Aperture 2 Image Preview Corruption?

I just installed Aperture 2 (upgrade) this weekend, and am noticing that eventually, after several minutes of use, image previews (main window, not thumbnails) will start becoming corrupted. The corruption looks like streaks or bands of altered color data. Once it begins, it will persist for most new images that are clicked on. If I quit Aperture, I've noticed the behavior continue with other images (i.e. my desktop background). A couple times, this has also been followed by a system crash.
I'm running on a Dual 2.0 GHz G5, 3.5 GB, OS 10.5.2. Vast majority of images are RAW from a Canon 20D. Prior to updating Aperture, my system was fairly stable - the only crashes I would typically see were sleep-related.
Anyone else see similar behavior? I should note that when I've relaunched Aperture, the image previews are no longer corrupted, so I don't think anything is wrong with my photos themselves...
Thanks for any insight!

Well, I think I finally found the answer to my problem... bad RAM. My system has been rather flaky recently - apps crashing randomly, so I started to think there were other issues going on. After reinstalling the OS had no effect, I finally figured I'd test the RAM. Sure enough, one of my pairs of DIMMs was bad (go figure it had to be the big 2GB upgrade I added). After I took them out, my Aperture imports have worked normally. It hasn't been very long, so I can't comment on whether that solved the system stability problems, too, but it's a good bet it has...

  • APERTURE: Small preview images do not show the changes.

    excuse my lousy english...
    Problem with Aperture:
Small preview images do not show the changes.
I use Aperture 3 since August 2010. By November and 10 projects later it ran normally.
Since the project 11 are in the preview images shown (on the bottom bar in the shared representation) and in the pictures in the books no adjustments. I change for example a picture in b / w it remains in the small preview images bunt even though the great View Erbild s / w is. Even in the books then the famous picture colorful and even grobpixelig.
This is of course in the processing of multiple images per project huntert pretty annoying to have no overview of processed images ...:-(
I had a third installed for books and not as close a relationship.
Does anyone have similar experience or know someone how can I fix this?
    Thanks for reading!

    Lokoe,
    To make sure we understand:
I change for example a picture in b / w it remains in the small preview images bunt even though the *great View Erbild s / w is*.
I am not sure what "s/w" is, but I think you mean:
"I change picture to black and white and the small preview images remain *in color* even though the *big picture in the Viewer* is in B/W."
Even in the books then the famous picture colorful and even grobpixelig.
"In the books the selected picture is colorful and even ???"
"Grobpixelig" -> "grosspixelig" -> "Looks like big pixels???" Not quite sure of the translation. It's been 15 years since I spoke Deutsch!

  • Image Bands/Corruption in Photoshop CS5 When Editing from Aperture

I'm having some problems when editing Aperture images in Photoshop. When I choose an image I want to edit, it opens in PS CS5 with bands of corruption in the image. Now, I hate to use the term corruption, because when I zoom the image to 100%, the bands disappear, so the image isn't truly corrupted. You can see what's going on with the images here: http://gallery.me.com/drewje#100004
I'm using Aperture 3.1.1 with RAW image formats and using an Aperture-managed library, not referenced. I've tried opening in Photoshop with both TIFF and PSD 16-bit formats with identical results. I'm using the high performance energy saver setting, to enable my NVIDIA GeForce 9600m video card in my first gen unibody MacBook Pro. I'm using version 12.0.2 of Photoshop CS5.
I'm getting no help on the Adobe boards, so was hoping someone over here had some ideas or thoughts on how to fix this. Anyone?

I'm just getting back to check on this thread now, but this does appear to fix the problem. I hate to call this "solved" because it's clearly a bug that exists, but it's nice that there's a workaround. I was just about to look at moving to Lightroom. I should be able to live with this.

  • Image Previews In Aperture 3 - Canon 5D MK2

The "previews" Aperture makes are exactly what the photo looks like in the camera and as I wanted/expected the photo to look like, but when the photo has time to "process", the image turns dull and bad looking. If I press "P" again, the photo does not return to the state it was. Sound confusing? Here is my import work flow.
As I import my images, I keep "P" selected so I can zip through my images, rate and delete. When finished, I press "P" and that's when the images change. See attached images of before and after. I always check my histogram on the camera between shots and most of my shots are well exposed, but when I import them into Aperture...the images are typically 1-2 stops darker.
I've been using Aperture since 1.0. This issue has been going on for quite some time, but my daughters birthday party this past weeked was the final straw.
I have a Canon 5D MK2 with the 24-105mm 4.0L IS lens and shoot in RAW.
    Please help,
    Gene

