Aperture 3.5.1 and OSX 10.9.4 memory issue

I note the complaints of running out of memory using Aperture date back to OS X 10.9.2 and subsequent posts suggest the problem had been fixed with 10.9.3. I don't think I am the only one still plagued by this issue now running 10.9.4 on a 27" iMac i7 (late 2009) with 16GB memory and 2Tb HD. Aperture is the only application that presents me with this problem and so I am inclined to believe that there is a memory leak that has not been addressed by Apple. What are some of the other experiences out there and what solutions have you found? In the back of my mind there is the thought that this is a problem Apple no longer cares to deal with  and our likely choices will be to see what becomes  available in Photos o just move on to PS, Pixelmator, C1, etc., when we have finally had it with force quitting and restarting.

Just so this won't be a total waste of my time, here try to  learn something.
yet the application still hangs  (49 times according to the Aperture activity monitor).
From http://lists.apple.com/archives/unix-porting/2005/Oct/msg00032.html
"not responding" means that the application is currently "hung".
"recent hangs" is the count of times the application was not responding, but then became responsive again.
ActivityMonitor sends "ping" AppleEvents to processes to determine if they are hung. If they respond to the event, then they are not hung. If they fail to respond to the event, then they are considered to be in a "Not Responding" state, and for each transition from "Responding" to "Not Responding" that it sees counts as a "hang" of the application.
Normally, an application will be written in such a way that it will at least *periodically* check for AppleEvents, even if it tends to call from an event from CFRunLoop into a long involved process. You can get false positives on a "Not Responding" (the same situation that gets the busy cursor on an application in the GUI, FWIW) if an application does a huge amount of work in something called from CFRunLoop.
You have a problem, not Aperture not Apple. That problem is not a 'memory leak'   as is obvious from your Activity report or any other buzzword you've picked up on the net trying to sound impressive.
I gave you a few steps to start the troubleshooting process, you choose to ignore those and instead come back here and make disparaging comments about me.
During the over 35 years  I was doing this for a living I had to put up with people like yourself, now that I do this on a volunteer basics I don;t have to.

  • Aperture 2.3 update and Canon 350 (xsi) RAW+JPEG issue

Anyone know if this update fixes the problem with importing RAW+JPEG captures from Canon 350 (xsi)? I'd hate to download this update and then have to un-do it (again).
    Thanks!

Not using a canon 50d, using a Sony a900 instead. Actually, DPP is special because it does absolutely no noise reduction (at least in AHD mode). You can see that it is actually noisier but with a much finer grain pattern than ACR, aperture, raw developer, etc. You don't get the blotchiness associated with the NR of these other converters. The beauty of this is that when you run it through your grain reducing software it is much better for the software to deal with (the noise hasn't been processed by any NR software- which makes the noise non-random) and as such produces much cleaner images. I just did a comparison of the noise with the A900... here are links of the comparison using a publicly available Imaging Resource Raw file:

  • Aperture 3.4.1 and raw 4 update installed now many of my D700 and D800E raw files are turning in to unsupported file format?

Only happens if the file is opened for editing and not to all files. Pictures are visible in the browser. No issuses with Aperture prior to upgrade. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Have not been able to re-install raw 3.13 always says newer software and closes
    I have Aperture disc 1,2,and 3;
Followed commands to re-install from #3 no change in library's unsupported images when upgraded to 3.4.1
Uninstall again with Mac Cleaner all ?DLL files erased only library remains
Install #3 from disc and new permissions to open library"from newer version" and all of previous images restored, but new older ones start to blink out "they do not turn black but look like you are using rabbit ears to tune in your TV, scrambled" until viewed for processing then become unsupported.
Repaired 3.1 library and Aperture would open but not open library. Re-installed 3.4.1 many more images failing to load across entire 5700 Nef's library but not JPEG.
    Close but where is culprit?
Raw 4 is always there even in Aperture 3.1 due to Lion OSX8
3.4.1 is the only down loaded upgrade, new down load each time

  • Aperture 3.4.1 and Outlook 2011

Although you can select Outlook 2011 to email photos directly from Aperture, it does not work in 3.4.1.
The only email that works is "mail" , which is an email client I do not use.
I also have Entourage 2008. this is also selectable- but also does not work.
I have both the current verison of Aperture and the current version of Outlook (office) and the current verison of Entourage 2008.
I have OSX Lion (most current)
There is not much on this in the support groups.
When I try to email a picture from Aperture with Outlook selected- the welcome chime in outlook is audible, but there is no pop up or anything happening.
When it is selected for Entourage- it will automatically have "mail" come up.
Can they fix this please?...What is the point of having the update making these email clients selectable if it is not going to work.

