Aperture 2 not loading thumbnails...

...and moving very slow.
Recently I was using Aperture 2 (haven't upgraded since I just bought A2 in January) on my Macbook (3 year-old black one running Leopard) and Aperture was running fine, albeit slow since I was trying to edit around 400+ shots from a recent trip. Because of speed and memory issues, I decided it was time for an upgrade.
I purchased a new iMac with a 3.06 GHz processor and 4GB of RAM hoping that it would speed up the process.
All of my photos were stored on an external hard drive.
I've been trying to import the photos from the hard drive, but when I do I get no thumbnails and when clicked on, most of the photos are showing up blank. There's meta data on the photos, just no picture.
I tried importing the photos directly from my camera, but I'm having the same issue.
I removed and reinstalled A2 and am having the same problem.
Apparently A2 functions better on my MacBook!
Someone help...
Thanks.

  • New iMac and Aperture not loading .CR2 files? Any ideas?

Hi, I have recently upgraded from a 2009 MBP (running 10.6) to a 27" iMac. What I am finding is that after migrating my applications Aperture will not load/show my CR2 files. It says they are an unsupported format. Any ideas for a solution? These files are stored on an external drive and open fine in photoshop CS5... I have tried installing Camera Raw 6.4.1 updater... PLEASE HELP! Thanks

Reinstalling Aperture may work but as the RAW conversion is external to Aperture (all Apple programs that can work with RAW filles use the same conversion process) I'm not sure it's going to help.
If re-installing Aperture doesn;t fix the problem have a look in /System/Library/CoreServices for two bundles:
    CoreTypes.bundle
    RawCamera.bundle
Highlight each in turn and do a Get Info. The CoresTypes.bundle showuld be version 301.21 and the RawCamera..bumdle should be 3.9
If you still have the problem post back.
    good luck

That is a well-known error. A dynamic library (PluginManager.framework) is missing from your System Library. Typically this error is caused by installing Final Cut.  To solve this, you need to restore the dynamic library; the easiest way to do this is by reinstalling the system.

  • Aperture not building thumbnails

Having a problem right now with generating thumbnails in Aperture 3.5.1.  Originally had another issue with iMovie seeing very few movies in my Aperture library.  I was able to import all files from all cameras into iMovie, and can see them if I import a sampling of them into another library.  Apple support suggested I rebuild my library, which revealed a few more, but still less than 5% of the total.
Apple then suggested I create a new library and import my existing library.  I was watching the progress bar near the end when Aperture crashed at completion.  I repaired the library and it began building thumbnails.  The process has been slow, with Aperture running at 100% CPU (one core--single thread?) and very low I/O on the disk.
The status freezes on one image when Aperture processes roughly 1000 thumbnails.  It says "Generating Thumbnails for [image]" "35,323 Remaining".  At first I thought Aperture may still be processing in the background, seeing how Aperture's CPU utilization remained in the 100% range and disk usage continued.  But when I quit Aperture and restart, it shows barely more progress than what was indicated in the status before quitting Aperture.  The particular images listed are fine, and the thumbnails are generated when Aperture is launched.
At this point, Aperture will not quit cleanly, or with a Force Quit.  Occasionally I've been able to use this suggestion:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3881
In other cases, Aperture seems to quit, but the entry remains in the Activity Monitor, with all accumulated stats, but 0% CPU.  I'm unable to launch Aperture at this time and must restart.  If I try to kill the process, the OS says it can't find it.  Could this be a Mavericks eccentricity?
When restarting the OS and Aperture, thumbnail generation continues from where it left off, and processes another 1000 images or so.  I did try repairing the database, and thumbnail generation continued, but eventually failed.
Occasionally, the com.apple.MediaLibraryService stops resonding in the Event Viewer.  This had not always correlated with the frozen progress bar.  In fact, thumbnails have continued to process when I've seen that hang in Event Viewer.  But it always has meant I need to take Aperture down forcefully.  Oddly, I do not have sharing previews enabled (set to never for now).
There are a few early articles, but they don't seem to offer any suggestions I have not tried, except to persist and restart Aperture each time this happens.  Could take 2-3 weeks at this rate if I need to restart every time the progress bar stops.  I have also tried clearing user and system cache a few times.
Apple second level support has been slow to respond, and I'm over 9 days into this process.  Has anyone experienced anything similar, or can offer any suggestions?

