don't, I cannot not export the RAW image in Photoshop CS5. Yes, I have the settings in Preferences set to export into CS5
The "processing" signal is perpetually spinning. Photoshop opens but an error stating it can't open file due to an end file extension?
    OR i get this..
This image cannot be rendered for editing because Aperture does not support the image format.
    Any suggestions?
I really like the layout of Aperture and the ability to catalogue my images….I have over a TERABYTE in images to catalogue. But I wont use this program if I cant ge this resolved.

    I want ANSWERS not speculation.
The software is designed to open images into CS5 photoshop in the PSD format, it isn't working.
*If ANYONE has REAL experience and KNOWS what they are talking about then please please say so, if not then I'm not interested in speculation.*
I am ready to UNinstal this software a recommend it ONLY to the hobbyists and NOT to professionals!
With that attitude I'm shocked that people aren't just tripping over each other to help you.
I would think any "professional" would KNOW that for one, RAW isn't a standardized format and two, that Canon EOS cameras let you choose from 3 RAW types...you would have had to have seen those other two choices when setting up the camera so yes, they do in fact exist...
And Aperture is NOT "designed to open images into CS5 photoshop in the PSD format...", that is only one of the many features of the software. The software was designed to catalogue images and offer some light editing features.
Maybe being a "Dr." you're not accustomed to not knowing something or asking for help, but you should really at least try to act like a human being when people are spending their time trying to help you figure out something you can't figure out on your own.
I don't see any more of your scathing replies so I'm guessing someone's solution worked for you....not surprised in the least that you didn't have the common courtesy to at least reply with a "thanks".
As for your recommendations, save them. Your problem has nothing to do with the caliber or status of the software and everything to do with user error.

  • Strange "unsupported format" error with jpegs

I'm trying to help a friend who is running the most recent version of Aperture 3 (all updates installed). When we import a single jpeg from her hard drive, it comes into Aperture with the "unsupported format" icon and an exclamation mark where the preview should be. Double clicking the thumbnail opens the same error in the viewer, so it's not just an issue of the preview. The files themselves are fine and are named with the proper extension.
If we import 2 images at the same time, one comes in okay, and one does not. Importing 3 at a time yeilds 2 good, one bad. So, essentially, there is always just one image that is bad. It will successfully import the very same file that it rejected moments before as long as it is not the only file being imported. Make sense?
This is not a RAM or hard drive space issue. The only thing I think it may be is that she is running 10.6.7 (on a quad core Mac Pro). I'm wondering if the OS update to 10.6.8 resolves this particular issue. I will definitely update it as soon as I can, but I need to know if it could be something else. (I'm not with the machine now, and I need to bring the solution with me because she is not at a location where she can download the update herself.) Has anyone else seen this behavior before?
Thanks in advance for any helpful suggestions. This has me stumped!

Upgrade and then see.  10.6.8 is the current minimum requirement.

Working in Aperture 2, I get intermittant blank screen and "unsupported format" error message when in edit view.  No problems in thumbnail view.  Only format used is CR2 (Canon RAW).  The only way to clear error is by exiting Aperture and re-starting.  Anyone else seen this / have a fix?

A Loud Cheer Is Heard From The Crowd!!!
OK, sucess with Vista Ultimate. Monday, I can check it out with XP, but I am predicting that will be a success as well.
Being brand new to the world of video and Premier, everything I do is an act of faith at this point. What I was reacting to with my previous comment was the fear that working with the files was not going to be a staright forward Import, Modify, Export Final Product path. I was afraid I'd have to make a detour to import into some intermediate format, then bring it into Premiere.
Glad that's not the case at all!
I will do my best to report sometime on Monday if XP is as straightforward as Vista. If Idon't have a problem, I will be real curious what caused the problem qim010 is reporting.
Regarding AVCHD . . .  are there different "flavors"? From my still photography background, I found that RAW is not the same across the board: Nikon RAW is not quite the same as Olympus RAW and, at least when I got my first Olympus that did raw, there was differences withing the Olympus line. I had to wait a while for the an update to Photoshop even though an older version of Olympus RAW could be read. Maybe that is why qim010 is reporting a difficulty with Sony AVCHD.

  • Aperture 3 and processor configurations

My MBP  c2d developed the "Black Screen of Death" and is out of warranty and also that extra warranty for the extra defective Nvidia chips, so I need to upgrade.
Since my only application which even remotely taxed the MBP was Aperture 3(and combining giant RAW images in DOUBLETAKE), and since I'm not made of money, I need to find the best bang for the buck, which eliminates such exotic things as $500 SSD drives.
ITS A GIVEN need to max out the RAM to probably 12 gigs, and having at least a 500 gig 7200 HD is necessary.  And there are such software things as modifying the prefs, keeping the program current, and removing the caches to keep the speed up.
BUT....  I have not been able to determine whether Aperture 3
    1.  ....actually uses the four cores in a quad core, or
    2.  ....does better with the multi-threading.
    3.  ....is more processor intensive than core intensive---meaning  a 3.06 ghz i3(dual core)  vs a 2.5 ghz  i5(quad core) .  I'm quite aware of the bench marks that put it substantially faster but none of the bench marks I've seen use APERTURE 3
    4.  ....is how specifically impactive using a  ATI Radeon HD 4670 vs a AMD Radeon HD 6750M is to speed(in a 21.5 screen)
I shoot almost entirely in RAW, and I have a bunch of plugins that do such things a portraiture, HDR, and Panamoramic combinations using RAW originals.

More answers from various sources to my original questions:
    1.  ....actually uses the four cores in a quad core, or
John answered that well.  But additionally,  the 3.0 duo core probably just coasts at 3.0 with one core.  The Sandy Bridge 2.5 ghz if only uising one core will get over clocked to a 3.4 ghz.  So its probalby a wash and by processor power alone the 2.5 is probably running faster due to the turbo boost.
    2.  ....does better with the multi-threading.
No one know if Aperture uses the multi threads.
    3.  ....is more processor intensive than core intensive---meaning  a 3.06 ghz i3(dual core)  vs a 2.5 ghz  i5(quad core) .  I'm quite aware of the bench marks that put it substantially faster but none of the bench marks I've seen use APERTURE 3.
This was answered by number one
    4.  The video card is way way faster, and apparently, the turbo will also over clock the video card to get more done.
So the reality is that the 2.5 ghz, should be substantially faster on Aperture 3 than the nominally faster 3.0 from last year.
I'll let you all know since I ordered one.  Of course I'll only be able to compare it to a 2.2 ghz core 2duo macbook pro running a slow Nvidia 8600GT
