Aperture 3.02 Export Rate
Wow! Where do I begin with this? Exporting images from Aperture is so excruciatingly slow, it is really impeding my work flow. Exporting an image to jpeg at 50% takes approximately 4:45 if done in a batch. If done individually, it takes 3:45.
I tried a lower resolution (1024 X 1024), the export time is still 3:45. As I'm working on a project, I have 23 images to export. I calculated it would take over 86 minutes to export them to my desktop. My gosh, this is utterly frustrating. I used to be able to export images out of Aperture 2 in a rush to get things done.
Does anyone know any fixes to this? It seems to have worsen over time. This is the first Apple application that has caused me to question if they're losing their touch.
By the way, uploading images via the Aperture Facebook Uploader is even worse. I've given up on that. Uploading an album with about 24 images takes over 90 minutes. And clearly, exporting them first doesn't help, since Aperture's export function is clearly not helpful. Getting images to print for customers and clients has turned into a lengthy process.
Anyone else is having this trouble and if so, what have you done to handle it?
AN UPDATE: I've spent the past hour or so exporting in 50% of original (jpeg). My original estimate of 3 minutes and 45 seconds per photo did not take into consideration other processes running on my machine. So, apparently the export function slows down even further when MobileMe is synchronizing or when Time Machine is backing up. So it seems that almost one hour into my export, only 11 of 23 images actually exported.
This is incredulous. Definitely to first Apple application that I feel actually decreased my productivity. I surely hope they fix this soon.

