Aperture 2: Thumbnails are squished

I have an existing project which I have not modified for some time. All of a sudden some, but not all, of the thumbnails for a particular project that you see in the browser are "squished". The people in them are, well, short and wide.
These are referenced files. My Lumix DMC-LX2 takes a 16 x 9 picture. The "squished" files are those which were shot at 2360 x 4208 with the camera rotated 90 degrees to get maximum height and minimum width, such as when taking a picture of the Grizzly Giant in the Mariposa grove of Sequoias in Yosemite.
If I look at the Pixel Size in Aperture it shows 4224 x 2376 instead of the correct 2360 x 4208. It is shortening and widening a tall picture to fit into a wide box.
The original files look fine in Finder. I have tried to regenerate the thumbnails, but get the same result. I tried the edit the pixel size field to switch the numbers but it can't be edited.
How do I get thumbnails to show correctly?
Thanks!

I discovered the solution, if you import the folder as a library, it converts it to the new format with no problem

  • Thumbnails are often the wrong orientation and distorted. What is causing this?

Thumbnails are often the wrong orientation and distorted. When I select in viewer they are normal again.

As if only the corrected layer would have remained on the photos.
So the geometry of the pictures is correct - they are not skewed or something? Only the colors and intensities are wrong?
. Only in printing when it is converted to PDF file some photos are unrecognizable.
Is it the printed pdf or the pdf viewed on the screen? If it is the printed copy you need to fix your print settings.
Does Aperture give a warning, that the high resolution images are not available?
We had some cases of books not being able to be printed, and that was due to a broken reference to the original files. Only the book could not access the originals, all other parts of Aperture could. To check for this, try to add one more adjustment to one of the images in question. Is it possible? Are the edits reflected correctly in the pdf of the book?
We were shooting with 3 cameras, Lumix5 shooting RAW, Cannon 100 shooting JPEG and SONY alfa850 shooting RAW.
Have you tried to reprocess the raw of the edited images? (Photos > Reprocess Raw)
Also try, to remove one of the images from the book and to add it again. That usually helps, if Aperture has lost the connection to the originals used in the book.
If you no have done so already, repair (and if necessary rebuild) the Aperture library.

  • Aperture Import thumbnails not clear

I'm importing uncompressed raw from a Nikon D300 into Aperture 2.1 on a Mac Pro, Leopard. The thumbnail images prior to import are not clear and actually appear jagged if I view large. Images are fine after import. Was wondering if this is normal or if I need to correct something in my process. Thanks for any help.
    Tom

Aperture generates the "real" high-quality thumbnails. Whatever's on the camera as thumbnails are grab-bag. Don't worry about it

  • Aperture movie thumbnails bug

    Hi,
Aperture fails to show thumbnails for all videos from my Samsung NX10 that I import into Aperture. Rebuilding thumbnails doesn't help. The weird thing is, the thumbnails are not just black, but noisy or distorted versions of other (non-Samsung) videos that are in the library. When I resize the Aperture window, the thumnails change randomly.
    Screenshot:
    Has anyone seen something similar?
Also, iMovie hangs when trying to browse the Aperture video library, might that be related?
    Thanks
    Andy

This still happens to me, even in the final version of Aperture.
The way I get around this for video is I do a cmd-shift-O to open the video in QuickTime Player 7. (I have QT Player 7 as my video editor.) Aperture will create a stack and make a duplicate version of the video and open the video in QT Player. I then save and close all of the videos and return to Aperture. I deselect all the selected videos. You will then see that all of the duplicated videos now have a proper thumbnail.
You can then delete the original with the scrambled thumbnail, the duplicate is exactly the same as the original in size, so I'm not losing any resolution. The only caveat is that the duplicate won't be in any project folders, light tables, etc. So you will want to add the video duplicate to the projects that the video is a part of, if you care.
I know this is an old thread, but I just thought that I'd throw this hint in before this discussion gets archived.
I sure beats rebuilding your Aperture database; the time involved and the possibility that it doesn't get fixed anyhow.
P.S. If you get a message that the video doesn't open in QT Player because it is not a supported format; quit and relaunch Aperture.

  • "one or more of the items in your selection contains Aperture albums that are not supported in iphoto".

I have some folders in iPhoto called 'Recovered Folder'. When I try to delete them I get this message: "one or more of the items in your selection contains Aperture albums that are not supported in iphoto".
I don't use Aperture (did install it to try it out), and have deleted Aperture App from my Mac.
How can I get rid of these fodlers?

    i finally figured this out:
fyi, iphoto and aperture can now share (i.e., access) the same library. apple details it here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5260?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
i use both iphoto and aperture, and i suspect something went amiss, at some point, while aperture was accessing my iphoto library.
this is how i fixed the problem:
i launched aperture, then (per the instructions linked above) switched to (i.e., accessed) my iphoto library. i was then able to delete the "recovered folder" and the album it contained. i then quit aperture and relaunched iphoto.
NOTE: at that time, although i expected the "recovered folder" to be gone, it was still present. but this time, i was able to delete the folder from within iphoto without the "contains aperture items" error message.
(Sparky030405, i realize you've since deleted aperture. while i can't say my method is the *only* way to solve this problem, it's the way i was able to solve it. so, you might consider reinstalling aperture in order to delete the folder, then uninstalling aperture, once again.)