Is it only your current Aperture library, that is causing this trouble?
Or do you see the same problem, when working with a new test library?
Although otherwise operationally sound, some video in my original library was not viewable in the Media Browser (including iMovie), even after a repair and rebuild.
I created a new, empty library and imported my original library.  I described that process.  Aside from the crash near the end, it appears to have all my assets.  The project and image counts are the same.
The issues described about building thumbnails is in this new library.  Upon importing my original library, the new library began generating all new thumbnails.
If the thumbnail generation is only hanging for your current Aperture library, you may have imported corrupted media - image files, videos that cannot be processed, sound files.
I know exactly what you're talking about, and this was my first assumption as well.  As an Aperture 3 early adopter, I saw this issue countless times from failed imports.  But I have examined over 8 files that it has apparently hung on.  The thumbnails are fine!  I look at the assets, directly, and they are in perfect condition.  I expected to find corrupted TIFF files or bad thumbnails.  Neither were true.  If I request to generate it again, it works just fine.
Have you tried to remove the images from your Apeture library, that are shown in the message? Inspect them in the Finder and check the media type - jpeg, raw, video and check, if other Applications can open it.
    Yes.
I do not have previews generated for nearly 2/3 of the images in my library, although I haven't seen reports about how this could be a problem.
    UPDATE
Since my first post, I found a suggestion to regenerate all new thumbnails.  Days of time lost, but I restarted.  Still had a crash after about 1000 thumbnails.  com.apple.qtserver or something was hung.  Seemed only to launch occasionally after I restarted.  Thought this might be responsible for generating thumbnails for video.  So I did a search for all video files and let Aperture build these as I browsed through, page by page.
Since that time, Aperture has been building thumbnails for 10 hours, the longest run yet.  Thumbnails are still generating VERY slowly, but I haven't seen a crash since.
Could it be the back and forth between images and video as it's generating thumbnails?

  • Browsers not loading thumbnails in Facebook

    Hi everyone,
I'm going nuts right now trying to figure out what's gone wrong!
Since last week Facebook wont load properly and thumbnails don't show up. My main browser is Safari but this also happens when I tried Chrome and Firefox.
My Disable Images is unchecked, I emptied my cache, disabled my add-ons but nothing seems to work!
When I right click the thumbnail and press inspect element, this comes up
My sister's Facebook works fine on her own computer. This doesn't happen with any other website either!
    Please help!!

    Might be a cookie issue.
From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Privacy tab then click Details.
Type Facebook in the search field top right side of that window then Remove all results.
Quit and relaunch Safari to  test.
If that didn't help, Open a Finder window. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following:
    ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db
Click Go then move the Cache.db file to the Trash.
Quit and relaunch Safari to test.

  • Firefox not loading thumbnails on some websites

On many websites, like imageboards, or even sites with icons and other small images, Firefox doesn't load these images.
All I see is a blank box, and in the top left corner it shows an image icon (this would be a ripped image icon if the image could not be found).
The links all work fine, and the full-size image always loads fine, but this is very annoying as its defeating the whole purpose of these galleries.
Often the website loads fine, but as I go further into more pages, the images stop loading; sometimes ones that have been previously loaded too.
I've tried clearing caches, DNS caches, etc. no luck. None of these websites are blocking images (right click -> block images from site), and I have no adblocking plugins or software.
    Sites like:
    Deviant Art
    Imageboards
    Facebook (galleries)

Did you check the images properties?<br />
It is possible that the images are from another domain.
*A way to see which images are blocked is to click the favicon (<i>Site Identification</i> icon) on the left side of the location bar.
*A click on the "More Information" button will open the Security tab of the "Page Info" window (also accessible via "Tools > Page Info").
*Open the <i>Media</i> tab of the "Page Info" window.
*Select the first image and scroll down though the list with the Down arrow key.
*If an image in the list is grayed and there is a check-mark in the box "<i>Block Images from...</i>" then remove that mark to unblock the images from that domain.
Also make sure that you allow background images:<br />
Firefox > Preferences > Content : Fonts & Colors: Colors > [X] "Allow pages to choose their own colors, instead of my selections above"

  • APERTURE NOT LOADING PHOT'S FROM IPHOTO

Since Leopard install last week...Aperture won't show the photo's I flag to open with Aperture as the external editor in iphoto!!!
When I try view my Iphoto library in Aperture 1.5.2 it states "library not available...cannot import photo's from Iphoto 5.4 or earlier" yet am running 7.1.1!!!
    anyone got any ideas???

