Aperture 3.3 - The Previews mechanism appears to be entirely broken.

TL;DR: In Aperture 3.3 are your Previews in Aperture there when they shouldn't be, and not there when they should?
Try confirming this:
I created a new Library with a couple of small albums for testing.  The Previews folder in .aplibrary is empty even when New Projects Automatically Generate Previews is on, Maintain Previews for Project is selected, and when I go to the photos and select "Update Preview" I get a message saying the Preview is already up to date.  When holding down the option key and doing a Generate Preview, I still get nothing in the Previews folder, regardless of how many photos I do this with or what resolution/quality I have my previews set to.
On the other hand, if I turn off New Projects Automatically Generate Previews, deselect Maintain Previews for Project, and select photos and then "Delete Previews", I'm still able to drag photos outside of Aperture (and get the plus sign as well as count of photos), and they copy to the Finder as well as other apps in full resolution. Additionally when I go to iTunes, it will sync all of the items in the Project even though I've done all of this to kill off Previews (and there are no previews in the aplibrary/Previews folder).
I should note that I'm not doing anything weird here.  For example, I only *looked* in .aplibrary when things weren't working and would never move or mess with anything in there directly.
This is a double problem and pretty serious:
1) Previews functionality is gone
2) Syncing with iOS devices can't be done using just the Previews, meaning it will sync everything, when combined with the Stacks Pick bug, this is a nightmare.

Hi,
I think your issue is related to the buggy behaviour I described in this thread:
Aperture 3.3 Bug? Dragging to external editor can modify the original
My suspicion: Aperture 3.3 simply, clandestinely does not create previews, if the original image size is smaller than the pixel size for the previews.
What are the sizes of the images in your project compared to the preview settings?
If images do not have previews, because Aperture did not create them, then I found that Aperture passes the mster instead (or a copy of the master, if you drag to the desktop).

Léonie

  • Aperture 3: low quality preview images

I don’t know if it's just a problem with my (new) Aperture Trial library or if it's a Aperture 3 bug:
The preview images Aperture 3 (trial) creates from raw files (in my case NEFs) are different from the JPEGs exported using the same JPEG settings.
I get the impression that the preview images don’t use all the adjustments applied to the raw files. They don’t have the moire reduction applied. The preview images of high ISO images have color noise, the exported images don’t have that color noise (the moire and noise settings of raw fine tuning are applied to the exported files but not to the image previews).
As the preview images are used for the Finder media browser, iLife, iPhone/iPod touch picture sync and other things the lower quality is not acceptable for me.
The preview images of Aperture 2 are identical to the exported JPEGs from Aperture 2 (using the same settings).
I use Aperture 3 Trial with a new trial library and a few hundred raw images just to test Aperture 3.
I already erased all preview images and rebuild the previews. I deselected using the embedded JPEGs from the raw files and I let Aperture rebuild the miniatures.

It seems that Ap2 syncs the previews to the iPhone... you have to clear the previous cached previews before it will load higher quality previews... anyhow, here is what I did... and photos look better on my iphone (not feeling motivated enough to verify if it is the same quality as iphoto sync)...
1.) change Ap2 prefs for "limit preview size" to "don't limit"...
2.) select all the photos in the album(s) you are want to sync, right click (ctrl click), and select delete previews...
    3.) sync your iphone again...
if that doesn't work directly, you might need to uncheck sync photos to delete all photos on the iphone, but the ultimate goal is to ensure refresh with the higher quality previews...
Hope that makes sense or gets folks in the right direction... Apple really needs to put a check box in future version of itunes to sync full quality or something...

  • Everytime I open Aperture, the main photo appears in black

    Hi
I don´t really know what I was doing with my aperture but something happened since I started editing some of my photos.
And everytime I open aperture in the split view, the main photo appear in black&white while the rest of them are fine ( I mean in color)
    How can I fix???

Your saying that the main image is in B&W but the previews are in color?
Check that View->Onscreen Proffing is off

  • HT5132 The pop up appears when I open aperture, I do not have a mobil me account with photos and the sync never seems to start and the dialogue box will not go away. How do I get rid of it?

When I open aperture a pop up appears that tells me that my mobil me photos will be moved. When I click OK, nothing happens and I have left it for hours. I can not get rid of the pop up and I can not get out of aperture. I have to force the computer to shut down. Any thoughts?

Quit Aperture - force quit if necessary (or try this:
If Aperture is unresponsive, how to avoid force quitting?
Launch Aperture again. When the panel appears, press the "Learn more" button, not o.k.
Then use the "File > Web Accounts > Manage Web Accounts" menu entry from Aperture's main menu bar and remove "MobileMe" from the list of accounts in the accounts pane by pressing "-".
If the above does not work, disconnect the internet (Wi-fi, Ethernet, whatever you have), before you launch Aperture again. Now the panel should no longer appear.
Also sign out of MobileMe in the System Preferences Mobile Me tab, to stop the panel to appear again.
    Good luck

  • Can I slim down the size of the Aperture Library by moving the Preview files elsewhere?

    Hi all,
I have an Aperture library of almost 20,000 photos, dating back to around 2007. Almost all the master images are stored on an external drive (backed up of course), with only my recent and 'in progress' masters being stored in the library itself. Previously I have had my library split up into one library for each year, with the older years libraries being stored on the external drive where the masters are, in order to keep the size of my 'current' library down. So my current library, stored on my internal SSD, contained only photos from this year and last year, and only a few of the masters for these images. Confusing? Sorry!
Now, I recently decided to consolidate the libraries into one huge library, because it was annoying to have to switch between libraries to find older photos when I wanted them. I did this, leaving all but the recent masters on the external drives (referenced). I thought that the size of the main library would remain reasonably sized, since there were no extra masters being moved into it. However, the library has grown massively - up to over 70GB, which is huge when you consider it's on a 128GB SSD which is also my startup drive.
I'm pretty certain the reason for the huge size increase is that the Previews for all the older images are stored in the Library file, rather than anywhere else. This makes sense - they are previews, they're supposed to be able to be viewed with the external drives disconnected. So my question is this. Am I able to change the location of the preview files to be on my OTHER internal hard drive (non-SSD, much larger), so that they're still available without the external drives, but are not cluttering up my startup drive. And, if not, what should I do!?
    Thanks a lot

Glad it worked, but permit, if you will, some observations:
-- Bloated Previews are a known Aperture bug, which came and went  within a few updates in Aperture 3. Getting them back to the proper size is simply a elegant step to take.
-- A Preview set to your largest screen size and a quality of 6-8 should be all but indistinguishable from the Master at 72-100 dpi screen image. (Not print resolution.) I REALLY doubt you are going to loose any quality.
-- While using a symlink to stick the Previews on a HD is clever, it may also defeat the whole purpose of using your SSD. Previews are read a lot and are, I suspect, used for all adjustments at less than full resolution. (N.B. I could be VERY wrong on this.) Thus, depending on the amount of RAM on your Mac, you could end up reading and rereading your Previews over a slower link and doing this a lot. You own use will quickly determine if this is an issue or not.
I have blathered on, at length, about what I think matters for size and speed here: https://discussions.apple.com/message/17959625#17959625. Some of this may be of use.
I went through a lot of these issues when I tried to fit everything on a 128 GB SSD, so I know some of the issues you are facing. As I noted before, you really only need a Library (minus most Masters) of about 30 GB and that is with large, high quality Previews.
I actually took the SSD out and stuck it in an ancient MacBookPro (in preparation for a trip to Blighty this summer) and have not noticed a huge drop in Aperture speed. (I do miss the speed of applications launch, restart, however.) One thing that I did find that made a small, but nice difference, was keeping all of the Masters on a separate, dedicated drive. Once defragged, etc. that was very fast. Don't know if you could achieve the same results by partitioning a larger drive, but it might well be fun to find out.

I was using Aperture (3.4.1), when he appeared a notice that asked me to stop the Mac with the power button. When I restart Aperture no longer opens and the following message appears: There was an error opening the database for the library "/ Users / Andrea / Pictures / Aperture 3 Library.aplibrary."
How can I solve this problem?
    Thanks

After a system crash your Aperture Library may be corrupted, because Aperture may not have been able to finish the ongoing database transactions.
Have you tried the Aperture Library First Aid Tools?
Aperture 3 User Manual: Repairing and Rebuilding Your Aperture Library
Try "Repair Database", and if this does not help: "Rebuild Database"

Can anyone please tell me how to stop email previews from appearing on my screen. I have turned off the preview option in settings on both my ipad and iphone, but they still keep appearing.  Thanks

works ok on mine - (5, 7.1.1).  Try again.  with previews set to none, mine shows the sender and the subject line only.  (you cannot get rid of the subject)    with the other settings, you get the sender, subject line and however many lines you selected.

After loading the latest Aperture 3 update, aperture will not load and it appears to have corrupted 10.6.7. and now appears to be missing from the computer and my administrator status has changed to standard.  Update Software says I need to do update to 10.6.7 which I can't do because administrator privileges are gone.   I didn't back-up with Time Machine ,BAD, but I have all files backed-up on another hard drive.  Should I just reformat and start over?  Any ideas or help would be appreciated.

PROBLEM SOLVED! For me at least!
Apple Support gave me the clue - I had run Migration Assistant, and it had obligingly replaced a system file (/Library/Frameworks/PluginManager.framework/Versions/B/PluginManager) with the equivalent from my old system.
I reinstalled 10.6.7 using the DVD supplied and all is well.
The moral is - don't use Migration Assistant.
Along the way Apple Support provided me with a link to download Combo update 10.6.7: this could not be installed on my iMac.
    Hope this helps.

Do your images show, if you disable the option "Do not import duplicates"? If yes, then check, if the images have already been imported, eg. using Photo Stream, if you are using Aperture 3.3 or later.

  • When I import  pictures from my Nikon some of the photos appear on their side and blurred.  When I click on them they load fine but still remain incorrect in the preview at the bottom.

In addition if I create a book, when I drag the picture they do not correct and remain as the distorted picture.  Normal pictures also appear blurred when dragged into the book box.

Have you tried to rebuild the previews?
Select all images, then ctrl-click and select "Update previews" from the pop-up menu?
On my notebook I did not notice such an import problem, but my notebook is  running Lion.

  • Will building the preview images kill Aperture performance?

So Aperture 1.5 will have the option to continually generate JPG preview images. This is how it gets the new "drag and drop iPhoto like ability" because when you do a drag out of Aperture to another app or desktop you are merely copying a file and not rendering a JPG file on the fly...
I cannot imagine what this will do to performance to have preview images being constantly generated in the background.. Everytime you make an adjustment to a version, the machine will be taxed with generating a JPG based on your preferences, almost like doing an export after each adjustment..
I am basing this on how much work it takes Aperture 1.1.2 to export images...

Preview-building won't get in your way, as it is designed to happen in the background, only when you are not directly interacting with the application. The moment your actions require CPU cycles, automatic preview-creation is temporarily paused and then restarts again when you're not working on images.
In addition, you have control over when and how previews are made. You can turn off automatic preview creation and then generate the previews on demand for only specific projects, or only for selected images. (For example, create previews only for your selects, not for the alternates or rejects in stacks).
If you need previews of certain images immediately, you can choose a command to generate the previews; this action becomes a high-priority request and is moved to the front of the queue so that the previews are made right away.