Aperture Photo JPEG Export Size
I have a question regarding the file sizes of photos exported from Aperture. When exported the photos seem to be almost double the file size of the original photo imported to aperture and the size shown in Aperture. For example, I have a photo that is 2736x3648 sized at 3.51MB in Aperture. I export with JPEG set to original size, JPEG quality is set to 12. The resulting file size exported is 7.1MB. The resolution of the exported photo is also 2736x3648 so I don't think it's a DPI issue. I've done some experimentation with the JPEG quality and the results are still strange. 10 gives me a 2.2MB file, 11 gives me a 2.6MB file and 12 as mentioned previously is 7.1MB. Seems like a huge jump so I suspect I'm missing something. The other sizes being smaller than the original also seems strange.
I've looked at the exported photos at 10,11&12 and can clearly see the detail lost. The darker parts get darker and drop the detail in the photo. I'm very reluctant to lose quality so ideally would go with 12.
I know there are a few questions like this on here already but none of them seem to have a good answer. Just wondering if anyone has figured it out?
Thanks in advance.Terence, you've helped me on a lot of things, so I guess I am going to further ask for clarification....
I have recently been trying to use Aperture solely (and pretty much abandon iPhoto.). But, when I say export a file to jpeg (whether it is currently a RAW or JPEG file, I am concerned about my settings-- by default, the setting "export jpeg in original size" has settings as 72 dpi. I have changed that to 300dpi. Is this why I have 15-20MB files? Is this the correct setting? I don't want any printer to have a false representation of how much data is there. Nor do I want to lose any data either.
I could theoretically take any photo and probably even say 4500dpi, and the file would be exaggerated that much more. I go to print, and the print center sees there is plenty of resolution there, but in reality, there is no more data there than the extent to which the file provided. You can't create resolution that is going to improve on what your camera or the minor adjustments you do to it to improve it. I say export it at whatever maximum dpi it has or multiply that dpi by 100, and no matter what, the image is going to print the same no matter how much data (or how large the box is).
Also, if I open my library in iPhoto and tell it to export the photo at original size, the file is smaller than the file exported via Aperture (thus my concern I am providing more detail than what is really there) and providing an exagerrated resolution. Your help is greatly appreciated. I am providing a disk to someone, and this is affecting whether I give them one or two disks due to the file sizes. (And, of course, as is, the file sizes are harder to work with if you want to email. So, if they don't have an email program that auto-condenses, they may be frustrated not having smaller files if they choose to email any.)
Thanks in advance! -
Aperture, date and export/save on a HD
Hi all !
I'm starting to get used to Aperture, but i can't do something i'd like to...
I want to shoot in RAW, adjust pictures on Aperture and then export them on my HD as a .jpg (cause it takes less space) to save them. The thing is that when i export them, it changed time and date of the originals (which is logic in a certain way...) but i want to keep an idea of when i took those pictures...
I don't know if i was clear enough but do you have any ideas ??
Thanks !There are two kinds of metadata involved when you consider jpeg or other image files.
One is the file data. This is what the Finder shows. This tells you nothing about the contents of the file, just the File itself.
The problem with File metadata is that it can easily change as the file is moved from place to place or exported, e-mailed, uploaded etc.
Photographs have also got both Exif and IPTC metadata. The date and time that your camera snapped the Photograph is recorded in the Exif metadata. Regardless if what the file date says, this is the actual time recorded by the camera.
Photo applications like iPhoto, Aperture, Lightroom, Picasa, Photoshop etc get their date and time from the Exif metadata.
When you export from iPhoto to the Finder new file is created containing your Photo (and its Exif). The File date is - quite accurately - reported as the date of Export. However, the Photo Date doesn't change.
The problem is that the Finder doesn't work with Exif.
So, your photo has the correct date, and so does the file, but they are different things. To sort on the Photo date you'll need to use a photo app. -
Aperture 3 problem export (or share) photos via outlook
I have Aperture 3.5.1; Outlook for Mac 2011 version 14.3.9
When I try to export (or share) photos via email using Outlook I can see the little wheel on Aperture spin saying "exporting" however it does NOT open a new email window and I cannot find out where the photos have gone. In Aperture preferences I have set Outlook; Tiff 8 and sRGG; 300dpi and medium size.
It used to work however I simply cannot figure out the problem. I can export to desktop and move them that way but extra steps and unnecessary. Any help great appreciated.
ThanksThere are some known problems with Outlook Mac 2011 in Mavericks 10.9.1 - see: http://www.macwindows.com/Mavericks-10_9_1-fix-OS-X-email-snafus-but-Outlook-not -mentioned.html
Since I don't use Outlook as Mail client, I don't know, if the Mavericks Update to Mavericks 10.9.2 fixed this. But it cannot hurt to update, since this update included bug fixes. -
Aperture won't export all photos to Mail
Most of the time, Aperture won't export all my chosen photos to Mail. If I chose 8 photos, it may only export 4 of them and no matter what I do, nothing changes. Tried it on Entourage and it was exactly the same. Size is not the issue, I'm sending them in small sizes and the total attachment is about 1 MB. Anyone had this issue and know what to do? I do have NIK plug ins installed if that helps any.
I would suggest you do a library repair to see if that clears it up.
See Aperture 3: Troubleshooting Basics -
since yesterday i encounter the same problem as some described before.
Aperture 'refuses' to export my foto's.
It keeps saying 'exporting' in the bottom of the screen and quitting the program is not posibble, the only solution is to perform a forced stop.
When i open the program afterwards there's a message where the prog advises to repair the library. (which is not the solution to the problem)
any ideas how to fix this irritating bug? my OS is V 10.2.8 & i have the latest version of Aperture 3.4.1 (which appears to be useless now)
thx for the feedback !my OS is V 10.2.8
You mean Mac OS 10.8.2, right?
Does Aperture hang when exporting any image, or does it only happen for some of your images? Are you trying to export versions or original images?
Sometimes Aperture hangs, when it is processing a single, corrupted image.
If the problem only occurs with certain images, remove them from your library, but if you are having this problem with all images, try the Aperture 3: Troubleshooting Basics
I'd start with removing Preferences and presets, and then try the other options.

Is anyone here using the Aperture to pBase export plugin?
And figured out how to make it work without crashing? What a great little plug in and timesaver! I just wish I could get it to work without crashing Aperture every time I try to export even one photo. Maybe I need to switch to another photo site....... I hate to do that as I have years of photos on pBase.
I'm with you, and bringing this conversation to the forefront, Aperture 2 and export to PBase still aren't cooperating as of today (Jan 22, 09).
Really now... I'm thinking of joining PBase, but no way if I have this much difficulty exporting.
Anyone have any solutions?

