Aperture 3.4 is out...

But remember to backup before you update.

You also apparently need OS X 10.8.2 to install the update.
OS X 10.8.2 or OS X Lion 10.7.5

  • Aperture Import destination grayed out when importing from iPad

I'm trying to import a bunch of photos from my iPad. I want to dump them all in one project in Aperture, but after selecting the iPad from the import source list, it grays out the options to select the destination. It also grays out the option to uncheck the Autosplit events. I do not want to do this import and then have to go back and merge 20 projects.  Any ideas?

  • Aperture and mobileme = washed out picture after downloading?

    Hi,
Synced a few albums from Aperture to a few mobileme gallery's so a few friends could download the pictures very easy. One of them asked me why i screwed up the pictures because the all appeared to have a washed out look on his pc.
Tried it myself and it's true.
If i download a picture from the gallery and open in in Xee on my mac it appears to be washed out, in preview it looks ok. On a windows pc in the default picture viewer same result.
Opening the file in photoshop it appears to be ok.
Tried to talk to a mobileme support guy but he couldn't help me with it.
    test album: http://gallery.me.com/reinoutsmit#100099&bgcolor=black&view=grid

Don't fully understand what you are observing in Aperture. For me originals show Adobe RGB, as do the images seen in the MM gallery within Aperture, and as do Downloads from that MM gallery. (I primarily use SmugMug these days, and not MobileMe galleries).
Secondly, I don't correlate what William said with viewing of a Download -- but would perhaps with Online? Any download should view fine, unless the problem is with the viewing app? And as I said, everything I could view a download with displayed fine.
Third, another discussion, unrelated to Aperture discusses similar issues with profiles -- see:

  • Using Aperture 2, photos imported out of order

I'm finding that when I import pictures from my card reader, that the photos are out of order, a lot of the time, and am wondering if there is something that I can do to correct this.
Thanks in advance for any help!

You can sort the images in Aperture in a number of ways:
You can also go into list view and sort on fields that are not in the list above. Finally you can modify the displayed metadata to add something to the default set that you want to sort on.

  • Images imported from Aperture showing up 'washed out' in Lightroom.

I am aware that Lightroom uses ProPhoto RBG. When i export images from Aperture to a folder then import into Lightroom the images appear very different. Is there a setting i am missing as the images seem 'washed' out in Lightroom. When i export to the desktop and open in Photoshop they look the same as in Aperture. After i import to Lightroom and open in Photoshop they still look washed out.
New to Lightroom and trying to find the right alternative to Aperture.
    Many Thanks in advance.

You are probably right, it is an issue with color profiles and gamut.  Aperture does use a different raw converter, which will create some variance.  In fact, many like the look of straight Aperture raw conversions over straight ACR conversions.  But if the washed out look is dramatic, and Photoshop opens your raw files okay, then it must be a profile issue.
It may help to explain how you are exporting from Aperture.  Are your source files raw files, PSDs, TIFFs, or JPEGs?   Are you exporting masters, or are you exporting versions?  If you're exporting versions, take a look at your "source preset" when exporting.  What color profile are you embedding?
Although if you are embedding any color profile, Photoshop and Lightroom should pick it up.
All I've read is that Lightroom manages profiles more transparently than Photoshop, but perhaps someone could jump in here and say how it is managed.
Finally, what purpose are you exporting and importing into Lightroom?  If you're migrating your library to a Lightroom catalog, you may be best served by using the Aperture migration plug-in.
    Aperture import plugin now available
The plug-in still has issues with foreign characters, importing all previews, and face keywording and keywording previews.  You'll be better off waiting until these issues are fixed.  Even if you can't, the plug-in would still be a better option than a manual attempt, unless you're doing something other than migrating your Aperture library.

  • Is Aperture on its way out or should i buy it ?

I read somewhere that aperture is on its way out and there will be no more development ? Is that true ?

Aperture will still be supported and updated to work with the next MacOS X version Yosemite, but yes, Apple will not release a new Aperture version. Both, Aperture and iPhoto will be replaced by a new application "Photos", to be released next year. Apple will support the migration of Aperture libraries and iPhoto libraries to "Photos".

