Aperture 3.0 Library corrupt?! What to do

I have a serious problem! Aperture 3.0 crashes whenever i try to open my Library; but also when i try one of the 3 repair options! A fresh library works without any problems.
Before installing A3 today, I was exporting all the projects.
Installed A3, created a fresh library.
Imported the exported libraries.
So far everything was working optimal, so i pumped the A2 projects and libraries. (go regain the space)
Then I started importing the iPhoto 09 library. that took some time, but also finished.
This is where the things started to get problematic. It started "processing" something.
The Mac got slower, and hotter. Activity window showed like "rebuilding face thumbnails".
Queued was one more thing to process all the imported photos.
When the face stuff was almost done, i went for something to drink, when i came back the mac screen was black, and did not wake up any more. So i waited but no HDD activity, but even while getting cooler it still did not make a sound, did not wake up, screen stayed black, …
so after some more waiting i decided to restart the mac by pressing the power button 5sec and then turn it on again.
That's where i realized my mac was hit hard. Spotlight was reindexing the HDD from 0.
I tried to open Aperture, it opens (quite fast by the way) but then crashes even faster.
I tried repairing the Library -> aperture crashes
I tried rebuilding the Library -> aperture crashes
I tried repairing the Library permissions -> completes, and then aperture crashes
Main problem is that there is no backup for the aperture 2 data
Does anyone has an idea how to fix that?

Personally i recovered from that, but it was not really painless.
Created a copy of the aperture bundle. and then removed i think the Database/folders folder, and after that it was able to rebuild the database.
The recovered photos where all there, but the folder/project structure was lost, … no surprise, and not a huge problem, .. using smart folders i got things sorted quickly.
since i learned my lesson i exported the aperture data after i had it sorted into a fresh library to restart from there.
first thing there was to add a vault which i now update after each import …(i'm using a local vault on the same disk for now, and will add vault on a dedicated USB drive when i get back to my place where i have the spare drives)
for me it got a bit better, even if it is still regularly crashing on huge load.
so what i did is to put a button into the toolbar to display the activity window.
and each time after some import when it starts the processing i pause for example thumbnail creation until processing is done (i let run only one CPU intense task)
aperture crashed also this time after importing the iphoto library, but fortunately the aperture library is still working and i just had to restart and finishing processing.
ps: since it seems to depend on CPU intense tasks and not in disk i/o i tried to lower apertures priority with "renice" terminal command, surprisingly that made it crash within about 5 seconds during image processing. this is the opposite of what i expected and so my guess is that it might be a problem with OpenCL and my integrated Intel graphic card (that makes the mac freeze)
That would be logical since less CPU power would lead to heavier outsourcing to GPU, and kill it faster.
That all leads to the question: Is it really using OpenCL, and iff so, is OpenCL supported for integrated graphic processors at all?
Maybe you can tell what system configuration you have?

  • Aperture 3 Converted Library Corrupted - KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE Errors

I just converted my Aperture 2 library to Aperture 3. Unfortunately, something has been corrupted in the aperture 2 library. I think I've tracked it down to a corruption in a preview file or a broken reference. In any case I can't seem to get around it. Heres the problem, I would appreciate any advice:
    *The Problem:*
Aperture 3 keeps crashing on my newly converted library. The error I get is a KERNPROTECTIONFAILURE error but it only happens when aperture is processing previews! If I startup A3 while holding the shift key down A3 runs fine but as soon as it tries to process new previews it instantly crashes with same error every time. I've so far tried the following:
    1) rebuilt the A2 library before converting.
    2) reprocessed all masters after converting.
    3) reinstalled A3
    4) Moved all the files to a brand new hard drive.
    5) rebuilt the A3 library numerous times.
    6) attempted to deleted all previews and regenerate them after successfully reprocessing all masters.
    8) I've even reinstalled OS X 10.6 and that wasn't it either
So I am pretty sure this is a data corruption error but I can't track it down and can't find a solution. Does anybody have any ideas?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Okay so I just tried running Aperture 3 in 32 bit mode and so far no crashes... hopefully this is what the problem was. I'll report back if anything changes. From the looks of it Aperture 3 isn't ready for 64 bit prime time yet. lame.

  • Manually deleted duplicates, corrupted library, now what?

I'm new to Mac. I imported photos into iPhoto, played with iPhoto for a while, and decided for a variety of reasons - including the fact that I ended up with a TON of duplicates - to install Picasa and use Picasa to manage my photos.
I used Picasa to identify, and then manually delete photos. I identified folders that contained duplicates and deleted them. They're still in the trash.
Then, I realized that I was better off sticking to iPhoto. So - in the Photo display, all of the photos are still there, but attempting to zoom into them reveals a black screen with a "!"
So, how do I get out of this mess? It seems that I can rebuild the library, but what should I do about the folders that I dragged into the trash?
I'm trying to figure out how to get myself out of this mess...

To delete an Event, delete or move all the pics within it. You can merge Events simply by dragging one to another.
FWIW here’s a canned answer I use when folks are thinking about organising their photos. Maybe something will strike an idea for you.
I use Events simply as big buckets of Photos: Spring 08, July - Nov 06 are typical Events in my Library. I use keywords and Smart Albums exensively. I title the pics broadly.
    I keyword on a
    Who
    What
Where basis (The When is in the photos's Exif metadata). I also rate the pics on a 1 - 5 star basis.
Using this system I can find pretty much find any pic in my 25k library in a couple of seconds.
So, for example, I have a batch of pics titled 'Seattle 08' and a typical keywording might include: John, Anne, Landscape, mountain, trees, snow. With a rating included it's so very easy to find the best pics we took at Mount Rainier.
    File -> New Smart Album
    set it to 'All"
    title contains Seattle
    keyword is mountain
    keyword is snow
    rating is 5 stars
Or, want a chronological album of John from birth to today?
    New Smart Album
    Keyword is John
Set the View options to Sort By Date Ascending
    Want only the best pics?
add Rating is greater than 4 stars
The best thing about this system is that it's dynamic. If I add 50 more pics of John to the Library tomorrow, as I keyword and rate them they are added to the Smart Album.
Keywording takes time to set up, there's no doubt about it. I use Keyword Manager as it's much more powerful than the inbuilt system, and adds the possibility of nested keywords. So, for instance, if I add John to a photo it also adds 'Family'. Now I can add many keywords to a pic quickly.
In the end, organisation is about finding the pics. The point is to make locating that pic or batch of pics findable fast. This system works for me.

  • ITunes 7.6.1 Library corruption & possible solution

For two or three days itunes have been crashing with -50 errors (cannot save the library file) just after trying to play a song after a fresh launch. Otherwise if quitting without playing any music, I would get a dialog upon normal quit which informed of unexpected quit and invalid disk access errors (multiple crash reports sent to apple over the past 48 hrs)
I have over 30,000 tracks and do not wish to rebuild/reimport/recreate the library again
Booting from Install disk and verify & repairing the disk with disk utility was successful (invalid free space corrected) but did not help with apparent itunes library corruption.
Deleting the various itunes related prefrences from user/lib/prefs and user/lib/prefs/byHost did not help. Reinstalling a fresh copy of itunes downloaded from apple did not help
Trying to rebuild the library created new a library that would still crash with -50 errors
(after taking something like an hour to create a fresh library with assosiated loss of perfectly good album art that was fine before the corruption started) Other weirdnesses included the name of my podcast download folders and my library name in itunes windows changing to japanese/korean/chinese
solution? Disable iwow, turn it off or uninstall it.

I've been unable to launch itunes (7.6.2) ever since the latest updates. Actually, I could launch in a library-less test account, and once after deleting my entire preference (although upon the next restart I had the same problem).
    What is iwow?

  • Problem using/opening Aperture 3.0 Library in Aperture 3.5.1

I have Aperture 3.0 Library that I opened in Aperture 3.5.1 and got this:
I did all repairs and rebuilds, but noting works. I can't access any PS file that I have, and the exports from the library looks like this:
Any suggestions how to save my images?
    Thank you!

I accessed the raw files from the library , .psd and .nef, and tried to open, fail. I sent the files to a friend to try from his computer, fail again.
    Marie,
to save the embedded jpegs from your RAW images, as Frank Caggiano recommended,  try the following in Aperture:
Save the original RAW files to a separate folder.
Set Aperture's Preference in the "Preferences > Import" panel to "Post Import Processing > Camera Previews".
Set Aperture to show the Browser, and not the Viewer or Split view. That is important. The idea is to prevent Aperture from opening the image after importing.
Now import your folder with the saved RAW files by dragging it onto the "Projects" in the Library panel.
You should be seeing perfect thumbnails without any corruption. Drag the thumbnails from the Aperture window to a folder on your Desktop. This should give you high quality JPEGs.
Your test image gave me a 4928x3264 high resolution JPEG.

  • IPhoto Managed Library and Referenced Library. What is the difference?

In a reply regarding iphoto TD mentions managed library and referenced library. What is the difference and how do you set them up?