My Photo website host (SmugMug) converts uploaded video files at a specific Data Rate in Mbps before installing them. I would like to compress my slideshow video file to the same rate before I upload it to reduce file size and upload time. When I choose the "Custom" setting for an Export, I can choose 1 of the 5 Quality choices and see the estimated file size. But, I cannot know what the actual Data Rate is until after I wait a long time to export the slideshow (hours for a long slideshow) and then examine the resulting file in QuickTime Player's Inspector.
I ran a few tests using a short slideshow (16 images, 1:23 mins/secs) at 1,728 x 1,080 resolution to find out the bit rates for various quality level choices.
Export setting Quality Resulting bit rate File Size
HD 1080p default 20.68 Mbps 214.8 MBytes
Custom Best 20.49 212.8
Custom High 6.25 65.0
Custom Medium 3.97 41.3
However, I don't know if those bit rates will be the same for different length slideshows or for different output resolutions. My SmugMug host site uses an 8.0 Mbps rate for a 1728 x 1080 video file. If I choose Custom/Best, my file will be almost 3 times bigger and much higher quality than necessary, but if I choose Custom/High, my file will be smaller and lower quality than SmugMug's converted version.
I have installed MPEG StreamClip that will let me convert an exported Aperture slideshow video file, and StreamClip allows me to choose a specific bit rate in Mbps. But, I would prefer not having to do a 2 step process (Export from Aperture, then convert in StreamClip). -
Aperture and Flickr Export Problems - Missing Files
I have a MacPro, Aperture 3, and Flickr Pro account. I was planning on using Flickr as an online storage/back-up option for lower-res files. However, whenever I try to upload a project to Flickr files always seem to drop off.
For example, if I export a project with 446 files in it, when it gets to Flickr it'll say I only have 403 images. Likewise if I try a smaller project (e.g., 426 -> 404).
Has this happened to anyone else? Any ideas what is the cause of this problem?
Also, any way to remove that 500 upload limit per project to Flickr? Flickr itself does not limit the number of photos you can store in a set.
Thanks!Maybe it's related to this bug?

Aperture Crashing on Export in Lion
Upgraded to Lion from SL and Aperture started crashing half of the time when exporting images (just before the save dialog comes up). Formatted drive and clean installed Lion then did a migration from my TM backup, fixed permissions on main drive, then on Aperture Library, even repaired the library with no luck. Searched these forums last night and came across something about contextual menu plugins so I removed the only one I could find (Ecamm) but that didn't help either. Below is a crash report I just got, I would greatly appreciate any suggestions, thanks!

Aperture won't export : Retina MacBook Pro
I've been struggling with getting all sorts of basic stuff to work on my supposedly top spec 15" Retina MacBook Pro, the latest is that it can't seem to export from Aperture. Finder really slow, attaching files to emails takes ages to open etc - so wondering if it is part of this problem.
Has anyone else experienced this. Obviously being a Pro App I'm going to be charged handsomly to talk to anyone at apple.
Occasionally it can export a single image at a time, the export folder location takes ages to open. Select multiple images and select "Exprt Versions" and absolutely nothing happens. Export originals, and it crashes Aperture. I'm begining to wonder just how far you can throw a MacBook Pro.
It really is the most disapointing Mac I have ever bought, lovely display, but if the computer behind it doesn't function its all a little pointless.
Done the usual reboot, disk permissions etc.
Thanks for any pointers
StephenStephen,
It is new (ish, about 90 days, and covered by Applecare) but calling Apple help - as I have previously - as soon as you mention it is Aperture they want to charge money - a lot of it and with no guarantee of results - to talk about any issues as it is a Pro App - pity it doesn't behave like one!
Finder really slow, attaching files to emails takes ages to open etc - so wondering if it is part of this problem.
I'd really let the Apple Store sort out the system and hardware issues, as long as your Applecare lasts.
Make a backup of your system, best a bootable clone on an external drive (so you can easily revert back to your current state, or run your apps by booting into the clone) and reinstall the system without any third party apps and without Aperture, only the basic set of applications.
Then test your mail and Finder, and if issues remain, go back to AppleCare and present them with the proof, that it is the hardware and not the software.
You may find, that it is not Aperture at all, that is causing the problem, but an incompatible plug-in, kernel extension, "helper" applications, duplicate fonts, problems in the Aperture library inherited from iPhoto, incompatible videos in the Aperture library, an unsuitable drive hosting your Aperture Library. Where is the library located, btw? On an external or internal drive?

I have edited my photos in aperture using the iphoto edge blur tool. On exporting they look more blurry that than they look in aperture why is that? Can I do anything to make my images look the same as when I see them in aperture.
Is there an Albums section in the left hand pane? If so move the cursor to the right of the Album name till Show appears and click on it?
If there is no left hand pane where the Event and Photos icons, albums, slideshows, etc. usually sit move the cursor over the left edge of the window until it turns into a a cross like this:
then click and drag to the right to open the pane.
If you can't get that to work Try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder (Snow Leopard and Earlier).
or with Lion and Mt. Lion from the User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto/
Data/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder
3 - launch iPhoto, reset its various preferences and try again. The left hand pane will be visible.
NOTE 1: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto. You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
NOTE 2: In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.

