Aperture 3.1.3 and iPhoto sync problems

Upgraded to Aperture 3.1.3. Then upgraded to Lion. Tried to sync my iPhone and it got as far as photo's and got a -50 Sync error. Went to iTunes and turned off photo sync and the phone syn'd perfectly. Went back to iTunes turned photo sync back on, and got an error again. Went to iTunes turned off sync and checked the option to remove my photo's from the phone. Sync worked fine. Turned the photo sync back on, and it errored out when it was trying to reload the pictures. Turned off the Aperture photo sync and changed it to iPhoto. The next sync it reloaded my 1,500 photos without a hitch.
Bottom line: I explained all I have gone through so you can understand that it is not a corrupt photo library on the phone, and iPhoto sync'd fine, so it certainly appears that Aperture is once again the problem.

I am getting the same "Unknown error (-50)" when trying to sync photos from my Aperture 3 library now.
I did not upgrade to Lion (waiting for a 3rd party driver I need to be updated first for it), but I did update iTunes to 10.4 (80) recently and that is when I noticed the issue.
I haven't had this issue before. It syncs everything else but when iTunes goes from "Analyzing Photos" to "Optimizing Photos" in the sync process it reports that it is unable to sync because of an "unknown error (-50)"
To resolve the problem, I tried the following:
I repaired my Aperture library database (using Option+Command when launching Aperture 3).
Deleted the "iPod Photo Cache" folder inside my Aperture library. It had to resync all my photos again, this time it worked, but the next sync it had the same error again.
Updated my iOS to the latest version.
Did a Repair Disk Permissions on my Mac.
I changed USB cables and ports (using only ports directly on my Mac Pro).
Tried syncing with only iTunes running.
Doing all the above made no difference, I am still getting the error message and it won't sync new photos back to my iPhone 4 now.

• Iphone and iphoto syncing problems

Ive been importing my photos to my mac to clear up some space on my iphone, however every time my photos get moved on my mac, they somehow sync back onto my iphone as an album called "Events - From my mac" & "Last 12 months" which puts every photo i had just imported from my phone, back onto my phone. The problem is, these albums are 'un-deletable.' I initially thought it was my icloud but i turned off all my photo streams and what not so i dont think its that.. can anyone pls help me??! :-(

It could be that it is doing a sync from iTunes. Start iTunes with the phone connected, click on the phone under devices in the left pane of iTunes and then click on Photos in the list across the top and look to see what you have selected to sync. If you want to delete all of the synced albums on the phone, remove the checkmark in front of "Sync Photos From" on that page and sync again; if you want to delete some, change the selection and sync again. Each time you sync via iTunes it sets the non-Camera Roll photos on the phone to match the current settings in iTunes.

• Syncing aperture and iPhoto, syncing aperture and iPhoto

I'd like to switch back to iphoto from aperture.  I believe Apple isn't supporting aperture very well.  Any suggestions?

Neither Aperture nor iPhoto do support synching of their image databases or even synching between databases generated by different applications.
The way from iPhoto to Aperture is a one-way road - to import iPhoto Libraries into Aperture is well supported, but back from Aperture to iPhoto you will have to export your projects and to reimport manually. This makes sense, since iPhoto only offers a subset of Aperture's features.
I believe Apple isn't supporting aperture very well.
I will not discuss belief, but Aperture and iPhoto share many frameworks and the database engine; so the only thing you'll get by going back will be a simpler graphical user interface and reduced funtionality.
Good Luck

