Aperture 3.4.5 to Lightroom Migration

I'll start off by saying that I couldn't find a specific/detailed current (most posts are from years ago or for different versions) answer anywhere, so sorry in advance if this topic has already been posted (I'm sure it has), and if so, please direct me accordingly...
I've finally made the decision to make the change to Lightroom from Aperture.
I'm currently using Aperture 3.4.5 with a managed library and had a few questions to ensure that the transition goes as smoothly as possible.
My questions are:
1. What is the best way to do execute the process (workflow)
2. Is there anything I should do in aperture BEFORE I start (besides making sure I have a backup)
3. In terms of editeds AND keywords I've assigned to certain photos in Aperture will they come over without incident?
Any additional information or resources that can be recommended even if it's to external sites will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

Started the App Store this morning and it showed that the above apps had updates available and I was able to update them all.  So all is good now.
That's good.
Now I'm having an issue with my Mail app.  My start up drive is an 120GB SSD so it doesn't have enough space to store my 16+GB mail file or my iPhoto library. When I was running Lion, I had these on an external drive and had an alias link to the external folder within the user Library folder. This worked fine. Now when I start Mail it gives me an alert box that I don't have privilege to access the external Mail folder and to use Info and update the access privileges for the folder.  I have done this but I still get the same message.  I ran Disk Utility and repaired the privileges on the startup drive. Still no joy.  Any suggestions?
Also, I've always got an alert from TextEdit when I've edited a txt/rtf file that it can't update the file because I don't have proper access privileges for the file, but it seems that changes are stored anyway.  ???
You'd better ask this part of the question again in the Mavericks forum. There are more experts for the basic MacOS X apps.

  • RAW files in Lightroom (migrating from Aperture)

    Hello,
I am an Aperture user that is thinking to migrate to Lightroom after the last announcement by Apple regarding its professional photo application.
I use to work with RAW files in Aperture and I would like to do the same with Lightroom. In this guide, in which Adobe explains how to migrate to its software, I cannot find any help about transferring RAW files to Lightroom (in my case, .NEF files by Nikon). Is it possible to do it?
    Thank you in advance, Valerio.

That app does not do it all for you automatically. It does some preparation in Aperture and duplicates your entire picture collection.
Valerio, Adobe’s guide does say you should simply import your files into Lightroom. However, they must be in regular folders - "referenced" rather than "managed". See my Moving from Aperture to Lightroom for more detail.

  • Need help with iPhoto Aperture Lightroom migration

Would really appreciate some advice on this last stage of the move from iPhoto to Lightroom, as Im sure getting my files into the right place is crucial.
Here is where I'm at right now:
I had an old iphoto (v8.3 or something) library with about 30,000 images on a macbook pro (late 2008) which I moved over to my newer iMac, to merge with an existing library of about 8,000 photos which I was managing with Aperture.
Per some advice I got on how to consolidate iPhoto libraries, I opened the old iPhoto library on my newer iMac running the latest iPhoto version, and then I honestly can't remember exactly what I did after that... but I got both libraries into one, and now I have all my photos merged and sorted into folders and projects, and all looks great. Except for one thing: its still showing up as an iphoto library in finder. There is no Aperture library file or folder anywhere. I guess I needed to "import" at some point, rather than simply opening the library?
My original plan was to get everything into an Aperture library before moving to Lightroom. Maybe it doesn't matter. My main concern before I make the move to Lightroom is keeping my newly organized folder hierarchy (with all projects and albums in tact). And I understand I need to change from managed to referenced library for this. So is it just as simple as "relocating the originals"?

Sorry, maybe I can rephrase my question:
My photos are already sorted into this structure, in Aperture, as a managed library:
    PHOTOGRAPHY (main folder)
    - PROCESSED
            GROUP A
            GROUP B
            GROUP C
            PROJECTS
                 PROJECT 1
                 PROJECT 2
                 PROJECT 3
    - WORK IN PROGRESS
            GROUP D
            GROUP E
            GROUP F
How can I make this into a referenced library?
I understand I need to select all my photos and then choose the "relocate originals" option.
    What comes next?

  • Aperture Phase Out, Lightroom Migration?