I can round trip pictures from iphoto 08 to photoshop and back
    Yes.
But when I try the same thing with Aperture, the app will open, but the photo is not imported.
    Yes. Makes perfect sense.
You need to Import the pics to Aperture - as in, Aperture does the Action. All you're doing is sending the pics out of iPhoto to an app that has no mechanism to receive them. Remember, Aperture is very like iPhoto (with rather more bells and whistles). It's a database, a photo organiser. And while it can edit pics as well, it is not an image editor only, as Photoshop is. So, you cannot round trip pics from iPhoto to Aperture to edit.

  • Aperture not loading

I have recently upgraded to A2.1 and when I click on the icon in the dock the program opens but the rainbow wheel spins and spins.
I thought it could be an issue with the size of the library - 44,000 images at 280gb but it was fine before i switched to 2 then immediately upgraded to 2.1.
I have images in that library that I need to access urgently and it is taking forever to retrieve each individual image from the library using package contents.
This has been backed up to an external drive as I thught this may be the issue but I cannot access the prefereces to switch library files and the program is non responsive as soon as it opens. It is driving me crazy.
I LOVED using Aperture before this problem but am currently trialling Lightroom as an image system but I love the versatility of Aperture to categorise images into list and have a one stop reference for different jobs.
Can anyone please help me or let me know if they have also suffered a similar problem. The problem has ony really started when I was importing a job with a corrupted image and Aperture froze. It hasn't wrked since.
I have deleted the job from the library files on the external hard drive thinking that could fix the problem.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Aperture not loading after upgrade to 10.5.8

Have just upgraded to 10.5.8 on my MacBook Pro and when I go to start Aperture, it just says the application has quit unexpectedly. What gives? Everything was humming along with the previous OS that I had.
I did the same installation on my iMac a few months back and had no issues.
    Help please!

    Hi Frank,
Thanks for getting back to me. So the stroy so far. I have upgraded/installed Snow Leopard OS and then upgraded to Aperture 3 from 1.5.
Aperture is now asking me for the licensing serial number, I have both the original and the A3 upgrade. I punched in the upgrade serial unmber and it did not like that and asked for the original. I punched that in (straight off the Apple packaging that says 'Product Serial Number') and it has now come up with an alert saying " The serial number you entered is no valid" - What's going on?
This stuff reminds me of my days with Windows!!!!
If you can help I'd be grateful.

  • Yosemite has totally wasted my iPhoto library.  It took me ages to retrieve from my external hard drive but now all the events seem to have been corrupted.  Not loading thumbnails either.

I have a late 2013 27" iMac and I recently upgraded top Yosemite.  Mostly I had no issues apart from iPhoto where I couldn't retrieve my iPhoto files.  I finally managed to do it but all of my event names look corrupt (certainly not how I saved them and it keeps falling over.  What can I do to return it to how it was in Mavericks?

What format is the external drive?

  • Aperture photo viewer is showing the last photo I edited, not the thumbnail I click.

I've seen a few bugs on Aperture 3.5 for Mavericks, but the biggest problem is that when I click a thumbnail in the browser view it shows me the last edited photograph, not the thumbnail I clicked. Quitting and reloading solves this, until I edit 5 or 6 photos, and then it only loads the last edited photograph again, no matter which thumbnail I click, or how many times I try to arrow back and forth to look at a different photo.
Can't find this problem anywhere online. Anyone else seeing this?

I have never seen such a behaviour of Aperture.
Try to narrow down the problem:
Does it only happen iwith your current Aperture library or with every Aperture library you try?  Create a small test library, if you only have one Aperture library.
If you have the same problem with a different Aperture library, try, if you see the same thing, when working from a different user account. Sign in as the guest user or another user account, if you have one and test there. DO you also see the problem there?

  • Thumbnails will not load in elements 12 organizer, using windows 8.1

The thumbnails will not load (hourglass icon appears on each photo) on Elements 12 using Windows 8.1.  I have updated the Elements to Core Version 12.1.  Any ideas how to fix this?

I'm sure that when I close the browser in either OS before switching to the other, the following two conditions are true in the Advanced tab of the Firefox Preferences menu:
    1) "Use autoscrolling" is enabled (with a check mark)
    2) "Always check to see if Firefox is the default browser on startup" is disabled (no check mark)
The autoscrolling feature allows you to scroll by holding down the middle mouse button and moving the mouse up and down. The extension you linked to, ScrollyFox, enables scrolling by clicking a button in the Firefox UI, which is quite a different feature. So unfortunately the problems still remain.
