Aperture 3.4 upgrade loop
Anyone any ideas? I am in an Aperture 3.4 upgrade loop. On Apps update, it shows Aperture is avaialble for upgrade to 3.4 - when I ask it to install, it says not available from this service, and you need to go directly to Software Update. But from Software update, after downloading 3.4, when you click on it to install it says "Unable to install from here - go to Apps Update" and this loop continues.
I am running Aperture 3.2.3 - I originally bought Aperture 2 online from Apple and paid upgrade fees to get to where I am now.
Thanks,
John
Try to use the installer on the Apple Support page:
Aperture 3.4
There has been a problem with the recent installer. If you have no urgent need to upgrade now, you might consider to wait for the next release fixing this problem. But if decide to upgrade now and just in case, you see crashes after upgrading, see this support article by Apple:
Aperture 3.4: May quit unexpectedly on launch after updating

Cannot open aperture v3 after upgrading to OS 10.6.8. Bought the upgrade online so cannot reload the software. Can you help?
How did you buy it online? Did you buy a registration number from the Apple Store?
Then you can download the Trial version from this link:
Aperture 3.1 Trial
and run Software Update immediately after installing.
Go to the Applications folder and delete Aperture.
Download the Aperture 3.1 Trial.
Open the Aperture Trial disc image.
Double-click the "Aperture Trial.mpkg" file.
Follow the onscreen instructions to install Aperture.
After the installation completes, choose Software Update from the Apple () menu.
Cannot open aperture v3 after upgrading to OS 10.6.8.
But what exactly is the error you get, when you try to launch Aperture? Maybe you need to do more than updating.

Appreciate the help.ah yes that would change it a little
copy the DMG (if you downloaded it) to your other system and install it there
or download the demo on the other system (the one running AP2) and put the serial number in there -
My Aperture crash after upgrade to 3.4. Pls help !
My Aperture crash after upgrade to 3.4. Pls help!
Removing the plist "fixed" my problems too.
Any idea what specifically in the plist is causing the problem?
That depends. I have not seen your crash log.
The problem is, that the current Aperture installer is buggy. Depending on the Aperture version you are upgrading from, some frameworks may not be installed correctly. The installer erraniously assumes they are already installed. That is why the suggested fix is to reinstall from an early version, so the installer is forced to install everything new.
Your plist contains your webaccounts, recent files, the layout of the Gui. If one of these settings prompts Aperture to use ine of the missing frameworks, it will crash. For most people here it is the Facebook setting. Removing the preferences makes Aperture forget that you have a Facebook account. If you add that account again, Aperture probably will crash again.

Aperture won't upgrade library
Hi, I split my library into a set of libraries based on year. I have in total around 70,000 photos in 14 libraries. Its been about a year that I have maintained this format. The last upgrade to Aperture seems to have messed up my libraries.
At this point, I am trying to create one Aperture library with all the photos.
I created a new library and started importing each existing one into it. However, I am getting an error “The library could not be imported because it is from an out of date version of Aperture 3. Please upgrade…”. If I open Aperture and try switching to one of these libraries that I cannot open from within Aperture, I get the message, “The selected library is from an older version of Aperture and requires a relaunch to switch”. When I switch it does not offer to upgrade.
I reinstalled iPhoto and tried switching to one of my libraries and received the message that the library needs to be upgraded first in Aperture. This upgrade does not occur as I have detailed in this message.
I’ve read Apple’s support pages, I have search the internet and this forum. Nothing I have done has solved my issue. I’ve rebuilt, repaired the libraries and repaired permissions for example. The last recourse I have is to relocate my originals. I’m using that has a last resort. I’m afraid I will lose my versions and other settings in the process.
Any ideas on how to fix this import error?
Thank you in advance.Hi,
I had a similar issue as you a while back and it was a permissions issue. Apple does not recommend placing Aperture libraries on a NAS. I back mine up to a NAS but I do not use the library from the NAS. Using a Sparse Image format, you can create a virtual HFS+ drive on the NAS and mount that. Then you can use your Aperture library that way. I use Sparse Images to backup my data to the NAS. Disk Utility, Carbon Copy Cloner and other tools can create these drives for you. You might find backups and file access will be faster using a disk image vs using the NAS directly as well.
My external drive which contains the Aperture libraries, is connected via Thunderbolt connection, not a NAS per se...
For external drives, I found going to the Info section for the external drive (right click on drive icon) and near the bottom is a checkbox which states "Ignore Ownership on this Volume" Check that box and it should resolve the issue like I was experiencing.
I corrected mine by going to each Aperture library and selecting 'Me' as owner.
One note, when I checked off the "Ignore ownership..." checkbox, now my NAS is syncing the external drive folder 'Pictures' with the NAS. I have a Synology NAS and setup a shared folder in the cloud between the external drive and my NAS. This way my backup on the NAS is in sync with the Pictures folder on my external drive. Prior to this, I used Carbon Copy Cloner on a schedule for backing up my Pictures folder. I still use Carbon Copy Cloner as its a great tool but for this particular case, I chose the Synology cloud.
So, to summarize, I repaired/rebuilt my libraries, repaired disk permissions, modified the ownership flag...
Another source I used for correcting my issues was at the Photosexpert website. Its a great source. https://thephotosexpert.com/forum -
I installed snow leopard and lost access to Aperture 1.5 (no one at the apple store told me that would happen). Then, I got an upgrade (comped by the store) but it won't install without Aperture 1.5 serial number which I cannot find among all my stuff. Also, because snow leopard blitzed my access to Aperture 1.5, I can't find the serial number through the program either. Any suggestions on how I can get the Aperture 2.0 upgrade installed? Help!
Have the same issue. I filled out the form on the link above after speaking to Apple support today. We'll see what they find and if I am issued a new serial number. Mine was preinstalled on my Macbook Pro in late 2007 and I don't remember seeing the manual with my order, the manual has the serial number. I did pay for it and I cannot find my receipt either.

