Aperture 3.0.2 and Printing Presets

I have updated to 3.0.2 and have 10.6.3. I trashed my Aperture plist and re-created a printing preset. However, the presets do NOT save. The printer always reverts to my default black/white laser printer, even though I selected an Epson R2880 and the paper size always goes back to "Letter". I have the most recent print drivers from Apple for the R2880.
I have also tried on my MacBook Pro (10.6.3 Aperture 3.0.2) with only one printer installed.
Anyone else see this issue?

Same issue with Aperture 3.0.2 and HP Photosmart Premium C309g.
I've only one printer installed but the paper size reverts always to the default setting (A4).

  • [CS5.5] Lock PDF export and print presets

    Hi,
With this post I would like to ask a question regarding locking certain features in Indesign.
Does anyone know if it is possible to ...
    - lock PDF export and print presets so a user is not abble to change/override any preset properties, and is forced to use a preset without the possibility to override any of the properties when using it?
    - force a user to use one of the predefinied presets to print or export a document without the ability to create a new preset?
    - verify PDF-files to check what Indesign print/export preset was used?
Being part of a larger prepress team, we would like to make sure that, every PDF-file created by each team member, is created with the same specs.
Does anyone know of any plugin, tool or release that enables such a functionality?
    Kind regards
    John

If the employees cannot follow company policy, they need to know that there are other people looking for work who can. Yes, mistakes happen, but that would be a case of choosing the wrong preset from a list (which, if you leave more than one installed, can't be avioded). Changing settings against policy is not a mistake.

  • MX925 and Printer Presets in Mac Mavericks

    Hi there
for some reason certain settings do not remain active in a preset when you save it - eg... greyscale or scale - some do and some don't. I have set a preset and when I come back the above settings move to default...
    Can you help...

If you have 11.0.4 installed, you have everything in 11.0.1, 11.0.2., and 11.0.3
There is no reason to install any update other than 11.0.4

  • Export to PDF and Print to Postscript (in one step)

I am seeking a script that will do the following consecutively:
    * Export to PDF (PDF settings never changes, output directory never changes)
    * Print to PS (printer preset that is used never changes, output directory never changes)
It would save us a lot of time in our workflow having to do this in one step, with a single keyboard shortcut.
Since the same PDF and Printer presets are always used, as well as the output directories, It would
probably be easy to include those settings in the script itself, as opposed to some preference file, I'm guessing.
If anyone can help me write this, I'd much appreciate it.
    Thanks,
    Destin

    Thanks Gerald for the suggestion.
Looks like some powerful software there... and a bit pricey for what I need to do (over $500 US dollars, yikes).
Surely the script I am seeking is much less involved than that.  I suppose I'll have to try to do some Javascript myself,
which will be a learning experience...

  • Printing Presets Disappeared

Using Acrobat 8 (I know it's old and has to be used for old printers)
When the application unexpectedly quit I re-opened the program. When I went to print ALL of my printing presets were gone. WHY? Where did they go and how do I get them back. Also, in the future can I save them somewhere else as a backup and then reload them if it ever happens again. This is the 2nd time in 3 years. I'm a print house and use the presets A LOT.
    Thank You.
    Dwayne

Dpocment and Printer presets are, I think saved as part of the InDesign Defaults file (that's a real filename, not a location). See Replace Your Preferences for details on finding and backing up the prefs, or look into Blatner Tools (plugin) or preference manager from In-Tools (I think).

  • Colors and printing

    Hi,
What a wonderful week I have spent immersed in the glorious world of printer/colour calibration :-)
I recently purchsed some new printers for the artroom department under the guidelines that we wouldnt need a calibrated printer(alas it seems we do and someone didnt realise). I did not know anything about colour, Adobe prducts and just how much there was to all of this before last week. My background is in servers and networking. So I unleased a rather large can of worms it seems
I have read a lot over the last week, printed an awful lot (a particulalry gregarious sponge pudding) and had a good play with Adobe illustrator to see what is going on. The story starts that one of our designers logged a call in the helpdesk saying that what they were seeing on their screen was not what they were getting out of the printer. So I went down to investigate....
On her screen the background of the sponge pudding is sea green however when she sends the print job to the new printer it comes out sea blue. Now, to me that seemed really out. I can imagine that shades of blue would be out alittle on a non calibrated printer or shades of green but now whole colours out. So we had the printer company in who we lease the printers off and the printer was recalibrated using color charts. Its not a pantone printer and we are using the PCL 6 driver (which I will come to later). I downloaded the free trial version of illustrator and opened the image on my computer and guess what.... my image is sea blue. So I think to myself thats odd, very odd. I then borrow a colourmunki off another manager and calibrate my screen and still the background of the sponge pud is blue AND it prints fine (well as good a match as I think we are going to get). At this point I think, right its the designers monitor. SO I go back to her and she says "ah but the sea green I see in Adobe is color matched to Pantone number 352". So I have a look and sure enough it is. However, I have no idea how she has created this pantone color in her adobe illustrator. Perhaps she created the color on her uncalibrated screen and she thinks its sea green but its not. However as it prints out blue from both my pc and her hers but the pantone matches on hers (sea green to sea green) I start getting very confused...
So I opt to read further about work spaces, assigning profiles, CMYK work spaces, RGB etc etc. To clarify all that:
1.) I set up my mahcine with a sRGB work space using FOGRA37 (or something like that) for CMYK. I ensured that I assign this profile to the sponge pudding. I then check my printer presets. My printer is PCL6 so there are limited options but I set the output to sRGB (and even try printing to bitmap). I print out the image and it looks again pretty close to what is on my screen. However, if I drop the color setting back to Adobe illustrator version 6 (it goes sea green on my monitor!!! and it prints out sea green!!. SO I am even more confused at that point.
2.) I apply the same settings above on her machine (same workspace settings, same profile assigned to the image and same printer settings). The image is still green on her screen but prints out blue.
At that point I want to weep!.
I then opened up the same doc on two different designers pc's and sure enough they are verging on blue, cloer to blue than the green she is getting (and the pantone green in the booklet). SO now I have 3 pc's with all the same workspace, profile and printer presets which show the image as blue (or near enough) but her machine shows it as sea green and matches the pantone.
We are hopefully getting the postscript driver activation key tommorow to see if it helps. I guess if anyone has any helpful tips or maybe there is something I am missing.
What I do find expecially wierd is that when I open the sponge pud on her machine, for a very brief instant its blue and then it goes sea green. The bit thats confusing me is why it matches the pantone color chart. Her monitor isnt even calibrated. Yet mine is and its blue on mine. She showed me the CYMK breakdown (I think it was 57,0,28,0). However, looking online the CMYK shows as sea green (I just tried it in a color calculator app online)
    thanks,
    Paul
p.s. will buy beer for anyone who can help!!!

