Aperture 3.3.1 frequently "Updating Library" when I quit Aperture

Since I've upgraded to Aperture 3.3 (now 3.3.1), Aperture frequently (almost 100%) spends time "Updating Library" when I quit Aperture.  This takes like 40 mins to do.  I've fixed permissions and repaired the library but no difference.
Does anyone else have this problem?  I was hoping 3.3.1 would fix this problem but it doesn't.  Next plan would be to rebuild the library but that will take a long time!
Jason

Sadly, you are on the cutting edge of the deployment of Aperture 3.3.x (along with many other posters here).  The answer to your unasked questions -- "What is going on, and how can I fix it?" -- is "We don't know yet".  Since you have upgraded to 3.3.1, and have let Aperture more than once run through whatever it is doing when it says "Updating Library" and it continues to update the Library for 40 minutes every time you close the Library, I advise you to go ahead with rebuilding the database.  IME, this rarely takes longer than 10 hours, and can be run overnight.
I have rebuilt Libraries many times and have never seen a Library damaged by the rebuild.  Nevertheless, you should have a complete and verified back-up before doing any maintenance on any Library.
Let us know what you do, and what the result is.  Thanks.

Aperture is repeatedly repairing its library
Upon the recent "update" from Apple concerning Aperture 3.4:
I installed the update on 9/20.
When I open my massive 1.16 TB Aperture library, I get this message:
Aperture has detected inconsistencies in your library.  Please click Repair to avoid any potential problems.
    Click Repair.
    Then this message:
    Repairing Library: Examining Library
    Then this message:
    Repairing Library, 1% Complete
Since then, Aperture has been repairing my massive 1.16 TB library for ~ 5 hours until it gets to 77% and then "Aperture Not Responding".
    I have to Force Quit.
Open Aperture again and then this message:
Restore Windows.  The application "Aperture" was forced to quit while trying to restore its windows.  Do you want to try to restore its windows again.
    Click Restore Windows
    Then this message:
Aperture has detected inconsistencies in your library.  Please click Repair to avoid any potential problems.
    Click Repair.
    Then this message:
    Repairing Library: Examining Library
    Then this message:
    Repairing Library, 1% Complete
Then, the cycle begins again until it gets to 77% in about ~5 hours
    Then "Aperture Not Responding".
    I have to Force Quit.
    And so on.
So, I deleted Aperture from hard drive
    Install Aperture 3.0 from cd/dvd
    Open Aperture...with new library.  Fine.
    Close Aperture.
    Open Massive Aperture Library
    Get this message:
Warning: The library in "Volumes/Libraries/ApertureLibrary.aplibrary" cannot be loaded because it is from a newer version of Aperture.
    Select Quit
    Close Aperture
    Update Aperture to 3.4
    Open Aperture with massive library
    This message:
Aperture has detected inconsistencies in your library.  Please click Repair to avoid any potential problems.
    Click Repair.
    Then this message:

    I have to Force Quit.
Of course I send the Report to Apple.  Every time.
And so on and on and on and on.  For FOUR DAYS already.
My Mac Pro has been a brick and unusable since it is hogging the cpu with this Aperture update.
Check back to the Apple Discussion Forums
    Get this message:
We'll be back soon.  We are busy updating Apple Support communities for you and will be back shortly.
Repeat all the steps above for 2-3 times per day for 4 days.
This morning, ran the Repair Library from 8:00 a.m. until 11:56 a.m., when I force quit.
    Rebooted computer.
Option + Command Click while opening Aperture.
    Repair permissions.
Repairing Library, Database.  That ran until 3:00 p.m. when it got to 77% again and we start the ground hog day all over.
    Quit Aperture.
Option + Command Click while opening Aperture.
    REBUILD Database, 3rd option.
    3:11 p.m. 9720 versions restored.
    4:19 p.m. 93000 versions restored
    5:46 p.m. 169936 versions restored.
6:30 p.m., at time of this writing, it is still at 169936 versions restored.
When Force Quit, Aperture is NOT showing up as Not Responding.  But...we aren't done yet either.
So, I have repaired permissions on my computer.
    Re-installed Aperture from CD
    Tried Time Machine
and rebuild library up the wa-zoo.  To no avail.
I have removed the plist items from permissions.
    Nothing so far has worked.
I'm sick and tired of spending the last 4 days rebuilding and not being able to use Aperture.
    I am extremely disappointed.
And this nonsense happened in April as well.
I am an Aperture Certified Pro. Aperture 2, Level 1.
    So sad...

