Aperture 3.3.1 lost functionality

Since the most recent upgrade I seem to have lost some basic functions, such as import capability. I am unable to see the whole window and would much prefer to drop back a generation. Has anybody else been having these problems? Any solutions?

One of the two recommendations made in this thread should resolve your interface problem.

  • Sidebar missing from iCal in Lion - seeking a third party product to restore lost functionality

Apple has removed the sidebar, the always-on list of calendars that required no click.
The shallow popover that appears only when clicked — obscuring part of the calendar before disappearing — is to me (and some others) an unacceptable substitute for working with multiple calendars, especially where calendars are grouped across multiple servers.
I'm aware of third party alternatives to iCal. (Most full-featured calendar interfaces do have an always-on full-height list of calendars. Probably the best known alternative to iCal is BusyCal.)
This topic does not seek alternatives; I do wish to continue using iCal, albeit in a way that is less frustrating than what Apple forces upon users of 10.7.
    This topic seeks:
a third party product that will restore lost functionality to iCal.
To any developer who reads this topic: please, I beg you, on my knees, submit your iCal sidebar app — or whatever you wish to call it — to the App Store as soon as you can. I'll gladly pay, and more than gladly help to test any pre-Store development version.
Other readers please note: whilst I'm extraordinarily frustrated by Apple's design decision, this is not an invitation to rant. Let's gain something constructive from this discussion.
If you wish Apple to restore the sidebar to iCal, as an option, then please:
submit iCal feedback to Apple, with your use case; explain why for you personally the limited disappearing popover is a poor substitute; explain how the sidebar will improve both (a) your productivity and (b) your appreciation of Apple's software.
Side note: no category includes iCal, so I file this opening post under Using Mac OS X v10.7 Lion.
    Thank you

    the new way
Many things in the new iCal are beautifully designed. I am certain that the new iCal will be enjoyed by people who use the new multi-session screen sharing for Mac OS on iOS (that should be a separate topic).
iCal's aqua popover default may be perfect for people who have only a handful of calendars.
    Critically
The new design fails completely to offer an always-on full-height list of calendars — invaluable when working with more than a handful of things.
The screenshot below, taken whilst evaluating BusyCal, shows a subset of my list of calendars (more than the average user, that's why an always-on list is so valuable). In shot: three accounts on a CalDAV server. I have other, lesser used accounts on other CalDAV servers. Also some use of Exchange servers. My own case is extreme but there's a guiding principle for a variety of use cases:
some users need to see the list of calendars all the time.
What's exmplified below has become impossible in iCal 5.0 (1535) in Mac OS X 10.7 (Build 11A511).
I plead with Apple, or a third party developer, to restore the sidebar list of calendars to iCal.
Apple's limitation is acceptable when the user has only two calendars —
    — but for some other classes of user, completely inappropriate.
The percentage of users troubled by the loss of functionality may be less than the percentage enjoying the popover, but that in itself does not reduce the trouble, the frustration.
The sidebar was present in 10.4, removed in 10.5. Many users of 10.5 complained.
The sidebar reappeared in 10.6. Removal in 10.7 is almost completely dumbfounding.
I would like to say, "give it time — the more you use it, the more it will be appreciated" but for me this is not true. For some weeks I tried to work with this build of iCal and the more I used it, the greater the frustration. I grew to avoid iCal.
In most ways the feature set of iCal is unequalled. Support for many standards is excellent. The removal of the sidebar is a blight on this brilliance.
I plead with Apple or a third party developer to fix this at the earliest opportunity. I want Apple iCal — but user-friendly, not crippled.

  • Why all gray in sidebar? Lost functionality!

I've just upgraded (? not convinced I'm seeing an improvement) from 10.6.8 to 10.9.3 and am very disappointed to see that everything in the sidebar is shown in shades of gray. I've used FolderBrander for many years to color code my finder folders and it was great that the folder colors also appeared in the sidebar in 10.6.8. I could group associated folders by color in the sidebar and that made for very rapid and accurate access deep into my folder architecture. I am mourning this lost functionality.
Could someone suggest how I could send this dissatisfaction along to Apple along with a request to restore colors to the sidebar?