Using Aperture 3 on IMAC running OS 10.6.4. I created a slide show with music which plays fine on computer. My problem is exporting the slideshow. I use the pop-up menu "Export for" and tried many different formats. Also, the "save in ITunes" box check is not available.
The export dialog comes up but nothing is exported. What's going on?I'm replying to myself since nobody answered my question. I looked through other posts and found one which referenced the "excrutiatingly" slow speed of Aperture 3 Export. Keeping that in mind, I set the export and went about my daily tasks. Well, some 2 1/2 hours later with no other tasks being performed by the computer, the export of a 22 minute presentation of music is maybe 1/3 complete and I expect that it will take the better part of today for total export.

Aperture 3: multiple export hangs while generating thumbnails?
Sigh. I was almost ready to write a blog post claiming that while AP3 has its share of bugs, it's not the unusable mess some have painted it to be. This morning I'm no so sure anymore. I think this is stellar update with tons of potential. When it works it screams on my machine and the new features are amazing. But guys, i need the basics to work.
Here's what I've just sent t via the feedback form:
I've been trying to export 29 pictures in web format for the past 40 minutes. I've had to force-quit AP three times and restart my machine twice. Aperture starts exporting at a normal pace but then completely hangs on a "generating thumbnails" process. At this point it becomes impossible to either cancel the task or quit Aperture normally. It also kicks my iMac's fan into overdrive - something that NEVER happens.
This is not good.
Other problems:
- random crashes while using brushes.
- second display doesn't follow "blank" command and keeps reverting to "alternate" even when the menu says Blank.
This is a great version of Aperture with a lot of potential. These bugs are killing me though.
I've just rebuilt the database. If it's still not working I'm going to remove plugins and see if it helps.
Anyone else having problems with this?Absolutely has to be a bug. This isn't a setting or configuration problem. It might even be a Snow Leopard problem. I had the same problems with A2.1.4 on SL as I do with version A3.0.1. Export hangs seem to happen on images that came from my A2 library that was imported into A3 but originally adjusted in A2. These images were imported from scanned TIFF files. If the adjustment mechanism was flawed in prior Aperture versions then Apple needs to create and distribute a utility that converts these images into something that A3 can use.
I will have to revert to A2 running on Leopard until Apple can get this fixed. If I cannot export, there is no point in running the software. On this discussion thread, we are just trying to fly by flapping our arms. -
Aperture to Lightroom Export/Import question
For those who have done the Aperture - Lightroom move (for whatever reason), did you use the built-in Aperture to Lightroom importer that I understand is part of of LR5 or did you use a third-party exporter like Aperture Exporter?
What were your reasons for your choice? My Aperture library is around 68,000 photos, but only around 3,000 show up when I check as "adjusted", so my main concern is trying to maintain some semblance of my folder structure and things like keywords, ratings, etc.
Thanks. SteveI tried the plug-in (got a trial version of LR5) and after making sure that my entire Aperture Library was referenced, started it - and made sure to tell it to leave the files where they were! To my dismay (1) a lot of photos that I would have expected to be imported came back with errors - even though the ORF Olympus RAW file was a supported camera and more importantly (2) a lot of my photos that were in particular folders, now found themselves in folders based upon the date the photo was either taken or imported into Aperture. Now I read about this - but it is only supposed to happen if you had a managed library and then LR would move the image files into folders based upon dates.
My library had about 68,000 images and after about 6 hours it was up to 30% or so, so I just clicked on DONE to see how it was handling my folder structure.
I am now trying with an application called Aperture Exporter (they have a trial version, but it has limitations on how many photos it will import) and it seems to be handling the export much better. It is keeping my folder structure intact, keeping my metadata (mainly keywords) and any photo that had adjustments in Aperture applied it gives you the option of exporting the original RAW/JPEG file along with a copy of the adjusted one - either as a JPEG or TIFF. Only "issue" would be that you have to have enough hard drive space to duplicate - at least initially - your entire photo library. Don't see an issue to do the export one folder or project at a time (at least not in the demo version).