Since Apple is reportedly going to phase out Aperture (Per TechCrunch "“With the introduction of the new Photos app and iCloud Photo Library, enabling you to safely store all of your photos in iCloud and access them from anywhere, there will be no new development of Aperture,” an Apple spokesperson told TechCrunch")" does anyone know a good way to migrate Aperture's libraries to Lightroom?
    TechCrunch: http://techcrunch.com/2014/06/27/apple-to-cease-development-of-aperture-and-tran sition-users-to-photos-for-os-x/
    Adobe: http://blogs.adobe.com/photoshopdotcom/2014/06/apple-aperture-news.html
As best I can find, one can migrate Aperture files to Lightroom, preserving some keywords and EXIF, but losing all edits. For a library of thousands of photos, that would mean throwing away months and months of work that could never be duplicated.
Of course, the files can simply be exported as JPEGS, but then the advantages of non-destructive editing are lost. I don't know a way to export to the DNG format, nor export RAW files with edits.
Please tell me I am wrong and my Aperture library won't be frozen in time and I'll have to start over archiving every photo.
    Thanks /  jim

No reason not to hedge bets and make a move now. Even if the speculation that Photo can recreate your Aperture edits is true, you might not like the WAY it does it. Or other features. Or maybe you've got a new camera and Apple is behind on RAW (like mine). Or maybe you just don't wanna have all your photo edits in one basket.
I doubt anyone is gonna come up with an acceptable tool to import edits. We would have seen that already. But how often are you going back to those edits in Aperture? as opposed to re-editing? Even with some of my old photoshopped stuff and whatnot, and even though I have the tools to do so, some of the newer editing software is so good it's better to start over from the original anyway. And as noted, Aperture will be around for that. My copy is, even though I abandoned it quite a while ago. It's just an old tool you keep around.
So one strategy is that only new imports go into LR (although there are other choices). If you need a bunch of older stuff, you transition that. Otherwise you leave things be. In that situation, if I needed edits and/or embedded metadata, I'd export TIFFs into the finder folder where the masters were, writing metadata to xmp and/or jpgs as appropriate, and import into LR. Note that Aperture is still referenced those and can still find them. So you can either work forward from the TIFF, or redo the edits on the original.
What would be super useful IMHO would be a tool to export the metadata into jpgs and into XMPs for RAWs WITHOUT having to export. You wouldn't get edits, but location info, keywording, captioning, etc would be very very nice to have.
And that brings me to structure. The LR analogue to projects/albums/folders are collections and collection sets. How to replicate that for an existing group of folders, since it doesn't import? (Because LR just mirrors your filesystem folders, it's "import" (almost more like "show") function has no "import folders as projects" kind of deal.) For this  I used keywords, since they can be hierarchical, and can be written into the files.
So you when you export a project/album like "2014 Wedding Project/Ceremony Album" you keyword all the photos with that (in LR 2014 wedding project>ceremony album). That way you can find that structure in that form even if it was stored in a finder folder called ~/Pictures/Family Photos. And in LR it's easy to turn a filtered selection into a collection, or use a smart collection. This way you can preserve some of the structure you're used to seeing in Aperture in the LR collection set/collection tab. And if later synchronize another edit or metadata (a very handy tool for use on folders within LR), it can bring up updated metadata and import new files. And if they have the same keywords, you could use a smart collection based on those keywords to replicate "2014 Wedding Project" or whatever.

  • Aperture crashes on start up - after migrating from time machine

Aperture has been running fine for ages, but at the suggestion of the apple store ,to assess a problem with the isight, I did a clean install of OSX leopard and migrated all the data from the time machine. Now Aperture will not open at all and Final cut express wants its serial number again.

  • Lightroom Migration and Upgrade

I have Lightroom 3 on my existing Windows XP PC, and I now have a new Windows 8 PC that I want to migrate to.  As part of the switch I want to upgrade to LR4, so I am planning to buy an upgrade version of LR4.
Do I have to install LR3 on the new PC before I can install the upgrade licence, or is just having the existing serial number sufficient?
If I have to install LR3 first, what is the process for migrating it from one PC to another?
    Thanks

  • Aperture 1.1.1 vs Lightroom

Well, I started off using aperture, got sick of the slowness and then used Lightroom. Lightroom worked fast..... for awhile, then got mind numbingly slow with a large library! Now with the release of Aperture 1.1.1, Aperture finally works at a useable speed! If only it had the comprehensive and intuitive development tools of Lightroom. sigh.
I am curious to see if anyone here uses/used Lightroom, and what they thought of it compared to Aperture.