You're going to need a third party application that will calibrate the monitor and calibrate the printer.  I've had good luck with the x-Rite Spectrophotometer and Monaco Proof.  You do not supply any info on the monitor or the printer.  But, let me try to address some of your concerns:
"1.) I set up my mahcine with a sRGB work space using FOGRA37 (or something like that) for CMYK. SO I am even more confused at that point."
    - Color settings can be applied in Bridge if you have the entire CS.  sRGB is not the RGB color space you want and I'm not sure about Fogra.  Print drivers under PCL6 are pretty good, but you will benefit from a Postscript level 3 RIP which can better match Pantone color.  Pantone 532C is a light Green.  I found CMYK equivalents = 27C, 25Y.  If you're referencing a 57C, 25Y formula, then the color will be more Blue than Green.  I would recommend getting someone experienced in color management to calibrate your PC's, their monitors, and your printers ( preferably after you've gotten the Postscript upgrade.  A typical print workflow will call for an RGB color space = Adobe RGB 1998; a CMYK color space of SWOP or G7.  Have "Use Black Point Compensation" selected.  And, for all of your applications: "Preserve Embedded Profiles" and/or "Ask When Opening".  IMPORTANT: get in the habit of referring to actual Pantone printed color guides and not your monitor.  Now, if someone has applied a Pantone color to an element in Ai; non-Postscript printers will have difficulty converting that color in a standard print driver...even PCL6.
2.) I apply the same settings above on her machine (same workspace settings, same profile assigned to the image and same printer settings). The image is still green on her screen but prints out blue.
    - Again, that is a color conversion problem within the standard print driver.  The beauty of a Postscript Level 3 Proofer is that they have color conversion tables loaded and used in printing the Pantone 352.  And, as good as Postscript level 3 Proofers are, they cannot match all Pantone Spot Colors.  But, I suspect the Pantone 352 is an easy color to match for a proofer.  Not so much on a standard, non-Postscript desktop inkjet printer.  It may be beneficial for everyone to create a swatch of 27C and 25Y using CMYK color percentages and apply that to the Ai element.  Try it and see if you get better results.  Some will say that converting to PDF will be a workaround.  Again, get someone in there that knows what they are doing.  They will be able to help.  You might want to contact a local print vendor and see if they have someone who can help.  It has to be someone on-site who can see what you have in place for software and hardware.
Over time, you will start to understand the fundamentals in a solid workflow.  It's getting there that is the frustrating part.

  • Aperture 3.0.2 will not save Print Presets

I am extremely frustrated right now as I burn through very expensive paper. Aperture 3.0.2 will not save any of my Print Presets. I have two Epson Printers a Epson Photo 900 and and Epson R2400. I want to print to the Epson R2400 and when I do, the photo comes out all screwed up it keeps putting in Adobe PDF 9 as the printer. I had my printer completely dialed in and could print orders with no problem in Aperture 2.0 lost all those settings upgrading to 3.0. Attempted to duplicate them, but it will not save my Printer or Paper Size. I have an order to fill and it's looking like it's going to cost me money because of all the paper I am wasting trying to get this to print. Tried numerous posted tricks and nothing is working.

I discovered the image quality was a more basic duh thing. Had to clean my print heads. However, the Presets will STILL not save my printer or paper size.

  • When I make a Book in Aperture and print a PDF proof version, all the modified photos (marked with Badges) are totally distorted.  What is causing this? All other - non-modified photos - appear to be fine.

When I make a Book using Aperture 3 and print a PDF proof version, all images that have been modified within Aperture are distorted in PDF form.  All other images appear ok.

As if only the corrected layer would have remained on the photos.
So the geometry of the pictures is correct - they are not skewed or something? Only the colors and intensities are wrong?
. Only in printing when it is converted to PDF file some photos are unrecognizable.
Is it the printed pdf or the pdf viewed on the screen? If it is the printed copy you need to fix your print settings.
Does Aperture give a warning, that the high resolution images are not available?
We had some cases of books not being able to be printed, and that was due to a broken reference to the original files. Only the book could not access the originals, all other parts of Aperture could. To check for this, try to add one more adjustment to one of the images in question. Is it possible? Are the edits reflected correctly in the pdf of the book?
We were shooting with 3 cameras, Lumix5 shooting RAW, Cannon 100 shooting JPEG and SONY alfa850 shooting RAW.
Have you tried to reprocess the raw of the edited images? (Photos > Reprocess Raw)
Also try, to remove one of the images from the book and to add it again. That usually helps, if Aperture has lost the connection to the originals used in the book.
If you no have done so already, repair (and if necessary rebuild) the Aperture library.
See: Repairing and Rebuilding Your Aperture Library: Aperture 3 User Manual