As an update, that 3rd party program called SideEffects didn't continue to enable the colors in the sidebar to appear. What I find most interesting is that the original color designations ARE present, it's just that some additional code eliminates them from appearing. Seems like Apple should easily be able to give the user the option whether to stay with the insipid all gray theme with colored tags or to re-enable the highly functional display of colors in the sidebar in a window and in the sidebar in the "save as" windows. There's no reason that we couldn't have both the "tags" (apparently meant for people who don't use the folder hierarchy when saving files to enable them to rapidly find their files again) and the previous nicely colorful "labels". I see that the gray sidebar has been a complaint ever since OS 10.7 Lion, but that Apple hasn't fixed the issue through several major OS revisions..
I feel I've been punished for being very ordered in where I save files on my HD since I made extensive use of the tools provided by Apple in the past: I could color-group subdirectories on my HD within the sidebar to give me very quick access to different portions of the subdirectories I'd made within my Documents folder. I made less use of labels, but also found them to be superior to tags for how I do use them. I have found tags to be of no value to me, at the expense of the loss of something that was of value. I sure hope that Yosemite corrects this — but I’m beginning to have less faith that Apple is even listening to its customers — except for those who use the iOS and not the Mac OS.

  • Lost Functionality !!! Have both 3.6.13 and 4Beta 9,10,11

    Lost Functionality !!!
I installed a number of add-ons before installing Firefox 4 Beta 9 and now I have lost much functionality! I have tried to disable many of the add-ons.I even uninstalled 4 Beta 9 after the beta 10 upgrade was added and went back to 3.6.13 but to no avail.\I am afraid that I am going to have to uninstall the whole mess and start over but I am on a slow dial-up ISP and that is prohibitive because of time concerns. This is one of the main issues : I hover over most but not all links with the cursor and it highlights the link button but when I left click nothing happens and I have tried everything that I can think of so I do not know if it is one of the add-ons or a different problem. I will have to go through my back-ups and see if i have saved a copy of 3.6 somewhere unless someone has an answer to this issue

Have you tried creating a new Profile?

    Crayolla,
Try doing a SMC and PRAM resets. Sometimes it takes 2-3 attempts for them to work so be a little persistent if they fail the first time.
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • Lost functionality with Leopard...

    Lost functionality with Leopard upgrade....
1 - AOL for Mac OS X (10.3.7) application: can't access email addresses when writing mail and can't attach files.
2 - Canon's MP Navigator (2.2.2) won't batch scan documents with MP830. Worked fine with Tiger.
3 - Can't mount USB hard drive attached to my airport extreme and when I try the extreme goes offline and I have to restart it.
How about you all. I only used 'em all the time.

    I have the same problem.
After upgrade from my Mac Pro to Mac OS X Lion yesterday, the same problem happened described by danhalli.
No  connection to the printer over 2101nw. The MAC gets all information if an other computer makes a connection to the print server, so the communication works,  however connection cannot be established.
There was no way to fix it. complete new installation from Printer Software or wireless  HP Print Server did not help.
Important:  all other computer in the network are working fine with the connection manager (MAC and Microsoft PC´s)
All MAC computer are working fine  with the SW 10.6.8 . The  SW 10.7.2 does not work I hope it will be fixed soon. If you can not print, it takes a lot of time !!!!

  • HP 2600n Not Printing Correctly and Lost Functions

The 2600n has lost the following functions with the HP/Apple update based on my normal use. Note that all of these were functioning prior to update.
    1. Double sided printing not selectable; no double sided printing available
    2. Cannot print 2 pages on a single sheet in draft; result is a print that is unreadable
In addition to the above the menu for the print has been rearranged in a way that makes it less easy to use. For example there is now an extra step to select draft (600DPI).
+How do I get rid of the download and install of this update and revert back to the old version which worked+ (for me and others it now appears).

Thank you to those who replied. I fixed this problem by deleting all the downloaded software and other software related material from the HD. I removed everything. I then proceeded to treat this as a new printer and used the HP site to download relevant software and driver for the 10.5 version. Contrary to popular opinion this printer will work on 10.6 - 10.6.3 using the 10.5 driver and software.
I did note that when setting up the printer in system preferences I had to select the previous version of the driver for HP. The update was still on the HD despite my (I think) thorough removal of all items HP (except scanner).
The printer is now functioning as before. I have complained to HP in two different formats who still say the printer is not supported by 10.6 despite it being clearly listed to the contrary. I also told them the new menu window was terrible. To no avail I'm sure but at least I informed them. As should others if they are having any problems.
    Thanks again.

  • Load GPS log into Aperture : why altitude is lost ?

