Aperture 3.1 doesn't export lens metadata

When I export images from Aperature (File->Export->Version), they are missing lens metadata.
I exported a master version of an image and a version of the same image.
I open both the master and the version in DxO.
The master contains lens metadata with a value of "18-105mm f/3.5-5.6" and the version is simply blank.
This is a fresh copy of Aperature 3.1, with no plugins, and I can repeat this behavior for any master image that contains lens metadata.
Is this a bug that will be fixed in a Aperature update? This is a very frustrating bug.

I bought AP 3.1 after my metadata nightmares with iPhoto '09 (I wasn't going to pay for '11). AP 3 has some nice features (like iPhoto on steroids) and its metadata handling is much better than iPhoto. But this bug is really, really messing with my photo processing workflow.
I'm going to keep looking for a solution (I haven't had the time thus far) and will update the thread. Thanks for the confirmation of the bug, and the commiseration

  • Aperture 3.4.5 EXIF Export (Lens information missing)

Hi, it seems this is not a new issue. But maybe there is a workaround. As Aperture 3.4.5 does not have tools for decent lens correction I was trying to establish a workflow with DxO Optics Pro 8.2. I prefer doing most of my adjustments with A3 based on Nikon NEF files (all Metadata is available). When I export the files (JPEG/TIFF) some of the Metadata gets lost, annoyingly enough incl. the lens type. Now this is a problem because DxO cannot work without this info. To do it the reverse (starting with DxO and the NEF) does not make sense to me. What should I do? PT Lens seems to work, but not as good as DxO. Apart from that, DxO has a nice noise reduction too. Any ideas how to handle that problem?

I use exiftool to add missing EXIF-tags, see these examples:
Modifying EXIF tags of Originals Using exiftool: camera, lens, gps
But I do not know of a graphical frontend for exiftool that works on a mac, so you would have to use the command line commands from the Terminal.

  • Need to export custom metadata fields to a national data base, can I ???

In Aperture3 are custom tags embedded in exported Versions or Masters. I have a task to embed matadata on 2000 items and need to pass on the information to someone who doesn’t have Aperture

I am not sure whether you really can embed custom metadata in the jpeg file itself. However you can quite easily export all metadata associated with a file in Aperture using AppleScript. The script below shows you how it works in principle with the different data categories in aperture: IPTC, custom fields etc. To adapt the script to your needs, replace eg "Photo Category" with the name of your own custom field. By copy/paste you can add more fields...
    tell application "Aperture"
    set tSelection to the selection
-- this is the header, not really necessary
set tValues to "Version Name" & tab
set tValues to tValues & "File Name" & tab
set tValues to tValues & "Keywords" & tab
set tValues to tValues & "Category" & tab
set tValues to tValues & return
    --here starts the real stuff
repeat with i from 1 to number of items in tSelection
set tImg to item i of tSelection
    --add Version name
    try
set t to name of tImg
    on error
    set t to ""
    end try
set tValues to tValues & t & tab
    try
    --add FileName
set t to the value of other tag "FileName" of tImg
    on error
    set t to ""
    end try
set tValues to tValues & t & tab
    try
    --add IPTC tag
set t to the value of IPTC tag "Keywords" of tImg

    set t to ""
    end try
set tValues to tValues & t & tab
    try
    --add a custom field
set t to the value of custom tag "Photo Category" of tImg
    on error
    set t to ""
    end try
set tValues to tValues & t & tab
    --next line/image
set tValues to tValues & return
    end repeat
set f to choose file name with prompt "Choose file name..."
    set my_log to tValues
set mylogfile to open for access f with write permission
set eof of mylogfile to 0
write my_log to mylogfile starting at eof

  • How to export custom metadata fields

How do I export custom metadata fields (or even the DATE) to a text or spreadsheet? Why does Aperture have dozens of metadata choices, but only allows a few to be exported?

You can try Automator which must be installed already in your computer. Create a new workflow, on the left pane select Aperture to see a list of actions, select "get selected items" and "extract metadata", and drag both to the right most pane. there you'll choose the Tag names to extract from the images already selected inside aperture and choose an output method, tabbed text should work fine for a spreadsheet. Hope it works.