Aperture 3.4.1 is sandboxed, and apparently it can no longer use external clients and plug-ins that are not sandboxed. Outlook and Entourage need to be updated to comply with MAcOS 10.7.5 and 10.8.x to work with Aperture 3.4.1.

  • Aperture Reprocessing Images, Previews, and Thumbnails

Came across a bug the otherday while working with metadata.  After attempting to use Metadata->Batch Change->Time Adjustment I noticed that after applying the adjustment the date/time on the images returned back to their original settings.  I thought it strange but simply switched over to Metadata->Adjust Date and Time  with the Also Change Original File option checked.  This seemed to work.
But - then I began to notice also that the system was slowing.  Did a little checking and discovered that Aperture was processing thumbnails and previews in the background.  This should not have been happening for a couple reasons:
    1) I always allow previews and thumbs to complete follwing an import before doing anything else
    2) None of the images were being modified at the time (I was simply scrolling through libraries)
I have spent a couple days on this now and could not find the culprit.  It goes something like this:
Open Aperture - everything is fine
Select a library and start looking through it and not soon after the activity window shows it building previews (and/or thumbnails) for the library I am in.
Just tonight that got me thinking.  I opened Aperture
    I opened a library
From the Inspector I went to the Info tab
I selected the Aperture drop down
Every time I view an image - the "Last Modified Date:" time stamp gets updated to the current date/time - even though I am not modifing the image in any way.
I am guessing this is what reset by DTG values (paragraph 1) and why thumbnails and previews are being regenerated.
    I repaired permissions
    I repaired the library
    I rebuilt the database
I deleted all previews and rebuilt them
Permissions are R&W to the folder the library is in
Permissions are R&W to the library itself
What I cannot figure out is why Aperture is "Updating" every image I view.
I was wondering - if anyone else had come across a similar issue.
    System Information
Mac OSX dual 2.26Ghz Quad Core
    RAM 32GB
    DIsk Size 2TB / 845GB Free
    Dual monitor configuration
    Aperture v3.4.3
    Library Size: 10,189 images / 47GB
    Library Type: Managed
    Location: my home directory
Faces Enabled (but turning it off has no affect)
Post-Import Processing uses Camera Previews (but using Standard Previews has no affect)
New projects automatically generate previews is OFF
Share previews with iLife and iWork is NEVER
Photo Preview is 1920x1920 (lower size has no affect)
Photo Quality is 12 High (lower setting has no affect)
Photo Stream is OFF (never been ON)

    Update
So tonight I tore into the library contents itself and found that all of my images were quarantined with com.apple.quarantine.
I switched to my laptop loaded aperture and viewed the demo library discovering that the masters there are not quarantined.  So, it appears that sandbox security flagged all my images for god only know why.
I've spent the night manually removing quarantine from all my files.  The I deleted all the thumbnails and am rerunning thumbnail and preview generation.  I'm hoping this resolves the issue.
But now the next question - why were the masters flagged in the first place?