  • Aperture 3.2 won't update library, won't load

Upgraded from Aperture ver. 2.1.8. When I try to open the upgraded version, I get the message regarding the need to upgrade the library.  Whether I check the box in the dialog or not, I get the message "The library in "/Users/sharedlAperture Library.aplibrary" cannot be upgraded."  and it quits, so I can't even open Aperture. I have tried:
    1) the instruction to start Aperture with Option and command pressed, and nothing changes (same sequence of dialog boxes)
    2) reinstalled Aperture after deleting the software
    3) repaired permissions etc using DiskWarrior
    Still no luck...

What if you move that library out of the shared folder and into the Pictures folder in your user account?
And what version of the OS are you running?
I'm assuming you meant 2.1.4 for the version of Aperture...

  • Aperture 3.01 Crashing on updating library

This all stems from my G4 MacBook 17" being stolen. My Aperture programme was on the laptop but luckily my library was on my office hard disc. This has a mixture of imbedded files and referenced files on a variety of media - CDR', DVD's and hard drives.
Laptop has been replaced with a new MacBook Pro 17" this week and loaded with an upgrade for Aperture 3 and Final Cut Express 4.
Aperture has been updated to 3.01 via software updater.
Aperture will run with the sample library but after upgrading my main library which went fine everything was OK until i quit and restarted the next day. It then crashes 30 sec's after starting and restarting continuously the same repeats itself.
I have created a new empty library and imported the updated library into it and again all is ok until I quit and restart, then back to crashing after 30 sec's.
The sample library after all this opens and works OK.
This is very frustrating as all my work is in the library and I am at a standstill.
    Help!!

It seems that the problem is something inside that library itself. Make sure you have a back up. Then launch Aperture while holding the command and option keys. In the resulting dialog box read what each option does and choose Repair Database. ( I doubt its permissions, but you could try that too.) This will take a while perhaps hours depending on the size of your library.

  • When going from Aperture 2 to 3 and managed library to an existing Aperture 3 referenced

I am having to move several 2 TB Managed Aperture 2 Libraries to a new drive because the drives they are on are full and cannot be upgraded. I am copying them over to a new 4 TB drive and can either export the images out of the managed Aperture 2 Libraries or should I, once they are on the new drive, upgrade the "Managed" Libraries to Aperture 3 then export the images. I have been using Aperture 3 for about a year and have about 7 TB of images in an "unreferenced" Aperture 3 Library which is where ultimately I want to be able to access the old images.
Also what is the best way to export them out to maintain the integrity of the "Project/Folder/Album" structure I use.
And finally, is there a theoretical limit as to how large the Aperture 3 "Unreferenced" Library can be? My Unreferenced Aperture 3 Library is almost 200GB's. I have about another 6 TB's of images to add once upgraded.
    Thanks for your help!!

I have been using Aperture 3 for about a year and have about 7 TB of images in an "unreferenced" Aperture 3 Library which is where ultimately I want to be able to access the old images.
If I understand you correctly, you want to create a consolidated single aperture 3 library on your new 7TB drive.
And now you have a small aperture 3 library on that drive and want to add the images from several Aperture 2 libraries, that are now on a different drive, that is filling up, correct?
Also what is the best way to export them out to maintain the integrity of the "Project/Folder/Album" structure I use.
To keep the integrity of your old projectaa and albums, your edits and tags, without losing the lossless workflow, I suggest to import your old libraries as libraries and not to export the images from these libraries to reimport them.
I'd do the following for each of your Aperture 2 libraries:
Do you still have Aperture 2 running, along Aperture 3, or can you reinstall it? Then I'd run the Aperture First Aid Tools on each of your old libraries to rebuild them and to ensure that they are having no glitches. Do that in Aperture 2, if possible. To launch the First Aid hold down the key combination ⌥⌘ and double click the Aperture 2 library. Then select "Rebuild".
Copy the rebuild library to your new drive.
Double click your Aperture 3 library to launch Aperture 3 on it and use the command "File > Import > LIbrary" to import the Aperture 2 library into the Aperture 3 library. This will maintain all your projects, albums, edits, metatdata tags.
Repeat for all your Aperture 2 libraries.
Before you delete any copy of your old libraries, check carefully, if they imported well.  And check, if your backup of the old libraries is current, before you do the rebuild in Aperture 2.

