Aperture 3.1.2 (on 10.6.7) - freezes up my system

The software is practically unusable.  Individual adjustments take well over 60 seconds to apply, it freezes up my system, and from time to time it crashes my entire system.  Anyone else have similar frustrations?  Anyone have any ideas on how I can fix this?

Aperture works well, so the problem is your setup. Please describe everything about your hardware so we can help you to troubleshoot.
Aperture is a heavy pro graphics app that is very demanding of hardware. Your Mac's CPU, GPU, i/o and RAM could all be limiting to Aperture so we need to do what we can to optimize.
Some generic advice I posted in another thread:
• Set Previews to only be built manually, and only tell Aperture to build Previews when you are not otherwise editing in Aperture.
• Keep the internal drive underfilled for speed, which sooner or later usually requires using a Referenced-Masters-Library with Masters on external drives. Back up originals before importing into Aperture or any other images app.
• The Aperture Library should be on an internal drive.
• Turn off Share Previews with iLife and iWork.
• Remember that HDs slow as they fill and keep the internal drive underfilled. Approx. 70% full maximum is a good guideline.
• If page outs increase significantly during operation try to run Aperture by itself. On my C2D MBP with its max of 3 GB RAM I always did a restart prior to a heavy Aperture session to clear any memory leaks and make sure no other apps were open. Browsers in particular will often suck RAM Aperture would otherwise be using.
IMO all Aperture users who can should routinely bump RAM to at least 8 GB.
• Some users have observed that it can take a new Aperture installation time (weeks) to stabilize. So do not panic; and allow Aperture to continue background work by not fully shutting down the computer. Personally I never fully shut down Macs except during electrical storms.

  • How do I get custom book themes to appear in Aperture?

I want to create two custom book themes in Aperture - A4 Landscape and A4 Portrait - so that I can print them on A4 photo paper. However, after creating the custom themes, they do not appear in the custom theme list which is preventing me from creating an A4 sized book. I closed and restarted Aperture and I have also closed and restarted my MacBook.
My Aperture version is 3.5.1 and I am running Mac OS X 10.9.1.
Folders for the two custom themes I have created do appear in Users/MacPro/Library/Application Support/Aperture/Book Themes.
    Regards
    Schof

Folders for the two custom themes I have created do appear in Users/MacPro/Library/Application Support/Aperture/Book Themes.
    Schof,
I will try your suggestion of creating a new Aperture library and let you know what happens.
If a new library does not fix it,  there is probably a permissions problem with your user library, or a problem with the "Books Theme" folder.
I'd try to trash the "Books Theme" folder:
    Quit Aperture.
    Delete your "Users/MacPro/Library/Application Support/Aperture/Book Themes".
    Log off and on again.
    Create a new Custom Book.
Can you now see it in the "Themes" drop-down menu?
If that does not help, trash the preferences as well:
    Users/MacPro/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Aperture.plist
and log off and on again, or restart the system.

  • How do I reinstall an older version of Aperture from the App Store?

    Hello,
I have an older Macbook - 13 inch early 2008. It is still running fine on 10.7.5 Lion, but can't update to a later version of OS X, as it is not compatible. I have Aperture 3.4.5, which I purchased from the App Store.
Following a hard disk problem, I've reinstalled the laptop, used software update to get all the latest patches, and have recovered my files and applications from my Time Machine Backup. Unfortunately, Aperture is no longer able to open files from my Sony Nex camera ("Unsupported Image Format" message") even though it worked before I rebuilt my Mac, and is listed as supported under Aperture 3.4.5. I've done all of the "Repair permissions", "repair database" and "Rebuild Database" things, but it hasn't helped.
I've tried to fix this by removing Aperture (in case my Time Machine backup version is in some way corrupted) and reinstalled from the App Store, but the App Store won't let me have Aperture anymore, even though I've paid for it, because my system is no longer compatible with the current version, 3.5. I can't see a way of downloading a full copy of the older version compatible with my system. I can see updates for Aperture listed at http://support.apple.com/downloads/#aperture, including Aperture 3.4.5, but these require a copy of Aperture 3.0 or later already installed to update, and even if I run the 3.4.5 update, it tells me it won't work because my copy of Aperture is from the App store.
Can anyone help me find a way of navigating the App Store or Apple web site to get the copy of Aperture 3.4.5 I have licensed from Apple?
    Many thanks.