  • Problems with FCP 5.1.4 and OSX 10.4.9

I upgraded to Tiger, installed the new FCP Studio and everything was working fantastic.
The next morning there was a software update for Tiger and FCP-5.1.4, it's been a nightmare ever since. When I restarted FCP would not recognize my Sony HDR FX1.
I had this problem once before with 4.5 and I fixed it by re-installing FCP and doing the upgrades, so that's what I did with 5 but this time there was a new problem. It wouldn't let me work on anything that I had opened since I did the software update, so I had to do the update again and then FCP wouldn't recognize my camcorder again on startup. If you pressed log and capture you could control the camera but no capture was possible.
So I re-set the easy set-up and presto! everything was fine and I worked productively for a few days.
But then I had to capture some SD from my Canon GL2 so I reset all the settings for DV NTSC and reset the easy set-up for DV NTSC but now FCP won't recognize my GL2 on start-up. If I click log and capture I can control the camera but no capture.
My next try to solve my problem was to downgrade back to my original 10.4.6 and FCP 5.1
That put be back to square one and everything works fine again except I am left with the problem that everything that I worked on after I did the update won't open, I get error 41.
Now I know this is because I am now trying to work on these projects with 5.1 after they were worked on in 5.1.4. But the problem is that everytime I update to 5.1.4 I can no longer capture or print to tape.
I tried the trashing the FCP prefs thing and the repairing permissions thing but I can't seem to solve the problem.
Has anyone else had any problems using FCP 5.1.4 and OSX 10.4.9?

Not sure how you tried to install 10.4.8 but if all
else fails you can always reinstall the original
operating system that came with your Mac using 'Erase
and Install' then upgrade it to 10.4.8 - probably in
    stages.
Erase and install should be used as a last resort! A better option is to use the "archive and install" feature. It renames your old system folder and creates a new one for the OS you just re-installed. That way you don't have to reinstall everything, your user accounts and emails should all still be there, and if something doesn't work, you have your old system folder to pull things like preference files out of.

  • After upgrading to Aperture 3.4.1 (and really since 3.4), aperture becomes unresponsive almost immediately after I open it.  It tears through over 1GB of memory within a minute, and I am forced to either force quit or open the terminal and "killall".

How do I fix this issue?  I haven't been able to use Aperture or load new photos into Aperture for weeks.  Since upgrading to Aperture 3, from Aperture 2; I've noticed that Aperture 3 is a major memory hog.  I had to upgrade my unibody macbook to keep up with Aperture, otherwise my whole system become unresponsive when trying to simply look at my photos.  I have about 15,000 pictures in my library, but the program is designed to organize large libraries.  Why has it been so buggy the past year?  Should I just jump ship and go to Lightroom?
    Thanks

    Matt,
it is normal, that after a crash a library repair is required. Aperture is a database, and if a crash happens, transactions may not be completed, so the library may be left in an inconsitent state. Usually the built-in repair methods can take care of this. But I assume, you have a backup of your Aperture library. If not, now would be the time to create one, just in case.
I doubt, Aperture is causing this crashes - it may be a coincidence; kernel panics quite often are due to an overfull hard disk, incompatible frameworks or kernel extensions, or to failing hardware. Run a hardware check, check the available disk space and file system with disk utility, and try to remember, if you installed anything else lately, that might have added incompatible kernel extensions. Turn off any helper apps, start up items.
Your kernel panic occurs when accessing the graphics card. Sometimes this can be resolved by booting into safe mode, this will disable advanced features and reset the card. Note: Aperture will not run in safe boot mode, see
Mac OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode?
Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode
Browse MacBook forum and Mt. Lion forum, to see, if anybody else has problems with Mt. Lion and your particular Hardware configuration and card.
As a last measure reinstall your MacOS. You may also have a look at Thomas' Tech Corner » Understanding upgrade nightmares

  • Performance and Usability Problems-Aperture 3.1.3 and 10.7.1

    Late 2009 iMac
    Quad Core i7
    8 GB RAM
    512 ATI GPU
Nik Software Complete Collection Plugins—all updated
I’m guessing this is due to memory leaks, but Aperture is crippled with 10.7.1. On my great iMac, Aperture now runs like it did when I ran Aperture 2 on a 2004 PowerBook G4.
With Snow Leopard, I had none of these issues.
With Aperture idle, it uses up to 2 GB real memory and 3 GB virtual memory. With it idle, it generates MBs of page outs and swap used. If I start to use it for adjustments, even minor ones, page outs and swap used increase dramatically. For example, last night after editing and adjusting a project of images, page outs were just under 5 GB. I’ve reverted to the old habit of rebooting to clear page outs and swaps. Last time I had to do this was with the 2004 PowerBook.
While actually using Aperture for edits and adjustments, response to almost any input is slow, with conspicuous delays. Even checking and unchecking an adjustment brick causes a considerable delay between the click and when the change is visible.
Again, with Snow Leopard, Aperture was a bullet with current configuration. I just ordered 8 more GBs of RAM in hopes that this will help until Apple fixes Aperture.
Anyone else having such considerable performance issues with Aperture 3.1.3 and 10.7.1?
    Thanks