    Hello,
I was trying to get rid of the external programs I used to join GPS information to my photos by replacing them with the "places" function of Aperture.
After a bit of headscratching due to poor results, I found a Feb.2010 discussion where user mvanderbilt posted this :
    --- quote ---
This is how I got Aperture 3 to assign correct locations to my photos using a GPX file (in my case, from a Garmin GPS device)
    1) Import the GPX track data. You should see a purple line on the Places map.
    2) Pick one of the photos in a project for which you know the location.
    3) Drag that photo onto the correct spot -- Aperture helps you by showing the difference between the photo time and the GPX time. The clock on either of those devices may be off, or in the wrong timezone, and this first photo placement calibrates the timing for the rest
    4) After you choose the location Aperture 3 will ask if you want to assign the locations of the other photos based on time. Click on "assign location" and the rest of the pictures will be placed relative to the location of the photo you located in step 3.
I wish the manual was more clear on this. It took a while to figure out what Aperture was doing, and my photos were often assigned to incorrect locations (but in retrospect, Aperture was doing what I told it to do).
    -- unquote --
Well, tried with these instructions and apparently now everything is fine but........ where is the altitude data ?
I mean, my GPS logger duly write in its NMEA0183 file latitude, longitude AND altitude : why Aperture seems to recognize only latitude and longitude and NOT the altitude ?
I am sure of the logger because if I still use GPSPhotolinker all data are correctly transferred so, either I'm still doing something wrong or Aperture do not recognize the information.
    Any hint / help ?
Many thanks to everybody & have a nice day.
    Marco

Writing the elevation data is quite simple, so I do not understand why Aperture is not able to do it.
Personally I think the best software available out there is Exiftool, and if you want  a more user friendly application that uses exiftool and does a good job at geotagging, try photolinker
    G'day jgcmac
I've been trialling photolinker to add geotagging data to images before importing into aperture. It's really good however the altitude data won't show up when manually tagging the images. Does this only work if you've got a log file (GPX) from a data logger?

  • Lost functions for excel

I receive files from my boss and I need to edit them using my computer. The problem is that I use Numbers, and he uses Excel. Formulas and functions get lost and get miscontrued during the process, so it inevitably leaves me sending back the file with missing or incorrect formulas. Are there any drivers or extensions I can download to help me out with the converting from excel to numbers? I hate sending back unfinished work.

    Jerry,
Perhaps I misread the OPs text.  I focused on the line:
he problem is that I use Numbers, and he uses Excel.
Which leads me to believe the problem is in importing and export between Excel <--> Numbers NOT between version of Numbers.

  • Flagging a photo - lost function

I used to be able to click in top right hand corner of a photo and it would flag it. Somehow I have lost this along with the star rating at the bottom left hand corner. Any suggestions as to what I can do to get these back. Thanks

This would be better posted in the Aperture forum.
But that said, you want View->Metadata Display->Viewer->Show Metadata (or Browser->Show Metadata).  Try the U and Y hotkeys (and when you can see data, hit shift-U and shift-Y to toggle beteen more and less data).

  • Lost functionality in keyboard and mouse in Snow Leopard

    Hi,
Since installing Snow Leopard I have lost the following functions:
"enter" key on number pad not working
scrolling horizontal w/mighty mouse not working. scrolling vertical with"nub" is superfast. System Pref's no help
Can't print using "Command" "p" in text edit.
I have tried the Combo 10.6.1 updater again but no luck.
    Anyone else having these problems?
20" iMac 2008 Intel, thin alum keyboard.

Just a thought: Adding your problem, which is different from the original posters' (he's using an Apple Keyboard and probably had OS issues), to a thread that has been dead for a couple of months is not the best way to get help.
I'd start a new thread that mentions your keyboard brand in the title, and a complete description of how you installed SL and what you have done (as far as permissions repairs, update reinstallations, keyboard vendor support statements) to solve your issue already.
Who knows, others that are using the same keyboard may recognize the problem and may know a solution from the thread title, plus you will have people working on your problem, not the original posters' (he never posted back, so I assume he fixed his problem).

  • Lost Function key access to hardware features.

    Hello,
I recently upgraded to Vista SP1 and I just noticed that i lost the ability to use my F keys to change volume level and screen / keyboard brightness in Vista.
I have also noticed that the application in the system notification area that controls this does not appear to be running.
Does anyone know what is the name of the application and where it is located on the HD?
I have been trying to drill through my HD to find it but I have not been able to locate the program that controls these features in Windows.
    Kind Regards,

I have resolved my own problem:
Sorry for the post, but it may help others that loose this functionality.
The file you need to move to the startup folder is located in the following location:
    C:\Program Files\Boot Camp\KbdMgr.exe
Once I created a shortcut for this in my windows startup folder, everything returned back to normal.
    Hope this helps someone!