  • Printing Success with Aperture 1.5.2 and HP Photosmart Pro B9180

With so many "hit-and-miss" posts regarding printing, I thought I'd post my result with Aperture 1.5.2 and my newly-acquired HP Photosmart Pro B9180.
Firstly, I have my monitor calibrated using ColorVision's Spyder Express. It's a cost-effective solution to monitor calibration and what I see on the screen is what I'm seeing in the print. I calibrate weekly.
Secondly, I'm using HP's Advanced Photo Glossy Paper for prints. HP provides the ICC profiles for their papers (and thus far, they seem to be dead-on accurate).
Thirdly, and I believe this is where issues can occur, is to set, via the Print Driver, color management as Application Managed. This bypasses the default of allowing the printer to manage color for you. This allows Aperture to use the ICC profile of the printer and calculate the proper color "conversion".
Finally, via the Apple's support article on optiziming print (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302821) save the customized printer setup for a specified print size, paper, etc.
I have made 20 prints thus far and all have come out satisfactory. The only "tip" I'd make is that I noticed the gamma setting in the print dialogue is ideally set at 1.15. Otherwise, the print seems to be a bit dark.

I just got a B9180 too so thought I would try printing from Aperture. As you suggested I set Gamma to 1.15 - but I still feel the prints are a bit dark. Tried 1.20 but that looked identical to 1.15!

  • Printing from Aperture, and printing from Lightroom.

    Hello,
I have noticed when I print from Aperture using my Canon i9950 and a custom paper Colorsync profile, and if I then print from Adobe's Lightroom using the same Colorsync profile and paper, the print from Lightroom is much sharper. The Aperture print is exact in every respect except it is noticeably softer.
Anyone else notice this? And if so is this a recognised problem that may be fixed in 1.1?
    Kind regards,
    Anil K Solanki
    G4 Dual 867   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Hi Charles, I totally agree with you. Lightroom's printing features are really excellent. In comparison Aperture almost seems like the printing of photographs was something the Aperture dev team bolted on at the last minute.
I sincerely hope Apple sort out, what for me is inexcusable in a professional commercial app. A few photographers I know are going to use the next release of Aperture as a turning point, if it can't print as good as the Beta Lightroom then they will become Lightroom users and say good bye to Aperture.
Apertures sorting and logging tools really are second to none, but if the print quality is poor, what is the point. I know for a large number of photographers, producing prints is not high on their list of needs, especially if they are supplying prints for publication or the web. But if I want to do what my old fashioned enlarger can do, which is create great prints, then hey I am not going to get it with Aperture.
I know Apple can fix this, I just hope they do.
    Anil.

  • Aperture, Display and Printer Color Match/Profile Calibration ?

I need to calibrate my HP Photosmart Plus B209a-m Printer to match what I see on my Acer X223w 22 inch display when using Aperture 3 and Photoshop CS5
The colors are pretty close to matching but each photo I print comes out deeper in color ( shadows and highlights are off )
I have the Acer display Color Profile set to Adobe RGB 1998, All photos shot with my Nikon D5000 in RAW format and Color Profile Adobe RGB 1998,
Aperture 3.03 Proofing Profile Adobe RGB 1998 and when I print a photo I set HP Color Matching / ColorSync to Adobe RGB 1998
I've been using Canon Photo Paper Plus Glossy II PP-201 for prints but can't find a profile for it to add to my HP Printer.
If I did find a profile how would I install it so it would show up in the drop down list of paper types ?

Well I'm pretty amazed that the prints are just slightly off, with all the things you're doing wrong in color management.
First off, you don't seem to know the difference between a device profile and a working space (i.e. 'synthetic' profiles), since you assigned AdobeRGB to both your monitor and printer. You should profile your printer and display with special hardware, like the X-Rite Colormunki. This will generate a profile, that will translate how color should look theoretically (by the assigned working space e.g. AdobeRGB), to how they will look on the hardware.
Secondly, RAW-images do not have a color profile! The setting in the camera only applies to in-camera JPEGs. RAW files only contain the voltages the CCD measured, this has to be translated into in image later.
Thirdly, softproofing in AdobeRGB almost never makes any sense. It doesn't make any sense if your are softproofing in AdobeRGB if you want to match screen to print. Your softproofing profile should be the profile that is specific for your printer and paper combination. The only synthetic profile that makes sense to softproof to is sRGB, since that is the colorspace used on the web. And even that is disputable since 99.9% of web user do not have a calibrated/profiled monitor.
Fourthly, Adding a color profile will not add a paper type to the drop down list in the printer driver. These are hard-coded in the printer driver and basically determine the amount of ink being placed on the paper.
So I'd suggest at this point to fetch yourself a copy of 'Real World Color Management' by Bruce Fraser (ISBN 9780321267221) and read it from the front to the back before you again embark on the path of color management.

