Aperture 3.2 Upgrade Library Message on Startup

Hello,
I've ran into a problem with the latest update to Aperture.  Seems like there are other issues with this update, but I haven't found any info on the forums or elsewhere that addresses the problem I am having.
When I open Aperture, it tells me that my library needs to be updated to 3.2.  I click "OK" and then Aperture opens and there is a status bar that pops up and finishes with a message like "Aperture Library has been updated" and then Aperture opens.  Everything seems fine while I am in Aperture.  However, this scenario happens EVERY time I open Aperture.  No matter how long I keep Aperture open (I've tried overnight), this message continues to pop up when I open the program.
I am running the latest version of Aperture (3.2.2, I believe).  I have about 11,000 photos (or 120GB).  I've tried reinstalling Aperture.  I have also just tried reformatting the entire computer, reinstalling Aperture and still have the same issue.
Given that the reinstall of the OS and Aperture didn't fix the issue, I would think the issue could be in the Aperture Library file in my Photo library (all program files are in their default locations).  I've seen the fix where you can hold down Option and Command while opening Aperture, but that doesn't work for me because you can't get past the Upgrade Library message that pops up.  It won't go to the Restore/Repair window that is supposed to open when holding down the Option / Command buttons while opening the app.
Any suggestions would be very appreciated.

Try the following:
You say that Aperture runs fine, while it has finished upgrading.
When Aperture is running, create a new Library : File menu -> Switcht to Library -> Other/New
Then quit Aperture, this should set the Aperture Preferences to open with your new library in future.
Launch aperture again. This time there should be no upgrade dialogue, since the Library was created by the current version.
Now you could try to import the old library into the new one.

  • Aperture won't upgrade library

Hi, I split my library into a set of libraries based on year.  I have in total around 70,000 photos in 14 libraries.  Its been about a year that I have maintained this format. The last upgrade to Aperture seems to have messed up my libraries.
At this point, I am trying to create one Aperture library with all the photos.
I created a new library and started importing each existing one into it.  However, I am getting an error “The library could not be imported because it is from an out of date version of Aperture 3. Please upgrade…”.  If I open Aperture and try switching to one of these libraries that I cannot open from within Aperture, I get the message, “The selected library is from an older version of Aperture and requires a relaunch to switch”.  When I switch it does not offer to upgrade.
I reinstalled iPhoto and tried switching to one of my libraries and received the message that the library needs to be upgraded first in Aperture.  This upgrade does not occur as I have detailed in this message.
I’ve read Apple’s support pages, I have search the internet and this forum.  Nothing I have done has solved my issue. I’ve rebuilt, repaired the libraries and repaired permissions for example.  The last recourse I have is to relocate my originals.  I’m using that has a last resort. I’m afraid I will lose my versions and other settings in the process.
Any ideas on how to fix this import error?
    Thank you in advance.

    Hi,
I had a similar issue as you a while back and it was a permissions issue.  Apple does not recommend placing Aperture libraries on a NAS.  I back mine up to a NAS but I do not use the library from the NAS. Using a Sparse Image format, you can create a virtual HFS+ drive on the NAS and mount that.  Then you can use your Aperture library that way.  I use Sparse Images to backup my data to the NAS. Disk Utility, Carbon Copy Cloner and other tools can create these drives for you. You might find backups and file access will be faster using a disk image vs  using the NAS directly as well.
My external drive which contains the Aperture libraries, is connected via Thunderbolt connection, not a NAS per se...
For external drives, I found going to the Info section for the external drive (right click on drive icon) and near the bottom is a checkbox which states "Ignore Ownership on this Volume"   Check that box and it should resolve the issue like I was experiencing.
I corrected mine by going to each Aperture library and selecting 'Me' as owner.
One note, when I checked off the "Ignore ownership..." checkbox, now my NAS is syncing the external drive folder 'Pictures' with the NAS.  I have a Synology NAS and setup a shared folder in the cloud between the external drive and my NAS.  This way my backup on the NAS is in sync with the Pictures folder on my external drive.  Prior to this, I used Carbon Copy Cloner on a schedule for backing up my Pictures folder. I still use Carbon Copy Cloner as its a great tool but for this particular case, I chose the Synology cloud.
So, to summarize, I repaired/rebuilt my libraries, repaired disk permissions, modified the ownership flag...
Another source I used for correcting my issues was at the Photosexpert website.  Its a great source. https://thephotosexpert.com/forum