Well to me Lightroom has less bells and whistles, but I actually prefer the way the tool sets work better than apeture.
I feel Lightroom's levels, contrast, white balance and color correction tools are superior, at least to me, I find I have better and finer control of levels in Lightroom. I like the Lightroom library system better than the Apeture "package" routine.
I luv Apeture's stacking sorting features, and the Light table is great though on my iMac a little "sticky" sometimes, also batch processing of adjustments seems very easy in Apeture.
We'll see if Lightroom brings in a light table although their compare function does work pretty well. Also, I like using the second viewer in Apeture so I have the tool set and the photograph being worked on on the main screen and then the 2ndary has just the large image. With both screens nicely calibrated, its a very nice way to check the fine adjustments.
As you can see I'm experimenting with both. Up til 1.1.1 I've been using only lightroom, but I think Ap's update has been a big improvement in the speed and usability of the program. Also, I just bought a D200 so I'm taking more pictures on a shoot, particularly serial photos and the stacking/lighttable is very useful for picking my selects.
As I said I don't like having to duplicate the images to use in both, but I am loading into both programs at the moment until I really sort out what I'm going to use each for. The accessing images in place feature of lightroom is much more efficiant for me because than I can access also directly from Bridge and from and into CS2. Luckily I have plenty of HD space to play around with at the moment.

  • How does aperture 2 compare with adobe lightroom?

I realize aperture 2 just came out but feedback from anyone with experience in both aperture 2 & adobe lightroom would be very much appreciated
    Message was edited by: apeOrLr

I own both (Aperture 1.5x) and I can say they both have some very nice features. I prefer working in Aperture when I can. Here are a couple of differences that I think are important.
LightRoom has no support for multiple monitors. This doesn't seem to bother some people, but it drives me nuts. I would love to have my a 1:1 or fit preview open on a second monitor while I'm working. Aperture is great at this. You may want to avoid LightRoom if that sounds like something you would want for your workflow.
Another thing I like in aperture is the highlight recovery looks much nicer to my eye.
Like William Lloyd mentioned there is a lot of pre Aperture 2 vs LR comparisons out there... they may give you a good start. I'm sure lots of folks will be rushing to write up comparisons or 2.0 vs LR soon.
    Good luck!

  • I would like to migrate from Aperture. What happens to my Masters which are on a RAID array and then what do I do with my Vault which is on a separate Drive please ?

I am sorry, but I do noisy understand what happens to my RAW original Master files, which I keep offline on a RAID array and then what I do with my Vault which as all my edited photos ? Sorry for such a simple question, but would someone please help my lift the fog ?
    Thanks,
    Rob

    Dear John ,
Apologies, as I am attempting to get to the bottom of this migration for my wife ( who is away on assignment ) and I am not 100% certain on the technical aspects of Aperture, so excuse my ignorance.
She has about 6TB worth of RAW Master images ( several 100 thousand ) which, as explained, are on an external RAID drive. She uses a separate Drive as a Vault . Can I assume that this Vault contains all of her edits, file structures , Metadata, etc ?
So, step by step........She can Import into Lightroom her Referenced Masters from her RAID and still keep them there ? Is that correct ?
The Managed Files that are backed up by her Vault , are in the pictures folder of her MacPro, but not in a structure that looks like her Aperture library ? This means Lightroom will just organize all the Managed files, simply by the date in the Metadata ? Am I correct ( Sorry for being so tech illiterate ).
How do I ensure she imports into Lighgtroom in exactly the same format as she runs her workflow in Aperture ?  ( Projects, that are organized by year and shoot location and Albums within those projects with sub-locations, or species , etc ). What exactly do I need to do in Aperture please to organize Managed Files to create a mirror structure of Aperture on my internal Hard Drive ?
There are a couple of points I am unsure about in regard to Lightroom. Does it work in the same way as Aperture ? Meaning, can she still keep Master Files on an external RAID and Lightroom will reference them ? If the answer is yes, how do you back up your Managed ( edited ) work in Lightroom ? ( Can you still use an external Drive as a Vault ? ) . Will the vault she uses now be able to continue to back up Managed Files post migration ?

