Aperture 3.01 Some Observations

Upgrade to 3.01 a few observations
1) Faces is much faster now. I have tagged 10,000 faces and it is not as painful. Still needs some work.
2) Memory issues a lot better, I have 10 gigs and sometimes that was not enough
3) I still crash once in a while
4) Need to fix orphan flow when you are in faces and double click to view full photo. No way to go back.
5) Sometimes have problems quitting program. (Have to force quit)
6) Need to be able to have hot key to enlarge and decrease brush size so I can map it to my pen.
Please list your observations and fixes.

Working much better than 3.0.0 (memory issues are gone and it's actually usable now) but sadly, there are still a few glitches:
- Export watermarks are still broken (scaled way too big)
- Faces still buggy and crashy (see http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2349481 )
- When double-clicking a person in the "Faces" view, then double-clicking one of the images of that person and then browsing through the images using the arrow keys, Aperture sometimes shows images not belonging to that person
- Magic Mouse scrolling isn't very nice in general, often way too fast and "jumpy" compared to e.g. scrolling a webpage in Safari
- In "Places" especially, scrolling on the Magic Mouse is much too sensitive. Move your finger a bit and it will suddenly zoom all the way in or all the way out. And also: How about limiting zoom to a "up/down" motion, it's also zooming on "left/right" at the moment. Very confusing.
- Sometimes the right side of the viewer is cut off by a few pixels, including the UI elements that surround it, like the "Quick Preview" button on the lower right corner
- Lots of graphical glitches on my Radeon X1600 graphics card when doing adjustments: Flickering, oddly-coloured shapes showing up etc., appears to be a graphics driver problem
- Aperture sometimes decides to update a few thousand thumbnails for no apparent reason (although that might have been caused by the crashes I encountered while using Faces)
- After my update to 3.0.1 Aperture found none of my referenced master images. The images are located on a samba share which was, of course, mounted at the time. However, in the "Referenced files" dialog, the volume was shown as being offline. A "Reconnect all" fixed it but still shouldn't have happened in the first place. See also: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2334989
- [edit] One thing I forgot in my initial posting: The loupe in AP3 still changes magnification by itself from time to time and/or has a strange default magnification after starting Aperture (sometimes 1600%, sometimes 500something% etc.; should be 100% by default IMHO). This behaviour was also present in AP2. See also: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=11045005

  • Is 1.3 Bios really better than 1.52B?? Neo2 Board and Some Observations!

Hi All... I read this post on the forums and it got me thinking and i did some fiddling and made some observations..
This is whith regard to the 1.3Bios being better than the 1.52B Bios.. because it would let you run in turbo mode...
Ok i've spent the last 60mins testing and i came up with the following..
    1.3BIOS
With the 1.3Bios.. no matter what memory timings u set... it does'nt show in CPU-Z and it does'nt make a difference in the memory bandwith scores...
For example my ram was rated at 2.5-3-3-8 .. i changed it to 2.5-2-3-8 .. it did'nt change and my scores remained the same..
Going from Slow to Fast to Turbo.. did'nt incrase my scores.. actually.. donno how.. but i got a decrease in scores..
The only thing that was noticable was that MSI core-center overclocks the CPU a lil more than what is set in BIOS..
    1.52B BIOS
With the 1.52B Bios... u can change the memory timings and it does show in CPU-Z and it makes a massive difference with Sisoft sandra.. 250mbps more..
What u set in the bios .. u get with the 1.52B.. Corecenter does'nt mess around and overclock it more..
Going from Slow to Turbo did give me an increase in scores.. slightly..
Im now running Ultra-Turbo.. and i get a sisoft bandwith score of 5250Mbps at 3.21G..
    CONCLUSION
So infact i think the 1.52B is better than the 1.3 . I don't have a Radeon so i donno how these bios's work with the cards cause i've read about some problems... I'm getting one soon so 'ill post some info about that in a fortnight..
I personally think this board is great.. atleast the one i have.. never had a problem.. had it for 3 months.. i have a revision 1.. no DOT sticker.. and just the Neo2-S version... I've used Spectec 333 on this board too (dual) had no problems..
Wish i had some DDR-500 so i could test whether this board can do 1:1 above 250...whether it has a 1:1 limitation above 285 like some other boards.. that is my only doubt.. anywayz.. i hope atleast some of u are sailing as smoothly with this board as i have..
Get some nice ram .. this Twinmos Dual channel kit DDR400 with the Twinmos chips are really great.. and i recommend it..