A Managed Library is the default setting, photos are copied into the iPhoto Library on import. In this scenario, iPhoto is responsible for the file management.
A Referenced Library means that iPhoto does not touch the files when you import them. They remain where they were and iPhoto References them in their location.
Simply go to iPhoto Menu -> Preferences -> Advanced and uncheck 'Copy Files to the iPhoto Library on Import'.
Now iPhoto will not copy the files, but rather simply reference them on your HD. To do this it will create an alias in the Originals Folder that points to your file. It will still create a thumbnail and, if you modify the pics, a Modified version within the iPhoto Library Folder.
However, you need to be aware of a number of potential pitfalls using this system.
    1. Import and deleting pics are more complex procedures
    2. You cannot move or rename the files on your system or iPhoto will lose track of them on systems prior to 10.5 and iPhoto 08. Even with the later versions issues can still arise if you move the referenced files to new volumes or between volumes.
    3. Most importantly, migrating to a new disk or computer can be much more complex.
Always allowing for personal preference, I've yet to see a good reason to run iPhoto in referenced mode unless you're using two photo organisers.
If disk space is an issue, you can run an entire iPhoto Library from an external disk:
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
If you're concerned about accessing the files, There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
*For Users of 10.5 and later*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
*For users of 10.4 and later* ...
Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
For users of 10.6 and later:
You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu. Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and later:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
*For working with an External Editor*
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
Lots of folks are attracted to the idea of a Referenced Library - well I can see my files! But, frankly, unless you're an experienced Mac user I would stay well away. Not infrequently we see folks here complaining that iPhoto has "lost their photos" when what has happened is that they have imported from the Camera Card in Referenced Mode, then erased the card. Even more common, any change in the path the the file - renaming a disk, folder or file - for instance when migrating to a new machine, when trying to make space on the start up disk by moving files off the an external - also causes big problems.
If you really, really want to run a Referenced Library check out Aperture. It has tools that are much stonger in the area - like migrating tools and reconnecting tools.

  • Creative Media Source - PC Music Library Corrupt

0Creative Media Source - PC Music Library Corrupt? After doing some backup utilities on my music archi've, and relocating them to a new larger dri've, I am now receiving messages that my PC Music Library is corrupt, and is unusable. All of my playlists are gone, and I can't make new ones. it attempts to access a backup copy of the PC Music Library, fails at that as well, then reports it will make a new one. This fails as well, and the message recommends to repair the Microsoft jet Databse Engine and the MDAC, etc.
So naturally, I go to the Microsoft website, as instructed by Creative, and that's about as useful as you'd expect...none.
I have attempted to delete what remains of the old one, both via Media Source and Windows (XP),? and have even reinstalled media source. The problem persists. I'm less concerned about recovery of the old playlists than I am simply starting over with new ones (it was time for a redo anyways).
Media Source itself works fine in all other apsects. It can read files, play music, and interact with my Creative Zen Xtra device. But it's all useless if I can't make playlists for use on the PC and transfer to the Zen.
Anyone have any ideas? I just want to be able to use my stuff again.

Re: Creative Media Source - PC Music Library Corruptn Wasn't aware that it was possible, and haven't seen anything that tells how it could be done. Typically I make my playlists in Creative Media Center, in Organizer mode. As I'm pawing through the archi've and want to add a specific track to a playlist, I? right-click>add to playlist, select the playlist from the drop-down, and move on.
After deleting the old corrupted playlist files, and starting over from scratch, here is what happens:? I attempt to add a track to a playlist...no playlists exist, so I create one on the spot. Upon submitting the info, CMS crashes. ? I reopen CMS, now the PC Music Library is corrupted again, the backup is corrupted, and no playlists exist, etc. At that point, I can delete the playlist files again, and start the process over again (resulting in the same: CMS crashes and I have corrupted playlists.)

  • Does aperture 2.1 library need to be on the system partition ??

    Hi !
Does aperture 2.1 library need to be on the system partition ??
Aperture library overfilled my system partition,
So I moved it to another partition by Aperture preferences.
    Aperture sees where it is,
but wants to set up a new library,
I suppose on my full system partition.
    Any suggestions are appreciated,
    as you might guess,
    I am new at Aperture.
Thanks for any interest and help.
    Ken

No the Aperture Library does not need to be on the same partition with the System. It should, however, be on an internal or eSATA-connected drive.
Generally partitioning is a waste of spce. Please describe your exact setup of hard drives and partitions.
What most folks really should have is a Referenced-Masters Library, which deals with the issue of overfilling drives.

I have a long list of gibberish files, in Preferences, in my Library. What are they? How did they get there? Can I delete them without causing a problem?

Here is one thing I found googling for WebEx:
    http://www.webex.com/why-webex/overview.html
(The x64 would most likely mean 64 bit). It may be a Windows based application/plugin, but since I had never heard of either, I'm only guessing there. If you do a search systemwide for it and don't find it plus don't know why it's there, I'd say throw it in the trash (don't empty it yet - make a note of the file path just in case you do have something installed that needs it so you can move it back).
Glad to hear it's not a torrent; some people use those not realizing that quite often there is a price to pay for downloading stuff for free that costs money elsewhere - the software packages quite often include little "add-ons" = malware which you really don't want.

I created two iTunes libraries on my mac mini back in the day. I would like to consolidate them into one iTunes library. What is the easiest method to do this? I do use i-Match to access all my music from  iCloud, if that makes any difference.  Thanks. Mark

Thanks for the reply. When I created the 2 libraries years ago I would hold down the options key and had 2 library names to choose from. Now it just shows a lot of files when I do that, With over 7,000 songs I think I will just look for the few songs from the original library I used to use that still interest me, if they don't show up in my default current library. Thought there would be any easy was to integrate all my music files into one library. I am definitely not going to spend days manually doing this, but thanks again.