What William said  .  The parts of the Help page I sent you (the OP had posted onto another thread) that I wanted you to notice are this:
How Aperture Displays Images in the Viewer
When a version needs to be displayed in the Viewer, Aperture does the following:
Aperture draws the thumbnail image (a JPEG image that is 1280 pixels in the longest dimension).
Aperture draws the JPEG preview, if present.
Aperture decodes the master and applies any adjustments to it.
Once the last step is completed, the adjustment controls become available. Because the JPEG preview is created with all the adjustments for that version, it appears onscreen faster than the adjusted master would. The result is a sharp preview image that appears quickly in the Viewer.
    and this:
“Use embedded JPEG from camera when possible” checkbox: Select this checkbox to have Aperture use the JPEG thumbnail produced by the camera, if available.
For just-imported Images, Aperture uses the in-camera created JPEG until it makes its own.  This is almost certainly what you are seeing.  (You can change this at "Aperture➞Preferences➞Previews➞Post Import Processing".  I recommend selecting "Standard Previews".)
The histogram on your camera is derived from an in-camera created JPEG.  It is somewhat congruent to the histogram of the converted RAW image, but the key word there is "somewhat".  Additionally, it reflects any in-camera settings you have.  The RAW file is strictly sensor data -- it is the recorded exposure, with no adjustments.
Images from converted RAW files are frequently "dull" (manufacturers do all kinds of things to make their camera-baked JPEGs look "pleasing").  Aperture provides extensive and powerful tools for developing your Images.  When you record your exposures to RAW files, you should think of your camera as a data gathering tool.  The computer is your developer.  If you want the in-camera created JPEGs, there is no reason to record the sensor data to RAW files.
There may be an additional problem with Canon 5D MK2 files.  Search the forum to see if this has been reported.

When I use Preview,Photo Mechanic and Pages, all JPEG or RAW images appear corrupted.
I thought my hard drive was failing and replaced it and migrated everything over but the problem still exists.
It felt as if maybe a virus was at work but I ran Sophos and found nothing.
I store images on my Drobo Raid system but when I work from my Macbook Pro I have no issues, just on the tower.
Any idea what is going on?

First of all, why did you say yes to Nero Back up before researching what it does with files already on the HDD? When I install Nero, the Back Up is the first thing I disable, it is a nagging pain, there are much better backup programs available. There are several file recovery programs out there to recover deleted files, that is, if that is what happened. Also, if you haven't overwritten the files, so you should be able to find them.

  • Aperture 2.1.4 issue with Image preview (Browser Only)

    Hi,
I'm using Aperture from some time, from past few days I'm facing issue with my aperture image browser only.
i have few projects created. In some projects I'm unable to see the images in view browser only mode. If I select some other view option it works fine except view Browser only has issue.
any idea how can i fix it.
    Thanks,
    Gulab Pasha

    thanks for your reply,
I can see the blanks dashes square instead of thumbnails. and it affected to all the images in a project.
(In one of the other modes, you could select all the images (or just the ones affected) and reprocess the thumbnails). how would i do this...
    Thanks,

  • Why does a jpeg look yellower in Aperture than Preview?

Friend sent a jpeg to me. The image looks much yellower in Aperture than preview.
    Exif data regarding color:
    Profile Name: sRGB v1.31 (Canon
I have Aperture and preview set to Proofing Profile sRGB 2.1. I have also calibrated my monitor using the display preferences wizard.
Any reason for the yellow cast when I import the image to Aperture?
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks!

I have Aperture and preview set to Proofing Profile sRGB 2.1. I have also calibrated my monitor using the display preferences wizard.
Are you saying that you have View->Onscreen Proofing turned on? What if you turn it off and view the image does it still have the yellow cast?

  • Aperture images with iLife

I know you can access Aperture images in iLife, but it doesn't let you access the versions that are so carefully edited. Does anyone know if this is possible without exporting versions as JPEGs and then reimporting? Along the same lines, sometimes I just want the images I rate 5 stars to show up in iLife, but it always displays all the images in the project. Am I missing something?

but it doesn't let you access the versions that are so carefully edited.
Yes it does. You just need to make sure you've created previews of the edited versions. I've turned off automatic preview generation and just use a hotkey for the Generate Previews option.
sometimes I just want the images I rate 5 stars to show up in iLife, but it always displays all the images in the project. Am I missing something?
you can't filter out images from the Media Browser (iLife) but you can create a smart album in Aperture that only shows five star images, then use that to browse only those images in iLife apps.
    hope this helps!