  • HT2513 upgrading calendars message upon startup

My iCal keeps starting up on its own as I turn on my MacBookPro.  I have selected that no apps fire up at start up but iCal seems to ignore that.  Then I get a window with a progress barber pole saying "Upgrading Calendars" without any buttons or any way to x out of it.  It stays on indefinitely... and is very annoying
    anyone else have this issue?
    Thanks

The following steps will allow you to do an uninstall of iTunes.
    1) Go into Applications and drag iTunes into the trash.
    2) Highlight the Macintosh HD, then Library, then open the Receipts folder.
    3) Delete any file that has iTunes listed.
    4) Go to www.apple.com/itunes/download and install the program.

  • Upgrade Aperture 3.2.4 Library to 3.5.1

    Hi,
I just upgraded from a MBP 1.83 GHz to a new iMac.
I am trying to open or import my MBP Aperture Library (3.2.4) in my iMac Library (3.5.1), but Aperture tells me:
The library could not be imported because it is from an out of date version of Aperture 3. Please upgrade the library to the latest version of Aperture 3 and try again.
When I go to File > Switch to Library > Other / New and select the MBP Library, Aperture tells me:
The selected library is from an older version of Aperture and requires a relaunch to switch.
Choose “Relaunch” to relaunch Aperture with the new library.
But then nothing happens, and Aperture reopens the current library.
Problem is that I cannot upgrade from my MBP as I cannot upgrade to the latest version of macos.
Therefore, I wonder how to proceed.
    Any advice will be welcome!
    Thanks

Hello, I thought I'd chime in on this too, because I have had a lot of trouble getting this to work as well.
I followed lots of post around the internet and found nothing worked.
I did the usual upgrade thing that most people have done, and upgraded from Snow Leopard to Mavericks, only I had this exact problem, and I got stuck in the endless loop too. I tried clearing out the user preferences and restarting the computer, only to have it still not work.
Fortunately for me, when I installed Mavericks, I did it on to a fresh SSD drive, and left my Snow Leopard "Macintosh HD" still bootable.
I booted in to SL, and I then ran Apeture, 3.2.4. I did a repair of the DB. (hold down OPTION and COMMAND when starting to get the repair message) at the start.
When it was complete, I restarted the computer back in to Mavericks and then tried loading the Library the same way as before. Eg. File, Switch to Library, Import/Open etc. Still nothing.
I then just did as the above posts suggested. I found the library, and double clicked it, and it said, Do you wish to upgrade to 3.5.1. YES. It seems to be working so far.
Thanks. Just thought I'd share, in case any more information for others was key as well.

  • Error Message - "Aperture cannot access this library"

I'm using OS 10.5.7 and Aperture 2.1.3. I recently had an error message pop-up when I try to start Aperture that says, "Aperture cannot access this library. To use this library, make sure its file permissions are set correctly." Unfortunately, I can't seem to open up my library. Any ideas how to fix this or what is wrong? Thanks

