Aperture 3.1.2 on 10.6.7 mangles TIFF masters after adjust date/time

Bumping the following thread that's now a year old:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=11799201
Adjusting date/time in Aperture 3.1.2, ticking the "also change master file" option now causes Aperture to display a "unsupported image format" box, also indicating that the pixel size is 900x600.
I'm at a loss, any ideas?

Matt,
Welcome to the user-supported Aperture discussion group.
Does this happens with all TIFFs? Do your TIFFs happen to be from a scanner? If so you may be interested in [this topic|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=12924902&#12924902].

  • Aperture 3.2: renaming based on date/time doesn't work properly

While importing I rename my photos based on the date/time they were taken.
In Aperture 3.1.3 this worked perfectly fine; for photos taken within the same second Aperture added an index number for the second, third etc. photo automatically.
In Aperture 3.2 this doesn't work any longer; Aperture simply doesn't import photo number 2, 3 etc. of that particular one second.
Note: I store the original files outside the aperture library, all run under snow leopard on an iMac i7. And as I said this worked fine under 3.1.
    Does anyone have an idea?

    Thanks all for the response
Leonie, here are the details of what I do/experience:
    a) Aperture message after import
    b) I import pairs and rename them as follows “IMG_{Image Date}_{Image_Time}” (I know all the disadvantages of this but old habits are hard to break… and for me it still works fine)
    c) Difference of the images that are imported / not imported is solely the hundredth of the second when they were taken. Of my test series only the first image has been imported:
    DSC_4903.jpg(2011/10/19 22:49:50.08)
    DSC_4904.jpg(2011/10/19 22:49:50.25)
    DSC_4905.jpg(2011/10/19 22:49:50.43)
    DSC_4906.jpg(2011/10/19 22:49:50.60)
    DSC_4907.jpg(2011/10/19 22:49:50.80)
    d) I import via the import panel: Import in new project – storefiles in particular folder (not Aperture library) – subfolder ‘imageyear/month” – rename as described above – import both
Doug, after some trial and error I agree with your thoughts, Aperture apparently simply lost its automatic indexes ‘-1’, ‘-2’ etc. and – what is good - doesn’t overwrite the first with the second and the third image... As you suggest there are different options to make the images unique. Most simple would be to add {index #} or {sequence #} or {counter}, all would do and I probably will choose one of them. Or I will downgrade back to 3.1.3 (do have backups) and wait until Apple fixes this.
Kirby, turnoff “Don’t import duplicates” was a good idea but didn’t solve it. But your naming convention actually ensures the uniqueness of the files.

  • Aperture crashes on start up - after migrating from time machine

Aperture has been running fine for ages, but at the suggestion of the apple store ,to assess a problem with the isight, I did a clean install of OSX leopard and migrated all the data from the time machine. Now Aperture will not open at all and Final cut express wants its serial number again.
I am not impressed! Anyone got a simple solution?

  • Can't open aperture 3,  warning box comes up," warning there was an error opening the data base for the library /pictures/aperture library .aplibrary  Whats up?

I have had Aperture 3 loaded on my computer for a while now. Never had any problems till tonight. Restarted my computer and went to open Aperture and a "warning" box poped up, There was an error opening the data base for the library /picture/aperture library ap library.   Then a "quit" button.
What is going on and how can I open my aperture. I have pictures that need worked for clients.  Help!

Have you run through the steps in Aperture 3: Troubleshooting Basics. If not that's always a good place to start.
If that doesn;t resolve the problem when you post back describe your hardware and software setup.