That´s wrong. RAM-Settings are displayed fine. Turbo does make a BIG difference in scores. About 15% more performance. In Games and in benchmarks like 3dmark and sandra, too.

Check the Ethernet connection to the AirPort Express. Make sure that the Ethernet connection from the Comcast modem is connected to the WAN port on the back of the AirPort Express. The WAN port is the one with the circle of dots shown over the port.
It sounds like you are connected to the Ethernet LAN port.

  • Stutter Problem - Some Observations

Ok, this stutter thing is driving me crazy and Apple's lack of response is drving me crazier. Here are some observations I have made while researching this bug.
The stutter I am experiencing only happens between songs using crossfade.
Turning crossfade off creates a long gap between songs. You can tell something is still not working right and needs to be fixed, but the stutter does stop by turning crossfade off.
Only certain songs stutter. I have experimented in Party Shuffle with hundreds of songs and have found certain songs stutter and others do not. This could explain why some folks might think a certain fix has solved the problem and then it "mysteriously" returns hours or days later. The songs that stutter will do so no matter what playlist is used so it is not confined to Party Shuffle.
Shuffle has nothing to do with it because it happens with it turned off.
I have compared everything I can think of between the songs that stutter and those that don't and can't find anything (i.e. format, ID3 Tag, Encoded With, etc.) that corelates.
I can fix the songs that stutter by reducing the end time by 3-5 seconds. Try it for yourself. This leads me to believe it has something to do with the way specific songs end and how iTunes starts the next song.
I am convinced this bug is song specific and has nothing to do with what other application is being used on the computer (once the stutter begins it does lock up other apps until the stutter subsides).
Even songs from the same album ripped the same way don't all stutter. For example, "Last Night" by the Strokes stutters while "Someday" from the same album does not.
I hope this leads to some further discussion. If anyone can figure out just what makes certain songs "different" from the rest might hold a clue to the problem. I apologize if this particular theory about the stutter has been addressed elsewhere on the board. I did a search and could not find anything. Thanks for reading and lets get to the bottom of this mess!
P.S. Maybe a list of songs that stutter might be helpful. Two songs that stutter on my system are "Last Night" by the Strokes and "Home" by Depeche Mode. I have many others but I'll just share two for now. For comparison a song that does not is "Beverly Hills" by Weezer.
P.S.S. Does anyone else find it odd that this problem appeared around the same time Microsoft was set to release their music service?

I don't use cross fade and I still ahve the stutter. The stutter is not consistant, however, since I can listen to a song once and it's fine and then listen to it again but it will skip. The skip is not always in the same spot either.
I moved my library from an external drive to an internal fast HD then reinstalled everything (Quicktime, iTunes) after completely removing both from my HD and registry. Even after the move and the reinstall I stil get some skipping, although not as frequently.
There is still one more problem that has not been completely resolved and that's the distortion that exists. It's a problem that has been around ever since the introduciton of itunes 7 and even though it has been better after the initial release it is still present enough to be annoying.

  • Some observations in Beta 4

    Some observations in Beta 4:
    - I miss the zoom option 1.44 : 1 - this would be useful to display 12MP files as 6MP, i.e. Fuji S5 PRO files.
    - I cannot configure the export tool to open the original file (RAW or JPEG) without copying the file to a different location. If the export Imageformat is set to "Original" and the destination was the original directory, it should simply not copy anything but still open the postprocess application. This is useful to send RAW files to other RAW tools.
    - Please make it possible to hide the modules, such as "Map" and "Book"
    - The import dialog crashes (or runs into endeless operaion) if "Include Subfolders" was used sometimes before and a directory with many sub directories is selected. It should ask again before it loads all the files.
    - The RAW developing of Fuji X100 Files is slower than Nikon files
    - Developing of Fuji X10 Files using the dual pixel SN or DR EXR Modes seem to be stretch the width by about 5%.