  • Sharing to flickr doesn't push the metadata of modified photos

In iPhoto 09, we can share photo on flickr.
There is a very annoying problem though. If a photo has been modified in iPhoto, the metadata is lost (well, it's not lost really, since it's kept in a database outside of the file) but the file corresponding to the working copy of the photo doesn't contain the metadata of the original file. Although this is very annoying for many reasons, I understand that one photo in iPhoto is not necessarily 1 file. Fine.
The problem is that contrary to when a photo is exported, the metadata is not added to a photo that is shared on flickr (using the new 09 "share to flickr feature").
It works correctly when sharing on facebook though.
Here is a very basic scenario:
Take a photo in "landscape" mode and another in "portrait" mode.
Import them in iPhoto. Normally, the one in "portrait" mode will be rotated automatically by iPhoto so that it is displayed as it was meant to be display (great).
Select those 2 photos and share them on flickr.
The one in portrait mode will not have a "date/time taken" so the value will be the same as for "date/time uploaded". The one in "landscape" mode should be fine.
I think this is because the file that is shared for the picture in landscape mode is still the original file while the one for the portrait photo is a working copy that doesn't contain the metadata.
Is this a bug? Any chances to get a fix?

    I believe so.
I have done some more tests and it looks like only the photos that have been rotated automatically because they were taken in portrait mode are affected.
For example, the pictures that I have modified in iphoto are exported AND shared on flickr with all the metadata. So it is not a matter of having a working copy of the original photo or having the original photo file.
It is really only for pictures that were taken in portrait mode.
I have done this simple test:
I import a photo that was taken in portrait mode, and export it with all the possible information check box checked (including location)
=> the exported photo doesn't contain the "generated date" and contains very little metadata (it does contain the location though).
I then go back to iPhoto, and "revert" the photo "to original". It doesn't appear to change, and it still is displayed in portrait mode. But now if I export it, the export contains the full metadata.
If I export a photo that got heavy modifications but that was taken in landscape mode, all the metadata is there.
So it really looks like a bug related to the "portrait" automatic orientation. The metadata is lost somehow...

  • Exporting Custom Metadata to Excel

I've created custom metadata views and presets for cataloging my images. Is it possible to export this metadata into an Excel spreadsheet as a CSV or TSV file? File/Export/Metadata exports standard metadata, but not my custom fields and entries. Or, is it possible to export XMP sidecar files and somehow import those into Excel? All that data is there somewhere within Aperture - please help me get it out and into a spreadsheet! Thanks.

  • Exporting Specific Metadata

Hi. I know how to export metadata, but I can't seem to limit which metadata I want exported. In many cases I'd just like to export the captions for a group of photos to send to a publisher without pulling just that info out of the messy text file.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks,

    .

Time to hit the Aperture feedback page. If you include metadata, you include the EXIF data.
About all you could do is export with no metadata, import the new 'stripped' file and then lift-n-stamp the IPTC data onto it, then export that.

  • Aperture 3.4.1 photos exported to Photoshop CS6 have pink hue

I click on a photo in Aperture 3.4.1 and export it to Photoshop CS6. The photo has a pink hue. This never happened before, and to add to the problem, it doesn't happen with every photo...just some of them.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks.

  • Export custom metadata

Does anyone know a way of exporting custom metadata in Aperture? The standard export only seems to apply to ITPC data.

RedKite provided this script for exporting to a tab-delimited text file in an archived forum. Copy the script to the Apple script editor. Change "category" in the upper section and "photo category" in the lower section to the name of your custom field. Run it. To add more custom fields, copy and paste the custom field section in the lower part. Add a corresponding line to the upper part. The upper part is the column name on the spreadsheet.
This script is old, It works for the version name, file name, and custom fields. It does not work for Keywords (written into the script) or other IPTC fields written the same way. Does anyone know a script that does both IPTC and custom fields in Aperture 3 in 2013?

  • How do I export custom metadata?

My Aperture setup only exports some metadata fields and not all the fields I need to include. I've added some custom fields to the metadata list, ie model release, see image, but these won't export. How can these be included in my export? Thanks Tim.