  • Lost function key special functions - flash cards?

I seem to have lost the function key special functions which I think is related to flash cards. The function LED illuminates but pressing a function key has no effect (brightness, hibernate, monitor switch etc.).
How can I restore the function. I can't find anything under Toshiba Assit utility.
    Thank you
    Richard

    Hello Richard
When you press FN button the Flash Cards should be shown at the top of the display. If nothing happens you can try to restart Flash Cards. This option you can find under START > All Programs > TOSHIBA > Utilities > Restart Flash Cards.
Please try it. If this will not helps please restart your notebook. Be so nice and post the result.

  • HS-1200 Creative Konsole Starter: lost functions

My Creative Konsole Starter lost the function to create and surround sound.
All other functions are still available. Does someone have an idea how this could happen? And,what is more important, how I will get the function back. (I'd like to take the option of reinstalling as the last choice)
By lost I mean the function just disappeared. It is not longer listed in the options of the Konsole Starter. Still remaining is the option for the X-Fi Crystalizer.

  • Lost Functionality From '08 to '11 / Moving To Picasa? Your Stories

I recently lost my G5 DP after 6.5 years of great service. I am on an iMac now, loving 90% of it, but I spend a lot of my time in iPhoto and I am feeling sadly short-changed in '11 comparison to '08.
    Side-By-Side Comparison
Viewing photos side by side in full screen mode to compare them was a favorite feature of mine in '08 that seems to have been pulled from '11. Am I missing something or is it actually gone?
    Genuine Full Screen Mode
Full screen mode in '08 meant seeing the photo stand alone on a black background, which is a great feature. Sadly, this also seems to have been pulled from '11 and I am wondering again if I am missing something and this is there and I am missing it or if it truly is gone.
    More Right Click Features
Right-click (option-click) on photos seems to be all but useless now in that it only allows you to flag, trash, rotate or rate (and basic edit of cut/copy/paste). Am I misremembering '08 having better right-click features?
Click On A Large View Photo To Drag To A Photo Album
This is one I very much miss. I can click on a large photo when viewing it and drag it to a photo album. And I can't right-click and add to a photo album either. I can either view in thumbnail mode and drag it over or... well, nothing else. Even when I am viewing a large photo with the tiny thumbnails underneath, I can't even click on the thumbnail of the photo I am viewing and drag it to the photo album. I quite like photo albums for quit sorting of stuff to upload to share to family and this method of only having a single way to add photos to an album seems unusually restrictive.
    Aperture
I noticed that Aperture is now advertised view the iPhoto drop down menu, and I am wondering if these features above have been pulled from iPhoto and included in Aperture. Not that I would buy Aperture to get them, mind you, in that doing so would make me feel a little bit cheated.
    Picasa
I would love to hear from folks here who successfully moved from using iPhoto to using Picasa instead. I like a lot of things about iPhoto, but I find Events almost entirely useless and more annoying than anything else (it insist on being the top dog in the navigation list, and I hate that iPhoto won't let me change that since I much prefer the regular pictures list as the primary category to sort by). Faces is also mostly an annoyance to me in that it doesn't do anything automatically very well. Add these to my seeing some of my ease-of-use from iPhoto '08 lost to progress and I am seriously wondering if it's time to just jump ship altogether to Picasa.
Is there a good way to use Picasa and iPhoto in conjunction with each other?
Thanks to everyone. Genuine, non-snarky, non-condescending responses appreciated.

Other folks have commented on the Side by side, Full Screen and dragging to an Album queries. (Flagging might help there instead).
IPhoto menu -> Provide iPhoto Feedback for feature requests and comments to the developers.
The Contextual menu option are moved elsewhere - which means they can be assigned keyboard shortcuts.
These same features work in pretty much the same way in Aperture. They wouldn't be a reason to move there - there are reasons, just those ones ain't it.
Is there a good way to use Picasa and iPhoto in conjunction with each other?
There are ways built-in to Picasa, but rather than use the API's created by Apple for linking to iPhoto, instead Google have created hacks for the job. The downside to this is that anytime iPhoto is updated even the smallest change to the Library will lock Picasa out until the hack has been updated.
    Regards
    TD