    Hi,
my usual work around is to "show file in explorer" and then use drag&drop to edit the file in other program. Unfortunately this does not work with many files at once.
    >>But what is the point in using Lightroom, if you're developing in another raw processor?
I really enjoy the catalog function and in general the development - but there are cases when it makes sense to open a file in a specialized RAW program, i.e. the camera specific application.
But more important are tasks where I want to do something with the RAW data which is not developing. For example copy it to a ZIP or backup program. Or maybe I simply need to pass the original file name to an external database/EXIF program.
It is simply so that LR has a bug here. It should not ignore the rest of the process only if I choose the destination to be the same as the original. It can ignore the copying, but should still send the file to the selected tool.

I want to delete aperture to create some space, will my photos remain in iPhoto?
Deleting Aperture will not create much free space, it is just one GB.
But you can open any Aperture library in iPhoto, if the versions are compatible. To open an Aperture 3.5.1 library you need iPhoto 9.5.1.
Before you delete Aperture make sure, that you have no photos rejected in Aperture.  iPhoto will not be able to reveal any Aperture rejected photos, just as Aperture cannot reveal any photos that have been hidden in iPhoto.

  • Some observations on my first use of Data Modeler Beta

First of all, I can see this tool has a lot of promise.
I hope Oracle keeps at it, it could turn into a real winner if all the features I see being worked on mature.
    Thanks!
Here are a few observations on things that I found non-obvious or tedious to do.
    1. When designing an entity, I want to give it a name, a definition, attributes and keys. I want that process to be quick and require the minimum amount of mouse-clicking/navigation fiddling as possible. The current way of defining the attribute's datatype and size is painfully slow. I have to click to get a pop-up. Then I have to click to choose from a set of categories. Then I have to click on a dropdown list. If I try to use the down-arrow on the dropdown list, it works, but not if I go past the one I want. The up-arrow won't take me backwards in the list, so more clicking. It's just a nasty, slow interface to do a simple task that I have to do a thousand times in a data model. If I need to change the size of something, back I go thru the entire process all over again.
That makes it doubly slow to work in the most natural way, which is to list the attributes and the datatypes, then come back and refine the sizes once the model is maturing and relatively stable.
    2. Adding an additional attribute requires a mouse click instead of a down-arrow. That means I have to take my hands off the keyboard to add a new attribute. Maybe there is some short-cut key that does that, but I have better things to do than memorize non-standard keyboard mappings. Make the down/up arrows works as they should.
    3. Adding the comment that describes the attributes is not quite as slow, but still requires more keystrokes/mouse movements than it should. It's hard enough to get developers to document their attributes, don't discourage them.
    4. I can't see the list of attributes, data types, sizes, key/mandatory settings, and the comment at one time while editing the entity. Makes it harder to grasp what all the attributes mean at a glance, which slows down the modeling and the comprehension of an existing model.
    5. All the entities I created had primary keys with columns in them. But when I tried to have it build a physical model, it complained that some relationships had no columns in them. For the life of me, I couldn't figure out how to fix that. Never had that problem in any other case tool.
    6. Getting it to generate DDL was awkward to find. Make it something obvious, like a button on the toolbar that says "Generate DDL".
    7. Apostrophes in the Comments in RDBMS are not escaped, so the generated DDL won't run.
    8. For the ease of use/speed of use testing on high-volume key tasks, make the developers do the task 1000 times in a row. Make them use long names that require typing, not table A with columns c1, c2 and c3. Long before they get to iteration 1000 they will have many ideas on how to make that task easier and faster to do.
    9. Make developers use names of things that are the maximum length allowed. For example, for a table name in oracle, the max length of the name is 30 characters. The name of one testing table should be AMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMZ. That's a capital A followed by 28 capital M's and a capital Z. For numbers, use the pattern 1555559. If the developers can't see the A and Z or 1 and 9 in the display area for the name in the default layout for the window, they did the display layout wrong. For places where the text can be really long, choose a "supported visible length" for that field and enter data in the pattern AMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMQMMMMMMMMZ, where Q is placed at the supported visible length. if the A and Q don't show, the layout is wrong.
    10. SQL Developer has quite a few truly gooberish UI interaction designs and I can see some of that carrying over to the Data Modeler tool. I really recommend getting a windows UI expert to design the ui interface, not a java expert. I've seen a lot of very productive windows user interfaces and extremely few java interfaces suitable for high-speed data entry. Give the UI expert the authority to tell the java programmers "I don't want to hear about java coding internals - make the user interface perform this way." I think the technical limitations in java UIs are much less than the mindset limitations I've seen in all to many programmers. That, and making the developers use their code 1000 times in a row to perform key tasks will cause the UI to get streamlined considerably.
Thanks, and keep up the good work!