    @léonie
Thanks for your help with this. I've downloaded the latest RAW support updates supported on my machine - V4.09 that seems to contain all of the RAW formats for previous updated including V4.06, which includes the NEX 3N, my camera. After a short while (there seemed to be some sort of background processing ging on in Aperture) it started to allow my NEX 3N photos to be viewed. Some of the thumbnails were corrupted, but if I made a slight edit in each of these files, the thumbnails updated and all was well.
Prior to this, I raised a call with Apple, because the inability to reinstall software from the App Store that I've purchased from in App Store to a machine that supports OSX 10.7.5 and no later strikes me as a problem. I need to know that if my Time Machine backup fails and I need to reinstall, I've got somewhere I can go.
The support people at Apple were very helpful, and it feels like they recognise this as a problem, and are working to resolve it behind the scenes. The App Store will not allow me to download the last version that works on my machine at the moment, but it sounds like Apple is thinking about how to do this. In the meantime, they are shipping me a copy of Aperture 3.0 on CD, and sending me a registration code. This will solve my immediate problem.
This does make me wary about using the App Store for purchases in the future. I don't upgrade my hardware that frequently - I have no real need to as it just keeps working - and so not having physical copies of installation media for when the applications stop supporting my OS is a worry. On the face of it, maintaining prior versions of the software for older machines to download from the App Store seems like a reasonable solution, but they are not there yet, and there is no real commitment for them to do this. Anyone who doesn't back up their Apps in Time Machine (probably the majority of users) could loose them altogether when Apple moves on, and cuts app support for older OS versions.
Thanks to @léonie and @Frank Cagianno for your help.

  • Moving aperture masters to external hard drive and changing to reference

I am using my iMac's internal drive to store manage my aperture masters and versions. I'm now up to 200 GB and aperture at times is running very slow . I believe i have to move my masters to an external harddrive but i'm not sure how and then once I do how do I convert to using reference files? ? In this configuration will using the vault feature stop backing up my masters if they are separated?

Thank you for your help. One question if I down load my masters directly to the external harddrive as you suggest and then import into Aperture as referenced files won't that mess up the hierarchy system that Aperture sets up. When I relocated all my masters to the external HD Aperture automatically set them up as specific folders corresponding to all of my projects in a well organized hierarchy if I haphazardly download first to the Hard drive and then import will this then be messed up? ie will I need to specifically organize how I do my original masters download to the Ext HD from my compact flash?

  • HT4007 Already have Aperture 3 license, how do I install it on another Mac without rebuying it from App store?

Already have Aperture 3 license, how do I install it on another Mac without rebuying it from App store?

As you can see from all the replies to your question if you are not clear in describing the situation it is very difficult to try and help you.
So first how did you originally purchase Aperture? App Store, DVD or Unlocked Trial version.
If you purchased it from the App store if you log into the App Store with the same Apple ID you used to purchase Aperture then you will be able to install it on other systems besides the one you originally installed it on. Even though the button says Purchase you will not be charged again as lolongnd as this is the same Apple ID you used the first time.
If you installed from DVD or Trail unlock post back.