    Hello,
attached I would like to report how the problem solved.
    1. I had 63 Minute Call to Apple Support and we are tring some things. Finally I Spend spend 1 day for testing.
    2. Testing procedure:
    A) I exported each project step by step
    B) Than I deleted all appr. 50 projects in Aperture Library.
    C) After that I Imported each project to Aperture back.
Result: 2 Project was corrupted, one of it was going well after export/import procedure how ever but the second ones error was constant appearing if I try to import it. The project consisting of 512 jpg files in total appr. 500MB.
    The solution for this project:
I moved this jpg´s to waste bin und imported it from waste bin to Aperture again into a new project. Than I tested it again(Export/import) and it was fine.
For final check I delete my Aperture backup und start a new one.
Than start a compleate restoring from that last backup.
Every thing was fine, all project include albums or books are ok.
The pictures in the corrupted project was not imported by Aperture, they was created on a PC system(XP). Maybe that was the reason for the problem.
A friend sad, that windows use not the agreed standard for jpg´s.
I don´t know. So I´m happy all my books are back that is imported for a wedding photographer.
    Have fun

  • Trying to open Aperture, but I get the message, "There was an error opening the database for the library "/Users/davewasson/Pictures/Aperture Library.aplibrary". - and it forces me to quit. What do I do?

Trying to open Aperture, but I get the message, "There was an error opening the database for the library “/Users/davewasson/Pictures/Aperture Library.aplibrary”. - and it forces me to quit. What do I do?

    Dave-
You can try opening the old (problem) library by launching Aperture into Library First Aid mode and choosing to Repair (first option) or Rebuild the library. Before doing this, make a backup copy of the old library, since both Repair or Rebuild will write changes to the library database.
Repair is the faster and less drastic option, so try that first: After backing up your library, hold down both the Option and Command keys while dragging and dropping the problem library on the Aperture icon. The Photo Library First Aid window appears. Select Repair Database, then click Repair. After some time Aperture should open the library, if possible.
If that fails launch Aperture back into Library First Aid and select Rebuild Database. Depending on the size of your library this operation could take some time, up to several hours for a very large library. When the main window appears you may have some extra Recovered folders/projects. This operation rebuilds the library from scratch and is usually successful at reviving problem libraries.

  • Aperture is asking to upgrade library every time I open the application, even after it has already been upgraded.  I just ran the update and it is still not fixed.  What can I do???

Aperture is asking to upgrade library every time I open the application, even after it has already been upgraded.  I just ran the update and it is still not fixed.  What can I do???  My plug are asking me to re-register them too.  This is annoying.  Please help!!!!!

How do you try to start the repair dialogue? By starting Aperture or by opening the Library?
If you not already have tried it with directly opening the library:
reveal your Aperture Library in the Finder
Whilst holding down Command(⌘)- option (⌥) double click on the Aperture Library.
Select "repair library" from the dialogue.
What about Frank Caggiano's questions above?
It would be really helpful to know, how many libraries you have, and if this problem is restricted to one of them.

  • Aperture will not open library - permissions not correct -- but they are

How do I get Aperture to open a library when I get an error message saying the permissions are not correct, but the permissions are correct, and other libraries open fine?
I was using Aperture current version with a library on an external drive connected via airport extreme. I imported about 15 images to an existing project in that library and was editing the images when Aperture closed suddenly. When I try to reopen the same library I get an error message that says Aperture does not have access to that library because the permissions are not correct. But the permissions are set to everyone read write. Aperture opens other libraries on the same drive with the same permission setting.
    1. I ran disk utility repair permissions -- it says it fixed permissions on my laptop internal drive, but disk utility does not recognize the external drive so apparently it did nothing on that drive. Same error message on that library.
    2. I deleted user name >> Library >> Preferences >> com.apple.Aperture.plist and tried opening the library again. Same error message.
    3. I tried rebuilding the library using control command Aperture. Same error message.
    4. I used "show package contents" on that library and moved the project I had been working on when Aperture crashed to another drive and created a new library and imported the project successfully. Works.
I read through existing topics and found suggestions like 1-4 but none work for me.
I would be grateful for any help!
    Thanks.