    Dear David,
Again thank you for your valuable and highly appreciated feedback. Find included a more elaborated answer to your observations:
*1. When designing an entity, I want to give it a name, a definition, attributes and keys.*
In the new Early Adopter Release, a "SQL developer like" property window has been added for Entities and Tables. For each attribute/column you will have the ability to add name, datatype, Primary Key, Mandatory and comment from one and the same screen
*2. Adding an additional attribute requires a mouse click instead of a down-arrow.*
An enhancement request has been created
*3. Adding the comment that describes the attributes is not quite as slow, but still requires more keystrokes/mouse movements than it should.*
In the new Early Adopter Release, a "SQL developer like" property window has been added for Entities and Tables. For each attribute/column you will have the ability to add name, datatype, PK, M and comment from one and the same screen
*4. I can't see the list of attributes, data types, sizes, key/mandatory settings, and the comment at one time while editing the entity. Makes it harder to grasp what all the attributes mean at a glance, which slows down the modeling and the comprehension of an existing model.*
See former answers. For meaning of attributes you can also use the Glossary and Naming Standardization facilities: see Tools Option menu, Glossary and General Options for naming standards
*5. All the entities I created had primary keys with columns in them. But when I tried to have it build a physical model, it complained that some relationships had no columns in them. For the life of me, I couldn't figure out how to fix that. Never had that problem in any other case tool.*
A Bug report has been created. Issue will most probably be solved in the nexr Early Adopter release
*6. Getting it to generate DDL was awkward to find. Make it something obvious, like a button on the toolbar that says "Generate DDL".*
An enhancement request has been created.
*7. Apostrophes in the Comments in RDBMS are not escaped, so the generated DDL won't run.*
A bug report has been created
*8. For the ease of use/speed of use testing on high-volume key tasks, make the developers do the task 1000 times in a row. Make them use long names that require typing, not table A with columns c1, c2 and c3. Long before they get to iteration 1000 they will have many ideas on how to make that task easier and faster to do.*
I aplogize, but I don't understand clearly what you want to say with the use/speed of use here.
*9. Make developers use names of things that are the maximum length allowed.*
Our relational model is for use for not just Oracle, but also DB2, SQL Server and in the future maybe other database systems. Whicjh means that we can't taylor it to just one of these database systems. However you can set maxinum name lenghts by clicking right on the diagram and select Model Properties and here you can set naming Options. Here you can also use the Glossary and Naming Standardization facilities: see Tools Option menu, Glossary and General Options for naming standards
*10. SQL Developer has quite a few truly gooberish UI interaction designs and I can see some of that carrying over to the Data Modeler tool.*
Fully agree. As you will see in our next Early Adopter release we have started to use SQL Developer like UI objects.