Tim -- glad to help.  You've likely already resolved this better, but if you haven't, this might get the ball rolling.  The data you need to have _in the exported file_ is, afaict, "Is this model released?  Y/N".  The specifics of the release, and the actual release, don't need to be in the file -- they just need to locatable from the information in the file.  For this, a keyword suffices as long as your file naming allows you to find the Image in your Aperture Library.  I would keep the custom field -- they can be, as you know, quit useful -- but add a keyword (e.g.: "ReleasedYES").  Additionally, I would create a global Smart Album set to show all Images where the custom field "Model Release" is _not_ empty _and_ the keyword "ReleasedYES" is _not_ applied.  Add to your regular administrative workflow examining the contents of this Smart Album and adding the keyword "ReleasedYES" to any Images in it.
Since this information is likely very important to your business, you might consider using the most visible of Aperture's metadata:  Color Labels.  (The catch with Color Labels is that each Image can have only one of the eight possible labels.  There are few conditions that have eight discrete states.  Perhaps there are levels of release?)
Of course, your implementation is sure to be better customized, etc.  I just thought this might give you some ideas.

  • Movie in Keynote doesn't export properly for QuickTime

Hello all. I really hope someone can help with this. I've used the discussions before with great success so THANK YOU all for sharing your expertise.
I've got a keynote presentation that for the most part exports perfectly on QuickTime. The only part that doesn't export right are the 2 videos I've got on the presentation. I set the timing with the inspectors for it to start automatically and even added a song to play along with the presentation. But when I export it, there is about an extra minute and 15 seconds added to the whole video and I've got the presentation timed perfectly with keynote and the song. I've got iWork '09 and QT 10.0. Not pro just player.
I've played with the custom settings to no avail. Any way to get the videos to export exactly to their lengths?
    Cheers

I don't know if this is the answer you're looking for but I'll share my experience. Like you, I have three videos in my presentation. Once I exported it as a QT movie, the delays that I built in with the Inspector to allow the movie to play before the next slide transition, played AFTER the video ran. I went back and just put in a 1.5 second delay in and the videos run fine. I'm guessing that QT sees the video and allows it to play and THEN looks at the Delay setting.
Now if someone can just tell me how to get the audio soundtrack to shut down during my three videos but play during the rest of the presentation...

  • Context right-click to export XMP metadata to file

I'd like to have the right click context menu include the option to "Export XMP Metadata to Files" in the Library grid or filmstrip. Currently an annoying trip to the Menu bar is required to invoke this function.

It was there for B4.1. The Contextual Menus are getting crowded, so maybe that's why they took it out.
I like lots of Contexual Menus, too. But they get a little useless if too crowded, so maybe they need ot be user configuarable for what one uses the most.
    Maybe by V1.5?

  • Missing Camera and Lens Metadata after iPhoto Import

I've noticed that the Photos for Mac app seems to have "lost" all of the Camera and Lens Metadata associated with each of my photos. Has this happened to anyone else?
No matter which photo I choose, the Info inspector window shows "No Camera Information" and "No Lens Information".  I've confirmed that the Camera and Lens metadata is still present in the original iPhoto Library.
If I create a new iPhoto Library with just a dozen or so pictures and then choose that Library when launching Photos for Mac, by pressing the Option key while clicking the Icon, the photos are imported with the Metadata intact.  Clearly something went wrong with the import of my much larger main iPhoto library. (The main library has over 100,000 photos in it.)
I'm wondering if there is some way to force Photos for Mac to re-index the Metadata.  Any thoughts?
    Thanks,

    Hi Jim,
It fails to shorten to the maximum long edge requested, leaving longer-edged files in the exported folder.
Never had this problem with Lightroom4.  Just upgraded to 5.  My operating system is Windows Pro 8.

  • HT4028 Aperture IPTC Core Subject Code Exports Incorrectly to PhotoMechanic

Hello. When using IPTC core Subject Code in Aperture, what I type in exports incorrectly when read by PhotoMechanic Software.  It seems to default back to previous Subject Code entries that are invisible on my end using Aperture, and can't be "erased".  Anyone else having this problem, and please advise on how to fix this.  I have contacted Apple tech support multiple times and they have been unable to resolve this problem.

Preview should be able to do this
In Preview you can see the field in the Inspector:
From Peview's main menu bar: Tools > Show Inspector.
    Select the IPTC tab
I tested several images - when I set the IPTC Subject Code and exported the edited version as jpeg, the modification showed in Preview correctly in the IPTC Subject code field.
    Tested in Aperture 3.5.1, MacOS X 10.9.1