There is no limit to the size of an Aperture library, that I know of. For merging libraries by importng one into the other you will need plenty of free space.  See this: Aperture 3.4.3: Release notes
Scroll down to the paragraph "A note on upgrading your Aperture library" at the end of the document.
It might be better, to distribute your combined library over two drives. 6TB on a 7 TB drive might be problematic, because the OS may occasionally more free space to perform repairs and rebuilds.

  • Aperture running in Mountain Lion. Now when I start Aperture it asks me for a Serial Number . Where can I find this as it was a download and I have no packaging?

I recently purchased Aperture from App store and this was running fine until I upgraded to Mountain Lion. Now when I start Aperture it asks me for a Serial Number . Where can I find this as it was a download and I have no packaging?

I also have this problem! Mine is also not from the App Store. I had purchased Aperture 1, then upgrades for both version 2 and version 3. It's annoying as it is, but I also have to enter my previous serial number as well since it was an upgrade.
Following this thread in the hopes that someone will have a solution.

  • Aperture 3.4 can't update library

I updated Aperture on my iMac and on my MacBook Pro (Both 10.8.2) to 3.4.  After the update Aperture opens and says it needs to update my Library.  While performing the lib update the process stops with the message:  WARNING: There was an error opening the database for the library “/Volumes/ApertureLib/Aperture Library.aplibrary”.  The only option provided is "Quit"  The same thing happened on both computers.  I've tried launching with Cmd/Opt to rebuild and/or repair the libraries without any success.  The repair/rebuild always crashes the app. When I launch with Opt key and try to create a new library, it fails to create one.  I've tried reinstalling Aperture only to end up with the same results.  I've done a permission repair and, of course, a reboot.  Something is terribly wrong with Aperture 3.4.

  • How to update library when creating book?

    G'day,
We have started to create a 40-page book. We have imported new pictures into the library since starting to create the book. However, the library at the top of the screen (where we have been dragging pictures) is not updated with the newly-imported pictures.
If we try to create a new book, all the pictures appear in the library of the new book. Is there a way to force the library of the partially-completed book to be updated?
    Thanks for your help.
    Regards,
    Doug
    dual G5 desktop, 2g RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

    Doug:
What you need to do is locate the photos in the main library and drag them to the Book icon in the Source pane. They will then show up in the image bin at the top of the book mode window.

  • HT3805 Aperture keeps asking me to register.  I register and it runs fine.  But then when I rerun Aperture, it asks for me to register again.

This is a replacement serial number that I am typing in.  I got it from a technician and was told to use it rather than my old serial number.  I would appreciate some help on this.

First of all, are you entering your serial number from an administrator account, or from a plain user account? If you enter the serial number as a regular user, Aperture cannot write the registration to the system library, and you will have to enter it again, when you log in again.
Also, you may have a corrupted "ProAppSystemID" file or Aperture cannot write to the System Library.
To stop Aperture asking for the serial number, first check, if you still have an old file "ProAppSystemID" in your System Library.
    Quit Aperture.
Go to your MacintoshHD and open the folder "Library", then "Application Support", then "ProApps".
Remove the File "ProAppsSystemID" to the Desktop, if it exist and restart Aperture.
Reenter your serial number, hopefully for the last time.
Sometimes Aperture writes this file to a temporary directory, when it cannot write to the Library. If the above does not work, look at the temporary directory /tmp
    Use the Finder's "Go" menu
Go > Got to folder    and  enter /tmp into the textfield. If you see the file there, move it to its proper location.

