Aperture 3.03 For me preview generation performance is now even slower!

Set up:
24" iMac, Intel Core 2 Duo 2.8Ghz, 4Gb RAM, Radeon HD2600 with 256Mb, 1Tb 7200 Seagate Barracuda HD.
Aperture 3.03, RAW 3.02
OSX 10.6.3
With a Canon 5D Mark II RAW photo (25Mb or so) with some simple adjustments generating a preview is now taking 1 minute per photo. Which is even slower than version 3.02.
I have the previews full size and on quality 8.
Does anyone with the 5D see faster performance on preview of this size, on this sort of Mac?
I want to try and find out if this is normal performance or not before going through all the things I tried in 3.02 which had no effect (clearing caches, rebuilding library, rebuilding thumbnails, de-fragging by copying library to another drive and back, deleting preference files).
I've also had the problem with 3.03 where faces get rotated 90 degrees, so not too impressed so far with this version.

Same here. Previews at 1680x1680 (the max rez of my 20" iMac screen), quality 8, and they take about 2 secs each on the iMac spec'd in my sig. Same on my MBPro, though those are constrained to 1440x max.
Are you talking about just generating a standard preview, or a 100% view render, or what?
I know (still even with 3.0.3) it takes a LONG time to render a 100% view of a photo if it has a bunch of adjustments on it (highlight/shadows + edge sharpen) are the worst for this)... But it does seem a bit faster doing this task now, than with 3.0.2...

  • Aperture Preview Generation Error

    Hi folks,
I've a couple of images and a movie that are queued up for preview generation, however when Aperture 3.4.3 reaches them it stops responding, I get the colour wheel, and my CPU goes into overdrive. I have to force quit Aperture.
I've been getting round this by simply holding shift to stop preview generation starting automatically when launching Aperture. But its not a solution, and I need to get it fixed.
I've removed the offending files from the Aperture Library manually and relocated them for now. Other applications seem to be able to view them without problem.
The problem is Aperture still thinks the images are present in the library (though marked as missing) and trys to generate preview still. I've tried to delete them through Aperture, but the moment I select them Aperture stops respondning again, and I have to force quit again.
I've repair the permissions for the Library, rebuilt/ repaired the database. but I still have the same problem.
My HDD has a clean bill of health, ran disk util to verify and fix permissions etc.
Any ideas how I get rid of these problem files?

I can open Aperture using the Shift key, everything works fine. Preview generation does not start. This is how I've been managing to use Aperture recently.
It's when I start normally, the previews start generating within 15 secs. Then Aperture freezes.
I've unticked Maintain Previews for both Projects (top level) and the projects that the problem images reside in.
When I tried to manually remove the images, I located them within the Previews, Thumbnails and Masters folder using Spotlight and moved them to my desktop. I made a note of where they came from and have replaced them.
However the issue I'm having remains unchanged, both before removing, after removing, and replacing them. As I understand it the thumbnails and previews are generated on request, and as such are temporary files anyway.
I've read articles mentioning deleting these folders entirely to resolve other issues, but I don't want a 15 hr preview marathon only to get stuck on the same images. Might be worth a shot if I can't find another solution though.
What I have realised though, is that these images are referenced from my old iPhoto Library before I jumped on board Aperture, wonder if I can delete from iPhoto instead of Aperture? I'll report back.

  • My 3.4.5 has ~ 35000 jpg masters.  I have set aperture not to create previews on import and have ensured "maintain previews" is not ticked.  Every time I start aperture it insists on creating previews for ~ 4300 images. Why?

Having had the previews created I selected all photos and "delete previews".  It did this quickly and no more previews being created.  Once aperture is closed and then re-opened aperture immediately sets about creating the previews for the same photos.  I don't understand why this should be happening.
This is occuring on my Mackbook Air (Aug 2012) which has 256 GB storage. I am fast running out of space as I am using "Managed Masters".  I intend to make the masters referenced by relocating them to an external HDD but before doing this would like to clear up this problem first. I keep my Vault on the external HDD and have Time Machine and Time Capsule.  When I have relocated the masters to the external HDD I intend that TM backs the external HDD to the TC.  I tink that I will use the second partition on the external HDD for Carbon Copy Cloner to back up the Mackbook Air.
Any help or advice warmly welcomed.