Please tell me you aren't trying to do this wirelessly!?!
If you're wired to the Airport Extreme, that's better, but forget about running a remote Aperture library on a wireless connection! Even wireless 802.11n isn't fast enough, though I'm sure someone will argue that.
Still, the Airport Extreme only has a USB interface, which is painfully slow! Firewire 800 is supported on all the new MacBook Pros and on the 17" "gen1" MacBook Pros. I'd highly recommend a FireWire 800 external hard drive or even a eSATA interface if you're running Aperture libraries remotely!!
Depending on your total storage needs, just replace your internal MacBook Pro's hard drive. I've replaced a few in the past couple of weeks in some MacBook Pros to the 320GB WD Scorpio drive. Also buy a cheap (~$20) external USB enclosure for your old hard drive to repurpose your old internal drive and aid the restoration of your data. Next install the drives and use Migration Assistant to restore your data to precisely where you were before the hard drive upgrade. Pretty easy except for the actual install of the hard drive in the MacBook Pro, which can be tricky and requires special Torx tools; certainly more complicated than the standard MacBooks. Unless you know what you are doing here, pay someone skilled to do this for you.
Seriously, I'm sure part of your problem is the lousy transfer speeds for Aperture trying to read data, causing data corruption, especially when you force quit so often.

  • I keep getting a message on startup saying 'Do you want the application "KodakAiOBonjourAgent .app" to accept incoming network connections?' It says settings may be changed in the Firewall pane of Security? Doesn't matter what I click (Deny/Submit).

I keep getting a message on startup saying 'Do you want the application "KodakAiOBonjourAgent .app" to accept incoming network connections?' It says settings may be changed in the Firewall pane of Security but I don't see how.  Doesn't matter what I click (Deny/Submit). The message still pops up on starup. I have a Kodak printer and am running Mavericks but I don't think it started when I upgraded.

Just fixed this on my machine, the easiest way to remove this pop-up assuming you are no longer needing that software to print is the following:
    Open Finder
    Go > Go To Folder...
    Type In: "~/Library/Application Support"
    Delete All Folders Named Kodak
    Open System Preferences
    Go to "Security & Privacy"
Click the lock and enter your admin password
    Click the Firewall Tab
    Go to "Firewall Options..."
    Find KodakAiO
Right-click KodakAiOBonjourAgent or equivalent (I forget the exact name)
    Click "Show in Finder"
Go Back to a folder and delete the Kodak Folder there.
Remove Kodak from Firewall Options by selecting it and clicking the " - " button the base of the list.
       or
    Open Finder
    Go > Go To Folder...
    Type In: "~/Library/Printers"
    Delete All Folders Named Kodak
I'm going off memory, so If I forgot something let me know.

  • Aperture 2.0 Upgrade WARNING - Network Libraries No Longer Accessible

I just upgraded Aperture 1.5.6 to Aperture 2.0 and can no longer access any of my Aperture libraries.
I'm using Aperture on a MacPro workstation running 10.5.2 connected to an Xserve AFP fileserver running 10.5.2 connected to an Xserve RAID via Fibre Channel. I've been using this same exact configuration with Aperture 1.5.6 and earlier for about a year with no problems.
Upon upgrading to 2.0, I went to launch one of my libraries. Aperture notified me that the library needed to be upgraded to 2.0 and I selected "Upgrade". Here's where it went bad. Aperture 2.0 returns an error message saying "Aperture cannot access this library. To use this library, make sure it is on local disk and file permissions are set correctly."
I checked my file permissions and everything is good. I called Apple support and told them the situation, asking in somewhat disbelief if Apple was actually saying that only locally attached drives will work with Aperture thus requiring users to drop another 15-20K for another RAID to be just attached directly to the workstation. The support person told me that it appears to be the case with Aperture and they weren't sure why my configuration had worked without problems before.
If this is in fact true, how Apple could create a product which uses TBs of storage for high volume photographers shooting in RAW and does not allow the use of network storage strikes me as a bit ridiculous and in complete ignorance of some of the demands of how high-end pro users work.
The case is being escalated through Apple support but the cautionary tale here is do not upgrade to 2.0 if you use network storage and make sure to make product requests to Apple to support this essential feature.
For the moment I'm left with uninstalling 2.0 and going back to 1.5.6.
If anyone has any nuggets of wisdom or workarounds on this issue, they'd be greatly appreciated as I'm not to hear back from Apple for at least a few days.