Unable to install Aperture 3 after upgrade to OS X 10.8
After upgrading to OS X 10.8, when I try to install Aperture, I keep getting this error message "To open Aperture, Installer must quit and reopen". I have the box version of Aperture 3, so it's version 3.0 and I will not be able to download the latest dmg off Mac App Store. Any suggestion will be appreciated.
Try if this download link for the trial version still works: if yes, you can unlock it with your serial number from the boxed version:
http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.info.apple.com/Aperture/061-8328 .20101020.AprE3/ApertureTrial3.1.dmg
To be able to run the installer in Mountain Lion you will have to change the System Preferences "Security & Privacy" temporarily to allow "Applications downloaded from anywhere"

I can't import photos from iphone4 to Aperture after Yosemite upgrade, aperture is up to date
Aperture stopped recognizing my IPhone4 when I try to import photos. This happened after I upgraded to Yosemite. My phone does show up in ITunes, and I have tried unlocking phone and shutting it off/on. My Aperture is up to date.
I went to Yosemite help page, and found an answer to another problem I was having after OS X upgrade. I was seeing duplicate iMacs under devices (I was checking to see if my phone showed up which it didn't). The fix for that problem took care of the problem I was having with the iPhone import into Aperture.
This leads me to believe the problem was due to the upgrade and some bugs that are still there. Now it's working fine.
Thank again for you help. -
When moving to Aperture 3, why upgrade the imaging system all at once?
I have been reading about the library migration issues when upgrading to Aperture 3 and my question is this: what is the advantage, if any, of attempting to migrate all the images instead of just upgrading the database and tackling the images as needed? For example, with a 60 gig library of previously edited images, why would I bother migrating all the images when I could simply do that one image at a time, as needed, to take advantage of the new editing tools? Wouldn't this approach make the upgrade process infinitely smoother and faster?
Apple says much the same thing is their support article here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3945
So, for those of you forcing the images update process along with the database upgrade, my question is why take the risk? Yes I know it is supposed to work, and it probably does for most people, but why bother taking that risk for images you have already edited when you can easily do it an image at a time? Am I missing something?IDImager allows for Keywords to be written in hierarchical format. This means each individual keyword includes the parent keywords like this: "Others|Import|2009|2009-02-22". The only debate in my mind is about what will be more time consuming, writing and debugging a script to have exiftool extract the keywords and apply them hierarchical, or doing this task manually.
From playing with the Aperture trial I deducted that making changes to keywords in the keyword HUD applies these changes to all images. Changing the "fred" keyword to "Freddy" will update all images that have the original "fred" keyword applied.
We'll see. I am certainly not new to programming but have not used AppleScript before. Am still searching for a comprehensive guide and scripting examples that would help in pulling this off. But as I get closer to having the pre-processing outside of Aperture done for all of my images and very little accomplished in terms of the script I am leaning towards manually fixing my keywords.