  • New Tab Page - thumbnails are not using the files from cache folder, but they want a connection to their origin website.

    Hi there,
each time I visit a website, FireFox saves a thumbnail of all these sites for the "New Tab Page". Those thumbnails are cached in the 'thumbnails' Folder . That's so far ok for me.
    The problem is:
Every time if I use the "New Tab Page" (...after shutdown & reopening the browser and only with 'mousehoover' on any thumbnail) all the thumbnails on that page don't use the cached thumbnails from the local profile folder.
    This means:
Instead of using the cached thumbnail-files all(!) these thumbnails dials to their origin websites without(!) a mouseclick on any of these thumbnails (...see jpg pictures) !
I'm using the "Clear history when Firefox closes" with the following options:
    privacy.clearOnShutdown.cache - true
    privacy.clearOnShutdown.cookies - true
    privacy.clearOnShutdown.downloads - false
    privacy.clearOnShutdown.formdata - true
    privacy.clearOnShutdown.history - false(!)
    privacy.clearOnShutdown.offlineApps - false
    privacy.clearOnShutdown.passwords - true
    privacy.clearOnShutdown.sessions - true
    privacy.clearOnShutdown.siteSettings - false(!)
So, i can't believe that this homedialing of pinned and unpinned thumbnails should be a normal function.
    1. Screenshot: thumbnails in the New Tab Page
    2. Screenshot: the same thumbnails in the Cache Folder "thumbnails" (...also they are there after shutdown of Firefox)
    3. Screenshot: Dialing to the origin websites (...after restart of Firefox)
The Browser Version is Firefox ESR 31.2.0 and in the installation are no Add-ons, which are - for example - prefetching linked websites.
I would like to use the "New Tab Page" without 'homedialing', so the question is:
How can I force the thumbnails to use the cached thumbnail-files ?
    or
How can i disable the 'loading of content from their origin websites' already on mousehoover ?

There is a preload pref available that you could try to disable on the <b>about:config</b> page.
    *browser.newtab.preload = false
You can open the <b>about:config</b> page via the location/address bar.
You can accept the warning and click "I'll be careful" to continue.

Have a look at your import setting specifically Store Files:
Make sure it is set to where you want the originals to go.

  • After a rebuild/repair of my photo library thumbnails are missing for RAW images.

Every few months I rebuild my iPhoto library to make sure the database stays clean and up to day. This time was different though - after the rebuild/repair of my photo library thumbnails are missing for all RAW images (Canon). Images from other cameras and jpegs are all fine. Only the events with Canon RAW images have no thumbnails.
I am rebuilding the thumbnails once again but has anyone else seen this issue? Losing thumbnails to RAW images during a rebuild?

Every few months I rebuild my iPhoto library to make sure the database stays clean and up to day.
There is no need to do this. It doesn't achieve anything.
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Include the option to rebuild the thumbnails. It can take 3 or 4 goes for this to work

Could someone help me restore my photos?  I was trying to "restore my database" in iPhoto when it shut down - now my thumbnails are distorted, logged under a new name, and when you click on a thumbnail it opens as another photo.  I was following another "helpful hint" hold down the option and command key and restart iPhoto - select the top three and you should be able to get rid of the dreaded exclamation point.  My MAC ran through the first two options dealing with thumbnails, but crashed during the "restore database"  step and now I have a mess.  Help, please.  Thank you.

Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • IPhoto thumbnails are blank, but maximized photo shows up.

I had to power of my iMac while iPhoto was uploading some photographs. When I turned it back on, iPhoto prompted me to restore the library. I said yes. Now the thumbnails aren't appearing, and when you double click a photo to maximize it, it briefly shows up with the grey yeild "!" icon and then the photo shows up, but the thumbnails are still grey. Is there a fix for this?

    Try the following:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down to open the First Aid window.
2 - Run Option #2, Rebuild Thumbnails.  It could take more than one pass to get the job done.

  • Thumbnails are completely blacked out

My thumbnails are completely blacked out (version XI). How can I make them show correctly?

It is happening on my Windows 8 computer at home and my windows 7 computer at work. I have adobe pro and reader XI at work and adobe reader XI at home. The documents I am trying to open are text books. I have contacted my school and they see them fine on their side, but I can't see them on mine so they told me it was a glitch on my side. They even resent me their document that opened correctly and I couldn't see it on my side.

  • IPhoto thumbnails are missing

A few hours ago I imported a new movie into iMovie. Something went wrong and now all of my iMovie thumbnails are missing from iPhoto in the event area. The only movies I see are ones I imported, nothing from iPhoto is showing anymore. When I click on the camera icon and go to the folder where my movies are in iPhoto nothing shows up. And for some reason my movie is stalling now when I play it where as before it was playing smoothly, well the movie I have so far.
I have tried to delete the iMovie cache file, it took 3 hours to rebuild my thumbnails and they were still not there. I deleted the new files I imported into iPhoto and emptied the trash. Any idea how to fix it? I don't really need all the old thumbnails back as long as I can reinsert them and it doesn't look like iMovie can see them anymore. I wouldn't even care about that if my current movie wasn't stalling, I can hear the sound but the picture pauses. Anyone?