  • Unable to save images from image preview or photoshop to network drive

    Hello,
I have an issue when viewing an image file from image preview or photoshop and saving it to a mapped network drive. When trying to save it to the drive, I am met with the error "You don't have sufficient access privileges". However, I am able to save the image to my desktop THEN place it in my mapped network drive.
This has left me pretty puzzled. Has anyone else run into this issue? It was working fine a couple of months ago, and I thought it might correct itself. The issue remains at large. I am not sure why it would stop working, but still works if I click and drag files to it.

    Your assumption is correct.
    The workflow is:
Select Image in Aperture for external editing.
Send Image to external editor via one version of Aperture's "Edit with NameOfExternalEditor" command.
Aperture creates a new Original based on the selected Image and opens specified external editor with the Original loaded.
You make changes to this file in the external editor.
You close this file and select "Save Changes" (or similar) when prompted.
You return to Aperture and find an Image based on the newly-created Original selected.  This Image shows the changes you made in the external editor.  It is badged with Aperture "Edited externally" badge.
Let's check a couple of things:
    - Are you showing all Images in the Aperture Browser?
    - Are there any externally-edited Images in the Project after you have completed editing in Photoshop?
For the first, clear any filter you have set for the Browser by clicking the dark-on-light drop-down magnifying glass icon _in_ the Browser search field and selecting "Show All".
For the second, filter for externally edited Images by clicking the dark-on-light magnifying glass icon _next to_ the Browser search field and setting a filter with the Rule "File Type" set to "is", "externally edited".
    Report back.

  • Images getting corrupted in Lightroom

When review a shoot in Lightroom, I've noticed a bunch of images are getting corrupted, maybe 1 in 500 and end up looking like the enclosed example.
What's even wierder is that if I delete the file and then import the same file from a back up drive, it is corrupted in the same way.
Weirder still is that I then take the raw file off another backup and place it on the desktop, bypass Lightroom and open the raw in Bridge, I end up with the same corruption.
It does not seem to be inherintly corrupted from the original capture because whe I originally imported the file into Lightroom, the preview looks fine. Then, I click on the file to enlarge it or something and it turns like this.
Anyone have any ideas what is going on here? I could almost buy the theory of a corrupted drive but, replacing the files frmo another drive still results in the corruption so, not sure what to think. Scary though becasue if this problem accelerates, I could lose my whole archive theoretically.

    Keith,
Yeah. I've seen them, but I've yet to see compelling evidence that Lightroom is at fault. My mind isn't closed on the issue, but I'd put the probability heavily in favour of LR's innocence. I'd be glad to see proof that LR is destroying files, because then Adobe would be able to plug the leak, as it were, and we all could feel a little safer.
The thing is, a very few people are seeing a fraction of a percent of their images becoming corrupt, and the people who have the trouble don't just lose one, but at a steady (if very slow) pace. That kind of situation sounds like classic hardware problems. It seems to me that if there was some bug in Lightroom that was eating files, it would affect more people. Bugs become pretty obvious after a while.
To oneword: Those backups that are also corrupt. How did they get to their backup locations?

  • Nikon D4s images get corrupted

When I work with my D4s raw images in Lightroom 5.4 (latest update), they seem to get corrupted.
Images are imported and while browsing them, I sometimes get a notification that there is an unexpexted end of file for certain images. Also some images look completely corrupted. They are very bright and have vertical color bands.
Once I have this message on my images, Photoshop CS6 can't open them anymore with the same kind of message.
If I take the CF card with the original raw files and I open them with another software such as Nikon NX or photomechanic, I can work with these images and nothing goes wrong. So the current work around is converting to TIFF in either of the previous mentioned softwares and then importing in LR.
But is there a permanent solution? I would love to have my raw files in LR!
And what about the files that have been corrupted? Is there a way to recover them? I don't have all the original raw files anymore
    Thanks,
    Jerome