jcrosby wrote:The "individual setup" argument is an oversimplification. With relatively current hardware, I can reproduce very poor performance when running Aperture in Lion in either 32-bit or 63-bit mode (though the patterns change a bit), and so can many others.
    John-
Actually I do think it is about individual setups. The kinds of complaints expressed in this thread have been going on literally for decades.
Starting with early-days Photoshop then later Aperture I have observed the challenges of heavy graphics apps with hardware/RAM/OSs/app versions. We have always been able to reproduce poor performance, because apps/OSs generally do evolve to be more demanding.
IMO our goal is to help individual setups tweak to achieve non-poor performance while we wait for stronger hardware, or an OS improvement, or an app improvement, or money to buy more RAM, or whatever. IMO it really is an ongoing individual-setup (e.g. last year I was running a 2006 C2D MBP with a max of 3 GB RAM requiring constant tweaking) issue.
Today I run Aperture under 10.6.8 on a 2011 MBP with SSD and 8 GB RAM and it rocks. I would consider 10.6.8 to be one of the tweaks that folks might do if all the other tweaks (like add RAM and run 32-bit) fail to achieve non-poor performance.

  • Printing Success with Aperture 1.5.2 and HP Photosmart Pro B9180

With so many "hit-and-miss" posts regarding printing, I thought I'd post my result with Aperture 1.5.2 and my newly-acquired HP Photosmart Pro B9180.
Firstly, I have my monitor calibrated using ColorVision's Spyder Express. It's a cost-effective solution to monitor calibration and what I see on the screen is what I'm seeing in the print. I calibrate weekly.
Secondly, I'm using HP's Advanced Photo Glossy Paper for prints. HP provides the ICC profiles for their papers (and thus far, they seem to be dead-on accurate).
Thirdly, and I believe this is where issues can occur, is to set, via the Print Driver, color management as Application Managed. This bypasses the default of allowing the printer to manage color for you. This allows Aperture to use the ICC profile of the printer and calculate the proper color "conversion".
Finally, via the Apple's support article on optiziming print (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302821) save the customized printer setup for a specified print size, paper, etc.
I have made 20 prints thus far and all have come out satisfactory. The only "tip" I'd make is that I noticed the gamma setting in the print dialogue is ideally set at 1.15. Otherwise, the print seems to be a bit dark.
    PowerMac G5 Dual 2GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   4 Gigs RAM, CalDigit S2VR Duo 1TB

I just got a B9180 too so thought I would try printing from Aperture. As you suggested I set Gamma to 1.15 - but I still feel the prints are a bit dark. Tried 1.20 but that looked identical to 1.15!

  • Would I be able to use the same external hard drive for Windows and OSX?

I plan to get an external HD to put a lot of my multimedia files on and for backups but I don't know if I'll need an individual one for each operating system. I am going to be running a MacBook Pro with both Windows and OSX through Boot Camp.

    jengwall,
No, you won't need more than a single drive. There are several options to meet your needs.
OS X can partition your external, and the formats for the various volumes can be HFS+ (the native Mac format) or FAT-32 (Windows format). While OS X cannot create NTFS volumes, and it cannot write to them, it can read them. Any FAT-32 volumes created in OS X can be converted to NTFS by Windows, if and when you like.
Windows cannot natively read HFS+ volumes, and only the FAT-32 format will be both read and write for both Windows and OS X. However, there are some third-party solutions.
"Macdrive" is a Windows utility that allows it to access HFS+ volumes as read/write. On the Mac side, there is "MacFuse," which gives OS X the ability to not just read, but write to NTFS volumes.

  • How can I get iCloud to sync between iOS 6.1.3, OSX 10.6.8 and OSX 10.8.3?