  • Best Setup, iPhoto 11 & Aperture 3 and Lightroom 3

As I use all three of these apps, as well as Photoshop CS5, I've been thinking hard how I want to set up all these apps. The first obvious issue is storage. It would be insane to keep three copies of my images, so the obvious choice is to store images in subfolders of the Pictures folder in my account hierarchy. Then have all three apps reference the images from there rather than copying the images into their own library structure. Would all agree to this or is there some hidden gotcha to this?
I know iPhoto and Aperture can share info back and forth. Is there a preferred way to set up what app gets images from or to another that you all would recommend? Can one app be the 'master' and the other two be slaves?
What would be the best bet, also, for importing the images to the master. The images are already in folders and subfolders according to how I would like them to be in the master app once the import is done.
Finally, is there a way to support a dual storage system, one where my folder structure is maintained, top level folders within pictures being the project, subfolders being the events, or whatever terminology the app uses, with a second structure using top level by year, sub-levels by month and day? Both systems in use together.

Aperture, Lightroom and iPhoto, to one extent or the other, all do the same job. The best advice is to pick one horse and ride it.
All three apps want to manage the files. Yes, all three can reference the same set of files too, but none can see or work with the processing of the other. So, the Lightroom version of the photo is different that the iPhoto one is different from the Aperture one. And, none can even see the other without some form of exporting.
Best analogy I can think off: Writing your novel in Word, Pages and TextEdit - one paragraph in each. It just makes everything more complicated.
I know iPhoto and Aperture can share info back and forth.
Aperture and iPhoto are entirely different applications that work in very different ways.
The only communication between the two is as follows:
Aperture is able to parse the iPhoto Library to allow it to import the contents while stacking the Originals and Modified versions, preserving metadata and so forth.
Aperture can share its Previews with the iLife apps, including iPhoto.
    That's it.
So, specifically, what interaction there is between the two is designed to facilitate migration from iPhoto to the more powerful app. After that, iPhoto has exactly the same relationship to the Aperture Library as, say, Pages or iMovie.
iPhoto has no knowledge of, and knows nothing of how the Aperture Library works. It cannot read the Aperture library.
EDIT: BTW: Lightroom has no knowledge of the other too at all. And Vice Versa.
Really, working with all three makes no sense to me. You'll be doing triple the work. It will unnecessarily complex and that's how you get data loss.
That and a dollar might get you a cup of coffee some places.
    Regards
    TD

  • Adobe creates Lightroom Plugin for Aperture

Glad to see Adobe has created a plugin to ease transition.  Guides have been helpful, but aren't as a complete solution as this may offer.  Unfortunately, it seems most users can't find a way to install it.
    https://creative.adobe.com/addons/products/3213#.VDgVnynCMox
Although if you have hundreds of thousands of images, this may not be up to the task.  Lets hope.

There are a lot of complexities, to be sure.  I just ran a test conversion on the entire library.
First thoughts?  We've been blessed with Aperture these many years.  Lightroom certainly has some capabilities when it comes to photo editing, but I can see why so many professionals have held out so long with Aperture.  There just isn't a better personal-level DAM.  I've been reading a book on Lightroom, and there are several limitations as far as manipulating and cataloging.  Definitely some neat features as well, but for the most part, not as versatile as Aperture.  I'm going to miss that.
I don't like the folder/collections paradigm.  Feel like I'm in a straight jacket.  But at least it gives me some versatility.  Based on testing, I figure I'll reference my masters as year/project, to provide some organization.   More than that, it gets difficult to move around within the browser pane.
The plugin has it's problems, but it did perform better than expectations.  Out of 40,000 photos, it managed to import all but 200 or so.  Oddly, many groupings the same Aperture project.  It did a good job of stacking images, but you don't see stacks in collections!  It also did find and migrate a bunch of duplicate JPEG "masters" that were presumably created as I've exported to Facebook and other projects.
One gotcha, you should create full-sized previews if you want those migrated, too.
The faces tagging doesn't work yet.  And much of my keywords were scrambled.  Certainly can pick up the pieces, but that endeavor will take several hours as well.  Lightroom won't make this very easy.  It seems a bit more cumbersome to navigate, filter, and sort, but perhaps that's just due to my lack of experience.
I only have 1400 stacks, so I figure I'll create a metadata reference for the "pick", flag them in Lightroom, then go through stacks one by one and restack them.  Shouldn't take more than a half a day.
Adobe support and forums just aren't very good.  Few people participate, even though there is a larger Lightroom community??