So are you saying that you have a library file with the images imported into it (not referenced) sitting on a fileserver on your LAN that you can access from Aperture on your desktop machine?
With the problem I'm running into I can't even create a brand new library file on the fileserver from Aperture but it works fine on a local disk. This rules out the possibility of it being isolated to a damaged or unrecognizable library, I would think.
I'm going to try some of the other ideas listed here over the next couple days and will post the results but what I'm afraid of is that there is something in 2.0 that actually recognizes it as being on a fileserver as opposed to a local drive and cuts it off. While this may not have been supported in 1.5.6 and before, it did work and reliably from my experience.
If this doesn't work or get fixed by Apple soon, having to manage an ever growing collection of multiple TBs of photos spread across more than 15 Aperture libraries and needing server grade HDs with RAID 5 for data protection and uptime, simply becomes untenable in terms of hardware costs and having to buy an entire other RAID just for a single workstation, which seems to be the only solution at the moment.
The only local drives I use are for scratch disks for when working with Final Cut Studio and even then all the other video files are managed on the RAID through the fileserver and it works fine with Apple's Final Cut Pro and DVD Studio Pro. I'm going to deploy Xsan later this year and possibly increase our Fibre Channel deployment to select video workstations but I have a feeling even this would run into Aperture 2.0's apparent limitations and the expense that requires only makes sense because of the bandwidth demands we have for video, this should not be an issue for still photography.
Has anyone worked with Aperture libraries over Xsan?

I upgraded my iPod touch software from 2.2.1 to 3.1.2 with the promise of tweaks and additional features. The one feature not mentioned is that internet connectivity is wiped out. Some online forums Ive checked prove that this is a worryingly common issue with this update, and yet Apple do not seem to be aware of it or have an official solution to it. It just seems a bit surreal that an answer can only be found on a forum for users. Like "Go work it out for yourself" I have contacted customer support twice explaining the problem. I was given a refund but no solution the first time, and second time a lengthy apologetic explanation that cuctomer support could not provide a technical answer, and links to iTunes support which displays answers to pretty basic setting up problems etc. I would simply like to revert to the original software my iPod came with, but Iam open to advice from Apple or anyone out there in how to get my iPod connected again. Someone must have susssed this out somewhere ?

  • Aperture auto-overwrote its library? HELP

I opened 'users' in the Hard drive, selected myself, then 'images' and there was the aperture library. I dragged it over to copy it onto an external hard drive, and a message came up saying: "Welcome to Aperture 2.1.4 Your library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of Aperture. Once upgraded, you will not be able to use this library with previous versions of Aperture." It turns out it was an old library from when I had been using the trial version of Aperture, six or eight months ago. I clicked quit, but the next time I launched my application of Aperture, I got the same message. The only options were "quit" or "upgrade" and I was getting tired of the 'quit' option. I clicked upgrade. Then it opened and the only projects listed were from my trial. I can't find where the last half year of data are stored, there is no other 'aperture library' on in my 'images' folder, and that old one was the only one that was there to begin with. So where are all my images? I'd hate to think that Aperture auto-overwrote all my projects simply because I was trying to back up my projects. I simply didn't realize that 'aperture library' would be a trial from two years ago, otherwise I never would have tried to back it up by drag-dropping it onto an external drive. There are several projects with hundreds of images in each- all MIA.

    Welcome
Unless you copied over the library in the finder somehow, it's still there somewhere. By default it's called Aperture Library and is placed in the Pictures folder.
Search the word "Aperture" or "library" in Spotlight or in the search bar of a Finder window.