• Intermittent iPhoto sync problem

I've had an iPhone 4 for the past 4 months. Recently (around when I upgraded to iLife 2011), iPhoto sometimes does not "see" my iPhone. I'll plug it in, iTunes will open and start to sync, but iPhoto just sits there and the iPhone doesn't pop up in the side bar.
I've found that if I open up Image Capture and let it "scan" the iPhone for photos, iPhoto will recognize the iPhone when Image Capture finishes scanning. This takes about 5 minutes though, and is obviously just a nasty workaround.
Has anybody else experienced intermittent problems with iPhoto sync?
On topic feature request: I find that when iPhoto DOES recognize the device, the sync process is far from automated. It keeps asking me weather or not I want to import photos that have already been imported (why would I ever want to do that!?), and it then asks me if I want to delete photos from the iPhone as it imports. I think the default behavior should be like iTunes music sync. It just "updates" iPhoto with new photos, and leaves everything else alone. It would be nice to see this sync process built into iTunes so I don't have to worry about two applications syncing properly when I plug in my phone.

• IPod/iPhoto syncing problem HELP!!

I am writing this in desperation. I tried to sync my 30GB iPhoto library onto my iPod video. iTunes started filling up my hard drive. I had 8GB of free space on my hard drive, and now I have nothing. However 25GB of my iPhoto stuff made it to the iPod. I am wondering - does syncing iPhoto with iPod make iTunes double up the iPhoto? Does it place the entire library in the iTunes folder?
If I freed up more space, and the syncing completed, would the hard drive get back to its original state?` Is iTunes just occupying the space for syncing reasons?
Please help!! Thanks so much!!!

I am also having this problem with an 80G iPod. Anyone out there with a suggestion?

• IPhoto syncing problems iPad

Hi
I am having trouble syncing my iPad with my iPhoto library. When I try and sync through iTunes only selected photos seem to be synced, i.e. if I choose to sync a specific event not all the photos from the event are synced. For example, a recent event has 44 photos in it and when I sync only about 12 appear on the iPad. If I choose to sync more events the same thing happens. Some events most photos seem to be there and in others some are missing. All the photos are jpgs so my understanding is there should be no problem. Interestingly, if I take the photos and put them in a folder and sync the folder only - not through iPhoto on sync - all the photos come over (obviously not grouped in events). This to me suggests it is something to do with iPhoto indexing. I created the iPhoto databases and thumbnails index but this did not help. I have read that deleting the 'iPod Photo Cache" can help with this, so deleted that - but still no joy. I have read somewhere that the index file in iPhoto has limit (256mb or something) - i have 10,000 photos in my library so maybe this is the problem. I am not trying to sync all the photos just some events so space on the iPad (32GB) cannot be a problem. Please help? Bernie

Just checking to make sure that you did follow this procedure .... I copied this from one of my other posts and I'm merely double checking that you did restart the iPad after you tried this ....
Follow the instructions here to delete the iPod Photo cache and see if that helps.
iTunes: Photo sync creates iPod Photo Cache folder
Restart your iPad. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the red slider appears. Slide your finger across the slider to turn off iPad. To turn iPad back on, press and hold the Sleep/Wake until the Apple logo appears.
Now try syncing.
I have seen posters with more photos than you are trying to sync have success with this procedure so I don't think that the number of photos is the problem. You stated that creating a new folder and syncing the photos works that way so that proves to me that it isn't the number of photos that is causing the issue.
The only other suggestions I can think of are to create new names for the events using the same photos and try syncing that way. The other suggestion would be to delete your backup and try to the sync the photos.

• IPad, iCal and iTunes sync problem

Early last year, I posted (https://discussions.apple.com/message/18503738#18503738) that syncing between my iPad 3 and my Snow Leopard iMac behaved oddly.  AppleCare Support dweebs had failed to resolve the issue and no one on here managed to come up with any suggested fix.
However, for no apparent reason, the problem stopped and I stopped monitoring this august and highly esteemed forum and all went well ...
... until recently.
I sync via a USB cable and I do not use iCloud (as I'm on Snow Leopard) save for Find My iPad, all other iCloud options are switched off.  All other app syncing appears to work correctly, it is only iCal and Calendars that don't.
Just why things have started to go wrong now, probably in the last three or four weeks, I do not know but now the following syncing errors occur ...
1) On the iPad: new appointments or changes to appointments made on the iPad are not synced to the iMac;
2) On the iMac, changes to appointments already on the iMac are shown on the iPad as both the new and old timings/details, not as replacements;
3) On the iMac, new appointments are made in the default (or last) calendar used.  These are then edited as required, with the details put in and, if necessary, calendars changed.  On the iPad, however, these will show as both "New event" in the default calendar and as the edited correct appointment, not just as the finalised entry;
4) Appointments deleted from the iMac are not deleted from the iPad.
In other words, changes on the iPad are not synced across to the iMac and changes on the iMac are synced twice, once as the unedited appointment and once as the edited appointment - if an appointment is deleted it remains on the iPad.
When the original problem arose (similar but not identical) the Apple dweebs suggested deleting my iCloud account (not synced, used only for Find My iPad) but doing that this time does not remove the bug.
I'm running a 27" quad-core i7 iMac under MacOSX.6.8 (Build 10K549), iCal v4.0.4 (1395.7) and I sync via USB  and iTunes v11.0.2 (26).  The iPad is a 64GB 4G/wifi iPad 3, currently running under under iOS6.1.3.  To the best of my knowledge, all available updates have been applied to both devices.
I have deleted all calendars off the iPad by deselecting Calendars in iTunes' iPad tab, turned it off.  Swicthed off the iMac, Safe Booted and run OnyX full suite, I have then Single User booted, run fsck -fy three times then run applejack AUTO restart, then rebooted the iMac, rebooted the iPad, sync'd without Calendars then resynced with the Calendars selected again.
I had hoped that this would remove any cache files, temporary files, stuck RAM or whatever else could conceivably be causing this bizarre behaviour - to no bl**dy avail!  It is behaving exactly and frustratingly as before!
What on earth is going on?  if I can't use my iPad as my main calendar and add new appointments when out and about and have them synced properly and reliably to my iMac then the whole thing is a waste of time andI shall have to revert to a paper diary again!
HELP!!!!! Please, before I go mad with frustration!

I'm not sure whether getting no replies to this (or the earlier) query is something of which to be proud - or terrified!
Am I the only person in the world with this bizarre insoluble problem?  if so, why me?  Am I a Chosen One or, more likely, someone to be punished for a lifetime of misdeeds!
But there is progress.  I have no idea what happened at a technical level or why, but the matter has now resolved itself and things are syncing normally.  Until the next time!
Perhaps there is a clue somewhere in the following ...
I run my iMac 24/7 and thus I rarely close iCal on the iMac and when i do it is usually by accident.  The same applies to Calendars on the iPad, although I do reboot from time to time.
Anyway, I installed some software on the iMac which required a reboot and, as susual, iCal opened via Preferences > Accounts > Startup items - only this time I was presented with a perfectly blank calendar.  A message appeared, from within iCal (oh, how I wish i had noticed what it actually said) saying something along the lines of "importing calendars".  This took a little while and it wasn't instant - maybe it does this every time it reatrts but too fast for me to notice.
After this "import", if indeed that's what it was, the syncing was corrected!
Coincidence?  Cause and effect?  Magic?  Too many magic mushrooms for breakfast?
If that is what resolved the issue, then how can I cause an import deliberately for when the syncing goes astray again and just what does an "import" do that a normal launch doesn't and which might have resolved the glitch?
I have had this "import" message before, but very very rarely, so it may well have resolved the syncing issue last time and I just didn't make the possible connection.
Does that help anyone come to my rexcue with an explanation and, possibly, a strategy for preventing or deliberatly correcting syncing issues in the future?

• Aperture 3.4.1 and iPhoto 11 (9.4) in Lion 10.7.5?