  • Can't use Aperture in Mac OS 10.9

I have installed Mac OS 10.9(not upgrade) in my Mac Book Air(2011) and then install Aperture 3.0.2 (Box Set)
But it can't use and the Mac OS said "You can't use this Aperture(3.0.2) in this Mac OS"
and I can't update it at AppStore! ***
I have joined Apple Care and they suggest to buy it again at App Store! ***!
I spend $200 to buy this software and get nothing now! I bought it and 2 weeks later the appstore luanch!
    And I got nothing now!
    <Edited by Host>

    d I can't update it at AppStore!
The App Store should be able to update your boxed Aperture 3 version. But first you will have to upgrade it to version compatible with your system. Aperture 3.0.2 is a version released for MacOS X 10.5.
First of all, check, it Aperture has been installed in applications and not a subfolder of Applications. It should be installed directly in "Applications" and named simply Aperture.
Then go to the Support  > Software Update page and download an updater. Try to update at least to Aperture 3.2.4, the last version compatible with snow leopard.
The updaters for Aperture are here:  http://support.apple.com/downloads/#aperture%203
Once you have a version that can be launched on your system, enter your registration number and use "Software update" from the apple menu to upgrade to the latest version or download Aperture 3.4.5 from the support page. Aperture 3.4.5
What are your language and region settings? some posters here reported, that the Aperture updater from the AppStore will only work, if the primary system language is set to english. (System Preferences > language& Region).  Reboot, before trying to update from the App Store, after changing the language.

  • How do I import Adobe Photoshop Album Library in to Aperture?

I was wondering if any members out there have had experience trying to migrate an Adobe Photoshop Album library in to Aperture. Getting the images in won't be a problem it is keeping the tagging data I am concerned about.
Ideally I would like to keep the 1000's of tags I have set up over the past few years for re-use in Aperture. There is no way I could retrospectively retag all the images again.
I was thinking that it may be possible to somehow attach the tags to a metadata field in each image prior to export and that Aperture could then use these to build its own keyword tagging system. I don't know how I would do this!!
    Any ideas?
    Thanks, Andrew
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Upgrade to Photoshop Elements and in the File menu you can apply the tags to the images using ITPC. You can then import the images into Aperture with the tags in place.

  • Why is the Raw processing so noisy and lousy in Aperture 3.3 vs LR4

I have been using LR4  to process my photos due to its image quality and its functions .
However I have always liked aperture for its file managmenet. when the 3.3 is out I thought
this could be me the game changer, ( I am shooting with 5D3)
However over the weekend I have found out that doing a side by side comparision the Aperture's Raw (CR2) processing
is simply not acceptable. it is lack of sharpenss and high noise is nothing but a joke if you compare to the LR4.
I hope it is some setting that I am doing wrong so I went to the apple store, and ther" Creative" guys was not able to solve
the issues as well, so now I am back to square one. I have to use LR4 to process my photos and APERTURE to store them...
    Any one has better ideas?
The difference was to me day & night, it is not subtle ,,,
I hope someone can help me with my aperture issue so I can go back to using just one system.

What ISO are you shooting with?
Lightroom's noise reduction is better than Aperture's on noisy images right now.  Lightroom's controls can easily knock down luminance and chroma noise, while Aperture's tools are fairly limited.  You can use 3rd party plugins (Nik Dfine, Noise Ninja, etc.) that will do a good job but that renders a TIFF file which I'm not overly fond of for just this purpose.
But, still, the 5D Mark III has awfully good noise performance.  Are you shooting at ISO 12800 or higher all the time?  Is the noise frequently visible in all of your shots when you're not pixel peeping?
I ask because, while Lightroom is certainly better w.r.t. noise reduction than Aperture at the moment, I don't have all that many of my shots that really, really need noise reduction.

  • Crop Settings to make iPhone 4 wallpaper in Aperture 3

Sorry if this has already been asked but I can't seem to find the answer anywhere. I have just moved from iPhoto to Aperture and am still learning the basics. What is the best way to crop a picture for iPhone 4 sized wallpaper? And what about for a 13" MacBook Pro. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. In iPhoto there are quick settings for display size crop and iPhone crop but I'm not picking up on what to do in Aperture. Thanks!

Welcome to Aperture and the list.
If the MacBook Pro is the system Aperture is running on then just select *Main Display Aspect Ratio* in the crop tool and you will get the correct dimensions for it.
Not familiar with the aspect ratio of the iPhone but once you figure it out if those dimensions aren't listed you can go custom and enter the values in the crop tool.