  • Aperture and iPhoto - sharing the same library? Synchornizing libraries?

    Hi,
I would like to ask if it is possible to either:
    1. Have Aperture and iPhoto share the same library.
    2. Have the edits on one reflect in the library of the other (if it isn't possible to simply "share" the same one).
    Thanks.
My major concerns that keep me from going to Aperture and forgetting iPhoto altogether are:
    a. iPhoto has nice sharing capabilities (with Facebook, email, etc.) which I am not sure Aperture will have.
    b. iPhoto has good iLife integration (slideshows with iTunes music, send to iMovie, etc.)
    c. my photos have tags in iPhoto that I'm not sure would transfer to Aperture if I did the "import" process...

    1. Have Aperture and iPhoto share the same library.
No. Th Aperture Library is a much more complex beast than the iPhoto one. The two apps can shar the same photos though.
    2. Have the edits on one reflect in the library of the other (if it isn't possible to simply "share" the same one).
No. Neither is an "external editor" like Elements. Importing is a once-off thing. Once you import a pic to Aperture it never references the iPhoto version again - and vice versa.
It's tempting to think of Aperture as some kind of "iPhoto Pro". It's not. It's an entirely different application. When you edit a pic in iPhoto the apps preserves your original file and creates an entirely new file - the modified version. When you edit a pic in Aperture that doesn't happen. Your edits are recorded in the database and +applied live+ when you view the pic in the Aperture window. This is a very different way of working and the principle reason why the two apps don't - and can't - read each other's Library.
    a. iPhoto has nice sharing capabilities (with Facebook, email, etc.) which I am not sure Aperture will have.
You can email from Aperture in exactly the same way as iPhoto. There is a Facebook exporter for Aperture (though, given what Facebook does to photos, I can't imagine why anyone would want one) and there are lots of other exporters available as well. Search on MacUpdate.
    b. iPhoto has good iLife integration (slideshows with iTunes music, send to iMovie, etc.)
Aperture can do the same - and in the same way - if you set it to share Previews with iLife and iWork in the Preferences
    c. my photos have tags in iPhoto that I'm not sure would transfer to Aperture if I did the "import" process...
    They will.
There are some differences: No Face and Places features in Aperture, Aperture won't deal with video at all, you cannot order postcards and calendars via Aperture and Slideshows are better on iPhoto. But if you share the Previews with iLife, then you can access any of these features you want via iPhoto.
The best thing to do is download the Aperture trial and experiment with it.
    Regards
    TD

  • Aperture has detected inconsistencies in your library.

After upgrading to Aperture 3.2.1 and after reconnecting most of my files I keep receiving this message "Aperture has detected inconsistencies in your library." upon opening Aperture. Because I had to reconnect all files and I had the projects split out according to different days (project, project 2, project 3, etc), I merged all split out projects each.
Now when I start Aperture, it 'repairs' the datbase, but several previously merged projects are again split.
Any suggestions to repair the repair process is much appreciated

    something very strange happened:
after deleting all the sub projects and emptying the Aperture-trash, I quit aperture and restarted the program.
Again the message "Aperture has detected inconsistencies in your library." appeared
repair... and then in the side-bar all previously deleted sub-projects reappeared, but now together with the other 'previously-deleted--sub-projects'  and they were visiblie again as empty black boxes in the main viewer window when clicking on the side bar on <Projects>.
Deleting them, emptying trash, quitting Aperture and restarting Aperture gives again the warning followed by repair process
and the previously deleted sub-projects are there again!