  • Can't find IPTC metadata after Aperture export into Lightroom

    Hi all,
I'm sure you've already worked through this pain, so maybe you'll have some insight for me:
I am exporting approximately 25,000 images from Aperture 2.1.4 and importing them into Lightroom 4.  I started working with my small projects of about 300 images to test.  From Aperture, I exported the Master files with the Sidecar (IPTC4.XMP) files.  [My masters are a mix of .jpgs and .NEF, and I read that the jpgs don't always carry the meta data through].  I successfully imported the master files into Lightroom and ran the "Read Metadata from File" command.  I also exported the keywords file from Aperture and imported those into Lightroom as well.
Prior to exporting, I edited one file in Aperture by entering "test caption", "test location", "test keyword", "test copyright" etc. into several of the IPTC fields.  These fields are NOT appearing in the equivalent Lightroom fields.  I checked the .XMP file (using text edit) and it does contain the correct "test values".  I am getting all of the EXIF metadata, but none of my custom values.
Is it as simple as not looking in the right place in Lightroom for my values?

    John, and Brent -
Yes, thank you, you were both right.  Here is an updated screenshot showing the image in both applications, with the metadata where I expected it.  The trick, in my case, was to follow "Method 1" in the link above, to write the IPTC data into the .jpgs.  I'll use the sidecar method for the .NEFs, probably.  Also, expanding the fields proved that the keyword was present.  I'm sure I can mess around with the Display Metadata options from Default to other things.  All well; heroes to the rescue!
    Regards,
    Grace

  • Process for exporting out of Aperture to import into Lightroom

I'm trying to convert a large library of images that is presently cataloged in Aperture 2.0 into a Lightroom 2.0 Catalog.
Aperture doesn't store the sidecar files with the raw files. Is there a procedure or plugin that will create sidecar files in the same location as the (raw) image files in a nested file structure, so that I can then import the images (where they are now on the disk) into Lightroom and retain all the information that was recorded in Aperture (e.g. star ratings, keywords)? There are many thousands of images, in a fairly complex nested file structure, and recreating the images or manually moving files where they need to be in the file structure would take many hours.
If there is a FAQ on this topic, can someone simply kindly point me to the FAQ? I tried searching but was unable to find anything useful. I found solutions that exported the master files (duplicating ALL the image files) with xmp sidecars but as noted above this would be problematic given the size and structure of the files currently in Aperture.
    Thanks!

There are 2 big problems with the export/duplication route:
    1) The files are in a fairly complicated nested structure, and they need to STAY in that nested structure.
    2) The time and disk space required to duplicate the entire library.
I don't have iView, don't know enough about Applescript to do this myself. (If I did, I would have done it already after reading the threads here that referenced iView.)
This is *extremely* frustrating. If this is a simple thing (for someone with the appropriate skillset) to write a plugin for, Adobe should have an employee or associate developer do it to ease the transition for new customers coming to Lightroom with a library already cataloged in Aperture.

  • A reference on iPhoto 8.x to Aperture 3.22 migration

This might be useful to others, I'm also seeking additional references.
Based on my own testing and what I've read here and elsewhere I've been editing a blog post on iPhoto 8.x to Aperture 3.22 migration (I chose Aperture migration rather than upgrading to iPhoto 9. I'm also still on Snow Leopard/MobileMe - I'd prefer to migrate to Mountain Lion than to Lion.)
So far I've migrated two smallish iPhoto Libraries (<5 GB). My 90GB iPhoto Library will go last.
It's not been painless, but in many ways it's gone better than I expected (my expecations were low). I'm glad I waited for Aperture 3.22/3.23 before migrating.
The lack of migration of Album/Event Descriptions is the biggest disappointment so far. There are no Descriptions on Aperture Albums, but the lack of migration of Event Descriptions is weird. Aperture Projects do have Descriptions.
    I'm updating my notes here:

If you know of any good Community posts or FAQs or articles please send them my way and I'll update the little article I wrote. Apple could document this a bit better.

no need for help... it seems like whenever i imported the pics from iphoto, they became corrupted. after a painful 12 hours long process, i finally get all my pics reloaded into the iphoto library.