  • Aperture 3.0.3 Adjust Date and Time

Working on a batch (~3K) scanned images that all need to be adjusted for date and time, the adjustments and so forth. All notes below is with Master images.
My observations so far with the unpredictable "Adjust Date and Time" function, "D&T" hereafter and some suggestions on improving Aperture.
    0. Always make sure that you start by "edit->deselect all" - even if nothing is selected.
APPLE: PLEASE MAKE IT SIMPLER TO SEE WHAT IS SELECTED (MASTERS, VERSIONS, etc).
    1. Always use US language selection - Language selection seems to matter for D&T. I am from Denmark, living in US but often switch between US and DK language (to get some special characters). In Denmark we use dd-mmm-yyyy and in use we use mmm-dd-yyyy. When i use the danish locale with the "D&T" function Aperture D&T is totally unpredictable - so stick with US.
APPLE: PLEASE DONT BE TOO SMART BUT USE THE D&T FORMAT LISTED IN THE D&T DIALOG BOX
    2. D&T time-shift does not work. Unfortunately this 'capability' cannot be disabled - Somehow Aperture check what the time was originally stamped on the image and use this for the new "D&T" - first i though that this was adjusting ~1 sec between images but it seems that Aperture do something like the following (sorry for my non-applescript'ish examples below)
newTime = "edit->adjust date and time"
    foreach image do
    set time to image.D&T.time
    try() change image.D&T.time newTime+image.D&T.time
    catch () newTime image.D&T.time
Not good as it time-shift from the original picture - if the time is good this is not a problem but if time (from the stamp) is off (like all of mine) most likely the time will get the date to wrap into the next day (or year if you got a bunch of images)..
APPLE: PLEASE ADD AN OPTION TO DISABLE TIME-SHIFT in D&T
    3. Dont include DNG - Aperture cannot change the date for a dng and it seems to screw up the time-shift in "D&T" - i think the algorithm do something like
    newD&T = "edit->adjust date and time"
    for each image do
    set D&T to image.D&T
    try() change image.D&T to newD&T
    catch() newD&T = image.D&T
The problem seems to be that when Aperture work on a image it cannot change it use this images (that it cannot change) D&T for the next images D&T, i got a bunch (a ton actually) of examples
    1994
    1994
    2008.dng
    2008
When using a different language locale it gets even worse.
APPLE: PLEASE DO NOT CHANGE THE D&T COUNTERS WHEN WORKING ON A FORMAT NOT (WELL) SUPPORTED.
    4. Always check your trash for images - after i deleted projects (empty, no images) i have found images for those projects in the trash. Cannot explain why this is but i am happy that i checked the trash before emptying - put back works just fine.
I am currently using the following methodology for my scans.
    1. load in all pics, create albums for years and projects for months - e.g. 1993.0201 <text>, 1998.0327 <text> and sort scans to the correct albums and projects
    2. export each album as separate libraries, open library, fix D&Ts, places and faces. Exit, reopen and check trash for images that should not have been deleted. Clean trash, close.
    - For faces i add a few pics' of recognizable folks - open faces and select from the many suggestions aperture offers - very fast.
    3. Open or import library to master (my master got ~20K pics currently)
I am interested in learning if i am the 'only one' with Aperture D&T 'problems' or if i am using the tool incorrectly.

    nathan:
What type of edit were you making. Have been trying to duplicate that and cannot. I've changed the date and selected the original file to be changed also. Then I edited the file by cropping, changing the exposure and shadows and saving. Both versions are still tiff files.
Now these are tiff files that I converted over from jpgs with Photoshop as my camera doesn't take tiffs. Don't know if that will make any difference.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • My aperture program keeps freezing up and my computer battery died but after plugging in and restarting now aperture won't open at all

Why wont my aperture open ???? Working on a clients project and need it ASAP. pLEASE HELP!!!!

If you need to reboot after updating then this usually means that files were in use and couldn't be updated.<br />
A possible candidate is in such cases is security software.
Boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to see if that helps.
You can also try to login as Administrator or possibly run Firefox once as Administrator via the right-click context menu.

  • Why can't I create a new version of a photo edited in an external application, without Aperture making a new copy of the newly created Tiff?

When Aperture creates a new version from a RAW file, no new master file is created.  This makes total sense and I understand why.
When I edit a photo in an external editor (Photoshop CS6) from within Aperture, Aperture creates a Tiff file to edit in Photoshop and saves it along with the RAW original once I have finished editing it in Photoshop.  I understand why this is necessary too.  So far so good.
But if I then ask Aperture to create a new version from the newly created image edited via Photoshop, it creates another new Tiff.  I can't see why this is necessary.  Aperture should be able to apply further new Aperture edits to the newly created Tiff in the same way that it creates new versions from a RAW file without duplicating the master - by remembering any new 'recipe' changes applied to the Tiff.  It only needs to remember the edits made as the Tiff already now exists.
Can I stop it creating repeat Tiff files each time I create a new version from the Photoshoped photos?
    Thanks in anticipation.