    Frank
    Many thanks for your input.
Following your advice I have selected all the projects individually and checked the status of Mantain Previews.  Some were indeed marked up for Mantail Preview so I have unmarked them.
I have also selected Photos and deleted  previews and also repeated this for My Projects.
Checking the Get Info for the Preview folder in Aperture Library in Finder this now tells me that I have zero bytes for 564 items.
Close and then reopen Aperture and it regenerates these564 previews in the blink of an eye.  I haven't been able to locate these photos yet.  I know there are about 120 in facebook and 10 in photostream but dont know where the rest are.
It seems the issue is not with Aperture but with myself and not understanding Aperture sufficiently well
Do you see the problem this way?

  • Turn Off Preview Generation

I am importing RAW files from my Canon Camera Card into Aperture. I am really happy with the way they look upon import.  Upon clicking on one the colors and hues are auto process and I lose the view I would like.
Is there anyway to turn of this auto generation of a new preview.  I see that there is a standard and camera preview setting but no option to turn off previews all together.
I am using the most recent version of Aperture on the MacOS   Thank you, Tim

Your confusing a few different things here. The issue you have is not with previews but with Aperture's RAW conversion.
When a Raw image is imported into Aperture, Aperture has to convert that into a viewable image. The Raw files is just sensor data from the camera it is up to the Raw processing software (be that Aperture or Lightroom or the Canon included software) to make it into something we can see.
Converting Raw sensor data into an image is part science, the numbers have certain fixed meanings and partly art, how the numbers are interpreted can vary making the final image appear different from different Raw converters.
The conversion takes some time. in order that you see something while it is taking place Aperture will give you the option of using the camera generated jpg image imbedded in the Raw file. In fact in the latest version of Aperture you can use this camera generated preview  up until you actually apply an adjustment to the image if you wish.
One other point to keep i mind is that when you are in Aperture you are normally using the full resolution version not a preview. You can test this out by deleting the previews and running Aperture nothing much changes.
Previews have to be there in a few instances, one is if the original file is not available for some reason Aperture will use the preview but you won't be able to make adjustments to the version or export it. The preview is also needed for sharing with other apps like mail and iTunes.
Hope this helps clear up some points

  • Aperture Vault saving different sized previews

    Hi all,
I am trying to back up my rather large (1.04TB) Aperture managed library to an external hard drive vault. Trouble is that when "generating previews" message came up at the bottom of Aperture the vault size started growing way bigger than the 1.04TB original library. It is currently at 1.56TB and growing slowly.
When I investigated the package content I found the masters folders where EXACTLY the same size so that is a good start but the Previews folder is 506.34GB in the vault versus 440KB in the library (see attached photo). Does anyone know why Aperture is doing this? What would be the best course of action to remedy it? Is there a setting in Aperture I am missing or does Aperture need a preview size to use else it reverts to half size previews? It seems that Aperture is saving half sized previews.. I have made sure that the preview generation was off and I even deleted all the previews before I did the back up. Bit perplexed....

I think I have found an answer to my question..
It looks like you have to force Aperture to regenerate all the previews after you change the setting even if you delete the old previews. I just assumed by deleting them that they were gone. It looks like Aperture looks at the current preview setting for each master so if , as I found out it started with the default "half size" option it will keep that option stored even if you change your preference and delete the old previews. Thus , when I created the back up it regenerated the old setting that was stored . ie. half sized previews..
Looking at it logically it makes sense as you can have some old sized previews and mix them up with a new size going forward. Makes it much more flexible in the long run..
This article explains it as well..

    Dear Anand,
Did you perform a complete service definition replacement for SDCC/SDCCN as described in the note?
These are manual steps you need to perform on the system and are not code corrections.
I would suggest you perform it, if you have not, and check the SDCCN logs to review the process ran cleanly.
Note: Please make sure SDCC_OSS is functioning and a connection to SAP can be made before
    deleting the service definitions.
If you have already replaced the service defintions on the Solution Manager system, then no point doing it again. However checking a note and applying it are not the same thing. So I am uncertain if you replaced the service definitions or not. The dump you are getting in SM:EXEC SERVICES suggests its due to a problem with the service definitons. The recommendation is to replace them according to the process described in SAP Note 727998. If you have not done so please do so.
If you have successfully replaced the service definitions are you still getting the same dump, or has it possibly changed?

    Paul

  • Is Aperture the tool for me?

    Afternoon all,
Following on from a separate forum thread I've got here in iPhoto https://discussions.apple.com/message/20902055?ac_cid=op123456#20902055?ac_cid=o p123456, I wondered whether the Aperture thread could also help me out.
I'm looking to have a single product to use as a central catalogue and referencing tool for the 000s of photos I've already got but also the 000s yet to be taken. I'm intending to have these photos stored on a NAS with appropriate backup measures, but accessing them through this as yet unknown product through wi-fi. I'm likely to do minimal photo manipulation other than the basics and enjoy the features of iPhoto so the main benefit is the ability to reference the images from a networked location. TD has kindly advised that iPhoto isnt the right product due to various limits due to networking.
My question is simple: Is Aperture the tool for me?
I look forward to hearing from you.
    Tim

If you read TD's answer carefully, it says
It cannot have the Library on a networked location, such as a NAS. iPhoto needs to have the Library sitting on disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Users with the Library sitting on disks otherwise formatted regularly report issues including, but not limited to, importing, saving edits and sharing the photos.
The main problem is the formatting of the drive - for Aperture holds the same: The library needs to be on a disk formatted MacOS X Extended. Otherwise you are risking inconsistencies in your Aperture library  and open a can of worms, see:
Use locally mounted Mac OS X Extended volumes for your Aperture library
If you absolutey want to store your Photolibrary on a NAS, you can create a writable diskimage formatted MacOS X extended on your NAS and store the library on this disk image. You will have to take care to automount the diskimage before you access Aperture. This will be tedious and slow.
The question, if you can put your Aperture library on a network volume is open to a debate, but I would not do it.
For a good performance the access to the Aperture library needs to be very fast - I'd put the library on the fastest drive you have, with a very fast port, Thunderbolt, for example. My library sits on a second internal drive.
Your network needs to be very stable, if you want reliable database transactions for your Aperture library.
    2. While you can run iPhoto in Referenced mode, with the Masters on a NAS and the library on a local disk, this is inherently unreliable. Here has more:
This is better in Aperture. Other than iPhoto Aperture has built-in tools to deal with referenced original files. So you can move the bulk of your image files to an external volume and keep only the Aperture library on your internal volume.

  • Xcelsius Engage 2008 - slow SWF preview/generation?

Hi Everyone - I am just curious - how long does it take your dashboards to load for a preview?
I am averaging about 2 minutes to get to the "Maximum rows message", then about another 1:30 to load the preview.  The processer is pegged at 100% with 1.2 GB in the page file on average during the whole time.  No other apps are running.
I think my company pc is ancient (specs below), but this just seems awful slow to me.  All data is static on the sheet- no DB ties, and I have less than 200 rows on the longest tab.  I converted all my nested IF statements & vloookups to index & match, but no noticeable performance boost.
    System Specs:
    Dell D600 Laptop
XP Pro SP3 (all updates installed)
    1.86 GhZ Pentium M
    2 GB Ram
    Flash Player 10.0.22.87
    Office 2003

Hi Brian - interesting to hear it's me.
I do not have anything over row 200 in any of the three tabs, but there are some index & match arrays that are vertical (region & country performance aggregated) that get close to 200.  For the default rows setting, I have used the default 512, reduced it to 200, and expanded it to 1,000 without any noticeable changes.
I think I probably have about 200 objects on the dash (mind you I am considering everything on the canvas an object for purposes of this conversation).  A good portion of them are linked labels.
I did neglect to mention that this was a 4.5 model that I imported, maybe that's where the problem lies.
I am going to hit the manuals & some of the webinars I have seen posted over the next few weeks to "re-learn" the program.
I see that a lot of published docs are asking users to create their input models completely from within the interface.  Again, I am importing a model built for 4.5, so maybe that is the issue.
Are most of you fellow users still updating sheets & importing them, or are you making the updates manually from inside Xcelsius?
Thank god I have a very understanding boss!