I have created quite a mess here, and am not sure what to do about it.  I was looking for some photos that were in my iPhoto library and I saw a vault with the same name in Aperture, but none of the photos appeared.  The previous versions of Aperture would see iPhoto libraries and open them within Aperture, but this wasn't working.  I couldn't seem to share the photos between the apps.   So I found that Open Library in Aperture, which I did, and now I cannot get the two libraries separated. It will only open in one or the other application. It is really a mess.   Now I can only open the photos in one or the other at one time.  The previous workflow between the two apps was seamless. This one not at all.
I also see some old imports of libraries (iPhoto Library (1) , and iPhoto Library) in the Aperture app and there are duplicates of photos, library 1 has all the photos of the earlier library plus more current ones. I am wondering if the name iPhoto Library in an aperture project window is part of the confusion.
Anyway, this new workflow is really confusing if this is the way it is supposed to happen. If it isn't, I need a remedy. If it is, I  need some tricks and instructions about what the heck is going on.    I don't like this system at all. Apple really seems to have missed it with the upgrades to the two apps.
Any help appreciated...
Thanks
Jeff

Aperture 3.4.1 is sandboxed, and apparently it can no longer use external clients and plug-ins that are not sandboxed. Outlook and Entourage need to be updated to comply with MAcOS 10.7.5 and 10.8.x to work with Aperture 3.4.1.
See this lengthy discussion: Re: Aperture email sharing (Outlook) not working since upgrade to mountain lion
And send feedback Apple - Aperture - Feedback to Apple and Microsoft.

• Mountain Lion calendar and notes sync problems with exchange server via WLAN

After upgrading to Mountain Lion calendar and notes do not sync anymore with my exchange server via WLAN. There are no syncing problems via ethernet if WLAN is deactivated. Mail works fine with both connection types. Similar problems known? Solutions?
Thanks for any ideas.

Exact same issue ... cropped up in the past 2 weeks. Constantly syncing and re syncing. Watching calendar events show up and disappear. Tried all the normal stuff including deleting and re setting up the entire acct ... no luck. It built out the whole calendar correctly ( from what I could tell) and then started to sync again and appointments randomly appeared and disappeared .....

• OS X v10.7, iCal and iCloud - sync problems

BLUF: After installing OS X v.10.7, iCal will not accept my iCloud password and thus will not sync/update my calander events on the laptop to my other devices or to the cloud.  Sync-ing is fine between other devices and the cloud, so the Cloud isn't the problem.
Details: I recently allowed Lion to install it's most current update.  At the conclusion of the install, it rebooted and gave me the option to install a new version of Lion or to recover from TimeCapsule/TimeMachine.  I assume the update failed for some reason, and it was unable to reboot as planned, but it did not give me any indication of the problem nor did it provide any error messages.  I allowed it to install a new version of Lion.  Unfortunately, not a good start to an OS update.
The reinstall seemed to be ok except that it reset/changed some of my settings for mail accounts and now iCal will not log into iCloud.  I have entered the correct iCloud password and it keeps coming  back with the same dialog box saying the password is wrong and to re-enter.  I have verified both the account name and password by logging into iCloud directly which works fine.  New items place on the calendar are never synced to the cloud or to other devices, however, sincing from other devices to the cloud and back is not a problem.
Any help or suggestions appreciated.  Thanks.

Problem has been solved - for those who possibly have the same problem, I will note what I did.  The trouble-shooting guide mentioned disabling/re-enabling iCloud calendars in iCal through the System Preferences.  I noticed when I attempted to do this that iCloud wasn't there anymore.  Apparently the reinstall of Lion (after the failed upgrade from 10.7.2 to 10.7.4) required me to re-reinstall (install?) the 10.7.4 upgrade.  Once this was done, the iCal connected properly to iCloud and is syncing.
I have also now started the download on MountainLion - hopefully this is an enhancement instead of a source of new problems.