    Hello Kirby,
I clicked on the 'Show in Finder' and it revealed a new file called IMG_0961 (1) which goes with the original IMG_0961.CR2 and the edited new tiff created for Photoshop which was called IMG_0961.tiff
I noticed also that a separate version I had previously created using Canon's DPP stand alone software and titled by me IMG_0961 (DPP).TIF (same thing but from a different original) does not form a new master file when I create a new version of that one.  I've tried this with a few images but when the original is edited in Photoshop via Aperture a second version of the Tiff is created for the 1st version of the image when I create a new version fo it.

  • Installed Aperture 3 using existing iPhoto 11 library.  Did relocate masters to location outside of library and a handful remained in iPhoto masters folder.

    Hello,
I have a large iPhoto library and realized I was doing more with the tool that it was made to do.  Bought Aperture and was deligihted to find that I could relocate the masters outside of the library in a folder structure that made sense to me.  The masters are now in a folder structure that is organized by year/month so I can use it in other aps and/or back it up to the cloud.
After relocating the masters, I went back into the iPhoto libarary masters folder and saw that there were a handful (150 out of a 7K+ library) still there.  Some of them I do see within Aperature and some not.  What are these that got left over in the iPhoto Masters folder?  Are they ones that have been edited in iPhoto so the original got moved to the new location and these haven't?  I could see not pattern in them.  Some I know have never been edited, some have had a name change, some were deleted, etc.  There does not appear to be a reason.  Potential important info: the relocating masters function failed a couple times and restarting it got through the whole library.  Could these have just been random ones that Aperture choked on at the time?  If so, how do I get them into the referenced masters folder & out of these orphaned folders?
    Thanks in advance!

Like Aperture the 'edits' are in the database. These apps work as follows:
    Import an original
Edit it. Your decisions are stored as text commands in the SQL database. When you view the file it's essentially the original with your 'edits' overlaid on it. There is no edited file without exporting - that's what lossless processing is all about.
    This User Tip
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4921
has details of the options in the Export dialogue.
The Aperture export dilaogue has even more options.
To dave you the bother of always having to export iPhoto automatically generates Previews. (In Aperture you can choose to generate them or not). What's a Preview? It's a sort of 'good-enough-for-most-things version of the shot, medium quality, medium size but missing lots of metadata - designed for use in scenarios like email, uploading and using in Word Processing.
Is your plan to back up the Library to the Cloud?

  • Aperture 3.2.1 still issues with sorting images in albums, after making adjustments, cannot use arrow keys to go to next image. straightening tool auto turns image prior to straightening inconsistantly

Have updated aperture to 3.2.1, still having some issues during editing images.
    1. Basic item is sorting images does not happen correctly, move some images in file, they don't move correctly, after trying to move several, then they almost randomly move around.
    2. Straightening tool will automatically tilt images as soon as you touch the tool, turns them on about a 30 degree angle clockwise.
    3. Arrows on right side of keyboard used to move images in browser from the editing position, they move them if no editing is done, once you edit an image, cannot move to the next image using the arrow keys.

Oh, baby! This bad boy flies!! Here's what to expect:
I had 40,000 images in Aperture 3 and it was dog slow at everything. I installed 3.1 update today. It took 5 minutes to update the database and then behaved marginally better than before at ASIC library navigation. I was disappointed.
Then I QUIT the app. It took a couple of hours to "update files for sharing" with a counter that went to 110,000 images. So it must have updated every thumbnail and variation of preview. Turned it back on , and BAM. Came up fully in seconds. Paused for 10 seconds ten everything was lickrty split. For the first time ever, I can use the Projects view with all 791 projects and scroll quickly. I even put it in photos modevand whipped thru all 49,000 images!
Haven't done anybprocessing yet, but i'm liking it!!

  • Aperture Lost Masters after Time Machine restore

    Hello, everybody.
I have such problem. I experience some problems with mouse freeze after 10.6.3 update and tried to solve this problem by restoring my backup copy of system from Time Machine. I restored full hdd. All working ok, but Aperture lost links to Masters. I did not save pictures in Aperture library all of them imported to library as linked to original files (save in current location). I see files using Finder, I could find each file through check reference files in Aperture. But it almost impossible to do it for each file in Aperture Library (more than 20000+ files) manually. How i could fix this problem? OS 10.6.5, Aperture 3.1.1

If I'm reading your post correctly these are *referenced masters*, correct? And Aperture has lost the connection to them but you still can see them on the drive. Now you want to reconnect them.
    # Select all the images in Aperture that Aperture has lost its link to. You can use a *Smart Album* to so this. In the *Smart Album* select *Add Rule* then in the rule select missing. This will give you an album of all missing files. Select them all.
    # Goto *File->Locate Referenced Files*. All the missing files will be listed. You can reconnect them from here. It can be a bit tricky so it would be best if you read the section on this in the Aperture Users manual.
    Good luck

  • Plugin to import Aperture librairies does not release the memory used by the librairy after the import is completed

Let suppose I import a 30GB Aperture Library into LR which is on my HD. After the importation, if I send the imported library to the Trash and clear the Trash the disk space is not released by LR. So after a few importations I get the message that I do not have enough space on my HD to copy another library on the HD from an external drive which contains many Aperture libraries.

Casita17,  I recommend you evaluate ssprengel's questions and advice.  Please read the following below, as we don't want you to lose images!  I fear that you may be using a "referenced" library in Aperture, and this is the reason your disk space is not being released.  I would NOT RECOMMEND breaking your library into pieces for now.   You may very likely lose critical linkages, especially in albums.  If you have a number of Aperture libraries to begin with, then never mind.  Just be aware, Lightroom users generally recommend using only one lightroom catalog, which it sounds like you're doing.
Lets forget your system drive for now.  Do you have two times the disk space on your photos drive?  If not, do you have another drive laying around with as much space?  I recommend you make a backup before you continue.
I'm not quite sure what approach your are using, but I think the root cause of your dilemma exists because of how Aperture and Lightroom manage and store your images.  It may help to post what actions you take, step by step, and include the error messages.
You may already know some of these concepts, but lets leave no stone unturned.
First, Aperture uses "libraries", which contain all metadata and previews.  These images may be stored within the database (managed images), outside the database (referenced images), or a combination.  Can you apply a filter to your all photos selection, and tell us how many managed and references images you have?
Please read this for a better explanation:
    http://www.lifeafterphotoshop.com/managed-vs-referenced-files-in-aperture/
Second, Lightroom's catalog is like an Aperture library.  Only ALL images are stored externally, "referenced" in Aperture parlance.
You should be able to create the Lightroom Catalog on any drive.  However, where you eventually store your images depends on what options you choose in the plugin when importing these images.
Any "managed" photos in Aperture WILL BE copied to the location you specify in the plugin.  Any "referenced" files MAY OR MAY NOT BE copied to the location.  They may be copied, or they they may remain in place, depending what options you select in the plugin.
Not sure I follow where you have your aperture library, images, and where you eventually want to store your Lightroom catalog, and where you want to store your lightroom images.  I'd suggest not breaking up your Aperture library.
If you are short on disk space, I suggest making a backup.  Then, select all photos and change them from managed to referenced, which will relocate the photos from within the library, to outside the library, preferably on the same drive.  Then, create a Lightroom catalog, wherever you have room.
Run the plugin and choose the option NOT to copy the files.  This way, it will leave them in place on your photo drive.  Some images may be copied to the lightroom masters destination any way, so you may want to choose another location on your photo drive in the plugin import options anyway.
When the migration finishes, you can delete the Aperture library, which will not remove all that much, and will not make much more space available.  And do NOT delete the image location you designated in Aperture, because you'll now be using it for Lightroom.  But this way, you'll be able to keep your space usage under control.
But KEEP your backup, even after the migration, JUST IN CASE!

  • TS2518 license number has to be reentered every time I open Aperture after having data transfer done by Apple store to a new macbook pro. How do I get the license number saved?

I have to re-enter my Aperture license number and upgrade number every time I open Aperture after buying a new MacBook Pro and paying for the data transfer to be done at the Apple store. I can understand having to do this the first time but not every time. How can I get the license number saved?

Aperture 3.4.3 update specifically claims to fix the serial number problem. See the Release notes.
If you've already done the update and still have the problem, read this forum post about the same topic and a solution.

  • Filename and sequencing of print orders?

I ordered a set of prints through Aperture.  Before printing, I changed the names (for version & masters) to a date/time format.  They came in and look great, but on the back they just have some nonsensical codes.
Also, the prints are TOTALLY out of order.  Just random, and I ordered 110 of them.  Even though the album I created before ordering they are sorted by filename (and hence date).
So now I have to reorder them and
Of course, there's no way to contat apple about this.  1800myapple gets you to an automated system that will give you a tracking #, but if you request an operator, it just says "sorry, we can't help you" and hangs up.
I want to use this service again.  It was comparably priced, especially with the flat shipping fee.  The colors are way better than what I usually do which is just print them for pickup at walgreens.  But if I have to sort and label each one myself, I may have to look for alternate services.
    Thanks.