  • Aperture 3 - stuck "Updating Library" Processing images

My Aperture 3 Library says it is Updating Library Processing 93,182 items. It gets stuck at 268 of 93,182 and stops. If I try to Export anything the Activity Monitor shows it is processing the Export, however nothing happens.
I have to Force Quit at this stage and then open Aperture.
I have tried the Option + Command on open and done all three options, however this does not seem to fix it.
This may also have something to do with not being able to view all of my images in iWeb photo browser.
    Any Suggestions?
On importing my Aperture 2 library I did a complete re-build of it and made sure it was as clean as possible.
    Thank you

I have fixed this problem....for now at least, I deleted A3 renamed library folders and system folders and anything else I could find that said aperture, then did another install and it all seems to work again and it kept all my adjustments etc...so I obviously didn't rename everything! Of course I did a superduper backup first, I was just so pi@#ed off with it not working. I manually down loaded the updates and have opened and closed several times and it still works. It did however work fine when I first installed it so I won't be surprised if it stuffs up again. Anyway at least it is working for now. hope this helps

  • Aperture updating library

When I went to quit Aperture 3.2.2 it suddenly began updating the library.  I have over 14000 photos so this process (which I can't cancel) has been happening for the last few hours.  I'm running current version of Lion 10.7.3 on a Macbook Pro 17" mid 2009.  I have 8 gb of ram.  Thanks for any insight.  This is CRAZY!

Are you sure it didn't say it was updating the previews? That would be  normal for Aperture on exit, updating the library should happen when you first open a library with a newer version of Aperture.
If you have just done a large import this will happen. If it is happening often you might what to change your preview settings in Aperture's Preferences.
Post back if you need more information,
    regards

  • Aperture Updating Library... 126,637 of 6,959,575

    Hello all,
I upgraded to Aperture 3.2.3 and got an unexpected "Recovering Library" when it first started. Well, it seemed to have worked, and I did some importing in Aperture. It also started doing facial recognition in the background. I let all the background stuff finish, and then yesterday I quit Aperture.
At that time, it popped up a panel/sheet saying Updating library... 1 of 6,959,575 (commas added by me). It had done Updating Library in the past so I didn't think much of it.
However, now, a day and a half later, it is only up to 126,767 of those nearly 7 million. It seems to be going at a rate of one per second. At this rate, it will take around 80 days to finish. Given that my computer is a MacBook connected to an external DroboPro, that means I'm stuck with a non-portable computer that I have to hope has absolutely no crashes nor power failures nor any other hiccoughs for three months. Clearly, this is unacceptable.
Does anyone have any ideas what's going on here and what I could do, please?
    Thanks,
    Doug

If you have not read and undertstood this, you should: http://photo.rwboyer.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/Aperture3Organization.pdf
This will tell you how to open the Library Package and determine how large your Masters, Thumbs, and Previews are.
    Some other thoughts:
How full is your system drive on your MacBookPro? If it does not have between 25 and 30% free space, then that is the first thing you have to fix. Similarly, I assume that you have run Disk First Aid or Diskwarrior against your system drive, just be be sure that it is not, for any reason, hosed. From your comments about Lion, I would guess that:
-- Your OSX installation has real problems; problems that probably rate a visit to the Genius Bar; there should be one near you in New York.
-- Your Aperture rebuild may be having problems with latency - possibly because the catalog of your system disk is damaged or your Lion install is damaged. Couple that with the slow speed of the Drobo and things may be timing out. I will admit that this is a complete shot in the dark.
Assuming that your 2 TB Library is Managed, that is that the 2 TB includes your masters, and that you do not have 2 TB of free space in your MacBookPro, then:
-- First relocate your Masters out of the Managed Library and put them somewhere on the Drobo. There re many, many threads on this Forum discussing strategies for doing this.
-- Move the Library (now without Masters) onto your fastest, emptiest internal drive.
-- Resync everything. A quick pass with iDefrag wouldn't hurt after this much file movement.
    Why lecture about backups?
-- Well, first of all you said that you had no backups.
-- Secondly, we are trying to diagnose a problem at a distance, on hardware that we cannot see. We can't really tell if your problem is with your Mac, Lion, the Drobo, or Aperture. Under those circumstances we could easily give really bad advice. The cyber version of the Hippocratic Oath (First, do no harm.) is to assure that backups are available.
    Good luck and best wishes.