  • Incomplete Import & Preview Generation

Using Import, if the importation process is not completed by virtue of files already in catalog, incompatible PSD or too large - the process halts instead of moving on to generate the Previews proscribed in the Import dialog. This wastes the opportunity to conduct a large import and walk away from the computer. There should instead be an ability to override the "Import Incomplete" warning, record those warnings as in an Import Log, and move on with preview generation for those files that were successfully imported.

I've solved the problem by uploading the file again and
allowing it to overwrite the existing one. The preview now works as
    intended.

  • Aperture 2.1.4 - No preview or thumbnails after upgrading to Snow Leopard

I had upgraded to Aperture 2.1.4 before upgrading to Snow Leopard and everything worked fine. But since I installed SL, whenever I make a new version, I get no preview (just a big gray box) and no thumbnail (just a dotted lined box). So this makes Aperture absolutely useless to me. Apple says my service period has expired and I need to pay $199 to get any tech support to remedy this. I think that's ridiculous because I think this is a problem caused by SL.
Before I pay this stupid fee, does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this? I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling but nothings changed.
In the meantime, I've switched everything over to Lightroom. So Apple better get this resolved or its losing a good customer to Lightroom!
    Thanks... David

    Hey Tony...
    Thanks for the response.
I am using a Canon 5D Mark II and import RAW files. But I don't think it's a camera specific issue. Even is I import a plain old jpeg and make a new version of it, all I get is a outlined box for a thumbnail and a big gray box for a preview. And the little spinning "loading" wheel goes on forever.
I have gone to that support page and have done everything on it without success. I'm out of ideas.

  • Defer preview generation works.... but what now?

    Hi,
Every time I open Apeture 3 it starts 'processing' and I can only get out of it by forcing quit... with one exception...
If I defer preview generation then it opens and works ok. But I'm not sure what I should do to fix the issue now I've discovered this, I don't really want to be 'defering preview' every time I open Apeture.
    Any tips much appreciated.
    Thanks

Let the preview generation complete. On a large library this can take from hours to many hours. Once the preview generation is done this should't be an issue.
Either that or selectively  enable previews for just those images and/or projects you're interested in.

Updated to Adobe Muse 2014 this morning and have worked in it for the last 8 hours. Now when I try to publish the updated site to Business Catalyst for my client to preview it crashes everytime. I have tried just publishing altered files only, then tried the whole site again, and then tried publishing as a new site altogether. Thought I would then try to export as HTML in the hope of uploading the files via an FTP client and Muse crashes and locks up again. I am extremely stressed about this as I am in the last few days of of website I have been working on now with no issues since December. We are due to go live and my client needs to see it. I am desperate for an answer. It is not looking good. I am on an Apple Mac and have not had any isses publishing it for the last 6 months. Not very happy to say the least. Need desperate help.

Hi Zak, I got onto Adobe Customer Care Live Chat this morning and gave them the error message. After some trouble shooting with them it appears the older archived file of the site still publishes. I have now reverted back to the old file and copied and pasted out of the new file and from some ideas given to me by support I am now able to publish to Business Catalyst. It seems there was something corrupt within the new pages added yesterday. I have no idea if this would have still happened if I hadn't updated but I am glad it wasn't a Muse specific problem. I am loving using Muse and the support from Adobe has been excellent. Thanks everyone. By the way I do love the new version and apart from this hick up that lost me a few hours, aged me some more and gave me grey hair I really love Muse. Thanks again.