Aperture broken after upgrade to Leopard
I Upgraded from Tiger to Leopard and updated my aperture to 1.5.6.
Everything appeared to work fine until I tried to import some images into my library. On import aperture crashed. Now none of my previews show up. Tried restoring my Aperture library form a time machine backup. Still can't see my previews. Removed the prefs and rebuilt the database, still nothing. Removed the Arerture library completly and tried to import my images and aperture crashes. As a last resort I removed aperture and did a clean install from my install disc. And guess what. It displays the splash scrren and crashed. Tried software update and I get a message saying that Aperture can't be upgraded. I have spent countless hours building my library and now all is lost. I love this product, but I am loosing trust in it's reliability. If anyone has any advise I would love you assistance.Your issues probably stemmed from letting Time Machine try to backup your Ap library. Have TM exclude the library from being included in its operations.
I had prepared some instructions, but they didn't work out as I expected when I walked through them in my own library. The best recovery advice I'd have is to visit Bagleturf.com and read up on how to delve into the library for maintenance.
Hopefully, you imported into a project that doesn't hold many images, and you can delete that from the Library package and move on. But your damage could be greater than just your last import project.
What I ended up doing was to start Aperture with the Opt + Cmd keys, and told it to rebuild Later. Then, as I'd click on each project, it would rebuild. The ones that didn't cause errors I'd export, then import into a new library. Unfortunately, I can't summarize what I did to recover from projects that did have errors. But readings in a manual or two and Steve Wellers' insights (Bagleturf.com) got me through it.
I hope that's better than nothing.

How to find my old aperture library after upgrade?
I recently updated my system to OSX 10.10, upon attempting to open aperture to view my photos, an info box came up saying my version of aperture was redundant and i should upgrade via the mac app store, I then tried to open the library through iPhoto and was given a message in the same tone (see screenshot 1).
I then purchased Aperture to upgrade the library and view all of my photos. Upon launching it did not give me an option to load the library in question, instead I was only given the option to load from the iPhoto library or to create a new library which, incidentally, was created as a REPLACEMENT to the existing library, in effect overwriting all of the data from my aperture library of five years with a new empty library.
No problem, I backed up the aperture library to ext HD but it is also refusing to open with the new aperture software (see screenshot 2).
How do I find the version of the library that was on the computer before it was replaced with the empty new one, it must be there as it was amounting to about 16 GB of photos, they cant just disappear?
screenshot1
screenshot 2I then purchased Aperture to upgrade the library and view all of my photos.
If your Aperture version has been any version of Aperture 3, you are entitled to a free update. If the App Store is charging you, contact the App Store Support. Your email receipt should have a "Report a problem" link.
is there a way without time machine to find the library which was being used at the time of upgrade?
Did you keep your library in your Pictures folder? Check the sizes of all libraries you are seeing there. Sometimes an library will appear to be apparently empty, even if there are gigabytes of photos in them.
To find all libraries, or traces of them, search with Fnd Any File (http://apps.tempel.org/FindAnyFile/index.php) as described by Old Toad at this link:
Re: Since I updated to iPhoto 9.5.1, my library is not listed or available. How can I find it? Can I use the time machine to restore it?
Download and run Find Any File to search for a file with "ThumbJPGSegment" in the file name. These are files common to all versions of iPhoto libraries.
FAF can search areas that Spotlight can't like invisible folders, system folders and packages. If there's a library hiding somewhere on your hard drive FAF will find it. -

Then on the copy, launch the app holding down the Command + Option keys, and in the resulting diaolg, choose Repair then hit Ok. Let the process run and the upgrade should continue after that. I have recently upgraded my Aperture to 3.2.4 after doing so I found my library has disappeared, how do I search for it or find it again? Has anyone else experienced this? If so how did you fix this?
Have you checked the size of your apparently empty Aperture Library, if it really is empty? Sometimes a filter prevents the contents from showing. Are all search fields (in the Inspector, the Browser) cleared?
Sometimes an Aperture Library is written to the top level of your system drive, if you are having disk trouble.
In the Finder menu bar click "Go" > Go to Folder
and enter a Slash-character : "/", hit return
This will open a Finder Window at the top level of your system volume. Browse from there, if you can find a trace of your aperture library, but be careful not to change or delete anything.
Regards
Léonie
P.S. do you have a backup of your aperture Library? -
Aperture 3 has upgraded serial number
I bought Aperture 3 for my daughter as she is into photography. When we have gone to install the program and it asks for the serial number, the serial on the back says "Aperture Upgtrade V3.0" . I have put this number in and the response is "this is an uprade number, please put original serial number in. This is the first program i have bought.
You bought an upgrade package. You need an original. I hope you can return what you bought. If not, you might be able to work out something with Apple (paying the difference between the full license and the upgrade price).