• Aperture 3 RAW conversion and hot pixel problem

I've used every version of Aperture since release, but I'm not very happy with the RAW conversion in Aperture3.
My images from earlier versions have no hot pixel problems but if I update to the new processing I can see them.
Single red or green pixel in the 100% crop image, that didn't show up before and also don't show up in LR.
The images I'm importing are NEF files from a Nikon D2x.
Is this a bug in the new RAW conversion for this camera?
It makes all of my images now unusable through Aperture if I reprocess them?

I haven't noticed the pixel issues that you mention, but I wasn't looking for that yet. Instead, my images from my Nikon D300 have been stressing A3 out as follows....
I have been having new issues with A3 now. I bought A3 when it was 1st available and had all of the same issues that plagued some users, I worked through it and until recently have loved A3.
While editing I noticed that A3 had a large number of my photos, about 30% of 34,000 images, labeled as being processed under an earlier version (A2). I decided to go ahead and re-reprocess the images, even though this step took a couple of weeks and countless crashes when I first purchased A3. Again, just over a week later, the images are now re-reprocessed within A3. And a new problem cropped up.
My Macbook is...

and when I open A3 and begin looking at my images, the program is slow to respond and when it opens an image I get a very unprocessed version of lines for up to 5 seconds before the image finally loads. The image and all edits do load, but the workflow is significantly effected and I would like to know why this is happening now, and how to fix it. Below is an example of what happens with each image.

• Aperture 3.4.1 and Iphoto Browser

I have Aperture 3..4.1. I am going through the manual and it says I can import selected photos from my iPhoto library by going to File>Import>Show iPhoto Browser (or press Option I). There is no "Show iPhoto Browser" under File>Import, and selecting Option I does nothing. I do not want to import my entire IPhoto Library into Aperture - only selected photos. Am I missing a setting here somehow? I am up to date on Aperture and iPhoto both.
Thanks....

The iPhoto Library Browser is no longer available, sorry.
Since iPhoto ans Aperture share a unified library format, it is no longer necessary to import iPhoto images to Aperture, to be able to use Aperture's advanced image adjustments on the images. Just open the iPhoto Library in Aperture.
To import only selected images from iPhoto to Aperture,
open your iPhoto Library in Aperture,
create an album with the images that you want to import,
export this albums as an Aperture library,
then import this library into your main Aperture library.

• Aperture 3 and Flickr sync problems

Hi!
I started using Aperture 3 recently and made the mistake of authorizing Aperture to sync with Flickr.  I hate it!  Now I want to deauthorize it somehow but don't know where or how?  I've read horror stories that all of my Flickr photos will be deleted from Flickr if I deauthorize, but none of my Flickr photos were uploaded from Aperture, they were already in Flickr and were automatically synced to Aperture once I authorized it.  Now that I realize I've made a mistake I want to get out, but how?
TIA!
Debbie

I have been using the sync feature between my Aperture library and Facebook and Flickr for 6 months and I finally gave up on it yesterday.
As an example of what I usually go through, I uploaded 159 photos to my flickr account this past weekend, then added some captions/descriptions/tags etc. on flickr (was that a mistake?). Then Aperture promptly undid some my work at the next synchonization... I don't want photos on my stream named DSC_6788.jpg, etc.  Thing is, Aperture undoes some of what I do on Flickr but not all.  There's no rhyme, reason, or pattern to it.  If I use Aperture to add tags (by entering keywords in the right field), even those partially disappear after the next sync.
Another maddening thing is that it makes the filename the caption on Facebook albums.  I/e/. if, on Facebook, I added a desctiptive caption on a picture such as "Mommy and Daddy making out under the Eiffel Tower" (totally a made up example), then next time a synch happens, the caption would be "DSC_8646.jpg."  Gee, thanks for the help, Aperture.
For 6 months I have lived in fear of opening up Aperture.  Will the sync mess up what I've published online?
There should be option to not have Aperture override what you do on flickr (and Facebook).  I am a strong believer in the "Publish and Forget" model for places like Flickr and Facebook, not the sync model.
For now, it's back to export to a folder and upload via the uploader.