Even though the album I created before ordering they are sorted by filename (and hence date)
Yes, It is a pity that you cannot specify the sorting order when printing:
As a workaround: Duplicate your original image files (you can delete the duplicate masters afterwards)
and rename the original files with a number prefix by batch changing the version name and applying the change to the original files
or print a caption onto the image or the border of the image using the BorderFX plug-in http://www.iborderfx.com/BorderFX
To duplicate the original files/masters create a new, empty project named "DuplicatesToBePrinted" or similar; then drag the images from the album you want to print to this project with the options-key held down. This will duplicate the original masters image files. Any edits you do to these images will leafe the other images untouched.

  • Aperture not syncing with iPhone, iLife, iTunes, etc

The problem: Aperture isn't syncing.  I thought this was an iPhone problem, but apparently, it's a system wide thing.  Let me explain:
I'm running Aperture 3.2, but I've had this problem for a while now - probably since upgrading to Lion.
In Aperture, I have a smart album that contains any photo I've rated five stars.  Currently, there are 180 photos in it.  In iTunes, I've selected to sync certain things from Aperture to my iPhone.  If I click on that 5 Star smart album, it only shows that there are 21 photos.  Huh?  So, as a test, I opened iPhoto (which I never use).  In the File menu, I clicked "Show Aperture Library" and I selected my 5 Star smart album.  Sure enough, iPhoto only sees 21 photos in there.  But if I click over to Aperture, I see that smart album contains 180 images.
    What's going on here?
I should also note that a search of the forums here at Apple support show lots of people have been having similar problems, but most only notice they're missing photos when they sync their iPhone.  Clearly, the problem is deeper than that.  Aperture sees 180 photos in my 5 Star smart album.  iTunes, iPhoto and my iPhone are only able to sync 21 of them?
And how weird is this?  In Aperture, I have a smart album of shots that were taken with my iPhone and rated 3 stars or higher.  There are 115 shots in that smart album.  iTunes and iPhoto only see 38.
Somewhere, for whatever reason, Aperture is telling the rest of the system that it has far fewer images than it does.  How do I figure out where the problem is and how do I fix it?

Your workaround worked for me to until I started to use Aperture to adjust photos in several projects in Aperture. After that, Photos were missing again on my iOS devices etc., and I couldn't imagine the process on making new previews for all my 25.000 photos once again. My old MBP is just too slow.
I had to see if I could find a workaround to work with only the adjusted photos which looked as the ones missing after syncing to the iOS devices (or at least just the project in which the adjusted photos are).
This example works for me for the time being:
Usually a project (let's call it "XYZ") with newly imported photos have the same number of photos in Aperture and in the event with the same name XYZ on an iOS device.
If not all photos sync between Aperture and iOS (usually after adjusting photos in Aperture), I use this process, which I found out to use after adjusting several photos:
When I adjust a photo I let Aperture automatically make the adjustments in a new version and let the versions stay in a stack.
I make sure to change the rating for all the other photos in the stack to x (9) (i.e. except the version I want on my iOS devices - yes only one and the same versions goes to all the iOS devices, I sync via iTunes).
After rating be sure to use the pick function on the version you want on your device (the version rated higher than x (9) - which means that the wanted version "goes to the top of the stack".
Now view "unrated or better" (which means your x (9) rated photos won't show)
The process from here seems to work also if by any other reason photos won't show up on the iOS device.
Choose a project, all the photos in a project or just the photos missing in iOS, and delete the previews
Then generate thumbnails - this could take some time and for sure it takes time. At least if you need to do it with thousands of photos.
Close Aperture when all the new thumbnails and previews are generated.
Open iTunes and sync your iOS device. I think it works best (fastest) with the cable, but I think it should work via WiFi-sync too.
It is **** of a workaround, but it is the only way I can get all the right photos on my iOS devices after adjusting photos in Aperture.
The next coming up must be how to manage to sync back to Aperture the photos adjusted in iPhoto on the iOs devices:-)
Note: Any adjustments made to a version seems not to be deleted when deleting previews, but is kept and put back on a new generated preview.