  • Aperture Library.aplibrary greyed out (relocating library)?

i am setting up a new mac pro and had previously located my aperture library on a disk that was storing databases (as opposed to the disk with the OS on it).
i have decided instead to use a larger HD for the OS drive and to keep all my databases on it. however i am running into a problem i don't understand.
right now in the PICTURES folder on my OS drive i am showing a "Aperture Library.aplibrary" which is GREYED OUT and when i try to overwrite it with the NEW library (370 GB) that is coming from the other "database disk" i am getting some error that says i can't do anything with it because it is in use - even though i have quit out of Aperture. so i went hunting for the offending software, closed Photos App and some other miscellaneous apps and did a restart and go the same thing.
so i decided to just go ahead and copy the NEW library to the OS drive and put it in the Pictures folder names as Aperture Library 2.aplibrary so now this is in the folder along with the /still/ greyed out aplibrary.
any ideas on what i should do here?
presumably i could open Aperture and tell it to use the "2" aplibrary? or is there something mission critical i am missing here that i don't want to mess up? ALSO, is there a correct procedure for relocating an aplibrary? i mean i got confused but i guess normally i should be able to write over an aplibrary and then TELL APERTURE to open the aplibrary of the new location on the OS drive, right (instead of finding it on the other "database" drive)?
    THANKS

sorry, just to be clear. the new mac pro is already set up. i just want to relocate the aplibrary so that i am not using this second "database" drive to store the aperture and other databases on...

  • My Aperture 3 trial ran out... export options?

So I accidentally let the time run out on my Aperture 3 trial. I did some photo organization in it, as well some editing and geotagging. Is there any way I can now export my photos including the changes that I made? I'm thinking that maybe it's too advanced for me and that I'm just going to get the newest iPhoto instead. However, I'd hate to have to make all of the changes to all of my photos again... Any help? Thanks!

    TriviallyTravis wrote:
Thanks for the reply, Frank. In the event that I'm able to find a way to extend my trial or something like that, how would I have gone about exporting the versions that retained any adjustments I made?
In this case you would have been able to export the versions which reflect the adjustments you made. The adjustments would have baked into the image I didn't mean to imply that the adjustments themselves (increase in exposure, decrease contrast, etc) would have beed available as such to another program.
Also, I thought that Aperture and iPhoto were made to work closely together.
Not sure where you got that idea but its not totally  correct.  The way the two programs interact is as follows:
Aperture is able to access the iPhoto library in order to import it into itself. When you do this metadata such as keywords and the EXIF data is imported along with the images into Aperture.
The only access  iPhoto has to the Aperture library is as any other program that accesses  the Aperture previews via the media browser.
Why then is it that they wouldn't retain metadata between the two products? Say if somebody had put a lot of work into iPhoto and then decided to move to Aperture... That's a little annoying =/
Migrating from iPhoto to Aperture will retain your iPhoto information. There is no reverse migration, that is you can't somehow export the Aperture library and import it into iPhoto.

  • Aperture 2.1 is out today, with new open plugin architecture

See press below. Sounds really great.
    08:30 28Mar08 PRN-Apple Releases Aperture 2.1 with Powerful Image Editing Plug-In Architecture
    CUPERTINO, Calif., March 28 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Apple(R) today
released Aperture(TM) 2.1, which introduces an open plug-in architecture that
makes it easy for photographers to use specialized third party imaging
software right from within Aperture. Available today as a free software
update, Aperture 2.1 includes the Apple-developed plug-in, Dodge & Burn, which
adds brush-based tools for dodge (lighten), burn (darken), contrast,
saturation, sharpen and blur. Over the coming months, third party software
developers will deliver image editing plug-ins for localized editing, filters
and effects, noise analysis and reduction, fisheye lens correction and more.
"The image quality in Aperture 2 has won over the most demanding
photographers," said Rob Schoeben, Apple's vice president of Applications
Product Marketing. "Now, thanks to our open plug-in architecture, users can
access an entire industry's worth of imaging expertise without ever leaving
    Aperture."
"To date, maybe two percent of my photographs needed to be touched up
outside Aperture," said John Stanmeyer, founding member of the VII Photo
Agency and contributing photographer for Time and National Geographic
magazines. "Now that I can dodge and burn right within Aperture's new plug-in,
I can't imagine when I'll have to open any other application to tone my
    images."
By clicking on one or more images within Aperture, users can choose from a
menu of installed plug-ins and apply specialized imaging operations to either
TIFF or RAW images. Apple is working closely with key developers to bring the
most requested plug-ins to Aperture such as:
-- Nik Software's Viveza plug-in, powered by U Point technology, which
provides a powerful, precise and easy way for photographers to
    selectively control and adjust color and light in their digital images;
-- PictureCode's Noise Ninja plug-in that delivers advanced high ISO noise
    analysis and reduction;
-- Digital Film Tools' Power Stroke plug-in that features a simple,
stroke-based interface to quickly mask and intuitively perform targeted
    adjustments;
-- The Tiffen Company's Dfx plug-in that provides an expansive suite of
    creative filters and effects;
-- dvGarage's dpMatte plug-in, which is a high performance chroma key tool
for creating seamless composites, and the HDRtoner plug-in that enables
the selection of multiple photos to create a single high dynamic range
    (HDR) image; and
-- Image Trends' plug-ins that include Fisheye-Hemi to quickly and
effortlessly correct fisheye lens distortion, ShineOff which
automatically removes shine from faces and PearlyWhites that
    automatically whitens and brightens teeth.