Acrobat on OSX does not use printer preset. Every single time I have to print I have to click printer and then print to load the preset and then click print again from the main dialog. I am printing to a Xerox that has the copier code in the preset so if I don't do this it will not print. This has been broken for in every version I have tried. This extra clicks are taking years off my life. Did I remember to do the extra clicks? I don't know, I guess I will run down the hall and check. Please fix this.

What operating system are you running? I assume they had you install the latest BIOS. True? If it were mine, I would suggest forcing it to use integrated graphics (in the BIOS) to rule out a problem with the NVidia driver.

  • Apple Photobooks and Prints Color Space? - Aperture

Does apple use Adobe RGB or sRGB to print the photobooks and prints via Aperture?  Also what is the perfered ppi setting?
I am looking for a professional Adobe RGB printer with a printer specific ppi setting that I can order from via Aperture.  If anybody knows these setting for Apple or another printer please let me know!!!
    Thank you!

Can I suggest you buy Philip Andrews book, Advanced Photoshop Elements 10.  he explains colour spaces and much much more very clearly and exactly what can be done with 16 bit files and what you then have to change to 8 bit to accomplish.  He's written basic and advanced guides for Elements since day one.  Usually available from Amazon for under £20.

You didn't mention any color calibration being done on your monitor.  This is an essential part of any color-correct workflow.  What are you using to calibrate your monitor (and your printer)?
Print profiles (for soft-proofing as well as printing) are for specific combinations of paper & printer.  The nine you have are each, most likely, for a common paper (perhaps mfr'd by Canon) to be used with your printer.
I don't know what you mean when you say "I choose a high standard print option".
Have you read the User Manual chapter on printing?

There is also a good appendix on calibration:

  • Print presets not saving

I never got very good results from printing in Aperture 2, but Aperture 3 seems to have fixed most of my outstanding issues. So I was trying to set up some print presets. Unfortunately, I create a new preset, select Save Preset from the gear menu and it disappears the next time I start Aperture. I can't even seem to find what file Aperture might be storing these presets in, Library > Application Support > Aperture has a PrintPresets.plist file, but I don't see any of the presets in my print dialog in there, and none of those files contain my preset.
Is anyone else seeing this? Anything I can try to resolve this? I'm on 10.6.2 with an Epson 3800 if that matters.
    Thanks.

OK, if the permissions thing doesn't work I do have another fix....if you don't mind 'going under the hood'.
Your plist thing gave me an idea, so what I did, having confirmed that my file, like yours, did not contain any of my saved presets, was make my own in plist. If you decide to try this please make a good copy of your plist file and keep it somewhere safe before you start, and please understand you do this at your own risk. Having scared you sufficiently it is actually quite easy. Open the PrintPresets.plist file, choose one of the existing presets (they are labelled as items) that is closest to the one you wish to create and copy it. Then click plist to navigate back one level and then paste in your new preset. Rename it (user name) and save, then reopen AP3 to confirm your new preset does in fact show up. Assuming it does then you can go back into PrintPreset.plist and tweak the settings to suit. The one thing that tripped me up briefly was the fact that measurements in the plist file are imperial yet in my copy of AP3 I am using metric, simple enough to convert though.
Again, this is at your own risk, but it worked a treat for me and now I can strart to print with my own presets in AP3. Wish I'd thought of it earlier.
Good luck if you decide to have a go
    Take care