  • Aperture 2.1 (Trial), NEF, 14 bit

disclaimer: I'm new to digital photo stuff...
question: As of 8 May 2008, does Aperture 2.1 support NEF files that are 14 bit?
My files are coming from the Nikon Coolscan V ED.
Aperture 2.1 can open 14 bit TIFF file coming from the Coolscan,
but the 14 bit NEF files results in an unsupported format message in Aperture.
(even though the thumbnail can be seen)
    Is it my system?
Is it the 14 bit NEF file?
    Is it Aperture?
    Please help

Here's a note on Vuescan's RAW files from Ed Hamrick, claiming they are just "normal TIFF files with 3 bits per pixel:"
    http://www.openraw.org/node/1546
There are a number of discussions on the Coolscan RAW format as well... all saying it's a TIFF wrapped in a Nikon "RAW" wrapper. I haven't really felt like digging into it... I just scan as TIFF and it works great. Frankly, I use Vuescan as I've found Nikon Scan to be rather flaky, and it hasn't been updated in like 4 years so it's not an Intel-native application. Vuescan is well supported by Ed Hamrick.
As far as RAW files and the demosaic process of converting the RAW data into RGB values... there are tomes written on it. It's a deep subject, beyond the scope of this post

  • Can't install Aperture 3 from DVD on 10.8.3

I just picked up a new iMac, installed 10.8.3 (updated from 10.8.2 which is what it shipped with) and then popped in a DVD w/Aperture 3.  When opening it said it had to reopen the installer (which is weird), and now when I select a destination disk the HD has a warning symbol with the message "Aperture can't be installed on this disk.  The contents of this disk can't be changed."
    What's going on?

On which drive are you trying to install Aperture? Your system drive or an external drive?
Aperture needs to be installed in the "Applications" folder on your system drive for updates to work. Are you running the installer using an administrator account? Otherwise you may not have the necessary permissions to install Aperture.

  • Aperture Library corrupted

I have my 2007-08 Aperture Library on a external drive (2nd gen DROBO) with essentially all of my pictures as referenced files. A couple of days ago, I got a warning that said there was an inconsistency in the library and that I should do a consistency check. I did that, and after about 2 hours of VACUUM everything seemed to come back and was working fine. Yesterday, after exporting 600 images in three file formats to the Drobo, I got another inconsistency warning. I have started aperture with the command-option key down again and it still running VACUUM. Using Activity Monitor, Aperture seems to be doing something with Mach Messages Out, Mach System Calls, and Context Switches changing..going up.
QUESTION: Is Aperture hung and not really do anything or is it still working away at a very nasty database corruption?
If I get my database back, I will move it off the Drobo as I suspect (no proof) that there is something strange going on between their RAID structure and the continual updating of Aperture Library.

OK...this is a remarkable story and I post it in case anyone else does a search on VACUUM, the software that seems to run when one does a consistency check.
So I let the consistency check run overnight (CPU time was 13 hrs in Activity Monitor, but total elapsed time was about 24 hours. It was still running this morning so I decided to do a forced quit. Opened the Library on the Drobo drive and much to my amazement, it opened without difficulty and all the pictures were visible and it seemed fine.
Having been spooked about what was happening to the AP Library (size 60 GB) on the Drobo when I exported files, under the Finder did a drag and drop of the Library over to my internal drive. Opened the Library on my internal drive and it successfully found all of my referenced pictures on the Drobo and seemed to function fine. Checked several of the projects and the few seemed ok.
Have now done a SuperDuper backup of my internal drive to an external FW drive (part of the routine)
Don't know whether the next time I do a large export to the Drobo whether I will have problems again with the Library, but I will provide an update to these notes in the future.