  • Some Observations

I've been a long-time Photoshop user and was one of those who ordered Aperture practically on the day it was announced after viewing the excellent videos and reading the descriptions on the Apple web site. I've been following the discussions on this forum and, for awhile at least, was somewhat swayed by those who argued that the program was flawed and extremely weak compared with the functions offered in Photoshop. I almost explored the possibility of getting my money back.
This morning, while working in Aperture and thinking about the way Apple sold the program to professionals, it occurred to me that I, and probably many others, have misunderstood the real purpose of Aperture.
Aperture, I suspect, was never intended as a final output tool for fine art prints, wedding photos, or portraits. It's primary purpose is to sort, catalog, rate, and organize photographs, via its elegant Projects hierarchy, and to output preliminary proof sheets, slide shows, and contact sheets for clients. It allows you to create different versions of a photograph to present to a client for approval. Viewed from this perspective, Aperture fulfills it's purpose very nicely.
Some have complained about the lack of a curves function, weak sharpening, and poor noise reduction compared to Photoshop. But in reality a full blown curves function is not necessary to create adequate contact sheets and proofs. Levels, expecially with the ability to adjust quarter tones, is perfectly adequate. I'd like to see somewhat stronger correction tools for color casts, but again, what's there is adequate for the program's intent and I suspect results will improve as I adjust to the interface.
I would certainly send the final print selection to Photoshop for the final version for a client. As many have pointed out, Aperture's tools can't touch the ability of Adobe Camera Raw for extracting the most information from a Raw file but, again, I don't believe that is Aperture's purpose.
I've been impressed with Aperture's ability to rapidly import Raw files from a memory card (faster than Bridge and lightyears ahead of Nikon's pathetic software). The speed at which I'm able to browse through raw files and the impressive loupe tool, the stacking function, and the ability to organize folders, albums, and books is remarkable.
My conclusion, and that of a few other posters here on this forum, is that Aperture is exactly what Apple advertised. It is Version 1.0 so, like all early adopters, we're all advanced-stage beta testers. It's the nature of the beast. I'm willing to give Apple time to address the program's real problems. I think I got my money's worth and I'm looking foreward to seeing where Apple goes with this software, which I believe has enormous potention for professional and advanced amateur photographers.

    Very interesting post, Keith.
You're certainly on the ball about what Aperture can do--those organizational & versioning tools are definitely worth a lot, and the "reviews" I've seen tend to ignore them completely. So that's very helpful.
But I do think you are selling Aperture a little short.
It appears that Apple is promoting Aperture as an end-all be-all tool for those photographs that don't need detailed retouching.
There's a wide spectrum of possibilities for defining those photographs that don't need detailed retouching. At one extreme are photographers who take JPEGs out of the camera, maybe do some cropping, and have their final output (whether that's printed or a web page or what have you). At the other extreme are those photographers who spend quite a bit of effort in Photoshop on most every image they take--burning, dodging, cloning, filtering, etc. The former will find Aperture does all of what they need; the latter will find that Aperture is the first step of a longer workflow.
I'm somewhere in the middle. I do raw exclusively, and up until now have used Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) to do white balance, exposure, shadows, brightness, and contrast. That's pretty much it (plus cropping and final sharpening) for 90%+ of my images. The other 10% or so I'll take into Photoshop and spend some extra time on.
So for me, and other people like me, Aperture has to do more than "just good enough for proofs." It should do "good enough for final output." And I think Apple is expecting this.
Unlike some other people here, however, I think Apple will fix the raw converter issues they're having. I don't think their raw converters are "fundamentally broken" or other such nonsense. Their next versions will probably be much, much better. They'll never be exactly the same as, say, Adobe's, but no 2 raw converters are ever exactly the same.
So Aperture should be able to do 100% of the workflow for 90% of my images.
Apple's raw converters are currently "mixed"; within a few months I expect them to be "very good", and within 6 months to a year "excellent".

  • Apple TV V2: Some observations concerning the new software...

I recently updated my Apple TV (160 GB) to the V2 software without - on first sight - any obvious problem. I'm running iTunes 7.6 on an iMac G5 with my iTunes library (approx. 60 GB) completely on the internal HD. My iTunes library is synced to the Apple TV (-> Custom Sync with "Show only synced items on the Apple TV" checked) meaning I don't stream any content from this computer.
There is a second iMac G5 in the network (my girlfriend's iMac) which is configured to share its iTunes library with Apple TV meaning the shared content is streamed.
While getting familiar with the V2 software I made some (strange?) observations I would like to share in this forum:
    1) Apple TV V2 now is always visible in iTunes on the iMac providing the shared library; with the V1 software this happened only in iTunes on the iMac providing the synced library which - by the way - didn't change. Can anyone confirm this behaviour?
    2) In the Music Menu I don't see the entry "Music Videos" from the iTunes store. I'm living in Germany and I know Apple's knowledgebase article about missing entries reflecting the missing features of the local iTunes store. But the German iTunes store is selling Music Videos (but no movies, TV shows, and movie rentals). All other entries valid for the German iTunes store are correctly visible. Could any German Apple TV V2 user please confirm that "Music -> Music Videos" is missing in Germany in spite of the German iTunes store selling Music Videos?
    3) Empty static playlists don't show up on Apple TV V2 after a successful sync, but they show up on the Apple TV device in iTunes if you open it by clicking the little arrow in front of it to inspect the synced content from there. This means the sync is okay but somehow the Apple TV V2 GUI doesn't show them. I know empty static playlists don't make much sense, but I noticed this behaviour and I would like to know if someone can confirm it.
    4) Empty dynamic playlists only show up on Apple TV V2 after a successful sync if iTunes on the iMac with the synced library is running! Please note: as stated above I have "Show only synced items on the Apple TV" checked. There should be no dynamic behaviour concerning the shown content of the synced library. Again: can someone confirm this behaviour?
    5) The "Recently Added" playlist is always visible on Apple TV V2. This playlist is not synced, but it is visible on Apple TV V2 regardless of iTunes running on the iMac with the synced library or not. Remember: as stated above I have "Show only synced items on the Apple TV" checked and this playlist is not and was never synced. I tried to toggle the sync state of this playlist several times followed by successfull syncs, but whatever I do: "Recently Added" remains visible on the Apple TV V2; all other playlists don't show this "feature". Can anybody confirm this behaviour?
    6) Internet radio stations are not working at all for me in a synced playlist. I followed the threads with this topic and came to the conclusion that we now can put internet radios stations from iTunes in a playlist, sync this playlist to Apple TV V2 and - as long as iTunes is running on the iMac with the synced library - the radio stations will be visible, selectable and playable on Apple TV V2. This does not work for me: as long as iTunes with the synced library is running I can see the playlist on Apple TV 2, but it is empty meaning the internet radio stations are not visible. I made sure that the radio stations are checked in the synced iTunes library, but no success: just an empty playlist on Apple TV V2 which completely disappears as soon as I quit iTunes on the iMac with the synced library. Anybody suffering from this behaviour, too?
    7) If I open the Apple TV V2 device in iTunes on the iMac with the synced library by clicking the little arrow in front of it (just to inspect its contents), I find that some playlists on Apple TV V2 show items which definitly don't belong to them. Interestingly these "wrong items" are only shown in iTunes; they don't show up directly on Apple TV V2 on the TV screen. Can anybody confirm this behaviour?
All in all I see my "smooth" upgrade to the V2 software now in a completely different light. I fear my "perfect sync" pre to the V2 update is somehow broken...
Or is this all expected behaviour?
    Any comment is appreciated.
    Thank you, Michael.

Hi Mike...for your question #3, I found a couple discussion threads about this issue which appears to be 'possibly' either a software glitch or Apple's way of discouraging people from listening to free music and forced to purchase music.
Anyhow here are the two discussion threads:

  • Shuffle USB Problem - Some Observations

I decided to start a new thread with some additional observations I have made regarding the Shuffle and USB problems. Some of this already appeared as a reply to the "ipod usb" thread. Anyway recapping from my previous post:
When plugged into the USB port of my machine, the front LEDs (above the control area) flash the following:
GREEN and ORANGE (YELLOW?) flash together for between 1/4 and 1/2 second. This is followed by the GREEN LED alone for about 1.5 seconds. 3 seconds of nothing, then it repeats. The battery condition LED on the back (below the ON/OFF switch blinks ORANGE for about 1/4 second every 4 seconds.
Plugging the Shuffle into another computer (a laptop), the Shuffle is recognized and the LEDs behave normally.
Now the weird thing is that the Shuffle had worked on the machine where it is now not recognized. In fact the iTunes 7.0.1 diagnostics show the serial number of the Shuffle as the last iPod connected. Also, the USB on the iTunes machine is a USB 1.0 and on the laptop is USB 2.0.
    NEW OBSERVATIONS:
My 20GB Click Wheel iPod works fine under 7.0.1. The fact that it works leads me to believe the USB port and power are fine. If it the USB port can drive a hard disk iPod, it better be able to drive a Shuffle!
I loaded up the version of iTunes that came with the Shuffle on another Windows 2000 box I have. The Shuffle was recognized and did a RESTORE on it. Windows even recognized it. The version of Windows IS NOT as currently patched as the computer on which I have iTunes 7.0.1 installed.
I uninstalled iTunes 7.0.1 and installed version 6.0. Aside from 6.o not starting because some file got converted, Win2000 still did not recognize the Shuffle.
    So here are my thoughts:
    1) A recent Windows 2000 patch causes Shuffles to be ignored by the OS. There is a comment about a problem like this with XP, but I was not able to find anything Win2000 related. The machine I am having problems with is up to dat with regard to patches.
    2) If V7.0.01 is the problem, even uninstalling it and reinstalling an old version of iTunes leaves some part of the driver or something that still causes problems.
    3) The Phillips Pronto remote software I installed somehow causes a bad interaction with only the Shuffle. Remember, my click wheel iPod still works!
Right now I am leaning towards an issue specific to Windows2000 and the Shuffle. Maybe a conspiracy to get us all to buy Zunes?
If anyone has additional observations or suggestions on how to fix the problem, I (and a bunch of other people) would really like to hear from you.
    Thanks!
    Don

Okay, I got focused on the fact that other machines
would recognize my Shuffle, but not my main machine.
It dawned on me that the Windows Registry stores
information about USB devices whether or not they
are plugged in, so I snooped around and found the
    entries for the iPod.
I did some searches and found a reference to this MS
    KB article:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315539/en-us
Basically describes how to show the "hidden" (i.e.
removed USB) devices. Went into the USB section and
deleted the 2 entries I had for iPods (my Shuffle and
    20GB click wheel).
Plugged my Shuffle in and BINGO! Windows recognized
the Shuffle and iTunes 7.0.1 recognized the Shuffle!
In fact, as I write this post, my poor little
Shuffle is having my jogging play list reinstalled
since it got wacked by the 'restore' on the other
    machine.
Bottom line, it looks like I managed to solve my
green and orange LEDs of death problem!
    Your mileage may vary!
    Good luck!
    Don
Yes, great, this is a fix for this problem. Thank you very much.

  • Some observations regarding passwords and the App Store

It used to be that installing or upgrading an app, even free ones, required your inputting your AppleID. There would be a five- to ten-minute grace period during which you needn't enter it again, but afterwards you would be required to re-enter the password. Which made sense: No one wants unauthorized users to start buying up potentially expensive apps without permission.
This is still the case with the iPhone. What's surprising is that this is no longer the case with the iPad. Recently I've noticed that after a good day or two without accessing the App Store, updating apps no longer asks for my password. Given virtually all updates are free, I'm assuming this applies to (free) updates. INSTALLING free apps may or may not require the re-entering of passwords; I don't know, I haven't tried it yet. I'm certainly hoping that password re-entry will be required with paid apps. (Cue story of kid purchasing a $100 app on mom's iPad.)
I'm also assuming that the iPhone continues to ask for passwords -- (free) updates or not -- perhaps because as a truly mobile device, it needs to retain a bit more restrictiveness. I don't necessarily agree, since how much trouble can a free updates cause? (Unless of course you wanted to keep an older version for some reason.) As illustrated, the App Store on the iPad, at least, doesn't seem to require password re-entry anymore, at least for updates.
Is this something anyone else has observed, or is it only my iPad that's somehow affected?

Well, I pulled out my other iPad, and when I tried to update some apps, the App Store did require my password. So it may be this particular iPad that somehow has lost its ability to ask for my password when updating apps, or maybe even downloading paid apps. (I'm not eager to try that yet.) FWIW, this iPad also had the issue of updating apps resulting in long wait times before finally downloading; this was fixed by using "Reset All Settings" under General Settings. Perhaps the two phenomena are related? I may try erasing all settings are seeing if that fixes these nconsistencies once and for all. Let y'all know.

  • Some observations in power saver in E71

    I have observed the following:
    1. If the any power saver other than the blank screen is running, and the key pad is also locked, and then you press the D-pad central button, it shows the date, time and some other info in large font (as expected). But once the button is de-pressed, it does not return the power saver, but shows blank screen.
    2. Breathing light works only with blank screen as power saver, or if one reaches blank screen, as mentioned in the first point.
Any comments on this? In my opinion, for point 1, it should have returned to the power saver set up originally, instaed of the blank screen. The second point seems ok though, though it woould be good to have breating light in all the power savers.
    Regards,
    BK76

Yup, I concur with tobiasrieper. if you have breathing lights off, it will return to the power saver.
Anyways, hopefully some consistency will be introduced in the future firmwares. Also, it may be a good idea to link the breathing light to the power saver option, rather than profile settings. However, this is more subjective, and depends on personal preference!!

  • Aperture only imports some of photos from my camera card.

When I put my camera card into my iMac and it opens Aperture only some o f the photos are set to import and the wheel spins endlessly.  I have to manually import from the desktop to get it to work. This happens with all of my cards. Any solutions? I've been assuming that it's something to do with Yosemite. Sometimes it does import them all but more often it doesn't.  Ron

Did iPhoto launch? Check iPhoto and see if they in there.
Did you put it on the right side of the dock where the stacks are? Check in Documents.
A folder with a question mark usually means the dock item is no longer connected to an application.

  • Migrating from Aperture to LR - some questions

    Hey all,
I'm a current user of Aperture and I'm considering going to LightRoom but I have some questions/concerns.  I downloaded the demo and I'm playing with that but given my lack of knowledge, I wanted to ask some questions to get a feel for the product.
I'm not sure if my current aperture library is considered large or not but I have about 75gig of images to which I have them organized by project.  Since the birth of my girls I've been focusing a lot on them - go figure   Anyways the setup I have for them is a good example in how I typically setup up my images within Aperture. I'm not sure how easy (or not so easy this can be done with LR)
As you can see I have a folder called twins, then the year and finally the month.  The purple icons are smart albums, basically images that pass muster and I upload to smugmug.
I basically would like to have something along those lines in LR - have my images organized by event, date (if need be) and then a smart album of images that I'll be publishing.
I'm still getting used to the interface, there are things I definitely like and some things I need to work on a little more.  Any advice on moving from aperture to LR would be helpful though I do want to qualify that I'm still checking it out and have not made a decision to jump ship quite yet.
Finally are there any deals or such to lower the price of LR?

"while LR shows you your folders, offers the temptation of trying to categorise by them (resist it!), and allows you to organise and categorise by collections. You you aren't forced to use virtual folders, but can and should."
So you're saying don't organize the images in the physical folders - that's going to be a hard habit to break.  In playing with LR last night, I created a separate catalog called twins09 and I exported my masters (with the sidecar) out of aperture by folder, i.e., January09 goes into a separate folder, as does June09 etc.  I then created my smart collections of keepers by using the 5 stars and date constraints that LR provides, i.e, greater the 20090430 and less then 20090601 for May09 images.
What you're recommending is to create a twins 2009 folder and store all images there and then use collections/smart collections to organize the images.  Interesting. Given the habits I've picked up using aperture that will be a difficult adjustment.

  • Moved from MBP to iMac and aperture library has some odd issues.

    Hello
I have just got myself a nice new iMac today and I have copied my aperture 3 library over from the Macbook Pro and I thought all was well but I now seem to have some problems.
Some of the images would load and then just disapear but if I zoom in they are there? If I export the version I just get a black image.
In the other project as I go through and the image loads but then gets obscure makes across it or its half blue.
Then when I was going through the library it was jumping back to a image I looked at before.
If anyone could help with this it would be fantastic because the reason I got the iMac was for aperture 3.
    Thanx in advance!!
    Spoony

You may find the iMac is still processing. This could take a while to complete. Is it showing the little grey wheel. If so just leave it to get on with it. Trying to do other things at the same time is too much for it to cope with. The r.a.m. will probably be working overtime with less capacity than it really needs to do the job efficiently. You don't say how large or small the library is. Or the iMac spec, but i would be surprised if it's anything other than this. You could phone the Apple Support team to confirm. It's free with the new machine. Allan