• My solution for the "Error -50" and/or "Syncing" problem

Hi
After upgrading to iPhoto 5.0.2 I also had the "Error: -50" problem"
How have I solved this problem => also with the help and tips from other forums.
• Before the upgrade all my pictures from iPhoto were available on my iPod Photo (30 GB)
• After the upgrade of iPhoto to 5.0.2 I received the "Error: -50" every time I tried to synchronize my iPod. Strange, strange, strange, ...
=> first I detected that putting pictures on my iPod starting from a folder (in stead of iPhoto) worked fine.
Trying to change back to iPhoto did not work and no albums where available in the iPod Options view!
=> then I tried to create a new iPhoto library (press and hold Option(alt)-key while starting iPhoto), put some pictures and albums in it ... and even this did not work.
What did I do to solve this problem!
1. I thrashed my iPhoto application (DO NOT empty you trash, because you have to put it back again)
2. I used "Disk Utility" to repair the disk permissions.
3. I put back my iPhoto application from the thrash (same location as before - Applications folder)
4. and did again a "repair disk permissions"
5. then I tried to sync my NEW iPhoto library on my iPod and EUREKA this worked.
6. Then I switched back to my original iPhoto library (launch iPhoto holding the Option key).
7. Tried to sync ... again the same problem => no pictures and albums available in the iPod - Optoins - Photo tab.
=> conclusion : the problem has to be in my iPhoto library
8. after trying many things (such as eliminating albums => trail and error method) I found the cause for my problem.
=> I used KEYWORDS in my iPhoto library with strange characters and had SMART albums using it. In my situation it was the "&" character.
Replacing or removing this character solved my problem. All my pictures and albums were available in the iPod - Options - Photo tab
9. Sync could be started ... Youpi!
After synchronizing my iPhoto library I noticed that not all pictures were available on the iPod. I start looking which pictures that were missing on my iPod. When I found them I wanted to know why they were not synchronized.
I found the explanation in the file "AlbumData.xml" in the "iPhoto Library" folder.
If you open this file with TextEdit and search for this missing file then you'll find that (at least in my case) corresponding path does not exist (any more). And that was the case for each missing file!
How solving this problem?
1. I tried rebuilding the iPhoto Library => launch iPhoto holding the Option and Command keys. This did not work.
2. What did I do?
2.1. First I exported all my Pictures from the active iPhoto Library (Share - Export)
=> VERY IMPORTANT NOTE : all extra info such as "Key words", Albums, ... will NOT be saved!
2.2. I created a new iPhoto Library (launch iPhoto holding the Option key)
2.3. Then I imported all exported pictures.
=> if you check the file paths in the AlbumData.xml file, you'll see that this info is correct!
2.4. At least I recreated (manually) all "Key words", Albums, ... so I had a duplicate of my original Library.
I hope this also works for other people with the same problem.
Greetings
P@nt@ni

Here my solution for the itunes' "unknown error -50" and not showing any albums in the prefs' tab:
1. All rebuilding options in iphoto didn't resolve the problem.
2. I opened the file "AlbumData.xml" in the iPhoto-Library-Folder with a text editor. I figured out, that the problem wasn't in the Albums, but in the "Master Image List"-Section. They look like this:
              <key>1741</key>
              <dict>
.. titles, filenames, ....
</dict>
After making a backup of this file, I started deleting entries here (you know, the fastest way to do it is to split it always in halves and check in iTunes if the error still exists). After about half an hour I got the problem key.
3. The problem was: Some (curious) white spaces at the BEGINNING of the comment! Curious, because they weren't visible in iPhoto's comment, but I could delete them in Iphoto! I guess they weren't normal space characters, but any special symbols (line feeds? whatever)
4. After that, the -50 error was gone. Now I could see the Album Names. But the sync stopped after a while with a "... file not found...." - error.

iTunes 5.0.1 (4)
OS X 10.3.9