I am running both OSX 10.6.8 and OSX 10.8.3 on my iMac with iOS 6.1.3 on my iPod Touch.
Everything is checked ON in the iCloud settings where those are available, in iOS, OSX 10.8 and in iCloud.com on my OSX 10.6.8 system.
I either get no synchronisation, or a duplication of events. Apple Store Events which need to be clumsily downloaded from the website, double clicked on and hopefully added to Calendar, only randomly appear and rarely get announced. I can't see a pattern to anything.
It currently won't sync between iCloud.com and Address Book, Calendar etc on the Mac let alone with iDevices (my wife has an iPad as well), despite partially syncing previously.
It is erratic, obscure and totally unreliable as well as being a huge waste of my time.
If I follow the iTunes instructions as well as the iCloud.com instructions generally nothing happens.
In the Advanced pane of iCloud.com settings, I have selected the “In-app notifications” checkbox, and Saved. Doesn't work. Then I unselected and saved and closed iCloud.com. Then checked it all over again, still doesn't work.
According to the settings it says it is sharing with the iPod Touch, but nothing happens.
Previously a few events appeared belatedly at some later time, often after the event they were supposed to announce. Currently nothing is syncing.
Most frustratingly I can't sync my Address Book/Contacts so have to manually include all the contact info in all my individual devices and systems.
Has anybody got a surefire method of making the sync happen?

That's correct but your 10.6.8 machine has no way to put it there unless you manually enter it on the website.
That to sync data from iCal and Address Book in Snow Leopard to the iCloud server you must manually register and connect to the iCloud.com website which I have done.
You can't sync from Address Book or iCal in Snow Leopard.

The syncing to the same data in Mountain Lion is done via the System Preferences > iCloud, which I have done.
Supposedly that means the data on the iCloud server is then shared between the iPod Touch, SL and ML, but it is not.
Because data entered on the SL machine never makes it from iCal or AB to iCloud or from iCloud to AB or iCal, the link breaks there.. You can use a 3rd party app (Soho) and use it instead of AB and iCal.
But the problem exists on ML as well.
I get only some Contacts and iCal events transferring.
What you are seeing is probably from SL account which I use 95% of the time. Particularly my Address Book entries. I hardly entered any of those in ML, they virtually all come from SL and seem to have transferred previously. Possibly before the latest iOS updates, but I can't swear to that as I didn't check before/after.
The vast majority of my Address Book entries appear in both iCloud.com and my iPod Touch, but not my latest changes.
This is far from the "It just happens!" promised by Apple.

  • Aperture 3.4.1 and iPhoto 11 (9.4) in Lion 10.7.5?

I have created quite a mess here, and am not sure what to do about it.  I was looking for some photos that were in my iPhoto library and I saw a vault with the same name in Aperture, but none of the photos appeared.  The previous versions of Aperture would see iPhoto libraries and open them within Aperture, but this wasn't working.  I couldn't seem to share the photos between the apps.   So I found that Open Library in Aperture, which I did, and now I cannot get the two libraries separated. It will only open in one or the other application. It is really a mess.   Now I can only open the photos in one or the other at one time.  The previous workflow between the two apps was seamless. This one not at all.
I also see some old imports of libraries (iPhoto Library (1) , and iPhoto Library) in the Aperture app and there are duplicates of photos, library 1 has all the photos of the earlier library plus more current ones. I am wondering if the name iPhoto Library in an aperture project window is part of the confusion.
Anyway, this new workflow is really confusing if this is the way it is supposed to happen. If it isn't, I need a remedy. If it is, I  need some tricks and instructions about what the heck is going on.    I don't like this system at all. Apple really seems to have missed it with the upgrades to the two apps.
    Any help appreciated...

After my 2011 MacBook Pro 17 died, I had to purchase a new MacBook Pro 15 to replace it.  I performed a Time Machine installation from that 2011 machine, and only Distiller and Acrobat would launch (none of the rest of the creation apps).  So I ran the CS5.5 installer, uninstalled, then reinstalled, producing the same result. When I try to launch, nothing happens.  What next?