  • Issue with Aperture full screen mode on HD 5870

I have a very strange problem with Aperture, which may be linked to the HD 5870 and it's probably faulty drivers and would be very grateful if somebody with the same hardware could try this out if he/she can replicate this behavior:
I have a brand new 6-core with the 5870 optional card using a dual display setup (ACD 23" and NEC PA241W).
Whenever I enter full screen mode and activate the brushes, the image on the full screen monitor is reduced in size to about 70% of the full screen resolution. This also gets triggered, when I use the HUD display ("H" key) and lock the floating window on the browser display.
It's a bit hard to describe, but anybody with the same or similar setup, please try this:
    - enter full screen mode in Aperture by hitting "F"
    - press "H" and lock the window using the small slider in the upper right corner
    - activate any of the quick brushes, like dodge or burn
Is your image, which is displayed full screen on the main monitor, getting smaller in size or is it starting to flicker a bit, getting darker? If yes, we have a universal bug here.
I could narrow the problem down in a sense, that it does not matter if either screen is hooked up using the DVI or the Mini-Display-Port. It also happens when I switch the main screen over to the other, so it's (fortunately) not a problem of my new NEC display, the ACD shows the same behavior.
My best guess right now is some kind of bug in Aperture combined with a faulty driver of the HD 5870.
Any help here is greatly appreciated.

People have said that Aperture library benefits from, and should not be, on the boot drive, and placing on SSD or alternate drive, maybe RAID 0 in some cases.
64-bit kernel mode helps overcome some of the limitations and obstacles when working with large data sets, which is why I always kept data off the system and placed on RAID 0 which does improve system responsiveness.
If you have already done that and taken steps to optimize your storage layout hard to imagine it is a graphic driver.
And I would limit removing caches to just Aperture's own, though can't hurt to clean out the system's, that is something that SuperDuper will do if you use it, as it doesn't copy those and just skips caches and temp files best rebuilt (but does not touch user caches).
And a touch of Disk Warrior just for good preventative maintenance measure of course.

I don't know what this means- it might as well be a foreign language to me!!! I need the program to work and I can't return it now as the package has been opened and the return period has passed!!
I'm not a programmer, I sent the error to Apple but, that doesn't help me now. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

You need to upgrade your Aperture to 1.5.6 to run with leopard.

  • Aperture 2 Unsupported image - so what next?

As others have reported, some but not all of my images are suddenly showing up as 'unsupported' even though the previews are fine.
So I followed advice and after backing up did a rebuild of the library. Aperture sorted the problem out by simply deleting the images it didn't like.  Next I tried going back to an earlier set of images but Aperture didn't like that either. It seems to me that the software has been updated and no longer likes some of my photos (all are JPEGs from the same camera).  I can still get to the files, as JPEGs by going into the Aperture library but obviously can't edit or organise them.
So what do I do now?  Is there a quick way I can get to the JPEGs which are still buried in Aperture directories without painstakingly going into each subdirectory and what should I use to edit them?   I was thinking of finally getting round to upgrading to Aperture 3 but is it worth it? Am I going to get stuck with similar problems moving forward?

Usually the originals should have been collected in a special project "Recovered ...." after rebuilding the library. Has that not been the case? Look, if there has been such an album added to the library.

Aperture 3 has many improved features, and the latest version3.2.4, that is compatible with Mac OS X (10.6.8), is very stable. But if it will solve your "Incompatible images" problem, is hard to say, as long as we do not know the reason, why this happened. Try to solve the problem, while still running Aperture 2. If it happened because of hardware trouble or system trouble, upgrading Aperture will not help.
I cannot help with trouble shooting Aperture 2  - I did not use it long enough, but see this Guide:
    Aperture 2: Troubleshooting Basics: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2945
When upgrading from Aperture 2 to Aperture 3, it is important that the Aperture library does not have any glitches, otherwise Aperture may have problems when converting the Aperture library to the new format.
So all rebuilds and repairs should have been completed successfully, before upgrading.
This is recommended by Apple in the Aperture release notes, see: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2518 (scroll down to the bottom of the page - A note on Upgrading).