  • Aperture 1.1.1 out..

Aperture 1.1.1 Update addresses several issues related to performance, stability, color correction, and display compatibility. This update is recommended for all Aperture users.
Note: You must first update to Aperture 1.1 and Mac OS X 10.4.6 or later before installing Aperture 1.1.1

    wonderful!
it appears that raw images (NEF) display quicker.
other files that had been edited outside of aperture seem to display quicker as well.
for example, i have two huge PSD files: one is 1 gb (1 layer) and the other is 1.9 gib (4 layers). the first one displays immediately and the second one displays between 30 and 40 seconds. too bad i don't have solid info to back this up, but if i remember correctly, these files usually took a long time to display and as a result aperture seem to hog up the CPU forever, and so i always made it a point to not to select these images by mistake.
i think this is looking better and better.
    nice.

  • Aperture name icon grayed out,  why?

Why is my name icon gray in the toolbar and cannot add names.  It used to work.

I just wanted to post this
    Coincidence!

  • HT3805 why is the face and names feature grayed out in my aperture program?

why is my faces aand names feature in aperture 3.2 grayed out?

Are they greyed out in the toolbar or in the preferences?  If the former, then enable them in preferences ;-)

  • Aperture is swapping out images.

I have aperture on my laptop and am working with an aperture library of over 27,000 images. All but the most recent master images are referenced on an external drive which is backed up separately of my aperture vault backups. Last week while looking through some images from 2005 the thumbnails started changing before my eyes into images from a different project. My master images are stored by date, I've checked the external drive and there are images missing in the folder for that date. I'm assuming that my aperture database is corrupt. I tried consolidating the images from that project but it brought in the wrong images.
My issue now is; do I try to sort out the copy of aperture that I'm working on and re-import the images that it's unhappy with, or do I restore from a backup and work from that. As the images in question are very old I have no idea how far back this problem might go so restoring from a backup isn't necessarily going to help. Is there any way I can look at the aperture database to find out what's actually going on.

I've tried restoring to a backup that looked O.K and the problem has repeated itself. I have vault backups which I can restore to and I also have time machine backups. The restore from vault takes a long time and the time machine backups have to be copied to another location because the library won't run from the backup location. It's going to be very time consuming to try to go back and sort out when the problem occurred. Is there any way I can look at the aperture database in these files to try to find a backup which is clean?

  • Zoom/zoom-out of D800 NEF hangs Aperture

    Hi
Just got the D800 yesterday and have imported the first images to Aperture 3.2.3
    Import went fairly quick.
BUT - when I zoom in on an image - and then zooms out again, the LOADING message appears and nothing more happens.
When I right-click on the Aperture icon, there is a "program is not responding" message :-(
I tried to export an image to tiff - and that went fine. Also tried to import the tiff back into Aperture - and zoom/zoom-out works fine, even though this file is 240MB, whereas the NEF files is 37MB's.
My machine is a Mac Mini i5, 8GB mem. All software updates are installed.
    Any ideas??
    BR,
    Jesper

    Hi Ernie,
The images were not edited prior to the zoom- zoom-out operation.
    I made some additional tests:
    Before Starting Aperture:
    Free Mem 2,30GB
    Inactive Mem 2,78
    After Starting Aperture:
    Free Mem 1,37GB
    Inactive Mem 2,81
    Zooming in:
    Free Mem 923MB
    Inactive Mem 2,81
Aperture hangs - and its memory consumption says 1,37GB  CPU 199,3%
Hope this makes any sense :-)
    BR,
    Jesper
The only thing that brings Aperture back to life, is to kill the program.
I was using 14 bit depth NEF's lossless compression. Tried to change that to 12bit lossless. Makes no difference!
