Aperture 2 raw files end up iDisk jpg files

When I click and drag (as directed by the help directory) my photo files from Aperture to the picture folder in iDisk, it drags the small image file and not the Raw master file. Example: The master CR2 file for an image is 11.36 MB in the Aperture metadata, after the transfer the data size of the same image file is only 306 km and is listed as a .jpg file. That's the thumbnail size used to view the image in Aperture. I want to save the Raw CR2 master files in iDisk. I checked preferences to find an answer to this problem but no luck. These are master image files that are based in Aperture and have been tweaked with in both Aperture and/or PS CS4. What am I doing wrong. Thanks for any help.

The only way to get a master out of Aperture is to export it. Right click on on or more select images in Aperture and choose export master - this will give you the original files that were imported. Realize that there will be no adjustments - it will be exactly the same as it came out of the camera.
RB
Ps. What exactly are you trying to do with iDisk and your CR2 files, as in for what purpose?

  • Does Aperture support RAW files from a Panasonic LUMIX DMC-FZ27 camera?

Please can anyone let me know whether Aperture supports RAW files from a Panasonic LUMIX DMC-FZ27 camera? The Apple Aperture site lists support for DMC-F35 and other later cameras but does not allow a search for others.
    Many thanks.
    John

Only the cameras on this list are supported:  Apple - Aperture - Technical Specifications - RAW Support
    Th FZ27 is not.
For my Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28 I am using Adobe's free DNG Coverter to convert the RAW files to DNG. It does not always work, but for most of the RW2 files I can work in Aperture this way. The stubborn files I convert to TIFF.

  • Aperture 3 RAW file edited in Photoshop

I did this according to the Aperture 3 Manual:
"...select an image and choose Photos > Edit With > [application name]. Aperture makes a new master and version of your image and opens it in Adobe Photoshop. After you make your changes and save the image, the revised version automatically reappears in Aperture. The external editor doesn’t change the original master."
I exported the RAW file as a 16-bit PSD file, made changes and I saved the Photoshop edited file with the same file name. It updated the Aperture image, but there is no other image, just the PS-edited file with the sigil that means  "The photo has been edited with an external editor, and is therefore represented by the original created when the file was exported to the external editor."
But I cannot see the original master file. It's not stacked, it's not moved, it's simply gone. How do I get the original RAW master back along side the PS edited version to make more/other edits?
    Brian

Are your raw files part of a raw+jpeg pair or raw-only?
When I tried to reproduce your problem, but for me the external edit is working as described in the manual.
Set the "External Editor Format" to 16 bit psd in the "Export" preferences.
Select the image in Aperture's browser and use the command "Photos > Edit with Adobe Photoshop CS 6"
Edit Photoshop and use "File > Save", not "Save as".
What exactly do you see, when you are using Photoshop as an external editor?
As soon as I use "Photos > Edit with Adobe Photoshop CS 6", the new PSD version will appear alongside the raw, and after I save the file in Photoshop, the thumbnail will be updated.
Do you also see the new version appear, before Photoshop opens?
The only way I cannot see the versions side by side, is if I do not set the sorting in the browser to "Date", or if the search field is not cleared.  You may want to check the sorting of the project and check for filters.
For example: Editing a raw-jpeg pair, first with "8bit tiff" export, then with "16bit psd" export.
If clearing filters and changing the sorting does not bring the original back, I'd try to repair the Aperture library - this may recover missing originals in a "Recovered" project.

  • Compatibility issue with Nikon's D700 and Aperture downloading RAW files.

Need a little help with this one - purchased a NIKON D700 (today) and tried to download RAW files into Aperture - got a bad message - unsupported image format - (shows on a reddish background)
I worked on the problem for about 4 hours, both with the software and the camera, but to no avail... upon inital download you see a small image but the message occurs when the image is clicked on.
Thank you in advance for any comment or idea you might have.... occurring

You will have to wait until Apple updates the MacOS to recognize the D700 in its RAW profile. It's not listed yet:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1475
You'll have to shoot JPEG or use Nikon's software until Apple gets around to it. Maybe try Lightroom.

  • Aperture D600 Raw Files too dark?

Is anyone else seeing that their Nikon D600 raw files stink in Aperture? I realize that Apple backwards engineers Raw support but if I look at a file from my D600 on Aperture and Capture NX2, the difference is 10-fold. I can see detail in the shadows in the NX2 conversion and nothing but black in the Aperture conversion. I have never seen this much of a disparity and I have used well over a dozen different DSLR's. I am curious if anyone else is seeing this? I mean in one image I can see a staircase in the NX2 conversion and nothing but black in Aperture?

"Neutral" on the camera means nothing.  Those control the JPEG previews only and do not affect RAW files.
Yes I know. However, that JPEG preview is what you see on the back of the camera so having all parameters set to as little post-processing as possible will help give you a more accurate preview of the Raw file. I will give you some more background... Our first DSLR was a Canon 10D. This was before Aperture v1.0. We moved to a 20D, a 30D, a 40D, switched to Nikon and used a D80, 90, 300, 300s, 7000, and 600. I have photographers whose files I process that included Fuji (yikes!), Canon 7D, 5D, & 5DMII. Haven't had a Sony camera yet. I started with Aperture v1 and am now using the latest Aperture release. I have a very good understanding of the process.
@ funkcanna, thanks. I haven't used a D4 but it is good to hear I am not going crazy! Yes, the files just go to crap when you click on one. I too hope this is not a sign of things to come... I really don't like Lightroom but for now, I have no choice.

  • *Need Immediate Help*: Aperture Olympus Raw Files

I need help, is there a way to open Olympus Raw Files (.orf) in Aperture? I really need to get my camera's raw photos working!
    -Thanks

There are a number of cameras that either were once supported by iPhoto or Aperture and now are not, or that are not supported yet. Apple support declined to provide a list of cameras iPhoto and Aperture were compatible with.
If you use a Canon Digital Rebel, you'll be okay. Otherwise test the software with your camera before buying one or the other.
If all else fails, Adobe Lightroom will, as far as I know, open any RAW image from any camera once it's converted to DNG-RAW with the free DNG converter. So, if you can't get RAW to work with Aperture or iPhoto, there is an alternative.
iPhoto and Aperture are the only photo apps I've tried that will not import RAW of any kind from my Nikon 5700. Apple support had no fix.
If anyone has one, I'd love to hear it.

  • Aperture 3 RAW Files

I've been using Aperture 3 since it first came out.  I shoot using a Nikon D90 using RAW+Fine setting.  I always import the files into Aperture as RAW-JPEG pairs using RAW as the master file.  Although I have imported the files and have applied an effect/preset upon import, lately I've been importing the files without any effect added.  As I watch the import proceed, I initially see the thumbnail previews, which display very quickly.  I can then watch the processing and see the images change.  I'm assuming new previews are being generated by Aperture using the default RAW settings for the D90.  Am I correct about this?  When the processing is complete I can view a RAW image to which no other adjustments have been made other than the default RAW settings.  However, I can switch between two "versions" of thie RAW file my hitting the M key to view the original file.  Is this right?  Why is there a difference between an original and the RAW file at this point? I didn't think there would be, since I have not made any additional adjustments to the imported RAW file.  I'm a little confused exaclty what Aperture is displaying at this point.  I thought I understood this....
    Thanks for any insight.

Have you applied any settings in the Raw fine tuning brick? There may a camera default be set.

  • After importing my iPhoto images to Aperture, edited RAW files render strangely

    Hi,
Yesterday I imported my iPhoto 09 library to Aperture 3. I have a problem with my RAW files (from a Sony Alpha 55). I have done some edits to these photos in iPhoto 9 and these edits did carry over to Aperture. Unfortunately the resulting image looks absolutely overly contrasted, I can fix most of it by turning down the Black Clipping, which is set to about 25% of the slider. I don't remember adding black clipping in iPhoto though.
Maybe someone here knows about this problem?
    Jonathan

oh, and it's iPhoto '11 not 09, sorry about that.

  • HT1338 Why wont aperture open raw files????

I've upgraded operating system and aperture

Aperture supports raw files, but only for selected cameras. Is your camera on the list of supported cameras?
Apple - Aperture - Technical Specifications - RAW Support
    We need to know more:
Have you been able to use the raw images from your camera previously, or is this the first time you are using these images with Aperture?
In what way does it not work? Do you see exclamation marks, do you get an error message, does aperture not show the images on import?
Post back, please, with more details.

  • How can I find where my Aperture 3 RAW files are kept?

    Hi,
I need to clear my mac to free up some disk space.  The majority of space it used by apurture so ideally I would like to save all these RAW files to a hard drive.  I don't want to export them I just want to find the original files/versions.  Does anyone know how to do this?
I also use TIme machine back up so would they be automatically stored on here?
    Thanks,
    Ruth

    Ruth-
Note that any moving of Masters must be done from within Aperture. Do not try to simply move them or you will probably lose the connection. After you move your Masters to external drives as Terence described, your Masters will be "referenced" and the Aperture Library will be a civilized size. The Aperture Library should remain on the internal drive.
Time Machine has a spotty history with Aperture backups. IMO original images should be backed up before import into Aperture or any other images management app, and the Aperture Library should be backed up from within Aperture using Vaults.

  • Can aperture open raw files of sony SLT 77 mark II??

  • Will aperture convert raw files straight to jpegs

at present I'm using professional photo shop to do my raw camera shot files, am thinking of buying aperture to use with my brand new all in one desk top mac, but need to know if it will convert raws straight to jpegs?

While I like and use Aperture for a couple of years now, I would recmmend caution in going there now.  According to other posts on this forum and various
articles on the Web, Aperture is being frozen in a prepare to die status.  Here is a ZDNet article on it.  If you search the web, you can probably find other
articles online.  Apple is saying that Aperture is being replace by the New Photo application announced in June.  There is very little if any information on what
Photo can do for a professional.  Some, including me, are expecting it to be a non-professional offering.  Personally I'm exploring Light Room 5 and Photoshop CC 5 to replace Aperture.

Updates to Aperture have been fewer in the last few years except for Camera Raw which is part of OS X itself.
Here is another discussion on the issue which indicates that opinions vary:  Should I buy Aperture in July 2014 even though it's EOLing?

  • Best iMac I can afford for Raw files work in Aperture 3

I'm looking to purchase a new iMac soon. I work mostly with a lot of RAW Nikon files with Aperture and I do a lot of adjustments with them. I'm debating between the 21.5"  iMac but upgrading the processor to the i7, or, getting the larger 27", but can't affford the i7 with that model, would have to stick with the i5 processor. The xtra sceen real estate is nice of course, but would it be better to have the i7 processor since I could always add a second monitor to the 21.5" iMac for additional screen area for menus, etc...Would adding that second monitor affect my processing and/or graphics speeds at all, somewhat negating the xtra power from the i7 processor, or, would adding that 2nd monitor not really affect my processing and graphics power at all?
Also, the 21" and 27" base models have the same graphics card with 512mb vram, is that ok for Aperture with RAW file also?
    Thanks!

All 2011 macs have nice performance improvements over previous models. However Aperture is a hardware hog: GPU, CPU, i/o, RAM. Those intending Aperture as an important app will do far better with the strongest available hardware in a given category.
The GPU will be key as to which iMacs are stronger, after that the CPU. RAM should be 8 GB via third party.
The second display will suck (some) power from the less-than-best GPU in the lower end iMacs. Note that every Mac is really a synergy of its parts to run Aperture, so it is hard to say how much effect a second display has onoverall Aperture performance, but I would not worry about it unless using a Macbook Air. I have a 17" MBP plus $300 Viewsonic VP2365wb and the setup works great. IMO for graphics desktop work a second display is a huge benefit.
IMO hard drives are obsolete as boot drives. If I was buying an iMac (I will not, preferring just-as-strong mobile Macbook Pros with their inexpensive SSDs instead) and could not afford the expensive iMac SSD configuration I would get an i5 model and have OWC retrofit an SSD into the Superdrive slot.
Note that iMac hard drives are not upgradable except by Apple so you might as well order a large hard drive now.
BareFeats.com has all kinds of relative graphics performance tests up (more coming), including this link:

  • Aperture does not support raw files from my Leica d-lux 6.

When will Aperture support RAW files from a Leica d-lux 6?

You can download a free copy of Adobe DNG Converter. You then can use this program to convert the D Lux RAW files into DNG RAW files. Aperture will be able to read the DNG files. This is a bit of pain but it will work until Apple supports the D Lux in its usual glacial time span.