    JeromeG wrote:
Once in lightroom and working with the images, some of them suddenly showed as corrupt.
Theoretically, Lightroom is bullet-proof, and just like it says on the wrapper: won't write raw files and so can't corrupt them. The cause of such behavior is therefore hardware.
That said, and at the risk of suffering a spanking from Jeff Schewe, it sure does seem like there is an inordinate number of such reports - there's either a lot of bad hardware out there, or Lr has a nasty bug that's currently being denied (publicly anyway).
I hope Jeff Schewe is right: such bug is impossible (virtually, essentially, for all practical purposes anyway..), and if such bug were being investigated by Adobe, they would make sure it was well known by all users via the forums & journal etc. (uh-huh).
Anyway, even if there is a bug in Lightroom, many (probably all) of these problems are caused by failing hardware (or other system problem), so that's the first thing to assume/check.. - disk & ram are perhaps the most common source of such anomalousness.
Beware: initial image in Lightroom is from jpeg preview NOT raw rendering. So, it could be these images were corrupt before they reached Lightroom (even though they looked fine in Lightroom initially) - depends on what you were able to do with them in Lightroom before the corruption became apparent.
    Cheers,
    Rob

  • Can Time Capsule host an Aperture image library efficiently?

In our household, we have several MacBook Pros with SSD drives, which don't have a lot of storage space. Since we take a lot of high-resolution pictures in .RAW format (app. ~25 MB per file), it would be nice if we could store all of our pictures remotely on the Time Capsule, and access the image library from our laptops, without needing to copy the files to our local harddrives.
So, is it possible to use Time Capsule as the only storage device for our Aperture image library, in a way that we can open and work with the library remotely (wirelessly) through Aperture on several Macs?
I am guessing that this is possibly by simply sharing the files, but there are a few things that I am concerned about, such as:
Will my images files/Aperture library get corrupted/damaged when a computer looses connection to the Time Capstule in the midst of editing?
What will happen if several users attempt to access/modify several images on the Time Capsule at the same time?
Will you get good performance from Aperture with a very large, remote image library?
I have also considered getting an Mac mini with OS X Lion Server to do the same job, but setting it up a bit differently. Possibly setting up a Git repository for the images, but I would much prefer a simpler solution, which is why I'm thinking about doing this with a Time Capsule (using it as a "NAS" of sorts).
Thanks in advance for any help, advice and suggestions.

Of course I found this right after posting my questions...
Also, it is strongly recommended that the Aperture library be stored on a locally mounted hard drive. Storing the Aperture library on a network share can also lead to poor performance, data corruption, or data loss.
So I guess using the Time Capsule is out of the question, but I would still be interested in hearing from you guys if you have any good suggestions on how to work with a large image library in Aperture remotely through the network, if at all possible.

  • TS4256 I have got a Canon 5 Mark III, but aperture generates previews instead of of using the embedded previews. What to do?

I have got a Canon 5 Mark III, but aperture generates previews instead of using the embedded previews of my Camera. Who has got an idea? Thanks

The built-in previews are ONLY used initially for speed.
If you have this set, then turn on quick preview and you'll be able view your images when the embedded previews.  But Aperture will not use these previews *forever* - it's only to be faster during import.
You may be misunderstanding what this feature is for and how it's meant to be used.  It's to make import and initial photo editing (picking your best shots) much faster - along the lines of the speed of Photo Mechanic, which it is.
It is not intended to permanently use the camera generated JPEG preview a the preview.  That woudn't really make sense as it doesn't represent how it looks.

  • Icon instead of image preview in PDF portfolio

We are creating a lot of PDF portfolio using Acrobat X Pro. Part of files included in these portfolios are simple JPEG images. On one of our machines - the one with Acrobat X Pro installed - we have a problem that inside portfolios these JPEG files are displayed as icons currently associated in Windows with JPEG images. On all other machines these portfolios are displayed correctly, as image previews, but on this one we have these images displayed as icons.
We tried some standard and some non standard things: Acrobat X Pro reinstall, antivirus software uninstall, JPEG icon association reset, etc.
    What can block these images?
    I
We are using (on all machines) Windows XP SP3 PL, Comodo Internet Security Premium, latest Adobe Acrobat with all updates.

    Hi,
On my machine the previews are displayed correctly for JPEG files in Portfolios.
You can repair your Acrobat installation from Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel and see if things work correctly.

When previewing images by clicking on the thumbnail in an Event for example, I've been finding that many images preview in a 'zoomed in' way so only a small part of the photos is previewed in a highly magnified view.
Initially I could find no cause. Then I tried right click - Edit and on the affected images, always get this warning:
"Image Cannot Be Edited - This photo was previously edited with another application or with an early version of Iphoto. Duplicate this photo to edit it." and a "Duplicate To Edit" Button is displayed.
The external Editor defined for iPhoto is Adobe Photoshop Elements.
Now, I reckon the MUST be others out there affected by this same apparent Preview bug, yet my searches have not revealed any answers.  Also seems impossible to find a contact number for adobe???
