Aperture 3.4.5 stuck on import after 15 hours

27" iMac 2.8 GHz Intel Core i5
12 GB DDR3 RAM
Imported several gigs of images from an external HD - RAW, jpg and TIFF. Aperture is still "importing" after 15 hours. Many thumbs not showing.
I checked whether images are imported by using "Show in FInder" method. Most are. Some I had to reconnect because Aperture lost reference to them in the Aperture image folder I designated for import. A lot of thumbnails are missing or not fully formed, and opening files that are properly connected is very slow.
Obviously something is wrong but I don't want to quit Aperture becasue Aperture moving the files rather than copying them, and I fear quitting will lose the files forever.
Suggestions?
BTW, many quirky issues with the update to 3.4.5. Lots of blank thumbnails that previously existed, some pre-update file thumbs look full of colored dots or zigzags, but they do resolve to full images after opening and waiting a bit. Ugh.

Update
Aperture crashed. I restarted with no real distasters, just annoyances. Thumbnail views now disappear even on images I just worked with.
Some projects have thumbnails OK in Project view but none in Split View.
One project that was importing when my issue happened has some color noise thumbs tha, when queiered via "Show in Finder", report "External volume this was imported from is offline". Not true. Never took those volumes online.
Question:
Do I delete the "bad", unconnected files from this above project and re-import from a backup folder with "Do not import duplicates" ticked? Should that solve the missing file problem?
However, what's up with the vagaries of thumbnails dynamically disappearing? Whatever I do doesn't seem to re-create them.

Pro Photographer. I have a Mac Pro Quad core 1 yr old with 12GB Ram. I import via 2 Firewire 800 card readers - A Lexar & a UDMR Reader.Only using them singly. System has 4 1TB hard drives 1. Applications, 2. Aperture Library, 3. Aperture Vault, 4 Time Machine
On a photo shoot, first CF card may download and complete in less than a minute but the next card with a similar number of images may take 10 minutes.
Sometimes if I swap card readers, this can speed up download but then everything slowly grinds to a halt.
I have closed down all other programmes, switched off Faces and Enable Gestures - switched off Look up places.
Situation driving me nuts as we shoot and view images with customers immediately after the session and download time effecting the amount of time we have to do this. Nothing seems logical as such a high spec machine should theoretically fly through this.

Have you upgraded your OS ans all your Apps to the latest Versions and also rebooted the system?
Turn on the Activity Viewer (Windows ->Show Activity) while importing, to see how Aperture is spending its time.
Also launch some tools from the Application -> Utilities folder:
launch the Console window, to check for diagnostics /error messages
launch the Activity Viewer, to see how much RAM and CPU time Aperture and other processes are using.
How much space is free on your system drive? And on the drive you are importing to?
If you find in the Activity Viewer, that Aperture is slow, but de facto using not much CPU time, then the problem may be a corrupted Aperture Library or corrupted preference files.
Try to import into a new, empty Aperture library and see if the problem persists.
If you have no problems with a new Library, try the Aperture 3: Troubleshooting Basics:

Start with repairing permissions and repairing the library.

Quit Aperture
Then disconnect from internet (WiFi, Ethernet, etc.)
Launch Aperture again.
In the Aperture Preferences Web Tab remove MobileMe.
After that you can connect again to to the Internet.
Probably the "Quit" button does not work. Then try to quit using the Terminal to avoid "Force Quit":
Launch the Terminal (from Applications > Utilities) and enter
killalll Aperture
If this does not work, use "Force Quit".

You haven't given us much to go on here. What exactly are you doing and what exactly happens when you try? Which specific version of each program are you using? (Go to Help>About...)
On a side note, a simple, brief thread title is all that's needed. Something like "After Effects Issue" would be fine. You don't need the full question there.

Hi,
Go to the ~/Library/Attachments folder. (well it should be a folder).
If it is not a Folder then rename it and create a New folder with the same name.
restart Messages.
Or if you have a Time Machine backup replace the Non folder item with an Original from just before the update.

Aperture 2 thumbnail quality grainy on imports

I am migrating to Aperture because it is lightning quick in managing with 1000s of images. I am particularly pleased with how it allows quick access to high-quality thumbnail images of photos in a large project. I should note, that my imports are referenced to folders elsewhere on the DB. I do not copy masters into the vault.
My issue: Aperture has variable/flaky treatment of imported project thumbnails. If I choose the Import icon arrow, the chosen imported folder photos show high-quality thumbnails. Conversely, if I chose the file menu option "Import Folder as Project", imported folder photos get grainy thumbnails--but then become high-quality IF I select individual photos, which then get properly rendered.
I generally like the "Import Folder as Project" method for importing folders because it is quick and it properly named the aperture project with the title of the referenced photo folder. The Import icon button requires several additional steps and is cumbersome for importing 100 photo folders from the HD, but it at least has the virtue of giving me what I want-which is high-quality thumbnails a la iPhoto.
Does anyone have an explanation for the different treatment of thumbnails? Program preference settings are same for both approaches, yet the thumbnails spit out by the imports are qualatatively different.
I suppose a variation on the above question would be, how to get Aperture to automatically generate high-quality thumbnails involving multiple photos? Currently the only option would be to manually select each photo one-by-one, which is impractical.

I just installed Aperture 2 on a PB G4 and 10.4.11:
it works and manage D300 and D3 raw...
The only problem is that trial version will not convert your previous 1.5 library (there is no option yet to upgrade in the Italy store).

i am afraid that if you force quit right now you will run into problems opening your library when you next try.
If it is at all possible (an I don't even know if this will work while iPhoto is running) open a finder window and navigate to the iPhoto Library folder.
Highlight the folder and hit Command D to duplicate the folder. I am hoping you can do this before any changes are made to the data files that might corrupt them when you force quit iPhoto.
Once you have the duplicate library, then you can see if you can Force quit iPhoto. You can do this if you see the "force quit" option when you click and hold on the iPhoto icon in the dock. You can also launch Activity Monitor and find iPhoto in the window and choose to force quit it from there.
What kind of camera do you have and how many images and or video clips are you trying to download. Sometimes iPhoto gets stuck on very large video clips and eventually they will download.

IMovie stops importing after 7 seconds or so

I am trying to import some video that is being passed thru my digital camcorder from a dvd. I have done this before several months ago but today it stops importing after about 7 seconds. I don't have FileVault turned on so that isn't the problem. Everything looks fine on my camcorder screen but iMovie just stops importing. HELP! Any ideas? Thanks!

Transports are getting stuck in import

Hi Experts,
I am importing transports, it starts the import and import sign comes. but transport are not getting imported.
the import sign remains there even after 12 hours. its happening for all the transports.
Import log says "Selection for Import"
Could you please suggest what could be the reason?

I am importing WPC web content (Transport package) (http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw70/helpdata/EN/46/77da3bb8036ef0e10000000a1553f6/frameset.htm ). Transport Package doesn't show up in pending imports after Package upload. I repeated the package upload. Still its not showing under "Pending Imports"
Anything else has to be done while importing a transport package (wpc web content).

Iomega Storcenter ix4-300d stuck at 95% after firmware upgrade

I upgraded my device after I got an email that there is a new firmware:
An update to version 3.2.10.30101 of the Iomega StorCenter ix4-200d software is now available
I installed the update but now it is stuck at 95% after rebooting.
Never had any problem before the firmware upgrade.
Any advice?

I recommend that you first power down the unit if the unit has not completed the boot process. Then re-seat all disks and try booting the unit again. Please do not try to access the web interface until the power led is solid white.
Next would be to try moving the internal disks to different bays to see if a different drive order wil allow the unit to boot.
If that does not help, LenovoEMC suppor should be contacted for more advanced options.

Can't import After Effects Compositions

When adding an After Effects Project the "Import After Effects Composition" window opens but no compositions appear. I haven't had any luck finding documentation about this problem. Seems to only affect After Effects, Premiere sequences still import with no problem. Any suggestions? Thanks.

It's possible that your firewall software is blocking the communication between After Effects and Adobe Media Encoder. See this page for a solution if that is the underlying problem:
